Game #50: Maine vs. Cook

New York Mets at Colorado Rockies, May 25, 2008 1:05 PM MDT

John Maine's a funny guy. Aaron Cook starts a day early. Oh, and Matt Holliday went on the DL earlier today (see FanShot below this entry).

Nice lineup...

And no Atkins again. Swell….

This will either be a horribly embarrassing game or we’ll do something decent. There you have it…and I’ll still be tracking it.

Rockies are habit forming and may become addictive.

Speaking of the Sky Sox

there are 2 names on their roster I don’t recognize. For the minor league experts here, any idea/help?
Radames Nazario SS R R 6’ 0” 166 20 06-14-1987 Active
Leonardo Reyes OF R R 6’ 0” 1 65 19 08-02-1988 Active

I notice their ages are really, really young for AAA.

Radames

Nazario was a 2005 22nd round draft pick by the Rockies. Split time between Asheville and Tri-City last year. Filling in until the Sky Sox bring in someone else. Same goes for Reyes, who played for Casper last season.

Sure, some of the injury fill ins aren’t first choice guys, but I wouldn’t fault the two recent call-ups for anything other than having plenty of ability to be successful major leaguers.

If anything, we have very good infield defense to support Aaron Cook today.

by Silverblood on May 25, 2008 2:17 PM MDT up reply actions

It's a testament to our system

We’ve been able to find replacements of quality that may not all be future big league regulars, but certainly big league quality. To lose a Holliday, a Hawpe and an Atkins (temporarily) and replace them with guys like Smith, Spillborghs and Stewart in your lineup suggests that you have tremendous organizational depth.

O’Dowd takes plenty of heat for not working outside the financial restrictions placed on him, but what he gets little respect for is building a well oiled machine from Low A to the majors.

I predict that our AAA line-up is going to go on a major winning streak and put our major league DL-ers to shame. I don’t really see how it could possibly go any other way. These guys are loose and not burdened by last year’s achievements, and they’re playing behind major league pitchers.

Cookie

isn’t specialized for that role?

I’m confused.

YAAY Cookie!

I am so glad that JDLR did not start that game.

We're all going to die!

I'm happy that Cook got the start

Certainly happy with the result of it, but JDLR pitches tomorrow against a hot Phillies team, so I’m not sure if throwing a banana away for every dollar you take from the till keeps the banana stand afloat in this case.

The Mets had their team set up to face two lefthanders this weekend, so switching Cook and JDLR at the last minute was a very solid counter-move for that, but the Phillies hit LHP’s well, too. We’ll have to come up with more offense tomorrow.

It did occur to me

that the price we have to pay for having Cook dominate the Mets is having to watch JDLR pitch against the Phillies… at their joke of a park… after they scored 15 runs today.

Sheeeeooouch.

We're all going to die!

Yea!

Got home in time to catch the 8th and 9th. Nice play by Herrera there to finish it off. At least we won this series. Makes me feel a little better. Nice attendance this week-end as well. Good to see so many folks at the yard.

A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings. ~ Earl Wilson

I hope

that they were there to see our lovable poltroons, not the Mets, but I suspect the opponent had something to do with it. Good way to close out a long homestand. Winning two of three series is a start. Now let’s do something on the road.

(Yes, hope springs eternal).

Series... Win?

What on earth is that?

We actually got one against the Twins

and aside from Fuentes’ fartery in Game 3, were close to getting one against the Giants as well.

Good God

Are the Padres and Reds still playing?

Insert clever and witty remark slash pun here!

by ES46NE10 on May 25, 2008 6:54 PM MDT reply actions

Yep

Bottom of the sixteenth. The Reds had to bring in Harang, who was scheduled to start on Wednesday, and he’s already thrown 3.2 innings with 7 K’s and 59 pitches. The Pads do seem to get these long games, huh…? Eh, they’re still 6 innings short.

Still

Playing two 16+ inning games in six weeks can’t be good for the bullpen.

Old friend Josh Fogg...

came into the game in bottom of 11th with a two-run lead and allowed Padres to tie it up.
Adrian Gonzalez won it with 3-run homer in 18th.

Really bizarre game…seven (7) homers at Petco, all except Gonzalez’ in first nine innings.

Good game today

If we are going to suck, we might as well suck with the future. Also I’m excited to see Ian Stewart hit five home runs at CBP starting tomorrow. And strike out 10 times.
