Game #48: Perez vs. Reynolds

New York Mets at Colorado Rockies, May 23, 2008 7:05 PM MDT

I always look forward to the series against the Mets, mostly because they're my "hometown" team. Anyway, this is the first of two series against the Mets at Coors Field before the two teams shift over to Shea Stadium in July. Greg Reynolds makes his third start, and I want it to be a good one.

Go Rockies!

Heavy right handed lineup...

Since left handers have a pretty ugly line to begin with against Perez this year, and we can only guess what that would do with Hawpe.

Cool

Still new to the area, so I had to look up what CW is (channel 11, I guess). Will be nice to see a couple of games on an actual TV screen the next two days.

I guess Church is out with dizziness. It’s nice that teams are handicapping themselves like that.

Absolute ceiling would be somebody like Halladay

What we’ve seen so far tonight is what that would look like. Let’s see how he does the second time through the lineup, and the second time through the league when hitters know what to expect before getting too giddy, though.

Sticky fly paper...

If they’re not going to institute replay then change the stadiums so that a HR is obviously a HR. Put up some sticky fly paper above the yellow. Or some kind of chalk line that marks the ball.

I have no idea why Hurdle sac bunts with the pitcher

when Taveras is our lead-off guy. He’s just not a run producer, at all. Better off letting the pitcher swing away unless it’s U-ball.

by Rox Girl on May 23, 2008 8:29 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Rockies lead the league in Sac Bunts...

Seems like maybe they’re sacrificing too many outs to get runners in scoring position. WillyT doesn’t help however, he should be hitting in the 8 hole.

There's only one Rocktober!!

by Charlie77 on May 23, 2008 8:31 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

True, but it it is set up this way,

The only runners on situation Willy’s decent at is with a runner at first, he’s got a .350 batting average over his career and is 5 for fifteen in that situation this year. Any other runners on situation and he’s gone 5 for 29 (.172) this season. By bunting the lead runner over, Hurdle’s completely eliminating a strength of his, which is poking the ball through the hole on the right side.

next time...

He’s going to bring him home next time. It would have been nice to get Reynolds in line for his first W but getting him off the hook for the L will have to do.

Yeah

Getting him off the hook for the L was sweet, but getting a reliever another win would be…sweeter? Atkins striking out is always a heartbreaker, too. I LOVE watching him hit a baseball.

I bet you lead the internet in posts about Atkins’ lack of range. I don’t think his range to his left or right has ever been very good, has it?

by Charlie77 on May 23, 2008 9:27 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

good, with soft hands, but the range issues are there

Barmes won’t make mistakes, but he won’t get to the plays Tulo gets to. David’s correct in this on both players.

by Rox Girl on May 23, 2008 9:30 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I didn't have a particular disagreement

I just notice him point out Atkins’ lack of range more than anybody else and it makes me laugh. The internet is a tough place for my sense of humor, heh.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 23, 2008 9:34 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Then why does Barmes..

Have only 3 less out of zone plays then Tulo in 50 less innings?

There's only one Rocktober!!

by Charlie77 on May 23, 2008 9:44 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

OOZ- take with grain of salt

Out of zone stats can come from several flukey places, as well as several legit ones. Getting fly balls in shallow center, running down flies in foul territory… all great plays, but also out of ordinary ones.

RZR is much better because it helps measure the volume of balls hit to short that are converted to outs. Tulo’s was a staggering .971 before injury, where Barmes was a below average .800, and i think that shows in the amount of balls that get through the third base hole, hurting both Atkins and Barmes.

Bottom line, Clint doesn’t do balls to his right very well, Tulo might be at his best there.

by David OhNo on May 23, 2008 10:01 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Barmes RZR has climbed to .836 this year..

and like I mentioned before, he had a good 2006 when his RZR was .854 which was 4th best in the NL. Only one SS had more OOZ plays and a higher RZR in 2006 than Barmes

If you haven't seen the first 3,

The Mummy, or National Treasure. Indiana Jones really created the formula for those movies, and because they’re big-time money-makers, they keep going back to it and making them more and more ridiculous. Some of the “stunts” in this movie were completely insane. I tried to laugh them off with the justification that it’s just an Indiana Jones flick, so what should I expect, but some of that crap was just like, “COME ON!” I’m glad I saw it, though.

watch the Rockies on TV, aside from borrowing Russ’ MLB.TV a few days ago. I did not know Greg Reynolds wore high socks. Love for the youngster = increasing. (I will overlook the fact that he gave up a homer to FERNANDO TATIS).

We're all going to die!

by Silverblood on May 23, 2008 11:30 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Hey now

Tatis is the same guy who hit 2 Grand Slams in the same inning once. Sure, it was like 10 years ago, but you know.

Yeah G-Rey is my favorite new pitcher..

He’s got a great look and I love how he attacks the strike zone and 4 k’s in 2 innings today was sweet.

There's only one Rocktober!!

by Charlie77 on May 23, 2008 11:32 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's looked very solid out there

The back-to-back HRs were a blip, but overall, he looks much more poised than Morales. I look forward to seeing what he can do, and hopefully he shuts up everyone who wishes we took Lincecum over him…. well, okay, that includes me, but I am fully up for giving young Gregory a chance.

We're all going to die!

You could

have had Scherzer too…. or Joba Chamberlain.

Eh, big deal

A psychopath with crazy eyes or a tubby salsa-dancing Nebraskaite? ;)

We have Greg, and I for one am perfectly happy that that is the case. No use playing what-if.

We're all going to die!

by Silverblood on May 23, 2008 11:43 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I take umbrage

at your characterization of Mad Max as “a psychopath with crazy eyes”. There’s no evidence that he’s ACTUALLY a psychopath.

Max Scherzer is all out of bubblegum.

Hell

You yourself have said before that he’s insane, so I’m trusting your judgment.

We're all going to die!

by Silverblood on May 23, 2008 11:47 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah..... INSANE-GOOD.

But he’s not really a psychopath. He’s just Mad Max.

Whatever

I’m still perfectly fine with Reynolds. Kid is just up to the big leagues and he’s definitely not in over his head.

as I discovered tonight, he wears high socks. You get immediate points in Silverblood’s book for rocking the socks.

Maybe I should clarify

Rocking the high socks when they are black is GOOD. Rocking the high socks when they are red, and you are a straw-brained loudmouth, is BAD.

to have been a catalyst in the conversation because of my attitude towards the Star Wars movies, lol. Such is life.

by Silverblood on May 24, 2008 12:17 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nah.

See, you guys are like the Orckies in The Hobbit. (Even though they were called “Goblins” then.) We had a discussion figuring out who was who on our team from Fellowship of the Ring, (Byrnes was Boromir—used to be good, sucks now) and Steinbrenner was definitely Sauron, trying desperately for his Ring of Power.

Although, we DID compare you guys to the Ringwraiths—9 former kings of men, who were given false rings (during the first home series of the year…. ahem) that turned you from men into mere wraiths….

The after-game conversation has been fantastic, but I have to go to bed, since I have to get up early tomorrow morning (anathema, it being a Saturday and me hating to get up early in general) to go to Squeaky’s graduation. Let’s save a little epic nerdiness for tomorrow (along with another win against the Metros, this one taking the regular 9…)

The KOTOR games?

Made by Bioware, the same company that made Jade Empire and Mass Effect. All of them are phenomenal games and highly recommended, especially Mass Effect. It took the KOTOR formula with the good/evil system and really turned it into a thing of beauty.

Never finished it though. My dark side character in KOTOR was Darth Jeter.

Mass Effect

was easily my personal Game of the Year last year, and I’m a HUGE Halo fanboy, sao that tells you of my love for it. I’ve beaten it several times and will beat it many more in my life. The game is just phenomenally balanced with a great storyline and deep characters. The side missions really bring the game to life.

by SlamDunkTheFunk on May 24, 2008 12:18 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really liked what I saw of Mass Effect

I’ve been meaning to buy it. But, my game of the year was Call of Duty 4, absolutely amazing.

I meant to give a nod to COD4 as well

but the multiplayer left me wanting more. I LOVED the campaign though. My favorite multiplayer game of the year was actually Team Fortress 2, heh. Go figure, eh? Mass Effect is also coming out on PC with a couple of new improvements and additions to the game, so if your rig can handle it, I’d suggest getting it for that. The PC version really fixes the very few flaws of the 360 copy.

...and now everybody realizes what a huge nerd I really am.

I know that’s borderline sacrelige for an Xbox owner, and I do enjoy it, but would much rather play NCAA Football or COD4 or GTA.
