Game #54: Francis vs Marquis
Colorado Rockies at Chicago Cubs, May 29, 2008 6:05 PM MDT
So the Cubs actually swept the D-backs at Wrigley earlier this season. The D-backs have seemed less intimidated by Francis than they are by the prospects of getting a hangnail someday down the line. If baseball were subject to the rules of algebra, I'm not exactly liking the transitive implications of this. I guess we're lucky it's not. Maybe...

How far behind are we ?
How many beers should I have? I’m down to only a 2 Avalanches, and 2 Fat tires…..I don’t think I have enough.

I liked that second pitch...
Franchise 26 mentioned the other day that he needs to pound inside more, that’s exactly what he was talking about.
of course go back to the well too often...
At least it’s a different look than what he’s been showing.
Francis does look a little different,

Back in little league
we had a word for pitchers like Francis: “meat.” I suspect most MLB hitters feel the same these days.
Spilly!
Why do our two best hitters lately have to be back-up corner outfielders that are going to sit again when Holliday/Hawpe return?
FRIDAY NIGHT, MODESTO GOES AGAINST....
S.F. Giants starting pitcher, Kevin Correia! Asheville went against a guy named Smoltz, tonight.
Q, terrible...
Yorvit too, actually, but the E-6 sort of saved him. A runner at third with one out and we strand him. That’s way too typical of this team this year.

Why the f***
is Quintanilla starting over Herrera? We know what Quintanilla is, a .250 hitter with no power. At least Herrera might be better.
That was an atrocious display of batting.

Also....
Is it wrong to hope Torrealba goes down with a season ending injury? Nothing that will cripple him for life or anything, but just something that will bother him enough to not ever play again.
i'd rather see

Francis giving up a lot of hard contact tonight.
If he is better, it’s only incrementally. The team still seems to have its head in the sand on his issues, though.
I wonder if Atkins' neck is still bothering him...
His timing’s been off since he’s been back, and he just doesn’t look that comfortable with his swing right now.

Man, I'm bummed
Been watching my Astros get Pujols-ed again (3-2), but at least when I checked XM the Rockies were up 4-3 on 2 RBI’s by Willy T.
Then the bullpen took over. Herges is getting dangerously close to being added to the “Not What He Was in ‘07” list, which is getting to be a pretty long list.

The happier Ron Santo gets
the more I hate the Dubs. (I’m listening on XM.)
He actually thinks they’re going to win it all
He probably still thinks he’s going to be in the HOF, too.
Neither will hapen, though I’d rather see Santo make the

WHOSE JOB IS IT TO PREPARE STEWART TO PLAY
2B in the big leadgues….I believe he played 0 innings there in AAA..AA..A..R..HS..and probably not much more in Spring Training…is that position so easy that you can never play it; be given ABSOLUTELY NO PREPARATION and then play it in the Big Leagues and be expected to catch over the head popups…Smith should have called him off anyway. SOMEBODY is responsible for NOT planning ahead. Anybody know who is responsible?

by The Lodo Magic Man on May 29, 2008 9:16 PM MDT up reply actions
Disagree
It is NOT Clint Hurdle’s job to teach Major League baseball players how to field their position. If you are going to make a prospect learn a new position, it is the minor league IF coaching staff that is responsible for getting those prospects playing time at that new position.

Yeah our minor league guys are so thick
they play Stewart at the position he is clearly blocked out, don’t get him reps at either second or outfield….
Not that I disagree with your point..,
Quite the opposite, the organization is having necessity force it into something it should have tried a while ago, but Stewart for all that inexperince hasn’t been as bad as I was afraid he was going to be.
Garrett Atkins
had played zero games at 2B when he was moved there in the game that Tulo got hurt. He looked like a polished gold glove 2B. could it be that Stewie isn’t a very good fielder, regardless of where he’s playing?
Aut Vincam Aut Periam
by PioneerSkies on May 29, 2008 9:20 PM MDT up reply actions
yeah maybe it’s just an indication that Atkins is a better athlete than many people think he is.
Aut Vincam Aut Periam
by PioneerSkies on May 29, 2008 9:24 PM MDT up reply actions
I'll give you that.
I’m not going to deny that he’s not an athlete, and a fine all around ballplayer, but neither of these guys are true second basemen defensively. What puts us out ahead is the fact that our guy at that position went three for five with two extra base hits. Defense can take a bit of a hit when you get offense like that.
Stewie was
a homer away from the cycle. i guess he’s trying to keep up with Joe Koshansky…

Very Possibly.
Atkins has turned heads with his glove. He’s not gonna take any GG’s home this year, but he has impressed me with his range this season.

I'd like to see some numbers back this up
So far this season he’s the second worst third baseman in the NL defensively according to most of the tables that I’ve seen. Again though, I don’t want to say that he’s not athletic or an overall positive to the team with that bat of his, he’s just not a very good defensive third baseman according to neutral observations.
I'VE HAD ENOUGH
NO MORE TORREALBA. ENOUGH. IANNETTA AND BELLORIN.
Honestly, Bellorin could not possibly be as worthless as Yorvit Torrealba. He can’t hit, he can’t throw runners out, and as just evidenced, he can’t even handle a ball to get a runner out when he has a good 7 feet to get him with.
Bring up ANY AAA catcher (except Cota :v ) and have him back up Iannetta. There is no way that they could be any more ineffective than Torrealba is.
He hit ONE clutch home run in the 2007 NLCS. That does NOT make him a good hitter, or even a clutch hitter! He’s absolutely lousy! He’s a dead out!
Torrealba has a runner on 2nd and nobody out, all he needs to do is put down a bunt or hit a ball sharply to the left side. Instead, he taps one nearly directly to second base, not only not moving the runner over, but completely wasting an out.
I don’t care HOW good of a game he calls, take a look at the pitching this season. His catcher’s ERA (fake, I know) can’t be much better than Morales’ was when he got SENT DOWN.
Essentially we have a catcher who can’t hit, can’t throw runners out, can’t field his position well, and apparently isn’t as great as we thought at calling a game.
Free Chris Iannetta.
