(updated 6.20.2008 at 10:10 AM EDT)

See? Moving up. And with his return tonight, Tulo will look to get back on track just as the Rockies have done recently.

Apparently this is news: "Thanks to wins, Holliday not on trading block"

Jerry Manuel is a funny guy. After Jose Reyes had a tantrum in Tuesday''s game, Manuel eventually talked with Reyes:

"I told him next time he does that I'm going to get my blade out and cut him. I'm a gangster. You go gangster on me, I'm going to have to get you. You do that again, I'm going to cut you right on the field," quipped Manuel[.]

Everyone better stay on Manuel's good side.

The Mets make their second trip to Colorado this season. Aaron Cook opposes John Maine tonight. That feels a bit familiar.

Not sure it's the Wins that Holliday isn't on the block

but rather the Rockies demands:
from a Yahoo columnist on buyers and sellers this summer. Rockies were listed under sellers
Colorado Rockies – Holliday, one year away from free agency and one of the best hitters in baseball, is being shopped, although word from rival GMs is that the Rockies want the moon, stars and a low-frequency astral plane in return.

Colorado Rockies: Continuing a long tradition of playing meaningless games in June!

by Redhawk on Jun 20, 2008 9:22 AM MDT   0 recs

Hmm... let's see if we can figure out which "rival GMs" those would be:
Steve Henson is the MLB editor for Yahoo! Sports. He previously worked at the Los Angeles Times, where he covered Major League baseball, college football and college basketball and did investigative reporting.

Arizona Diamondbacks – Baby ‘Backs have grown into Adolescent ‘Backs and the pitching is postseason primed. But should they lull themselves into complacency because the rest of the NL West is pathetic and fail to land a bat, they will regret it in October.
Los Angeles Dodgers – GM Ned Colletti brought in Greg Maddux at the deadline two years ago and came up empty last year. Always loath to part with his cadre of inexpensive producers, landing sorely needed power (Matt Holliday) or sorely needed starting pitching (Rich Harden) is a longshot.

Let’s see Western reporter, with mostly Western contacts, with NL West teams wanting bats. Uhm, yeah, like we’re just going to give Matty away to the frickin’ Dodgers or D-backs. I’m certainly glad that O’Dowd’s holding out for that astral plane, here.

I didn't know

all that about Henson, and I assumed it was the Dodgers too.

I’m not too sure about the Astral Plane….I’ve known some people who have claimed to have been there, and they came back weird…well maybe they were weird prior….but who am I to say

Yeah…. WHEN exactly is the last time we traded for a power bat? Richie Sexson? Raul Mondesi??

Another absurd O'Dowd quote

“Expectation is the worst thing you can put on a club” from Kiszla’s column in today’s Post.

Appararently in O’Dowdworld, the thing to do is aspire to mediocrity so there will be no expectations of future success.

Perhaps that explains his perpetual caution. Or is it simply an attempted excuse for the team’s woeful (20-38) start?

by alex colfax on Jun 20, 2008 9:26 AM MDT   0 recs

O'Dowd

That was the most ridiculous blather I’ve ever heard from any GM.
put his foot in his mouth with the most ridiculous blather about expectations I’ve ever heard. If O’Dowd and the coaching staff and the players can’t deal with expectations they should find another line of work.
The finest aspire to mediocrity article I’ve ever read.

by DieHardRox on Jun 20, 2008 12:47 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

I disagree here,

After reading so many comments by Mets fans on other sites over the last few hours, I’m seeing this frame of reference as common to Boston/New York/Philly fans where there’s this sense that anything short of the highest possible standard of achievement from day one is failure. “If you’re not first, you’re last,” to quote Ricky Bobby.

In O’Dowd’s statements I see a more nuanced zen-like approach, where he deflects the concept of these nebulous expectations, yet a higher standard is still held which can only be reached through the perfection of smaller tasks (locating pitches, relaxing swings, etc…) on the way to the ultimate goal. For a born again Christian, this is a surprisingly Eastern influenced philosophy to take. It still could be self-preserving BS, but the underlying philosophy is a much better frame to mount a comeback with than the “You’ve already shown that you’re losers, the only way for this team to succeed is start with somebody else who will show that they’re different” approach.

I notice

another manager with a better record than Hurdle being fired. But Gibbons and Randolph were burdened with the dreaded expectations.

by DieHardRox on Jun 20, 2008 6:05 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

You really think Gibbons and Randolph were better than Hurdle?

Have you been looking at the Mets lineups or their bullpen usage? If you think the Rockies are terrible at situational hitting, you wouldn’t believe the stench that comes from Toronto with RISP. I’m certainly not saying Hurd;e’s a good manager, but neither of those guys are better examples.

by Rox Girl on Jun 20, 2008 6:14 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

I've

been watching and playing baseball for 60 years and IMO Hurdle as a strategist and handler of pitchers is one of the worst I’ve ever seen. I didn’t say they were better managers but their career won lost records were better. Mainly it was a play on expectations.

by DieHardRox on Jun 20, 2008 6:44 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

More telling

is Hurdle’s comments on Stewart at the bottom of the snippet. I was wondering what kind of roster shuffle would be performed with the impending Tulo/Barmes returns. It sounds like Stewart may go out first. Bernier second (although Barmes has not been raking as much as AAA). Perhaps they will extend Barmes for a while longer and keep Bernier up. Was pulling for him to get a hit last night as he appears on borrowed time and may never see a ML field again. Q has played well enough to stay.

Ian Stewart is rapidly approaching enigma status. His total lack of plate discipline and focus is a concern. I think his nearly 50% KO ratio will make his ability to move him for some arms problematic. Needless to say itis obvious that Atkins is the choice here for long term. Can they ink him? Does the play of Baker now figure in the mixat 3rd?

by PinchHitLancePainter on Jun 20, 2008 9:48 AM MDT   0 recs

I think you are still way too quick to write off Stewart.

The strikeout ratio is a big concern, but it’s not nearly the impossible to improve flaw that you make it out to be. In fact, his near 30% line drive rate in his MLB career and the big time power he’s shown is a huge plus that shows that his skills could still translate to stardom at the MLB stage.

Not every decent pitcher that’s employed the inside heat, breaking balls in the dirt strategy has been successful with it, which tells me that the capability to correct this is there with Ian and it seems to be an issue that improves with practice for him.

I don’t know, I’m thinking we’re both carrying fairly substantial biases into this argument, so I’m trying to figure out where a more balanced and neutral view would lie, but I can tell for sure that the K issues are not quite as extreme and problematic for Stewart as you insist.

by Rox Girl on Jun 20, 2008 10:05 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

The thing is

I don’t see how they can keep yo-yoing him in and out of the lineup and up and down 1-25 and expect this problem to be resolved. He needs to either be a fulltime starter on the big club, or a fulltime starter in AAA until a decision is reached on Atkins. Having sit around on the bench cracking jokes with Pods and Spils, waiting to face some good 8th inning reliever in a leverage situation, is not going to improve his skills or his trade value.

And for what its worth, count me in the “keep Atkins if possible” camp.

by Teekalong on Jun 20, 2008 10:16 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Atkins defense has improved to the point..

That he’s not a liability and should stick around. Stewart needs to work on some plate discipline at AAA before becoming a full-time starter.

Congratulations to Ken Griffey Jr. on his 600th HR!

by Charlie77 on Jun 20, 2008 10:18 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree with you on Stewie...

He’s still young enough that he can spend another full year in AAA and the Rockies’ shouldn’t have to feel the need to keep him on the big league roster without giving him the at-bats he needs to work out the kinks. They do, however, need to send him back down with a plan and an approach that will help him get out of his K funk.

Rock rock 'til you drop!

by theoldgrizzlybear on Jun 20, 2008 10:26 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm also there

I’m not impressed yet with Stewart. He has potential, but he’s a LONG ways away from being a major leaguer. I’m not completely sold that he will become what many hope he will be. The other issue, is I’m not sure AAA has good enough pitching for him to learn (and I’m not sure we have good enough instructors their either).

We do have Garrett through 2010 which gives us some time, but as he chastised Francis for taking a less then market deal, I don’t expect Atkins to re-sign and expect him to find out his market worth (ie free agent), so his clock IS ticking.

AND Holliday is gone after this year I’d assume, so the Rockies are looking at losing their best 2 bats in the next few years, and I don’t see any replacements of equal quality on the horizon.

That last paragraph (plus Helton)

is what scares me and why I favor keeping Atkins unless he wants a silly amount of money.

Bernier

Does anyone know why Bernier is up and Herrera is down at AAA?

by Fos on Jun 20, 2008 10:02 AM MDT   0 recs

Rules say a player must be down at least 10 days.

When assigned to a minor league squad, and since Herrera was just sent down, he was inelligible to be called right back up.

by Rox Girl on Jun 20, 2008 10:07 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

He was sent down when Bellorin was recalled

due to Torrealba’s suspension. Unfortunate scenario for Herrera but a fortuitous one ineed for Bernier, who likely owes his MLBB debut to Matt Kemp’s pugnacity.

Also in the Post this morning was an article about Friedrich

http://www.denverpost.com/sports/ci_9643040

So, does the article indicate that he’s going to pitch on Sunday, or report to the club on sunday? I’m a little confused. Given the results of the las three days, Tri City could have an awesome rotation. Either that, or the Indians are just really, really bad.

Caught it...

Laughed my ass off.

On a related note, the inning with Scott Podsednik’s wife made me look forward to going to the game tonight and visiting the Rockies Wive’s fund raiser!

Just a plug – 40$ gets you a grab bag of something or other (a ball maybe?) signed by one of the players. It all goes toward a good cause (Hurdle’s foundation and some others). I vaguely remember them doing this in prior years.

You should have given more of a warning. I’m at work right now.

Why does it seem like it’s always the pedestrian players (and not the stars) like Pods and Kris Benson who have the really, really hot wives?

add Mark Kotsay to that list as well…

by Hizilla on Jun 20, 2008 1:07 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

No, it's not just the pedestrian players

I was working at a smalltown newspaper right after college, and our sports editor somehow got permission to go cover Astros’ spring training.

When he got back, we asked him, “Who was the most impressive person you saw in Spring Training?”

His answer: Nolan Ryan’s wife.

There is a bright side to the '08 season.
Barry Bonds & Roger Clemens are out of baseball.

by maris61 on Jun 20, 2008 1:36 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Of course

Part of the explanation in Pods’s case is that if they got married in ‘06, that was after he was already a big leaguer. Some of these guys get married while they’re still in the minor leagues.

June 26

I like the Rockies chances to make up ground over the next 6 days. The dBacks are 4-6 over their last 10 road games and head to Minnesota and Boston for the next week. The Twins and Red Stalkers are tough at home this year and rank 4th and 1st in the AL in home record.

Congratulations to Ken Griffey Jr. on his 600th HR!

by Charlie77 on Jun 20, 2008 10:17 AM MDT   0 recs

The down side of that

is the Rockies have to play a suddenly hot Royals team on the road. Rockies have to win series if not sweep. 4-2 would be ok, but I’d rather have another sweep.

by rockiesfan4ever on Jun 20, 2008 11:40 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree, that's going to be a surprising irresistable force/immovable object series

As the Royals are particularly fierce against the NL, while the Rox are particularly fierce against the AL. I think retribution for last year’s Coors Field fiasco is sorely needed. The Zach Greinke/Jorge de la Rosa tilt next Tuesday followed by Hochevar/Cook on Wednesday look to be natural pivot games full of complex, star-crossed storylines (completely lost with the MSM, of course) where we can really test the legitimacy of this season’s team.

It’s just a situation where we’ll need to prove that we’re more capable than the D-backs of beating a weak AL team. Wins will be a hold signal, losses will be a pretty clear sell sign. I’m probably overstating, but I think that series looms as large as any first half series can in importance for the team this year.

by Rox Girl on Jun 20, 2008 11:56 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

I totally agree

and who’d a thunk it that this series may be the make or break of the season for the Rockies? I mean it’s the Royals.

Quintanilla's Nickname

In the game thread last night, there discussion of Q’s (lack of a creative) nickname. I’m not sure how many people read “The Dugout,” but the basic premise is that it’s fake IM chats between players. If ind it hilarious (it’s one of those things that either you find hilarious or not funny at all; like LOL Cats), but they’ve taken to live blogging some games as well. Last night (I missed it until this morning), they did the Rockies game. The whole thing is right here:

http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2008/06/19/interleague-baseball-is-boring-cleveland-rockies-live-blog/

and they were searching for a nickname for Q as well:

VerbalQuint (this one I’ll admit that I don’t quite get)
-My_Super_Sweet_Quintinilla
-Quintaro
“The Hedgehog”
-Tanilla Gorilla (My personal favorite)

Sadly, they didn’t get “The Quintesson” for all you Transformers fan.

Postseason odds

Thanks to our weak division, BP’s postseason odds projector still gives us a 7.4% chance of making the playoffs.

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/ps_odds.php

I’m quite sure that at some point last August we had less of a shot. So it might be less of a miracle to make the playoffs from this position than it was last year.

The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season

by moomacher on Jun 20, 2008 2:22 PM MDT   0 recs

We were at less than 1% on June 2nd

When we were 18 games under .500, so it would still be a comparable miracle, but the D-backs sure are spoiling the fun by losing so much. We could have had a really good shot at the greatest comeback ever had they won a few more games in May.

Brandon Phillips

Not to change the subject or anything, but I’ve been trolling for a solution to our 2B issue for a while (I brought up Roberts & Ellis in the past). Another thought occured to me today when I read that Walt Jocketty is reported to have excluded Brandon Phillips from his list of untouchable players (Votto, Bruce, Cueto, Volquez, Encarnacion).

Here’s a player who is 27, owed 22.5M over the next 3 years, and has established himself as a 800-850 OPS guy over the last several years. That represents a decent upgrade over what we got last year at 2B. I’m not ready to make any comparisons to our performance at 2B this year because I don’t know how much of Barmes’ resurgence is legit.

Anyway, I thought I’d throw it out there – if we decide to spend some money and ink Atkins, a Stewart + prospect/s for Phillips seems reasonable.

If Barmes goes back to struggling and we continue to surge, 2B seems like a top priority for a playoff push.

by Roberbola on Jun 20, 2008 4:25 PM MDT   0 recs

It's a good idea,

Phillips is a class of athlete that would be hard to take a pass on. He’s definitely one of my favorite parts of watching Reds games, and that was before I came here. As with any trade, I would think it would come down to not giving up too much, but he’d be worth quite a bit. I’m going to say that people are still overplaying Atkins’ value, but I’d be willing to give up Stewart for Phillips anyway and take the decline phase with Garrett.

I have one caveat and that would be for the club to also go out on a monetary limb for Chris Dominguez as a higher potential Atkins heir than Holcomb.

by Rox Girl on Jun 20, 2008 4:58 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Agreed

Stewart would be a nice pick up for them, too. I can’t even think of who their 3B is, which usually isn’t a good sign. (Just looked it up Ed Encarnacion is. And he sucks).

It would do an awful lot to help this ballclub, that’s for sure. Which is probably why it would never happen.
