Game #78: De La Rosa vs. Greinke

Colorado Rockies at Kansas City Royals, Jun 24, 2008 6:10 PM MDT

Oooh, Jorge De La Rosa faces his most recent former team. Will this be a case of former pitcher dominating his old team or the old team reigning supreme over the former pitcher? I'll go with the former and say this will be a felicitous victory for De La Rosa.

Go Rockies!

Congratulations on Silverblood's 10,000 posts

Since I have to work tonight I will probably end up missing most of the game. So here’s a little trophy in honor of Silver’s copious keyboard.

Welcome back Tulo!!

From the RMN's

Rockies blog:

A COUPLE Rockies players played a trick on manager Clint Hurdle and bench coach Jamie Quirk during batting practice, using tape to put up the No. 13 and No. 9 below the three numbers the Royals have retired, which are posted on the base of the scoreboard at Kauffman Stadium. The joke was on the Rockies players. Hurdle wears No. 13 now, but when he came up with the Royals he wore No. 10. That number is retired—in honor of the late Dick Hower, a former Royals manager. ``When he came over,’’ Hurdle said of Howser, ``(The clubhouse manager) told me Dick was very fond of No. 10. I was traded that winter.’‘

Actually

I don’t mind Jamie so much, actually I would like to see him get his a fair chance to manage one day…

In all honesty I have been praying that Quirk would do to Clint Hurdle what Clint did to Buddy Bell for quite some time now.

Can any one here

give me a good reason that Helton is batting clean up? Since when did good defense, and the ability to get a walk make a player a clean up hitter?

Be glad he's not close to 3,000 hits

Many Astros fans (and players) were frustrated for 2 years as management decreed that an over-the-hill Craig Biggio had to stay in the lineup to reach that goal.

The Rockies have a different issue, though. They can hardly pay Helton what he makes to sit the bench. Nor can they trade him—too expensive and fading too fast. They’re in jam. But he can’t give them what they need in the 3 or 4 spot, it doesn’t appear.

Strikeouts

This team strikes out way too often for a team that doesn’t really hit a lot of home runs. I did some quick calculations:

The 2008 Rockies strikeout 8.07 times for each home run they hit.

The 2007 Rockies struck out 6.7 times for every home run.

That’s a pretty significant difference.

By the way, the Milwaukee Brewers - who have hit 100 homers already this season - strike out only 5.46 times per big fly.

Pretty ugly

Cleanup hitter’s at .267 with no power, and 3 K’s tonight.

SS is at .152, and not looking sharp on defense, either.

I think the comment above is right. Helton needs some bench time as a signal that to play, you must perform.

Tulo, I don’t know. He has options left. He might benefit by staying in Colo. Springs until he gets hot & starts tearing up the league, instead of doing a Second Spring Training for a few weeks in the big leagues. Q was hitting .271 and playing superb defense.

Time for rewarding performance, not reputation or paycheck level.

There is a bright side to the '08 season.
Barry Bonds & Roger Clemens are out of baseball.

I'm willing....

to cut Tulo some slack. he’s still pretty much fresh off the DL.

Todd, however, needs to be batting 7th. Or sitting.

The first might happen. The second won’t.

Q is fool's gold

that .271 average is backed with absolutely nothing, not OBP not power, nothing. He’s really a lesser Aaron Miles offensively.

Tulo’s without a doubt had his struggles this year, but he needs to work them out here. That’s part of his maturation as a player. He’s the leader of this team and will be more so as guys are moved out that aren’t or don’t want to be a part of the future. Part of his growth as a player will be learning how to handle personal adversity without having it affect his role as the point man on the team.

We aren’t going anywhere this year, haven’t been since mid May, so this is a good year to let these guys work through slumps at the big league level.

Tulo will be back, the heart of his struggles is a .180 BABIP so he’s getting zero breaks, and he’s putting more balls in play than he did last year. He’ll need to improve the quality of his contact, but that will come, and the cheapies will help the most in geting confidence back. His RZR is still extremely high, so defensive concerns are grossly overstated and likely come from those focusing too much on offense and deflecting it on defense (reverse Gold Glove effect).

Helton… I’ve made my thoughts known for the last two years… They haven’t changed.

I agree..

Q will never be better than a utility player. He probably wouldn’t even displace Neifi Perez.

Welcome back Tulo!!

And to think....

this team suckered me into scoreboard watching for a week or so.
