Relief Pitchers

The Rockies would be winning games if only they had more guys like Buchholz. If the Rockies want to be back in the playoffs they need a more solid bullpen, and they need it now.

for anybody wondering, we won 17-5.

Some dream, huh?

Obviously, we’re much closer than an hour away…

Taveras

Any chance the Rox will use Willy (Mays Hays) Taveras as trade bait given our glut of CFs? There appear to be a couple of teams looking for lead-off/outfield help. I would think he would have the most trade value and would hurt the Rox the least.

by Fos on May 21, 2008 12:53 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think

Rox Girl talked about that a few days ago – the problem being that Spilly is not a true CF, and Pods is probably not the guy we want getting at bats every day. I agree though – there are probably too many CF’s at a high level in the system (Willy, Spilly, Sully, Pods) – It seems like Dealin Dan could turn one of them into a more useful piece.

Last week mentioned that there have been discussions with Toronto… Didn’t mention who we’d get in return though. Story is here

Nice

3 groundball outs to start the game. Good to see from the kid.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 1:11 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

erm

runner on third one out….It’d be nice to get more than one run…I’ll take it though

by moomacher on May 21, 2008 1:26 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

7 batters

and 6 ground ball outs on 21 pitches (15 strikes). I like this U-Ball.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 1:27 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

O lawd

U-Ball at the plate with runners on? This can’t possibly end well.

Bases Loaded

No Outs.

At least they got 1 run?

by Hizilla on May 21, 2008 1:34 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Bases loaded with no outs

and we managed to get one run home. To be fair, we did have one of the worst hitting pitchers up in a key situation and were lucky to only have one out recorded. Willy just didn’t get it done there, and the argument could be made the neither did Baker, despite bringing one in. I won’t complain, though.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 1:35 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Willy is the worst guy on the planet to have up

in those situations, which seem to happen fairly regularly. He has what, 6 RBIs this year?

by moomacher on May 21, 2008 1:38 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Interesting situation.

We have the potential for a very solid 1-8, with the caveat that the 1 is much better at starting the rally than he is at continuing one.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 1:43 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

First out today

that wasn’t a groundball. I believe the GB:FB is now 8:1. I’ll take that.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 1:42 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Besides his homerun last night,

Barmes has had some very ugly at bats these last two games.

by Rox Girl on May 21, 2008 1:44 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Another good scoring opportunity,

Come on Todd, let’s do some real damage.

by Rox Girl on May 21, 2008 1:47 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Haha

Iannetta really is kind of dreamy looking, isn’t he? As a guy, I’ve never taken the time to notice it before, but he has that look about him.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 1:53 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes

Iannetta is very dreamy-looking.

We're all going to die!

by Silverblood on May 21, 2008 3:14 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Bummer

That was an unfortunate ending to a once-promising half-inning. Todd gets called out on strikes, Spilly draws a walk, and then Iannetta jumps aboard the failboat.

Here’s to hopin’ U-Ball keeps ‘em runnin’ low.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 1:56 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ok, a few more innings of this offensive ineptitude

and I’ll change my stance from last night. Hard for the pitching to perfect all the time when the offense is so drastically underperforming.

Also, did they tell Ubaldo to stop trying to strike guys out and just pitch to contact in order keep his pitch counts down? He has 10-2 GO/FO ratio and zero Ks.

by moomacher on May 21, 2008 1:59 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

2 more GB outs

followed by a FB out to center. All in all, an 8-pitch inning. If you’re going to pitch to contact, I suppose this is the way to do it. Wasn’t Cook supposed to do this last night?

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 1:59 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I believe that's

4 straight K outs for Sanchez.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 2:01 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Out of curiosity

and I realize it’s a little early to be talking about it, but has there ever been a starting pitcher go hitless in a season? I’m also just making the mistake of assuming we’ll have U-Ball in the rotation and getting ABs every 5 days.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 2:04 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I actually don't know...

Certainly if there hasn’t so far, U-ball seems like a decent bet to challenge that mark.

by Rox Girl on May 21, 2008 2:10 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 2:13 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Another GB out

I do like this. Strikeouts are for boxscores. I’m much more interested in my pitcher (Yes, I have adopted U-Ball as mine) pitching efficiently and not wasting pitching trying to strike guys out. Ground balls are the way to go. Keep it up, kid.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 2:16 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The offense is frustrating, but at least it’s an enjoyable game to be part of. Yeah, I’m attempting a more optimistic view of the sports world for a while.

wasn't going to happen...

Just checking in on this one

(Work gets in the way sometimes.)

Good grief. 8 hits, 2 walks and an E in 5 innings and only 2 runs scored, 1 on an infield grounder and another on a sac fly. I think that means avg. with RISP is zero for the day.

Thank goodness Cy Young is pitching for us.

Couple more GB outs.

and 81 pitches. Hopefully asking him to remain solid for one more won’t be pushing our luck. Of course, if Baker gets into scoring position there might be a PH here, so it’d be a moot point.

Weird stat

During Willy T’s last AB, Gamecast showed his overall season average at .236, but his average against left-handed pitchers to be .087 … before he grounded out.

Which means his average against right-handed pitchers must be very good. Maybe he should sit vs. lefties, play v. righties—opposite to “conventional wisdom.”

There is a bright side to the '08 season.
Barry Bonds & Roger Clemens are out of baseball.

by maris61 on May 21, 2008 2:40 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Rockies' website stats

show the same thing … .314 against righties.

So “playing the percentages” with Willy T is not a good move, unless you play them the opposite way from normal.

by moomacher on May 21, 2008 2:47 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed

He’s tended to “lose it” quickly this year. Don’t tempt fate. Let him build on 7 shutout innings for next time & turn it over to someone else.

Well yeah

it makes so sense to bring Ian Stewart up for 2 starts a week. But if someone opens on the trade front, its nice to know that we have some mashers down there.

by moomacher on May 21, 2008 3:07 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sure...

So long as all of our starters pitch like Jimenez did today, every time they take the mound, we don’t need any more offense than this. I’ve got 100% faith that’s going to happen.

No you’re actually right, right now are needs come close to, but don’t quite match up with our surpluses. We need left handed power, but don’t have a spot to put it.

I’m very intrigued by the potential impact of a Hirsh return. I really like the guy and would love to see him help this team on it’s upswing.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 3:10 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

remember that Hirsh

was kind of getting it together towards the middle of the season last year? If he can come back and be solid it would be a)good for the rotation this year and b)give us a potential trading chip down the line.

by moomacher on May 21, 2008 3:13 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Given what Willy T did for us last season,

I don’t think he should be discounted. It’s as if the prizes come in chunks like a lottery:

Taveras 2007
Buchholz 2008
Hirsh 2009?

by Rox Girl on May 21, 2008 3:14 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm not at all discounting Willy

I’ve seen him play a lot, and I love him to death. I’d love to see him breakthrough and become a dominant lead-off man, though I realize it probably won’t happen.

It just looks like, right now, Bucky might have the most impact in the long run. I also say that knowing it’s a bit of a snap judgment and Hirsh is still very much a wildcard in the equation.

LOB stats

I guess it could be kind of confusing. LOB counts all players left on base, not just those stranded at the end of the inning. So if you come up with the bases loaded and nobody out, and you don’t get an RBI, it counts as 3 LOB. Do that three times, and you have nine LOB.

Oakland has 11 LOB and 9 runs on 11 hits and has drawn 4 walks, whereas the Rockies have 20 LOB and 2 runs on 8 hits with 4 drawn walks and a defensive error. Thought I’d point it out, despite the irrelevance.

Dear Brian Fuentes,

my disdain for you is only surpassed by the likes of Bonds and Clemens. I don’t care what you give this team for the rest of your life, I will never like you again. I tried to forgive you for annihilating me in Houston last year, then you did it this year, and you’ve been dead to me since. You would be one of the reasons for my self-imposed sports break, but here you are, wrecking my non-triumphant return. I hate you. Please give up pitching for the rest of your life.

Sincerely,

Me.

I dunno

If calling up Stewart to have him play multiple positions, get sporadic ABs, and never get into a rhythm would be such a great idea. Also, if you sit Hawpe, Spilly should be playing. Sitting Atkins and Helton every so often wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, but would it be worth possibly ruining the progress Stewart is making down in the Springs by getting consistent ABs and getting into a healthy rhythm? Can’t we just let the kid develop for a bit?

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 3:49 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Helton was called up when he was only 23-24...

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 3:53 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Miguel Cabrera too, for the Marlins

Was called up when they had Mike Lowell at third and a full outfield, played all over and was more of a reason for their turnaround from a sub .500 team to World Champions than Jack McKeon.

by Rox Girl on May 21, 2008 3:56 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Spilly did the same thing last year..

Playing all three outfield positions and getting quality at-bats. I think Stewart can get some quality at-bats between the three positions and might provide an offensive spark.

Sure, if we had a good manager, that would be a perfectly logical solution. But no, let’s keep trotting out the specialist who can’t get a righty out to save his life in the ninth to face a lineup full of righties. At least if he blows a couple more saves, Corpas will get another chance.

Actually the bullpen has been decent

their failures just tend to be more high profile. But damn our offense is terrible.

by moomacher on May 21, 2008 4:03 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yep

Exactly. Over the course of a season, every bullpen is going to have its bad games here and there. Fuentes blew that one, but it should never have been that close to begin with.

I agree

as I mentioned earlier, we can’t expect our pitching staff, to hold the other team to one run or scoreless, just to win.

3 runs…..at home…..should be a W for the Rockies

There are a bajillion ways to express ones anger and frustration without going the route of expletives. Personally, I just don’t know what those ways are, and like to avoid posting such frustrations.

Oh I agree

I’m certainly not blaming Q, he is what he is: a AAAA infielder/defensive replacement level player. And its hard to blame the team for having to play him due to the Tulo injury. But its fair to say that I was 100% convinced he wasn’t going to get a hit there, and its sad that I have to feel that way and be proven right.

Takeaways from today's game:

a. Uball has turned the corner, 16 ground ball outs, 2 walks, 7 innings pitched, 96 pitches, zero runs allowed

b. Fuentes is not the answer at closer, but he might be the answer for right now

c. Atkins is not hitting when the team needs him the most

I have finally

come to the conclusion that this is not a very good team this year. This offense is the worst I can remember for an extended period of time and especially for an offense w/ reasonable talent. I am hoping for a positive ‘09, and we will probably see some action at the trading deadline this year. It might be good though, and I think it will allow for improvement next year.

by smokinRox on May 21, 2008 4:34 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Glad so many people are getting along to stage five.

It makes seeing the needed fixes to the team so much easier. The really good news is that this time, those fixes should come pretty quickly if management doesn’t blow it given how solid our pitching is starting to look with Reynolds and U-ball lately.

by Rox Girl on May 21, 2008 4:48 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The trade I really dream of right now

is Hawpe for Jeff Clement. This makes sense for both teams. (well, we have to dump Torrealba somewhere too)

And can we fire Hurdle and staff the Wednesday after the All-star break?

Here's the key:

This team needs to forget about guys who put up big rotisserie numbers but are prone to slumps and aren’t consistent in the clutch and go with reliable performers, day in, day out.

Since he’s come up, the rap on Spillborghs, for example, has been “nice player, but not an everyday guy.” You know what, he’s exactly the sort of guy who should be in there every day. Doesn’t slump, doesn’t freeze with men in scoring position, hustles and plays hard. So what if he won’t put up huge stats—he’s a winner, plain and simple.

So’s Tulo.

So’s Atkins.

So, perhaps, is Barmes.

So, perhaps is Ianetta.

Otherwise? I’m not so sure.

One last thing. Remember Dante Bichette? Yeah, average player puffed up by pre-humidor Coors, I know. But when Bichette came to the plate in a clutch situation, there was never any doubt he would deliver. He was a winner.

More like that, and we get back on track.

PS: I want a long hard look at Ian Stewart this season. If he’s the real deal, the Monforts need to eat whatever salary they have to to move Helton before next season and have Stewart and Atkins at the corner. I don’t want to hear excuses—this isn’t a King Soopers that needs to worry all the time about profitablilty. It’s a sports franchise that will only succeed once it commits to success.

by BroJB on May 21, 2008 4:59 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Love the Bichette reference

that cheers me up. I feel like I was present for like 4 or 5 walkoff hits from Big D. Probably exaggerating his greatness through the passage of time, but still.

by Teekalong on May 21, 2008 5:28 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Dante

wasn’t a great player, but he was a great clutch player. That’s an odd intangible but, to me, it’s the most important one. Larry Walker was a more talented player and so, probably, was gallaraga. But Bichette was the guy you wanted at the plate when the chips were down.

Spilly has a lot of Bichette in him.

by BroJB on May 21, 2008 5:33 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sorry

But Atkins has been anything but clutch lately. Rox Girl’s early post today says it all too well, IMO.

by BroJB on May 21, 2008 5:47 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I was at today's game

and I think it may have been the most disheartening and deflating game I’ve ever seen at Coors Field. Can you imagine what kind of a toll such a loss takes on the Rockies’ mental outlook and morale?

To have Ubaldo pitch a brilliant 7 innings, Bucky as usual a perfect 8th and then to blow it because one guy doesn’t do his job is just incredibly demoralizing.

Yes, they should have scored more than two runs with the myriad baserunners they had, another monumentally disappointing failing of this team, but Fuentes gets the blame.
Buchholz threw 12 pitches in his one easy inning; is there some unwritten rule that you have to keep running the same closer out there until he implodes like Fuentes did last May-June and Corpas this April?

Make Bucky the closer before this team sinks out of view entirely. And one other thing:
why wait till it’s 2-2 on Quintanilla to have Podsednik try and steal? The reason you put him in is to steal a base…so let him steal already. Why on earth wait until it’s 2-2? That makes no sense at all.

by moose14 on May 21, 2008 5:32 PM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yep

You’re right about Podsednik. Quintinilla isn’t going to go deep and probably isn’t going to give you an extra base hit. You’ve gotta get Pods in scoring position early and give Q multiple shots to bring him in. It’s not enough to give a guy the green light, you’ve gotta give him the “must go”.

by BroJB on May 21, 2008 5:38 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree,

Playing conservative on the basepaths when you’re down to your last out isn’t the way to go. I think of Dave Roberts in the ALCS in 2004. You’re in a fix at that point anyway, might as well play for broke.

by Rox Girl on May 21, 2008 5:50 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Palpable disgust

was what I felt leaving Coors Field today. Jimenez was brilliant and economical, but abysmal clutch hitting and Fuentes combined to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
BTW, has Fuentes had a clean ninth inning this year in a save situation?

This was a tough loss in a season full of them.
