Anybody else excited about opening night for Casper and Tri-City?

I’m particularly excited about the toolsy outfield of the Dust-Devils. Blackmon gets all the press, but Reyes and Robinson both have a lot of potential.

Wow,

when was the last time we saw Reynolds strike out a guy?

Two strikeouts for Reynolds, zero homeruns.

I don’t like how this bodes for the next three innings if he’s out to keep things equitable this season.

So, out of extreme curiosity

And seeing as it’s a slow thread tonight…...how is it that Purple Row came to be? Having just found the Row last fall, I’ve often wondered what inspired you and Rox Girl to start this crazy-wonderful place on the web.

Blame the Red Sox!

Rox Girl

can give you the details on how she came to SBN and Purple Row. I was a commenter at her original blog (Baseball on Blake Street) and followed her on over here. She disappeared during the ‘05-’06 offseason, which lead Blez, the company president and blogger at Athletics Nation, to ask me to take over the site just a few days before the ‘06 season started. She came back and we’ve been doing this ever since.

There’s a post from 28 April 2007 that goes into this, since we celebrated the site’s second birthday that day.

I had been blogging about the Rockies for a little while

When Tyler at AN asked me to be part of the SBN network and that’s how it started. Russ became the co-blogger when I went AWOL for a while during a pretty rough personal stretch. I started blogging about the Rockies because I was frustrated that the coverage was either company shilling from the local media or total disregard from the national media and there didn’t seem to be many outlets for thoughtful Rockies related analysis. At about the same time Dan Lucero (who’s one of the bloggers at Up in the Rockies) started, and I like to think we helped fill that void.

I haven't

seen anything written by Dan over there in quite some time.

Hanging it up

Russ, I hung up the blogging shoes around March – the blog was in capable hands and I needed to focus on college graduation and finding employment (the former went as planned, the latter… not so much yet). I may yet resurface with a different blog where I can just put all my sports thoughts in one place, once I get a little more situated. But I’m proud to say that mine was one of the originals.

Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.

by Franchise26 on Jun 17, 2008 9:33 PM MDT up reply actions

And indeed you have

When I found the Row, I was so tired of reading what I thought was nothing more than the “company line” in the local press. A certain columnist named Krieger being the exception. As a fan, I’m extremely grateful. I can actually discuss some statistical stuff now (emphasis on some) that I was clueless about last year.

guilty as charged.

Hey, I’ve watched every Greg Reynolds start this season, and let’s just say he’s given me about nine reasons to doubt so far.

by Rox Girl on Jun 17, 2008 8:57 PM MDT up reply actions

Maybe so, but

you still had to believe the ability was still there. You aren’t one to jump to conclusions on young guys so easily.

by David OhNo on Jun 17, 2008 8:59 PM MDT up reply actions

Oh, I knew the ability was there,

And that it was bound to come through at some point. Bases loaded with none out after his past seven starts wasn’t the time I would have guessed for that point.

by Rox Girl on Jun 17, 2008 9:01 PM MDT up reply actions

True, and it was still a hard liner

I’m more impressed by the K on Garko, especially going back to the fastball he seems to lack confidence in, and i think it caught Garko off guard, who appeared to look curve.

Iannetta’s ability to randomize sequences and keep hitters off balance should serve Reynolds very well.

by David OhNo on Jun 17, 2008 9:03 PM MDT up reply actions

I too confess

by rockhead on Jun 17, 2008 9:08 PM MDT reply actions

For the record

I’m not a big Speier fan, and think he may be a good sell high type as a throw in player to a trade. I think his fringy command of fringy stuff is more troubling than we let on.

by David OhNo on Jun 17, 2008 9:15 PM MDT reply actions

I've always just thought of him as a decent get the job done middle reliever

Sort of like Matt Herges where he’s clever enough to get weaker hitters out, and clever enough to let the stronger ones get on with walks or singles only to limit the damage that gets done.

by Rox Girl on Jun 17, 2008 9:20 PM MDT up reply actions

That's fair, but

that also is a pretty easy reliever to find.

With the Rockies developing a base of talented, hard throwing relievers in the minors, my hope is that guys like Speier don’t stand in their way to the show, just because he”gets the job done.” On this team, that seems to be the standard evaluaion tool.

by David OhNo on Jun 17, 2008 9:23 PM MDT up reply actions

See, I'm conflicted here...

Because just getting rid of him because a guy throws hard could be equally troubling. And I know this is what you mean, but preferably we only get rid of him when we have a guy who throws hard and gets the job done and don’t go dumping somebody who does have value just because somebody else has unrealized potential.

by Rox Girl on Jun 17, 2008 9:26 PM MDT up reply actions

True

I was primarily speaking about Harris, Weathers, Weatherford, Strop (when healthy), and to a degree Morillo.

I also think having Speier in a pen only supports outdated bullpen structures. Speier lacks the stuff and command to consistently pitch in leverage situations, and rather than having mop up guys, long men, seventh inning set up, etc. you should just have the seven best guys capable of pitching in leverage situations.

Doug Bernier is on our active roster?

by Tom (RFTN) on Jun 17, 2008 9:22 PM MDT up reply actions

is he not here yet?

we’ve just had a relief pitcher bat, and Reynolds hit for himself before being lifted last inning.

by David OhNo on Jun 17, 2008 9:25 PM MDT up reply actions

Possibly

It’s also possible that the Rockies only called him up because MLB rules require them to carry 25 players on the active roster.

by Tom (RFTN) on Jun 17, 2008 9:27 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm just saying

now would be a good time for him to get his “show moment.”

Way off topic, but I found in my run to the grocery store that the main Cleveland “blowtorch” is just strong enough to give me about 3 words every 15 seconds, on average. I did hear the end of the promising fifth.
