Game #35: Cook vs. Peavy

Colorado @ San Diego

One. Two. Three? With Cook on the mound, it might just be so. Probably an easier time without Peavy on the mound, but he is. Nothing like a little adversity to overcome in getting a third straight win.

Go Rockies!

Torrealba finally starting,

But he does really well against Peavy and Iannetta could probably use the rest so it shouldn’t be a surprise. Let’s not have this one go 22, I want to get to bed early tonight.

I don't

know who to blame more: the Mets or the weather. Silverblood and I had tickets for today’s Mets game against the Reds. It’s been raining all day, but the Mets were convinced they could get the game in. About 3:30 ET, the weather forecast said the heavy rain would end by game time. It did, but it picked back up a short time later. The game wasn’t postponed until close to 8:30.

Split-admission double header tomorrow.

We did

get to watch David Weathers and his son play catch. The kid has a good arm.

I don't know why I associate this with Weathers,

But the one clear memory I have of him pitching was when Eric Byrnes debuted for us. Jorge Piedra homered off him in the ninth inning, Byrnes struck out between the Piedra homer and an Atkins double and then Luis Gonzalez K’d to end it 4-3. Eric went zero for four that day, as he would often in his brief time with the Rockies.

What? What? Byrnes struck out? I’m shocked and stunned.

Wright fangirls are crazy

I’ve been to several Mets games at Shea this year (they’re my low-quality replacement for my Rockies) and seriously, it’s insane.

A different situation than usual for Cook

He doesn’t have to stop a losing streak this time, he gets the opportunity instead to extend a small winning streak.

If Cook is on top of his game like he has been all season, this should be a great pitching matchup. Hopefully we can scratch a few runs off Peavy and Cook can continue to be dominant.

Aaaaaand

the Pirates get a walk of single from Freddie Sanchez. Which means extra innings will be showing the beginning of the Rockies game. Excellent. By the way Snell finally pitched a good game in this one.

Not sure if anyone caught Webb's interview on First Take this morning

He said that the guy he’d least want to face with a man on second and two outs is Brad Hawpe.

Hard to believe, but thinking back it doesn’t seem like he’s beat us for a while. Let’s keep it that way.

Seven years

after O’Dowd traded Bard and Gerut to Cleveland for the immortal Jacob Cruz, they both end up on the Padres.

by alex colfax on May 9, 2008 8:34 PM MDT reply reply   0 recs

I know..,

This is kind of a historical occasion, cruelly mocking us with one of our worst trades ever. At least Cleveland didn’t get much from them either.

by Rox Girl on May 9, 2008 8:37 PM MDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I meant for them...

Actually Cleveland got quite a bit from them, next to the zilch we got from Cruz, and that’s why the trade was bad.

by Rox Girl on May 9, 2008 8:40 PM MDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I'm mocking O'Dowd, no one else...

As an ASU alum, I liked Cruz fine as a college player. But then Todd Hollandsworth got hurt and O’Dowd brought in a leftfielder every week that summer. Cruz might have been the worst position player in Rox history…and that’s no exaggeration if you ever saw him play.

What made it even worse is that O’Dowd (and Josh Byrnes) had come here from Cleveland and presumably had a good line of Indians prospects. Apparently not, as it turned out.

I guess I understand Hurdle giving Netta the night off...

Even though I am a huge Netta fan. However, why didn’t he hit Barmes above Yorvit? Also heard on another board from someone listening to the radio that surprise, surprise Hurdle still considers Torre the #1 catcher.

"From now on let's stop worrying about winning and losing, just go out and play and have fun. If you make an error forget it, if you strike out who cares. Just as long as you hustle."

~Billy Heywood ~ Little Big League

by AtkinsandTulofan on May 9, 2008 8:43 PM MDT reply reply   0 recs

I'm guessing it's just lip service, actually

Torre’s still the #1 catcher who will happen to play less than the #2, but I’m guessing Hurdle’s hoping the title placates his veteran.
