lineup today. I like that Iannetta is playing, thank god. No doubt it is much too much to hope he gets a few starts in a row. He moves way down in the batting order, which is also good. HurdleLogic, however, cannot help himself Baker gets the start over Smith, when he could have easily played second or something if Hurdle REALLY wanted to get him in the lineup. Therefore removing a hot bat from a lineup struggling very badly. He moves Spilly to third, which seems odd, because Atkins has been struggling since he got back and I would much rather have Spilly in the cleanup spot these days.

Then again, this is the Cubs. I don’t have high hopes for the game. I just don’t. A new wave of apathy has come over from the FO after O’Dowd’s ridiculous remarks about “oh, they’ll go on a run and be FINE” without really digging at ANYONE for playing/managing horribly, and the Rockies can lose another, because why not? I mean, they’ll just go on a run when they go on a run and there you have it.

Urk….

Go Rockies!!!!

I think the Q/Herrara combo

is the best defensively, and Hurdle has been running them out there behind Cook, which is a good thing.

WHY WHY WHY

Is Smith not starting? That guy is clearly one of the best hitters we have at this point.

he's a lefty

Lilly is a lefty, ergo, he must sit

I now suggest that each team does not get another hit until the fifth inning is over. And swing at the first pitch. Though with the Rockies, they’ll probably end up getting hits like crazy.

Let's spin it

This is a good and appropriate thing. It’s time to think about next year, and where better to realize this than Wrigley Field. We’ve got talent. We’ve had some bad breaks (injuries). There’s no way we’re REALLY this bad. Right? So, it’s time to remember last Fall on the bad days, watch the new kids on the good days (Smith and Herrera have both surprised me in a good way) and accept some suffering. That is of course unless we come back to win this. If THAT happens, it’s the turn around I’ve been expecting along and it’s a fast march to October! :)

didn’t go our way today, we had some tough breaks, but that’s the game… you have to put it behind you and come out ready to play tomorrow. I won’t deny it’s been hard right now, but I think that’s just something you have to accept, and keep your heads up and realize it’s a long season.”

Every time you think you've seen every way to lose

They show you a new one. It felt like a gimme, possibly a season-changer (yeah, yeah). 9-1, Cook pitching. Gone. I need to take a break from this team. I was almost not feeling it as much any more, but that one HURT.

Every loss gets us closer

to #1 draft pick.

Plus trading Holliday will bring another potential #1.

Nothing like a terrible year to bring some talent. (See 2008 Rays)

Fire Hurdle...

I know its never going to happen, but this game should have been won. And guess what? Next year is going to be WORSE in 2009 if he stays! The players are somewhat to blame but he ruins EVERYTHING with his decisions! That is what leads some or all players giving up. And Atkins is either playing hurt and/or doesn’t have his timing back, either way he shouldn’t be playing,,,and he is my favorite player so this is not a shot at him. I know we had a great 07 and I didn’t expect a decline worse than of years past. And of all the years of watching the rockies 93-08 this season is the worst, whether or not it is statistically. If he managed ANY other team he would be gone.

If this roadtrip unfolds like it might

and remember we still have to go to Dodger stadium, that it wouldn’t surprise me to see big changes when the team gets back to Denver next week.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/jon_heyman/05/30/heyman.rockies/

This SI article speculates that O’Dowd will be hesitant to make and big moves because the team might still be in it…Well that’s probably not even a million to one shot by the end of the weekend.

by moomacher on May 30, 2008 3:28 PM MDT up reply actions

That article

mentions trading Willy T. That’s a new one to me.

The with the team being so bad right now

is that the Willy Ts and Yorvits of the world aren’t exactly helping their trade values out.

Hurdle

I imagine this has been hashed out here before, but I haven’t seen it:

What happens at the all-star game if one of the mangers (i.e. Hurdle) is fired beforehand? Does Clint come back in a generic NL uni? Does the new Rockies manager take over?

I honestly believe the embarrassment of this happening is the one thing that may save Hurdle’s job between now and July.

by BroJB on May 30, 2008 3:48 PM MDT up reply actions

New Rockies manager

would get the all-star game. This has happened before when Billy Martin was fired in 1978 I believe.

I got one!

I actually had tickets to the game today, but had to cancel due to work and $4 gas (Chicago is 4 hours away). Had I gone, I’m afraid I would have been beaten silly by Cubs fans by the 4th inning, and then mocked hysterically the last 3. I should say this though….. It’s been my experience that Cubs fans at Wrigley are really cool to visiting fans. I will also say Cubs fans at Coors field are freaking obnoxious. Go figure!

Survival plan for remainder of the season

To get some enjoyment out of this baseball season, I’ve decided it’s time to adopt another ballclub to follow. I’ll still root for the Rox, but let’s face it—there will be no more meaningful games this season. I’ll enjoy watching the young guys, but an extended exhibition season doesn’t satisfy my baseball jones, so I gotta have a rooting interest in some team that won’t be mathematically eliminated by July 4th.

I’m thinking about Tampa Bay. they’re lovable underdogs, have lots of young talent and are competing against a couple of teams I really hate. So there you go—I’m now a Rays fan.

Just like that, I’ve gone from last to first! Check me out!

by BroJB on May 30, 2008 3:46 PM MDT reply actions

The Mets are my backup team

but they kind of suck too, and I would feel weird following them TOO much… but it’s possible.

My other team is the Brewers (I like their players, and they helped us out last yeah). Or the Rays, yeah, I can live with the Rays. Go Mets/Brewers/Rays!

We are all dead.

by Silverblood on May 30, 2008 3:49 PM MDT up reply actions

Well all right then....

Let’s get it started!

our beloved FIRST PLACE Rays take on the White Sox tonight. Our fine young big righty James Sheilds is on the hill.

I’ll have many complimentary things to say about the lineup as soon as I acquaint myself with who is actually on the team. :) Until then…..

Let’s go Rays!

by BroJB on May 30, 2008 3:54 PM MDT up reply actions

I suppose I should

put my extra innings subscription to use, right?

by moomacher on May 30, 2008 4:13 PM MDT up reply actions

Sure

And the beautiful thing about pulling for the Rays: there’s 0% chance of the team you’re rooting for having Yorvit Torrealba coming up in a clutch situation.

I mean, this is win-win-win!

Rays Mania. Can You Feel It?

by BroJB on May 30, 2008 4:51 PM MDT up reply actions

Great idea

The Brewers are always my fall-back team.

Honestly, for the last few weeks I’ve barely been following the rest of baseball. My team sucking so much makes it difficult for me to muster any real interest.

Perhaps if I try harder to follow the Brewers-and perhaps I’ll make the Rays my AL team-I can better enjoy baseball in general.

by dogs on May 30, 2008 5:09 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm on the same page

I love baseball, I really really love baseball. But I can’t watch or root for this Rockies team and organization. They are just lost. So so lost. And it’s not like there isn’t talent…..I’ve seen teams that had no talent. This isn’t one of them. This group should be a .500 team. Win a few, lose a few kinda team…...not lose ALL OF EM! Not be terrible in EVERY area! I just can’t stand it. I’d rather have meaningless AAA or AA baseball…..at least there you KNOW it’s meaningless.

So…..I’m looking square in the eye of a baseball-less summer…..no baseball. Sure I have a stack of tickets, but why? The Rockies won’t win any of them, and if they do win a couple…so what? It’s meaningless! I can’t do it. I need baseball, I love baseball. I’m thinking of getting Extra Innings, so I can follow another team….any team. I have a handful of fall back teams. The Cardinals and the Twins are having respectable seasons. Both can see the the division or Wild Card from where they are, but have young talent, both are well coached, and do the little things to win ball games.

So this Rockies team is so bad….they are about to get me to buy baseball package, just so I don’t have to watch the Rockies!

XM Radio is the best

I listen to Rays games on my way home from work (given my 45 minute commute). That’s usually good for 2.5 innings, or just long enough to hear Evan Longoria’s first at bat of the night.

by Prospector on May 30, 2008 11:50 PM MDT up reply actions

The worst thing about this season is that

we are now locked into a bunch of contracts for guys that may have had their career years last year: hawpe, corpas, francis, tulo. Plus there is always Helton, miscast as a franchise player when he is simply a good OBP guy now, nothing more.

by Roberbola on May 30, 2008 5:07 PM MDT reply actions

There's a glass half full side to this argument too,

That 2008 is the career low point for these guys and they’ll bounce back going forward. I think this is probably the case for at least a couple of those you mention. A couple others I’m not so sure about. The truth is probably somewhere between they all flop on their contracts and they all bounce back with great 2009’s, but none of these contracts are crippling or unmovable at this point.

by Rox Girl on May 30, 2008 6:06 PM MDT up reply actions

Is this a dream?

9-1 lead, I figured it was ok to go and do other things. This is certainly not what I expected to see when I came back to check the final boxscore. I don’t even know what to say now.
