Game #50: Maine vs. Cook

New York Mets @ Colorado Rockies

John Maine's a funny guy. Aaron Cook starts a day early. Oh, and Matt Holliday went on the DL earlier today (see FanShot below this entry).

Nice lineup...

And no Atkins again. Swell….

This will either be a horribly embarrassing game or we’ll do something decent. There you have it…and I’ll still be tracking it.

Rockies are habit forming and may become addictive.

Wow

You know, if all this – the terrible record, all the injuries – is the trade-off for what happened last year… I’d still make that trade all over again. Don’t know about you all.

Speaking of the Sky Sox

there are 2 names on their roster I don’t recognize. For the minor league experts here, any idea/help?
Radames Nazario SS R R 6’ 0” 166 20 06-14-1987 Active
Leonardo Reyes OF R R 6’ 0” 1 65 19 08-02-1988 Active

I notice their ages are really, really young for AAA.

Colorado Rockies: Playing meaningless games in June, continuing a long tradition.

by Redhawk on May 25, 2008 12:50 PM MDT   0 recs

Radames

Nazario was a 2005 22nd round draft pick by the Rockies. Split time between Asheville and Tri-City last year. Filling in until the Sky Sox bring in someone else. Same goes for Reyes, who played for Casper last season.

a quick check....

just based on birth years….The average birth year of the Rockies active roster is 80, whereas the Sky Sox is 79.6. So, at least by that measure, the Rox are younger.

Triple A scrubs?

That’s one helluva AAA team then.

Sure, some of the injury fill ins aren’t first choice guys, but I wouldn’t fault the two recent call-ups for anything other than having plenty of ability to be successful major leaguers.

If anything, we have very good infield defense to support Aaron Cook today.

I know...

I’m fine with them being up while we’re falling to pieces with injuries, but…let’s just say that I’m a little suspicious with the whole “Stewart should replace Atkins” campaign recently.

I’m not part of that at all. I think Stew is a great looking youngster, but I love Atkins. Besides, Stew has really taken to striking out a lot in the bigs so far. I figure that’ll be fixed with some more development, but for now, =(

Ground out

The Yorvit Specialty. Don’t get me wrong, Iannetta hasn’t been much better. But I would REALLY like to see him get about four starts in a row and see if he can find a rhythm. Playing him once every week or so is not going to help. I think he’s been critically mismanaged the past couple years…

by Silverblood on May 25, 2008 2:17 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

It's a testament to our system

We’ve been able to find replacements of quality that may not all be future big league regulars, but certainly big league quality. To lose a Holliday, a Hawpe and an Atkins (temporarily) and replace them with guys like Smith, Spillborghs and Stewart in your lineup suggests that you have tremendous organizational depth.

O’Dowd takes plenty of heat for not working outside the financial restrictions placed on him, but what he gets little respect for is building a well oiled machine from Low A to the majors.
