Friday Morning Rockpile:
See? Moving up. And with his return tonight, Tulo will look to get back on track just as the Rockies have done recently.
Apparently this is news: "Thanks to wins, Holliday not on trading block"
Jerry Manuel is a funny guy. After Jose Reyes had a tantrum in Tuesday''s game, Manuel eventually talked with Reyes:
"I told him next time he does that I'm going to get my blade out and cut him. I'm a gangster. You go gangster on me, I'm going to have to get you. You do that again, I'm going to cut you right on the field," quipped Manuel[.]
Everyone better stay on Manuel's good side.
The Mets make their second trip to Colorado this season. Aaron Cook opposes John Maine tonight. That feels a bit familiar.

Not sure it's the Wins that Holliday isn't on the block
but rather the Rockies demands:
from a Yahoo columnist on buyers and sellers this summer. Rockies were listed under sellers
Colorado Rockies – Holliday, one year away from free agency and one of the best hitters in baseball, is being shopped, although word from rival GMs is that the Rockies want the moon, stars and a low-frequency astral plane in return.

Hmm... let's see if we can figure out which "rival GMs" those would be:
Steve Henson is the MLB editor for Yahoo! Sports. He previously worked at the Los Angeles Times, where he covered Major League baseball, college football and college basketball and did investigative reporting.
Arizona Diamondbacks – Baby ‘Backs have grown into Adolescent ‘Backs and the pitching is postseason primed. But should they lull themselves into complacency because the rest of the NL West is pathetic and fail to land a bat, they will regret it in October.
Los Angeles Dodgers – GM Ned Colletti brought in Greg Maddux at the deadline two years ago and came up empty last year. Always loath to part with his cadre of inexpensive producers, landing sorely needed power (Matt Holliday) or sorely needed starting pitching (Rich Harden) is a longshot.
Let’s see Western reporter, with mostly Western contacts, with NL West teams wanting bats. Uhm, yeah, like we’re just going to give Matty away to the frickin’ Dodgers or D-backs. I’m certainly glad that O’Dowd’s holding out for that astral plane, here.

Another absurd O'Dowd quote
“Expectation is the worst thing you can put on a club” from Kiszla’s column in today’s Post.
Appararently in O’Dowdworld, the thing to do is aspire to mediocrity so there will be no expectations of future success.
Perhaps that explains his perpetual caution. Or is it simply an attempted excuse for the team’s woeful (20-38) start?

I disagree here,
After reading so many comments by Mets fans on other sites over the last few hours, I’m seeing this frame of reference as common to Boston/New York/Philly fans where there’s this sense that anything short of the highest possible standard of achievement from day one is failure. “If you’re not first, you’re last,” to quote Ricky Bobby.
In O’Dowd’s statements I see a more nuanced zen-like approach, where he deflects the concept of these nebulous expectations, yet a higher standard is still held which can only be reached through the perfection of smaller tasks (locating pitches, relaxing swings, etc…) on the way to the ultimate goal. For a born again Christian, this is a surprisingly Eastern influenced philosophy to take. It still could be self-preserving BS, but the underlying philosophy is a much better frame to mount a comeback with than the “You’ve already shown that you’re losers, the only way for this team to succeed is start with somebody else who will show that they’re different” approach.

You really think Gibbons and Randolph were better than Hurdle?
Have you been looking at the Mets lineups or their bullpen usage? If you think the Rockies are terrible at situational hitting, you wouldn’t believe the stench that comes from Toronto with RISP. I’m certainly not saying Hurd;e’s a good manager, but neither of those guys are better examples.

I've
been watching and playing baseball for 60 years and IMO Hurdle as a strategist and handler of pitchers is one of the worst I’ve ever seen. I didn’t say they were better managers but their career won lost records were better. Mainly it was a play on expectations.

More telling
is Hurdle’s comments on Stewart at the bottom of the snippet. I was wondering what kind of roster shuffle would be performed with the impending Tulo/Barmes returns. It sounds like Stewart may go out first. Bernier second (although Barmes has not been raking as much as AAA). Perhaps they will extend Barmes for a while longer and keep Bernier up. Was pulling for him to get a hit last night as he appears on borrowed time and may never see a ML field again. Q has played well enough to stay.
Ian Stewart is rapidly approaching enigma status. His total lack of plate discipline and focus is a concern. I think his nearly 50% KO ratio will make his ability to move him for some arms problematic. Needless to say itis obvious that Atkins is the choice here for long term. Can they ink him? Does the play of Baker now figure in the mixat 3rd?

I think you are still way too quick to write off Stewart.
The strikeout ratio is a big concern, but it’s not nearly the impossible to improve flaw that you make it out to be. In fact, his near 30% line drive rate in his MLB career and the big time power he’s shown is a huge plus that shows that his skills could still translate to stardom at the MLB stage.
Not every decent pitcher that’s employed the inside heat, breaking balls in the dirt strategy has been successful with it, which tells me that the capability to correct this is there with Ian and it seems to be an issue that improves with practice for him.
I don’t know, I’m thinking we’re both carrying fairly substantial biases into this argument, so I’m trying to figure out where a more balanced and neutral view would lie, but I can tell for sure that the K issues are not quite as extreme and problematic for Stewart as you insist.

The thing is
I don’t see how they can keep yo-yoing him in and out of the lineup and up and down 1-25 and expect this problem to be resolved. He needs to either be a fulltime starter on the big club, or a fulltime starter in AAA until a decision is reached on Atkins. Having sit around on the bench cracking jokes with Pods and Spils, waiting to face some good 8th inning reliever in a leverage situation, is not going to improve his skills or his trade value.
And for what its worth, count me in the “keep Atkins if possible” camp.

That he’s not a liability and should stick around. Stewart needs to work on some plate discipline at AAA before becoming a full-time starter.

I agree with you on Stewie...
He’s still young enough that he can spend another full year in AAA and the Rockies’ shouldn’t have to feel the need to keep him on the big league roster without giving him the at-bats he needs to work out the kinks. They do, however, need to send him back down with a plan and an approach that will help him get out of his K funk.

I'm also there
I’m not impressed yet with Stewart. He has potential, but he’s a LONG ways away from being a major leaguer. I’m not completely sold that he will become what many hope he will be. The other issue, is I’m not sure AAA has good enough pitching for him to learn (and I’m not sure we have good enough instructors their either).
We do have Garrett through 2010 which gives us some time, but as he chastised Francis for taking a less then market deal, I don’t expect Atkins to re-sign and expect him to find out his market worth (ie free agent), so his clock IS ticking.
AND Holliday is gone after this year I’d assume, so the Rockies are looking at losing their best 2 bats in the next few years, and I don’t see any replacements of equal quality on the horizon.

I agree, that's going to be a surprising irresistable force/immovable object series
As the Royals are particularly fierce against the NL, while the Rox are particularly fierce against the AL. I think retribution for last year’s Coors Field fiasco is sorely needed. The Zach Greinke/Jorge de la Rosa tilt next Tuesday followed by Hochevar/Cook on Wednesday look to be natural pivot games full of complex, star-crossed storylines (completely lost with the MSM, of course) where we can really test the legitimacy of this season’s team.
It’s just a situation where we’ll need to prove that we’re more capable than the D-backs of beating a weak AL team. Wins will be a hold signal, losses will be a pretty clear sell sign. I’m probably overstating, but I think that series looms as large as any first half series can in importance for the team this year.

Brandon Phillips
Not to change the subject or anything, but I’ve been trolling for a solution to our 2B issue for a while (I brought up Roberts & Ellis in the past). Another thought occured to me today when I read that Walt Jocketty is reported to have excluded Brandon Phillips from his list of untouchable players (Votto, Bruce, Cueto, Volquez, Encarnacion).
Here’s a player who is 27, owed 22.5M over the next 3 years, and has established himself as a 800-850 OPS guy over the last several years. That represents a decent upgrade over what we got last year at 2B. I’m not ready to make any comparisons to our performance at 2B this year because I don’t know how much of Barmes’ resurgence is legit.
Anyway, I thought I’d throw it out there – if we decide to spend some money and ink Atkins, a Stewart + prospect/s for Phillips seems reasonable.
If Barmes goes back to struggling and we continue to surge, 2B seems like a top priority for a playoff push.

It's a good idea,
Phillips is a class of athlete that would be hard to take a pass on. He’s definitely one of my favorite parts of watching Reds games, and that was before I came here. As with any trade, I would think it would come down to not giving up too much, but he’d be worth quite a bit. I’m going to say that people are still overplaying Atkins’ value, but I’d be willing to give up Stewart for Phillips anyway and take the decline phase with Garrett.
I have one caveat and that would be for the club to also go out on a monetary limb for Chris Dominguez as a higher potential Atkins heir than Holcomb.

Stewart would be a nice pick up for them, too. I can’t even think of who their 3B is, which usually isn’t a good sign. (Just looked it up Ed Encarnacion is. And he sucks).
