Confessions of a reticent Rockhead

Although I have been keeping up with all things Purple Row, I haven’t posted much lately. Largely because I don’t what to say. The “State of the Rockies” is obvious, which is to say “a mess.”

I’m a diehard and I’ll never abandon ship, but I swear I don’t know what to think anymore. Our Rox are just plain terrible. Reading all the comments makes it more confounding to me. “Fire Hurdle” (+1), “Trade Yorvit, Matty, Garrett, whoever for some pitching.” Or not. (I’m on record for trading for some pitching, but not exactly sure who we might be trading for.) Thus is the life of a fan who loves his team, but really doesn’t follow the “leader board”, as it were. I truthfully don’t have the time or the energy.

Quite obviously our Rox are playing way below their skill level, but I’ll be damned if I can offer any real solutions. Help me out here fellow fans.

If Hurdle is fired, who gets the job? Vinny? Walt? Could either one really make a difference? I’d be in heavily in favor of Walt, but that’s only because he was, and remains, one of my favorite Rockies.

If DOD puts Matty (Yorvit, Garrett) on the trading block, who (what) can we realistically expect in return?

Is it all just hopeless this year, and we just look ahead to 2009? (I’m leaning toward this philosophy.)

As a fan, I’m just a mess right now. Trying to learn more about baseball, however, I’m asking those of you who have far more knowledge than I to help me make sense of what could, should, maybe-oughta happen.

Thanks for your help, Rowers. (We really have to find or invent a better word for all those who populate this wonderful place. But that’s probably a separate post/poll.)

I've been thinking about this:

The Hurdle conundrum is one I’ve had for a while. Who do we get instead that would be so much better? Finally it came to me. Here we have one of the worst win percentages in professional baseball, we just want a manager who’s capable of bringing out the most in his players, a guy who consistently will have a winning team out on that field even in retooling years. I realized that the answer might already be on the Rockies payroll. Down at our low A level, we have a team with the best record in professional baseball, one that’s been winning year in, year out regardless of the quality of players we put there with a manager who’s broken the storied team’s all-time win record.

I think it’s time we start a “Mik for Manager” campaign here on the Row. The one big negative is that he’s Ian Stewart’s father in law, so that might create a conflict of interest situation, but other than that, I can’t see any reason why not.

As for Holliday, I’ve said before that he’d be the most coveted bat on the market, so the Rockies would be able to get top tier prospects for him. Don’t expect to get much in the way of proven big-league help as contending teams wanting to add Holliday won’t be looking to do it at the cost of guys already helping them to contend, but in lieu of that I think we can expect to clean out the farm from said teams. I think this is the only way you get the maximum return in a trade for him.

Thanks for that insight

I had to look up Mikulik, but that’s why I turn to the Row for such help. You think he’d be able to handle the Bigs? Seems like a bit of a stretch to me given his bio, but I’m guessing he couldn’t mess things up worse than Hurdle.

I was kinda thinking along the same line as you with Holliday. I doubt any contending team would give up a good starter for him, but some excellent prospects (who are pretty darn close to ready) might be a good thing. If the prospects are pitchers, I should add.

My take

Firing Hurdle NOW doesn’t mean the temporary replacement will be the permanent manager. It does several things. One, tells the players that losing like this is not acceptable, and no player is secure, cause the next manager, may not like your crappy play. Two it tells the fans, that management feels your pain, and wants to make a simbolic move. AND lastly, and most importantly: It hangs a big “Job Opening: Help Wanted” sign for the off season, for every bench coach, and minor league manager in baseball. There are only 30 Big League Manager jobs, some one would die for even the Rockies job.

Who to move? I don’t think Holliday will bring much of a haul cause the Rockies need major league players…not AA “prospects”. Texiera didn’t exactly turn the Rangers around. One year later they have one part time player in Saltimatachi in the bigs from that trade. I’m not sure this is the right move for the Roxs at the moment. We don’t have big league talent….we have minor league talent (see Ashville’s record). Now Atkins might bring a little more, as he has another year before free agency, and his agent isn’t Boras (and easier for the Rockies cause we have Stewart to replace him). Oddly enough I think Tavares could get us a nice prospect or two, as would very easily replaced Brad Hawpe. I think we could dump Jeff Francis and get as big a haul as Holliday AND dump a pitcher that really looks like he’s going done the Mark Redman road. As for Torrealba…..we could get a 12 pack of Natty Light….and we’d be happy with that.

12 Pack? SOLD!!

Oh, wait, I misread, I thought you were offering…

I think you definitely undervalue the Teiexieira deal for the Rangers, although it was a lose-lose when it comes to the people who have to spell the names on the back of uniforms. The Braves win if they get to the playoffs this season, but the Rangers have a much brighter future in that division and league than they used to because of it.

How about Yorviet for An Oscar Gamble Baseball Card?

Seems like the Rockies would fleece who ever made that trade though. Maybe asking too much for Torri

Exactly
One, tells the players that losing like this is not acceptable, and no player is secure, cause the next manager, may not like your crappy play. Two it tells the fans, that management feels your pain, and wants to make a simbolic move.

I think these are the most important points. From a purely intangible viewpoint, axing Hurdle is one of the best things the Rockies can do right now. Granted, I don’t think it will have an immediate impact on the depth chart #2’s that we currently have out on the field, but when the regulars are back in the lineup, a managerial change would be a big mental shake-up for them. It would also reaffirm to a quickly diminishing fanbase that the Rockies are committed to winning, and that the FO really does want to bring a World Series trophy home to sit next to the Warren C. Giles one. I think we’d see a moderate boost in ticket sales. And what do you know, fan-friendly Interleague is right around the corner, with the Indians in town.

Also,

from a more tangible viewpoint, axing Hurdle is probably one of the best things the Rockies can do right now, too. Just a personal opinion.

Right now? I don't think so.....

There’s no way on earth that the Monforts, owners who have gone against public opinion in the past to give extensions to Hurdle, would fire him before he receives his honor of managing the All-Star game. Not gonna happen. It would be thought of as an act of “showing up” or “embarrassing” this long-time Rockies coach/manager a mere two months into a season after he got his team to the World Series. Ownership would also write off the past couple weeks of struggles to all the injuries and not lay that in Hurdle’s lap right now.

But AFTER the All-Star game, I hope all bets are off and Hurdle is shown the door if the team hasn’t made any major improvements in the way they are playing.

I tend to agree

with your assessment of the Hurdle situation. And I agree with Redhawk and oo_nrb that he needs to go NOW. It’s just that, as you said, the Monforts are extremely unlikely to make that change before the All Star game. What a mess. Still, I’ll hold out hope that the owners will somehow value the business of baseball more than their sentimental attachment to who guy who can clearly not get the best out his players.
