Complete Coverage >

The good news for Jhoulys Chacin is that he still has a shot at a long and glorious career with the Rockies should his right handed version of a Johan Santana-like changeup ever reach the majors. The bad news is that for this week, he's the reason we're at the bottom of the standings, the reason that anything and everything is going wrong with the club, the reason we're all moaning, because his was the name that was drawn to be our Official Purple Row Scapegoat of the Week.

So again: anything bad tonight, this week, IT'S ALL CHACIN'S FAULT. Got it? Serves him right for having a name that nobody can figure out. Hopefully the rest of the team can do enough good to overcome our #4 prospect's multitude of failings.

Go Rockies!

I was up late writing last night,

I am already really tired, but I’ll probably be around for most of the game tonight. You’re probably right, though, we never seem to do well at Dodger Stadium, no thanks to Chacin.

Can always

hope for a game under two hours. But that would likely mean Derek Lowe throws a perfect game, and Juan Pierre hits a home run to start the game, the only hit in the game.

As long as he’s the Scapegoat, let’s play anagram with his name!

He went to two pitches on every batter there

For the last four they were all fastballs and changeups. There won’t be much swinging and missing unless he mixes all four effectively. I’m not blaming Yorvit since it’s all Chacin’s fault this week, but Jhoulys made our catcher make some pretty predictable pitch calls that inning.

The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season

by moomacher on Jun 2, 2008 8:37 PM MDT up reply actions

They're a recent development...

Nowhere in his minor league record, so I’m guessing he’s still adjusting to more advanced hitters being less forgiving of mistakes and he’ll be more careful as he goes along. It’s been argued by some that this would be better learned at the AAA level, but without better starting alternatives for the team, I don’t see any reason that it couldn’t also be learned and learned quickly apparently as experience is a harsh teacher at the MLB level.

by Rox Girl on Jun 2, 2008 8:40 PM MDT up reply actions

Same thing was said about Jimenez

last year, in fact some predicted he’d lead the league in homers allowed annually. To date, the homer totals are way down.

I think homer totals are all a part of learning to pitch at the big league level. Rookies are generally trying to be too fine, and haven’t developed a consistent plan for hitters, etc. Reynolds GB numbers in the minors are more important than this small sample size.

We shouldn’t panic every time a sub 25 year old struggles. It happens more than it doesn’t. Reynolds will see his GB rate climb the more he gains comfort in this league.

by David OhNo on Jun 2, 2008 8:41 PM MDT up reply actions

considering that evaluating young pitchers

at AAA leads the team to make decisions about millions of dollars of payroll on the major league club, yeah you would think that they could spare the $50,000.

Interesting quotes by Geivett at BA today.
“We don’t have to teach them anything. The game teaches them. If you get the ball up and if you walk people in Colorado Springs, you’re going to have problems. All in all, it’s good. But it’s also important that you don’t get pitchers to shy away from contact.

“Now I say that about Colorado Springs, but that’s anywhere. We tell players to use it as a tool and not an excuse.”

Watching Vin Scully here

after giving up my tickets to the game (will hopefully make the next two). Vin points out that GR can’t keep the ball in the yard and can’t pitch past the 4th so far. I know that many of y’all are really in favor of letting him “learn” up here, so I’ll refrain from going into great detail on my thoughts, but…I just don’t see it. He does not look like a legit MLB pitcher right now, and letting him get killed every 5 days with no run support seems like a bad plan to me.

Chase down the Padres, then the Giants.

The only thing that keeps me going is the fact that the Rox have played so many road games 31-26 to date and 55% of their remaining games are at home. They traditionally play better at home, so a second place finish is still a possibility.

Reynolds' stubbornness the most frustrating

It’s not that he lacks the ability to throw strikes, he simply refuse to catch the fat part of the plate every now and then.

When you’re 6’7 with a solid sinker, you can probably throw it down broadway more often than most and not get burned. If you always try to nibble, they soon expect the fat pitch.

I’d like to see the Rockies’ staff tell Reynolds to throw no chase pitches for one game, and instead pound the zone with the variety of his stuff, just to see the difference.

He might just surprise himself.

by David OhNo on Jun 2, 2008 9:38 PM MDT reply actions

I don't think his secondary pitches are strong enough for that..

and he’s given up HR’s when he pounds the middle of the plate.

by Charlie77 on Jun 2, 2008 9:39 PM MDT up reply actions

Mostly behind in the count

I think teams lately have just waited him out to get that pitch. I’m not really talking about his secondary stuff as much either (though his curve doesn’t get the credit it deserves). He needs to attack with the fastball. He dominated in Tulsa with the fastball, and he can have success with it here as well, just let it ride and rely on the guys behind you, homers be damned.

I’m not suggesting it as a permanent change, but as a learning experience, and something to add some volatility to his scouting reports.

by David OhNo on Jun 2, 2008 9:44 PM MDT up reply actions

I actually

like the sharp little curve and I’d love to see it more. Seems like his best shot at an out pitch. But the 89 mph heat really doesn’t seem like its going to be enough. At his size, even a few more mph would be nice because he could really bear down on people. But nobody is scared of 89 at this level, no matter how tall you are.

I know he can reach 94 with the four

but he lacks movement with it. Still, like you, I think he needs to show it more.

It’s all part of the learning process, and I’m still a big fan of Reynolds, it can just be frustrating to watch and easy to lose sight of the big picture.

There are 3 teams in the National League with worse batting averages than the Rockies (Brewers, Padres, Nationals). It just seems worse than it is.

I know I haven't posted in a long while

Mostly due to me feeling inferior to most you guys baseball knowledge wise, but wow this team is absolutely, dreadfully, abysmally god awful. I have watched pretty much every game this year and have seen a lot of bad baseball teams but wow, this 08 Rockies team ranks right up there with some of the all-time worst I have ever seen. They are an utter disgrace to the game right now. I honestly don’t see how they lose less than 100 games this year, in fact I really can’t picture them winning a single game right now even though it is obvious they will at some point. This has just been torture. The worst team I ever watched on a consistent basis was the Nuggets 03 team before they drafted Melo who only won 17 games all year long and watching the Rockies this year has brought me back to the feeling I had watching that Nuggets team. Just unbelievable how bad we are. And I’m done venting…..

Seconded.

But I’ll keep watching, I guess.

Me too

And just like you said in your previous post, I look forward to the games each day I wake up and usually by the 3rd or 4th by the time we are down 4-1 or something and I’ve seen our starting pitcher walk their 4th guy of the night my interest completely dwindles down and I do other things. This has just gotten ridiculous.

2008 All-Star game

What’s sad is this was the Rockies year to load up on All-Star players since Hurdle was the selector. But with as bad as they are playing the only Rockies reserve I see him selecting is Torrealba.

Man.

This used to be fun. It’s funny how I still look forward to every game, but now I always end up paying more attention to the book I’m reading or whatever else I’m doing. It’s no longer exciting when the offense is coming up, and most of the pitchers are excrutiating to watch. It’s just not fun.

Ok, excuse the moment of negativity.

But the one thing the storm doesn't take away

is your wife, who you’d like to see leave but now you have this hardship to fight through. Yet she keeps playing this punchless catcher…

Yep

During the intermission I was watching Mike Rowe clean out a sinkhole in Kentucky on Dirty Jobs. At this point that is better than watching the Rockies.

whats the differenence

Well David...

Your wife’s catcher just cut the lead to 8-2 and he handles the young latin pitchers well, such as Franklin Morales and DLR.

Same reason as me?

You look forward to the post-game rants in the game thread?

Love to stay and rant

But I really need to go to my peaceful place, where I never think about this team. A.K.A. bed.

Blame the Red Sox!
