Kansas City is just one of those teams that it's really easy for me to not like. Like some 80's hair band perpetually trying to recapture glory that will never come back, with the added pathology of never realizing that weird kick they have for wearing spandex on stage just isn't normal, the Royals try to act like they're still a relevant and meaningful player in the MLB by making all the big off season free agent signings and laying out all the big draft bonuses that many fans seem to think equals winning baseball, but the end result of all that hairspray and noise still sits perennially at the bottom of the AL Central standings. Additionally, they spawned Clint Hurdle and they use the DH. What exactly is there to like about them?

It's no wonder then, that the Rockies are slowly eroding the support of former Royals fans across the great plains, as we're obviously just a much more likable team that actually has won something since the time grunge music killed the hair bands.

Go Rockies!

Unfortunately

I have to settle for following this game on Yahoo at work rather than my normal Monday ritual of watching at home with beers.

Someone out there want to consume a few Miller Chills on my behalf?

Guh

Not even if I were to find them (as I did my first and only time trying them) for $2.98 for a sixer at the Winco Foods. Terrible.

My money is on the Bulldogs in this one.

He might be allowed on Jeff Baker's new planet.

Why couldn’t any of our pitchers do that against the Mets lesser pitchers?

by Rox Girl on Jun 23, 2008 5:33 PM MDT up reply actions

Honestly I've watched a fair bit of Santana's starts this season

and he has been sort of meh…not the world dominator I was expecting coming over from the American League to the AAAA National League.

Also Felix may or may not get hit later in the game for his circa 45 second home run trot

Jeff Baker was named player of the week,

which is insulting because it equates Jeff Baker with other MLB players. Jeff Baker will now form another planet where this sort of travesty won’t occur.

by Rox Girl on Jun 23, 2008 5:32 PM MDT reply actions

Congrats to Jeff, he deserved it

I guess it’s lucky that we’re on the road in AL parks for the next week so Bake can stay in the lineup while Barmes is worked back into the mix as well.

Rumor has it

That MLB is changing the name of the award to the Baker Award. They will also change the MVP, Cy Young, ROY, Manager of the Year to Baker Awards as well.

Soon to follow: Emmy’s, Pulitzer and Oscars. But not the Grammy’s. Baker freaking HATES pop music.

Barmes

by rosenthal on Jun 23, 2008 6:47 PM MDT reply actions

Dude

That was his first at bat back after the injury. I’m willing to give him more than that before I pronounce judgment.

by holly96 on Jun 23, 2008 6:50 PM MDT up reply actions

I think

the fact that he sucked for most of his career is enough for me to make that judgment.

He’s had two good months and about a dozen awful months. I’ll take the dozen, thankyouverymuch.

by rosenthal on Jun 23, 2008 6:50 PM MDT up reply actions

Well

okay, if that was already your judgment. I thought you were using that one at bat to make a determination.

by holly96 on Jun 23, 2008 6:52 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't

make a lot of judgments unless I see the guy hit. Perhaps tomorrow I’ll come to the conclusion that he officially sucks again.

by rosenthal on Jun 23, 2008 6:54 PM MDT up reply actions

You can have them...

And all sales are final so don’t think you can bring those dozen awful months back.

by rosenthal on Jun 23, 2008 6:53 PM MDT up reply actions

If O'Dowd had any sense (which he doesn't)

He’d trade Barmes now, while he still has some actual (perceived) value around the league. His average is going to drop about 100 points in the next two weeks, guaranteed.

by Ghoulowitzki on Jun 23, 2008 6:59 PM MDT up reply actions

I think it's funny he has a Skyline Chili logo on the banner

Obviously a leftover from his Cincy period, but Cincinnati chili is something I’ve found to be highly overrated.

by Rox Girl on Jun 23, 2008 7:06 PM MDT up reply actions

Kind of

wondered what the hell that is. Never been to Cincy. Though, I am planning a mini-road trip in August to various minor league ballparks. Think I’ll hit Louisville in an attempt to see the Bats.

by rosenthal on Jun 23, 2008 7:08 PM MDT up reply actions

It's a chili with cinnamon and beef that's put on top of spaghetti

Apparently an Eastern European restaurateur invented when someone ordered spaghetti and he didn’t know what it was. It can be ordered as a three-way (chili, cheese, spaghetti) four-way (plus beans or onions) or five way (plus both beans and onions) and none of the varieties have appealed to me yet. It’s similar to pastitsio, a greek pasta dish with lamb and cinnamon that’s one of my favorite comfort foods, so I think why I don’t like the chili version is because the comparison makes it fall well off the mark.

by Rox Girl on Jun 23, 2008 7:21 PM MDT up reply actions

A google search

told me it was like the chili they use on Coney Islands. Now THAT’S good food. So good, in fact, that when applying for my most recent job, I had an offer in Michigan. One of the reasons I turned it down (aside from the fact that Michigan freaking sucks) was the fear of eating at a Coney Island too often and gaining weight.

If that’s what Cincinnati chili is….. Holy god.

by rosenthal on Jun 23, 2008 7:26 PM MDT up reply actions

That's of the fast food variety

so it’s hardly a surprise. Speaking of Cinci and Skyline Chili, the GABP is one of the more underrated new ballparks. It’s got a very nice ambiance to it, and compared to the other new park I’ve been top, Busch Stadium, I’d rate it higher in terms of overall experience and atmosphere.

Pretty close...

If the Lobos got an automatic bid by winning as the #3 or #4 seed in their conference tourney. It’s just an unprecedented run, particularly considering the two loss elimination format should weed out a lot of the randomness.

by Rox Girl on Jun 23, 2008 8:07 PM MDT up reply actions

Feel bad

for them. They aren’t as good, certainly, but they had this game won. If they win today it’s still likely that they lose (UGA is that much better), but at least they can go balls out and try to win Game 2 and end it early.

As it stands, I like UGA to sweep. It’ll be all the more sweet if they win tomorrow because I’m off and won’t have to deal with the hassle of a late UGA championship. :)

by rockhead on Jun 23, 2008 8:25 PM MDT reply actions

Because

Kiszla doesn’t make the lineup cards, I’d assume.

by rosenthal on Jun 23, 2008 8:29 PM MDT up reply actions

Which is a good thing

Since Kiz knows less about baseball that I do.

Blame the Red Sox!

by rockhead on Jun 23, 2008 8:30 PM MDT up reply actions

Which still may be more than our current manager...

Plus it means we’d have to read less of his stuff, which might be a good thing. I think I’m for this hire.

by Rox Girl on Jun 23, 2008 8:34 PM MDT up reply actions

No go

As Kiz is no longer allowed in the locker room. Plus he’s always reactive rather presenting an idea proactively.

Blame the Red Sox!

Hey Look

It’s Sophomore Slump Tulo™! Now with rally-killing action!

Pull his hamstring..

and watch him fail!!

Welcome back Tulo!!

Haha!

Nice.

Also, it super-scripted my tm automatically. crazy.

by Yokel on Jun 23, 2008 8:34 PM MDT up reply actions

Is Tulo really ready?

I’ve got this on XM & the KC radio guys don’t seem to think so.

They said he’d had a “tough night at the plate and in the field.”

They could’ve said “tough year” & been equally correct.

Dude

needs to do some roids. That’ll really help his game.

Someone give Tulo some HGH.

by rosenthal on Jun 23, 2008 8:33 PM MDT up reply actions

I miss Q already

At the moment, .271 and great defense at SS would be welcome.

Its nights like tonight when I think that

this team is a lot further from contention than anyone here believes. Our pitching is just not good enough, and the bulk of our offense is either at the peak or downside of their careers.

and the Snakes just beat Boston, 2-1

2 on, 2 out in bottom of the 9th, Manny Ramirez fouls off 5 pitches & then hits a bullet right at Reynolds for the 3rd out.

Not a good night, for sure. 8 games out.

make that the bottom of the 8th

Sox went 1-2-3 in the 9th

I'm not sure how one night can really tell somebody much of anything....

It’s just one fifth of the rotation you’re talking about, and the offense has had enough chances tonight that could have just as easily gone our way. The peak or downside argument centers around Atkins/Holliday/Hawpe/Helton, but we have just as many position players that are still rising to their peaks. I just think one night is too small a picture to look at to really make any sort of future prognosis.

by Rox Girl on Jun 23, 2008 8:42 PM MDT up reply actions

Ok...so maybe tonight is too small a sample

But we are 12 games below 500.

I will find the time to write a fanpost on the subject.

Oh, believe me, I know that 12 below = bad team

Regardless of how far behind Arizona we are and I wrote as much in one of the Mets Q and A’s this weekend. We can’t be serious unless we do some major closing of that deficit before the All-Star break.

Memo to O'Dowd

Giving multi year contracts to relievers coming off their career high in innings pitched….not so smart .

Statisticians

now call it the Baker Deviation. Jeff Baker is the standard.

by rosenthal on Jun 23, 2008 8:48 PM MDT up reply actions

Baker is the mean..

And by that I don’t “mean” average.

Welcome back Tulo!!

Ramirez to close it out....

Just think of what we could have gotten in return if we had traded Corpas instead of Ramirez before the season started.

Hey look Ramon Ramirez

what a bum.
