Game #77: Francis vs Bannister
Colorado Rockies at Kansas City Royals, Jun 23, 2008 6:10 PM MDT
Kansas City is just one of those teams that it's really easy for me to not like. Like some 80's hair band perpetually trying to recapture glory that will never come back, with the added pathology of never realizing that weird kick they have for wearing spandex on stage just isn't normal, the Royals try to act like they're still a relevant and meaningful player in the MLB by making all the big off season free agent signings and laying out all the big draft bonuses that many fans seem to think equals winning baseball, but the end result of all that hairspray and noise still sits perennially at the bottom of the AL Central standings. Additionally, they spawned Clint Hurdle and they use the DH. What exactly is there to like about them?
It's no wonder then, that the Rockies are slowly eroding the support of former Royals fans across the great plains, as we're obviously just a much more likable team that actually has won something since the time grunge music killed the hair bands.
Go Rockies!

Unfortunately
I have to settle for following this game on Yahoo at work rather than my normal Monday ritual of watching at home with beers.
Someone out there want to consume a few Miller Chills on my behalf?
Guh
Not even if I were to find them (as I did my first and only time trying them) for $2.98 for a sixer at the Winco Foods. Terrible.
Bite your tongue
It’s a great beer when it’s really * hot outside.
Additionally
The UGA game is on ESPN2.
My money is on the Bulldogs in this one.
King Felix just hit a grand slam against Santana
The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season
He might be allowed on Jeff Baker's new planet.
Why couldn’t any of our pitchers do that against the Mets lesser pitchers?
Honestly I've watched a fair bit of Santana's starts this season
and he has been sort of meh…not the world dominator I was expecting coming over from the American League to the AAAA National League.
Also Felix may or may not get hit later in the game for his circa 45 second home run trot
The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season
Jeff Baker was named player of the week,
which is insulting because it equates Jeff Baker with other MLB players. Jeff Baker will now form another planet where this sort of travesty won’t occur.
Congrats to Jeff, he deserved it
I guess it’s lucky that we’re on the road in AL parks for the next week so Bake can stay in the lineup while Barmes is worked back into the mix as well.

Rumor has it
That MLB is changing the name of the award to the Baker Award. They will also change the MVP, Cy Young, ROY, Manager of the Year to Baker Awards as well.
Soon to follow: Emmy’s, Pulitzer and Oscars. But not the Grammy’s. Baker freaking HATES pop music.
Man,
the strike zone is already wide on Helton tonight!!
yea that 2nd strike wasnt even close
this team is utter rubbish...

Good thing
we brought a pitcher with AAA stuff tonight.
Just got home.
How’d the Royals get the run?

86 mph fastball right down the middle to Mark Teahan
You know, I’m really surprised that strategy didn’t work.
Wow
Well, thanks to Jeff for saving me some time tonight. I can get some work done and hit the gym. Adios.
Oh good god
Do I ever hate the Royals. But I’m actually not that surprised, since my prediction for this series was absolute pain.
We are all dead.
Instead
I suggest watching our kids, Erik Wetzel and Ryan Peisel, on ESPN2, in the Bulldog v. Bulldog showdown. Peisel in particular has looked good.
We are all dead.
Promising start.
With no outs, I’d like to say that scoring at least one run is possible, but . . .

Isn't
Bannister’s whole thing, “no walks, no strikeouts lots of contact”?
A superior education can only carry you so far...
You’ve got to put that theoretical stuff into practice in the real world.
All I know is that he went to a damn fine institution for college
Became a Met, and then became a Royal.
n/t
What college? Or is that a hint that it was USC?
Figured it out
what with the “fight on” reference.
Then I wikipediad him. According to W, he has dabbled in Wiccan beliefs. So, um, he’s got that going for him.
If I had this
game thread tonight, there would have beeen a “Fight on!” in there somewhere.

yeah, Barmes
it a GB back to pitcher.. It went 1-2-3 inning ending double play.
Argh
I was afraid of the DP, so in the back of my mind I was hoping for a strikeout so at least we’d have another chance. Didn’t work.
Dude
That was his first at bat back after the injury. I’m willing to give him more than that before I pronounce judgment.
I think
the fact that he sucked for most of his career is enough for me to make that judgment.
He’s had two good months and about a dozen awful months. I’ll take the dozen, thankyouverymuch.
Well
okay, if that was already your judgment. I thought you were using that one at bat to make a determination.
You can have them...
And all sales are final so don’t think you can bring those dozen awful months back.
I suspect
Barmes will be bringing more to stock the shelves of Fail R Us for the next few years.
If O'Dowd had any sense (which he doesn't)
He’d trade Barmes now, while he still has some actual (perceived) value around the league. His average is going to drop about 100 points in the next two weeks, guaranteed.

I suspect
that if I, a lowly, bitter man in Georgia, realizes that Barmes sucks, most baseball executives realize it, too.
I suppose
there are a few retarded GMs out there.
Unfortunately
He’s a dying breed. Teams are hiring intelligent human beings to run organizations and firing the dumb ones.
*Unless you’re the Monforts. In that case, you are actually just retarded yourself. And we all know retards can’t point out other retards. Seriously…. The Monforts are a stupid family. All of them. Dick named his kid Sterling.. AFTER STERLING SHARPE.
I'm optimistic
Everyday I get a little more desperate. And desperation yields the quickest results.
Great
I’m looking forward to making Bannister look like a Cy Young candidate tonight

nice to see the return of tulo

FAIL!
I have just about had enough of our sudden and total inability to hit worth crap. Bannister AL Cy Young, here we come (we already submitted Pelfrey’s name for NL Cy yesterday).
We are all dead.
OT
Since we’re in KC, I th ink it’s appropriate to point out that you all should check out Joe Posnanski’s blog. He’s the best sportswriter out there (Rick Reilly: Eat shit), and is an absolute treat to read.
I think it's funny he has a Skyline Chili logo on the banner
Obviously a leftover from his Cincy period, but Cincinnati chili is something I’ve found to be highly overrated.
Kind of
wondered what the hell that is. Never been to Cincy. Though, I am planning a mini-road trip in August to various minor league ballparks. Think I’ll hit Louisville in an attempt to see the Bats.
It's a chili with cinnamon and beef that's put on top of spaghetti
Apparently an Eastern European restaurateur invented when someone ordered spaghetti and he didn’t know what it was. It can be ordered as a three-way (chili, cheese, spaghetti) four-way (plus beans or onions) or five way (plus both beans and onions) and none of the varieties have appealed to me yet. It’s similar to pastitsio, a greek pasta dish with lamb and cinnamon that’s one of my favorite comfort foods, so I think why I don’t like the chili version is because the comparison makes it fall well off the mark.
A google search
told me it was like the chili they use on Coney Islands. Now THAT’S good food. So good, in fact, that when applying for my most recent job, I had an offer in Michigan. One of the reasons I turned it down (aside from the fact that Michigan freaking sucks) was the fear of eating at a Coney Island too often and gaining weight.
If that’s what Cincinnati chili is….. Holy god.
That's of the fast food variety
so it’s hardly a surprise. Speaking of Cinci and Skyline Chili, the GABP is one of the more underrated new ballparks. It’s got a very nice ambiance to it, and compared to the other new park I’ve been top, Busch Stadium, I’d rate it higher in terms of overall experience and atmosphere.
I do have to say
that if we didn’t expect this against the Royals, we were delusional. We know how evil they are and how skilled at causing agony.
We are all dead.
Okay
I really have had enough of this. I love it when Francis throw 85-mph fastballs down the middle.
We are all dead.
Yippee!

Overall
this isn’t too surprising. This team has terrible road numbers, in terms of both individual hitting numbers and won-loss record.
This week may be the nail in the coffin (for most, I went ahead and played the odds and hammered mine in a few weeks ago).
I thought I was going to,
If we were in any other division in baseball the coffin would be long nailed shut, but our rivals are just as bad as we are, so I just can’t do it yet. This road trip could o the trick though, if it turns out too badly.
So are we contending yet?
this team is pathetic.
Check that….this Rockies Organization is pathetic…..No pressure of expectations….gets you this crap

I was going to say
It couldn’t be worse, but then realized that it actually could be. Sigh.
Blame the Red Sox!
Long reliever..
I think the loss of Kip Wells has contributed to Hurdle leaving his starters in for too long. He just doesn’t have a long relief pitcher to rely on right now.
Welcome back Tulo!!
Give the runs right back, why don't you?

Agreed
Fresno just isn’t as good as Georgia, top to bottom.
I’m praying this sonofabitch doesn’t go into extra innings.
The same could be said of every team Fresno's eliminated this tournament,
It’s just amazing that they’ve even made it this far.
I've likened it to
Someone like New Mexico making it to the Final Four. Accurate?
Pretty close...
If the Lobos got an automatic bid by winning as the #3 or #4 seed in their conference tourney. It’s just an unprecedented run, particularly considering the two loss elimination format should weed out a lot of the randomness.
Feel bad
for them. They aren’t as good, certainly, but they had this game won. If they win today it’s still likely that they lose (UGA is that much better), but at least they can go balls out and try to win Game 2 and end it early.
As it stands, I like UGA to sweep. It’ll be all the more sweet if they win tomorrow because I’m off and won’t have to deal with the hassle of a late UGA championship. :)
Hey, everybody
Dirk Diggler is being interviewed by Erin Andrews!
Hey guys, just got home from work..
I thought I was going to be at work until later, but the sun sets according to Jeff Baker’s watch.
Welcome back Tulo!!
So are we now...
maybe interested in Erik Bedard? Koshansky + Hynick and maybe an outfielder or an infielder for him. Is it enough of a down market for that?
Matt Holliday must be wearing Jeff Baker underoos...
cause he’s smoking the ball right now
Welcome back Tulo!!
So, a ponderable
After all the ink given in the Post to moving Todd down in line up, why is he still batting clean-up????
Blame the Red Sox!
Because
Kiszla doesn’t make the lineup cards, I’d assume.
Which still may be more than our current manager...
Plus it means we’d have to read less of his stuff, which might be a good thing. I think I’m for this hire.
Is Tulo really ready?
I’ve got this on XM & the KC radio guys don’t seem to think so.
They said he’d had a “tough night at the plate and in the field.”
They could’ve said “tough year” & been equally correct.
There is a bright side to the '08 season.
Barry Bonds & Roger Clemens are out of baseball.
Dude
needs to do some roids. That’ll really help his game.
Someone give Tulo some HGH.
I miss Q already
At the moment, .271 and great defense at SS would be welcome.
There is a bright side to the '08 season.
Barry Bonds & Roger Clemens are out of baseball.
Its nights like tonight when I think that
this team is a lot further from contention than anyone here believes. Our pitching is just not good enough, and the bulk of our offense is either at the peak or downside of their careers.
The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season
and the Snakes just beat Boston, 2-1
2 on, 2 out in bottom of the 9th, Manny Ramirez fouls off 5 pitches & then hits a bullet right at Reynolds for the 3rd out.
Not a good night, for sure. 8 games out.
There is a bright side to the '08 season.
Barry Bonds & Roger Clemens are out of baseball.
make that the bottom of the 8th
Sox went 1-2-3 in the 9th
There is a bright side to the '08 season.
Barry Bonds & Roger Clemens are out of baseball.
I'm not sure how one night can really tell somebody much of anything....
It’s just one fifth of the rotation you’re talking about, and the offense has had enough chances tonight that could have just as easily gone our way. The peak or downside argument centers around Atkins/Holliday/Hawpe/Helton, but we have just as many position players that are still rising to their peaks. I just think one night is too small a picture to look at to really make any sort of future prognosis.
Ok...so maybe tonight is too small a sample
But we are 12 games below 500.
I will find the time to write a fanpost on the subject.
The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season
Oh, believe me, I know that 12 below = bad team
Regardless of how far behind Arizona we are and I wrote as much in one of the Mets Q and A’s this weekend. We can’t be serious unless we do some major closing of that deficit before the All-Star break.
Memo to O'Dowd
Giving multi year contracts to relievers coming off their career high in innings pitched….not so smart .

now call it the Baker Deviation. Jeff Baker is the standard.

Just think of what we could have gotten in return if we had traded Corpas instead of Ramirez before the season started.
