Relief Pitchers

The Rockies would be winning games if only they had more guys like Buchholz. If the Rockies want to be back in the playoffs they need a more solid bullpen, and they need it now.

I had a dream about this game last night

for anybody wondering, we won 17-5.

Some dream, huh?

Copied entire post

Obviously, we’re much closer than an hour away…

Taveras

Any chance the Rox will use Willy (Mays Hays) Taveras as trade bait given our glut of CFs? There appear to be a couple of teams looking for lead-off/outfield help. I would think he would have the most trade value and would hurt the Rox the least.

by Fos on May 21, 2008 12:53 PM MDT   0 recs

I think

Rox Girl talked about that a few days ago – the problem being that Spilly is not a true CF, and Pods is probably not the guy we want getting at bats every day. I agree though – there are probably too many CF’s at a high level in the system (Willy, Spilly, Sully, Pods) – It seems like Dealin Dan could turn one of them into a more useful piece.

The Denver Post

Last week mentioned that there have been discussions with Toronto… Didn’t mention who we’d get in return though. Story is here

by Rox R Champs on May 21, 2008 1:01 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Nice

3 groundball outs to start the game. Good to see from the kid.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 1:11 PM MDT   0 recs

erm

runner on third one out….It’d be nice to get more than one run…I’ll take it though

by moomacher on May 21, 2008 1:26 PM MDT   0 recs

At least

we got that runner home.

by Rox R Champs on May 21, 2008 1:31 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

7 batters

and 6 ground ball outs on 21 pitches (15 strikes). I like this U-Ball.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 1:27 PM MDT   0 recs

O lawd

U-Ball at the plate with runners on? This can’t possibly end well.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 1:33 PM MDT   0 recs

Bases Loaded

No Outs.

At least they got 1 run?

by Hizilla on May 21, 2008 1:34 PM MDT   0 recs

Bases loaded with no outs

and we managed to get one run home. To be fair, we did have one of the worst hitting pitchers up in a key situation and were lucky to only have one out recorded. Willy just didn’t get it done there, and the argument could be made the neither did Baker, despite bringing one in. I won’t complain, though.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 1:35 PM MDT   0 recs

Willy is the worst guy on the planet to have up

in those situations, which seem to happen fairly regularly. He has what, 6 RBIs this year?

by moomacher on May 21, 2008 1:38 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Interesting situation.

We have the potential for a very solid 1-8, with the caveat that the 1 is much better at starting the rally than he is at continuing one.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 1:43 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

First out today

that wasn’t a groundball. I believe the GB:FB is now 8:1. I’ll take that.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 1:42 PM MDT   0 recs

Besides his homerun last night,

Barmes has had some very ugly at bats these last two games.

by Rox Girl on May 21, 2008 1:44 PM MDT   0 recs

Another good scoring opportunity,

Come on Todd, let’s do some real damage.

by Rox Girl on May 21, 2008 1:47 PM MDT   0 recs

Errrr....

Was that really strike 3? Gameday has it a little wide.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 1:50 PM MDT   0 recs

It's funky zone, wide but not tall.

But he’s been consistent with it.

by Rox Girl on May 21, 2008 1:52 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

I thought it was, but the same pitch was called a ball last inning.

So forget I said that. It’s definitely a screwy strike zone.

by Rox Girl on May 21, 2008 1:55 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

It won't let me make a sad face

as the headline of my comment, so I’ll just say I made a sad face.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 1:56 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Haha

Iannetta really is kind of dreamy looking, isn’t he? As a guy, I’ve never taken the time to notice it before, but he has that look about him.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 1:53 PM MDT   0 recs

Yes

Iannetta is very dreamy-looking.

We're all going to die!

by Silverblood on May 21, 2008 3:14 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Bummer

That was an unfortunate ending to a once-promising half-inning. Todd gets called out on strikes, Spilly draws a walk, and then Iannetta jumps aboard the failboat.

Here’s to hopin’ U-Ball keeps ‘em runnin’ low.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 1:56 PM MDT   0 recs

Ok, a few more innings of this offensive ineptitude

and I’ll change my stance from last night. Hard for the pitching to perfect all the time when the offense is so drastically underperforming.

Also, did they tell Ubaldo to stop trying to strike guys out and just pitch to contact in order keep his pitch counts down? He has 10-2 GO/FO ratio and zero Ks.

by moomacher on May 21, 2008 1:59 PM MDT   0 recs

2 more GB outs

followed by a FB out to center. All in all, an 8-pitch inning. If you’re going to pitch to contact, I suppose this is the way to do it. Wasn’t Cook supposed to do this last night?

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 1:59 PM MDT   0 recs

I believe that's

4 straight K outs for Sanchez.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 2:01 PM MDT   0 recs

Out of curiosity

and I realize it’s a little early to be talking about it, but has there ever been a starting pitcher go hitless in a season? I’m also just making the mistake of assuming we’ll have U-Ball in the rotation and getting ABs every 5 days.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 2:04 PM MDT   0 recs

I actually don't know...

Certainly if there hasn’t so far, U-ball seems like a decent bet to challenge that mark.

by Rox Girl on May 21, 2008 2:10 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

So far this game

Sanchez is pitching like Ubaldo and Ubaldo is pitching like Cook….crazy

by moomacher on May 21, 2008 2:06 PM MDT   0 recs

by NewMexicanSteven on May 21, 2008 2:09 PM MDT   0 recs

Trying to get him to chase

a slider on 2-2 was cool, but 3-2 I don’t like it. Hindsight, I suppose.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 2:13 PM MDT   0 recs

Another GB out

I do like this. Strikeouts are for boxscores. I’m much more interested in my pitcher (Yes, I have adopted U-Ball as mine) pitching efficiently and not wasting pitching trying to strike guys out. Ground balls are the way to go. Keep it up, kid.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 2:16 PM MDT   0 recs

Would be great to get some clutch hitting

from Iannetta here. Even one run would be great.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 2:22 PM MDT   0 recs

Yeah

The offense is frustrating, but at least it’s an enjoyable game to be part of. Yeah, I’m attempting a more optimistic view of the sports world for a while.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 2:24 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

wasn't going to happen...

It seems only Spilly can come up with two out hits anymore.

by Rox Girl on May 21, 2008 2:24 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

How did Spilly reach on an infield hit?

Did he just leg it out? Or a bad hop take away an out opportunity?

by Rox R Champs on May 21, 2008 2:23 PM MDT   0 recs

by TuLoRocks2008 on May 21, 2008 2:32 PM MDT   0 recs

Just checking in on this one

(Work gets in the way sometimes.)

Good grief. 8 hits, 2 walks and an E in 5 innings and only 2 runs scored, 1 on an infield grounder and another on a sac fly. I think that means avg. with RISP is zero for the day.

Thank goodness Cy Young is pitching for us.

There is a bright side to the '08 season.

by maris61 on May 21, 2008 2:33 PM MDT   0 recs

Couple more GB outs.

and 81 pitches. Hopefully asking him to remain solid for one more won’t be pushing our luck. Of course, if Baker gets into scoring position there might be a PH here, so it’d be a moot point.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 2:35 PM MDT   0 recs

* sigh *

Or not. At least we’ll (presumably) see U-Ball back on the bump.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 2:36 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Weird stat

During Willy T’s last AB, Gamecast showed his overall season average at .236, but his average against left-handed pitchers to be .087 … before he grounded out.

Which means his average against right-handed pitchers must be very good. Maybe he should sit vs. lefties, play v. righties—opposite to “conventional wisdom.”

There is a bright side to the '08 season.
Barry Bonds & Roger Clemens are out of baseball.

by maris61 on May 21, 2008 2:40 PM MDT   0 recs

Rockies' website stats

show the same thing … .314 against righties.

So “playing the percentages” with Willy T is not a good move, unless you play them the opposite way from normal.

Wow

Who would have thought U-Ball’s first K of the game would come at the top of the 7th?

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 2:42 PM MDT   0 recs

Ubaldo

with his first K of the day….quite odd

by TuLoRocks2008 on May 21, 2008 2:47 PM MDT   0 recs

I think Ubado should be done here

97 pitches, 7 innings, no runs…great performance. Plus Bucky and Fuentes didn’t pitch yesterday.

by moomacher on May 21, 2008 2:47 PM MDT   0 recs

Agreed

He’s tended to “lose it” quickly this year. Don’t tempt fate. Let him build on 7 shutout innings for next time & turn it over to someone else.

Ubaldo

Ubaldo was awesome today. I really hope his last 2-3 appearances will be the norm in the future.

by holly96 on May 21, 2008 2:49 PM MDT   0 recs

Atkins' splits

I like seeing splits for each batter on Gamecast.
Atkins v. lefties: .519.
Thus, pitching change. Bochy’s not dumb.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 3:02 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Maybe a few more of these kinds of games

and O’Dowd might consider bringing up some offense from AAA. I hear we have some guys swing ing the sticks down there.

by moomacher on May 21, 2008 3:03 PM MDT   0 recs

I think

we can let the guys keep swinging the sticks down there.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 3:06 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Well yeah

it makes so sense to bring Ian Stewart up for 2 starts a week. But if someone opens on the trade front, its nice to know that we have some mashers down there.

by moomacher on May 21, 2008 3:07 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Sure...

So long as all of our starters pitch like Jimenez did today, every time they take the mound, we don’t need any more offense than this. I’ve got 100% faith that’s going to happen.

No you’re actually right, right now are needs come close to, but don’t quite match up with our surpluses. We need left handed power, but don’t have a spot to put it.

by Rox Girl on May 21, 2008 3:10 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

our needs

fifth grade grammar error, sorry. I’ve been making a lot of those this afternoon.

It's no problem.

Great inning

there by Bucky. Who would have thought he would have turned into the real prize of that deal? Kind of like Fuentes in the Cirillo trade.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 3:08 PM MDT   0 recs

Oh yeah

I’m very intrigued by the potential impact of a Hirsh return. I really like the guy and would love to see him help this team on it’s upswing.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 21, 2008 3:10 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

remember that Hirsh

was kind of getting it together towards the middle of the season last year? If he can come back and be solid it would be a)good for the rotation this year and b)give us a potential trading chip down the line.
