Game #48: Perez vs. Reynolds
New York Mets at Colorado Rockies, May 23, 2008 7:05 PM MDT
I always look forward to the series against the Mets, mostly because they're my "hometown" team. Anyway, this is the first of two series against the Mets at Coors Field before the two teams shift over to Shea Stadium in July. Greg Reynolds makes his third start, and I want it to be a good one.
Go Rockies!

Heavy right handed lineup...
Since left handers have a pretty ugly line to begin with against Perez this year, and we can only guess what that would do with Hawpe.

Curve was flat against Minny
but it’s an absolute hammer tonight. The sinker’s humming too.
Yeah it is...
He’s just looking really sharp out there tonight and his confidence seems to be growing every inning.
Reynolds
Looking good tonight!
To those of you would know, how does he project? Could he really be this good?

Absolute ceiling would be somebody like Halladay
What we’ve seen so far tonight is what that would look like. Let’s see how he does the second time through the lineup, and the second time through the league when hitters know what to expect before getting too giddy, though.
Perez

That was my original comment
but then I thought about missing it wide, and thought about who was pitching, and it seemed logical. But I do agree, it is HUGE.

I think any of our other second basemen get Reyes there. That’s not an easy play, but Baker was a little slow getting there and flipping the ball.

Oh, I originally misunderstood you.

would be nice. How many times do teams have to get jobbed out of runs because of stubbornness?

Sticky fly paper...
If they’re not going to institute replay then change the stadiums so that a HR is obviously a HR. Put up some sticky fly paper above the yellow. Or some kind of chalk line that marks the ball.
There's only one Rocktober!!
I have no idea why Hurdle sac bunts with the pitcher
when Taveras is our lead-off guy. He’s just not a run producer, at all. Better off letting the pitcher swing away unless it’s U-ball.
Rockies lead the league in Sac Bunts...
Seems like maybe they’re sacrificing too many outs to get runners in scoring position. WillyT doesn’t help however, he should be hitting in the 8 hole.
There's only one Rocktober!!
True, but it it is set up this way,
The only runners on situation Willy’s decent at is with a runner at first, he’s got a .350 batting average over his career and is 5 for fifteen in that situation this year. Any other runners on situation and he’s gone 5 for 29 (.172) this season. By bunting the lead runner over, Hurdle’s completely eliminating a strength of his, which is poking the ball through the hole on the right side.
Not gonna disagree
But who the heck (on this team) would lead off?

good, with soft hands, but the range issues are there
Barmes won’t make mistakes, but he won’t get to the plays Tulo gets to. David’s correct in this on both players.

I was mainly talking about Barmes
but Atkins played a role in that inning as well.
Then why does Barmes..
Have only 3 less out of zone plays then Tulo in 50 less innings?
There's only one Rocktober!!
OOZ- take with grain of salt
Out of zone stats can come from several flukey places, as well as several legit ones. Getting fly balls in shallow center, running down flies in foul territory… all great plays, but also out of ordinary ones.
RZR is much better because it helps measure the volume of balls hit to short that are converted to outs. Tulo’s was a staggering .971 before injury, where Barmes was a below average .800, and i think that shows in the amount of balls that get through the third base hole, hurting both Atkins and Barmes.
Bottom line, Clint doesn’t do balls to his right very well, Tulo might be at his best there.
Barmes RZR has climbed to .836 this year..
and like I mentioned before, he had a good 2006 when his RZR was .854 which was 4th best in the NL. Only one SS had more OOZ plays and a higher RZR in 2006 than Barmes

If you haven't seen the first 3,
The Mummy, or National Treasure. Indiana Jones really created the formula for those movies, and because they’re big-time money-makers, they keep going back to it and making them more and more ridiculous. Some of the “stunts” in this movie were completely insane. I tried to laugh them off with the justification that it’s just an Indiana Jones flick, so what should I expect, but some of that crap was just like, “COME ON!” I’m glad I saw it, though.

we both decided to consider ourselves “catalysts” even. Lame.

Well
we did spring this whole thing into action. We can both take credit, right?

Pretty much.
Plus, it started out with a Newt Gingrich joke. Following politics is nerdy too, right?

I hate politics.
No joke. I think life is a game, so I live it like one. Politics are the bugs in the alpha versions of the game. No thank you.

I hate politics too, sorta,
because I hate that there are people who disagree with me. Pisses me off.

Yeah.
There’s an obligatory number of Star Wars, Star Trek, LOTR, Dr. Who, Harry Potter, H.P. Lovecraft, etc. references to be found buried in every Dbacks GameDay Thread.

find myself making a lot of “I find your lack of ___ ......disturbing” jokes all the time.

I imagine you get them all in when you play us
with the oh-so-clever “Orckies” and the obligatory Sauron references.

by Silverblood on May 24, 2008 12:17 AM MDT up reply actions
Nah.
See, you guys are like the Orckies in The Hobbit. (Even though they were called “Goblins” then.) We had a discussion figuring out who was who on our team from Fellowship of the Ring, (Byrnes was Boromir—used to be good, sucks now) and Steinbrenner was definitely Sauron, trying desperately for his Ring of Power.
Although, we DID compare you guys to the Ringwraiths—9 former kings of men, who were given false rings (during the first home series of the year…. ahem) that turned you from men into mere wraiths….

a little clever though, right?

Yes

Okay
The after-game conversation has been fantastic, but I have to go to bed, since I have to get up early tomorrow morning (anathema, it being a Saturday and me hating to get up early in general) to go to Squeaky’s graduation. Let’s save a little epic nerdiness for tomorrow (along with another win against the Metros, this one taking the regular 9…)

Has anyone played the Knights of the Old Republic video games? They’re very good.

The KOTOR games?
Made by Bioware, the same company that made Jade Empire and Mass Effect. All of them are phenomenal games and highly recommended, especially Mass Effect. It took the KOTOR formula with the good/evil system and really turned it into a thing of beauty.

Rented Mass Effect
Never finished it though. My dark side character in KOTOR was Darth Jeter.

Mass Effect
was easily my personal Game of the Year last year, and I’m a HUGE Halo fanboy, sao that tells you of my love for it. I’ve beaten it several times and will beat it many more in my life. The game is just phenomenally balanced with a great storyline and deep characters. The side missions really bring the game to life.

Really liked what I saw of Mass Effect
I’ve been meaning to buy it. But, my game of the year was Call of Duty 4, absolutely amazing.
Every day is a Holliday!
I meant to give a nod to COD4 as well
but the multiplayer left me wanting more. I LOVED the campaign though. My favorite multiplayer game of the year was actually Team Fortress 2, heh. Go figure, eh? Mass Effect is also coming out on PC with a couple of new improvements and additions to the game, so if your rig can handle it, I’d suggest getting it for that. The PC version really fixes the very few flaws of the 360 copy.
...and now everybody realizes what a huge nerd I really am.

We have knife fights in multiplayer. Absolutely hilarious.

All of my friends love COD4 multi, too
but I dunno. Like I said, I’m a HUGE Halo fanboy, and no multiplayer game will ever get me like Halo 2 did.

I've never been a big fan of Halo
I know that’s borderline sacrelige for an Xbox owner, and I do enjoy it, but would much rather play NCAA Football or COD4 or GTA.
Every day is a Holliday!
I'm a Master Chief fanboy to the core
but NCAA Football games are the only sports games I love anymore. GTA is all right, I guess. It’s kind of fun at times.

I truly hate to do this, because I love gaming/sports/movies talk, but I’m burning through the Friday Night Lights Seasons and am losing focus, so I’m gonna roll bounce for the night, and hopefully we can pick it up tomorrow. Thanks for the great chat, wish we could do it more sometime.

S'okay.
I guess Silverblood is the closest you folks come to having an ambassador there, but we’re pretty much down with the open borders anyways, so
