Game #78: De La Rosa vs. Greinke
Colorado Rockies at Kansas City Royals, Jun 24, 2008 6:10 PM MDT
Oooh, Jorge De La Rosa faces his most recent former team. Will this be a case of former pitcher dominating his old team or the old team reigning supreme over the former pitcher? I'll go with the former and say this will be a felicitous victory for De La Rosa.
Go Rockies!

Congratulations on Silverblood's 10,000 posts

Since I have to work tonight I will probably end up missing most of the game. So here’s a little trophy in honor of Silver’s copious keyboard.
Welcome back Tulo!!
From the RMN's
A COUPLE Rockies players played a trick on manager Clint Hurdle and bench coach Jamie Quirk during batting practice, using tape to put up the No. 13 and No. 9 below the three numbers the Royals have retired, which are posted on the base of the scoreboard at Kauffman Stadium. The joke was on the Rockies players. Hurdle wears No. 13 now, but when he came up with the Royals he wore No. 10. That number is retired—in honor of the late Dick Hower, a former Royals manager. ``When he came over,’’ Hurdle said of Howser, ``(The clubhouse manager) told me Dick was very fond of No. 10. I was traded that winter.’‘

Can we just leave Clint and Jamie in KC?
They seem to be enjoying themselves
The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season
Actually
I don’t mind Jamie so much, actually I would like to see him get his a fair chance to manage one day…
In all honesty I have been praying that Quirk would do to Clint Hurdle what Clint did to Buddy Bell for quite some time now.
How long will Helton keeping batting fourth?
There seems to be no end in sight.
Can any one here
give me a good reason that Helton is batting clean up? Since when did good defense, and the ability to get a walk make a player a clean up hitter?
Colorado Rockies: Continuing a long tradition of playing meaningless games in June!
In
what may turn out to be a better game to watch, Georgia is up 3-0 in the first over Fresno State. Ryan Peisel started the game with a single.

Glad to see
that Spilly is started… I wonder if Hurdle has had enough of Willy T and his lack of Hustle, and non-lack of complaining.
The good the bad and the ugly
The Good: Spils over willy!
The Bad: Yorvit over Iannetta
The Ugly: The reaction of the very nice lady sitting next to me in sec 103 last night to the news of Jorge de la Rosa would be pitching tonight, “Oh my, he’s terrible“
The Royals
have been an offensive juggernaut in June. Fear. . . .

No surprise here...

JDLR Ks
I think we should all make guesses of how may strikeouts JDLR will register tonight. Winner gets a cookie. Or not.
I’m going with 7.
Gordon goes down looking.
Two Ks for JDLR after one.

Do you think
We’re rushing players to get them back in the lineup? Tulo hasn’t really looked good since his return, and Barmes now… I don’t know… just wondering what your thoughts are?
Blame the Red Sox!
But Tulo
didn’t look good before his injury. As for Barmes, it’s only his second game back.

Georgia's Dodson knocked out...
by Erik Wetzel’s single. They may be teammates next week, but not tonight. Dodson came in with 5-3 lead, departs with 9-6 deficit. He retired only two batters.

“ready to make a run”

Seriously. It's good to know we're all committed 100% to this Strasburg derby
Oh wait, that’s not the direction they were talking about running, was it…
And Seattle just shut out the Mets, 11-0...
behind knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, who was Tennessee’s stud pitcher (and first-round pick) during the Helton era.
Can we exchange
our runs with Fresno State’s?

It's bad when Boston winning is the hilight..
of your baseball day as a Rockies fan. The on/off offense I can take (don’t like it, but it happens), the on/off defense…not so much At least there is always the shot at love with tila tequila reunion on tonight also…

Bad Rockies baseball is very much vomit inducing. Tila Tequila is just some quality esacape time.

is watching Gossip Girl on Monday nights. Should I have admitted that?

Perhaps...
however more passion should be shown from the players on this team than Tila’s castoffs. You would think they would not want to be continually beaten by the Royals. At least there was finally some bad defense by the Royals instead of us.

This series is turning me into a big royals hater
building on last year. The announcers are annoying. The stadium is minor league. Their players are remarkably nondescript.

So,
does this mean the “Rockies on the verge of competing/Matt Holliday off the table” articles can go away and we can get back to being realistic?
Yeah
unfortunately I think most other GMs are aware of his home/road skew and aren’t going to offer what we want
The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season
It's not so much home/ road
as it is 10 hrs and 38 rbi from a guy who’s going to ask for, what, $20 mil a year? His production is mediocre at best. For that money, I expect Manny Ramirez-like numbers year in year out. If he’s not the guy to give you that, move him along and let’s use our $$ elsewhere
Todd really failed tonight.

Todd & Tulo are not helping this team
It’s hard to bench either of them, but the team’s going nowhere with them playing this way.
There is a bright side to the '08 season.
Barry Bonds & Roger Clemens are out of baseball.
Bench Helton.....
He has stunk for weeks. Send a message to the whole team that no one is unaccountable for horrid play. Then, when Helton is back in the starting lineup, bat him 8th. Let him earn his way back up in the order.
Just fed up with Todd.
Be glad he's not close to 3,000 hits
Many Astros fans (and players) were frustrated for 2 years as management decreed that an over-the-hill Craig Biggio had to stay in the lineup to reach that goal.
The Rockies have a different issue, though. They can hardly pay Helton what he makes to sit the bench. Nor can they trade him—too expensive and fading too fast. They’re in jam. But he can’t give them what they need in the 3 or 4 spot, it doesn’t appear.
There is a bright side to the '08 season.
Barry Bonds & Roger Clemens are out of baseball.
Todd
never really bounced back from that illness a couple years back. Seeing him take all those called third strikes this year has made me feel like it might be almost over.
Meanwhile, Koshansky already has 74 RBI down in AAA, but has no chance in hell to start here.
He seems like a AAAA player to me
I’d rather try Atkins or Baker at first

that JoKo would be better at 1st than Todd

The Rockies
have struck out 13 times through eight innings. After nine, they will have struck out how many times?
"Keep your head down, and inch toward daylight." - Blade of Tyshalle
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Strikeouts
This team strikes out way too often for a team that doesn’t really hit a lot of home runs. I did some quick calculations:
The 2008 Rockies strikeout 8.07 times for each home run they hit.
The 2007 Rockies struck out 6.7 times for every home run.
That’s a pretty significant difference.
By the way, the Milwaukee Brewers - who have hit 100 homers already this season - strike out only 5.46 times per big fly.
Does Rami
have something against Torrealba?

Pretty ugly
Cleanup hitter’s at .267 with no power, and 3 K’s tonight.
SS is at .152, and not looking sharp on defense, either.
I think the comment above is right. Helton needs some bench time as a signal that to play, you must perform.
Tulo, I don’t know. He has options left. He might benefit by staying in Colo. Springs until he gets hot & starts tearing up the league, instead of doing a Second Spring Training for a few weeks in the big leagues. Q was hitting .271 and playing superb defense.
Time for rewarding performance, not reputation or paycheck level.
There is a bright side to the '08 season.
Barry Bonds & Roger Clemens are out of baseball.
I'm willing....
to cut Tulo some slack. he’s still pretty much fresh off the DL.
Todd, however, needs to be batting 7th. Or sitting.
The first might happen. The second won’t.
by BroJB on Jun 24, 2008 9:19 PM MDT up reply actions 1 recs
Q is fool's gold
that .271 average is backed with absolutely nothing, not OBP not power, nothing. He’s really a lesser Aaron Miles offensively.
Tulo’s without a doubt had his struggles this year, but he needs to work them out here. That’s part of his maturation as a player. He’s the leader of this team and will be more so as guys are moved out that aren’t or don’t want to be a part of the future. Part of his growth as a player will be learning how to handle personal adversity without having it affect his role as the point man on the team.
We aren’t going anywhere this year, haven’t been since mid May, so this is a good year to let these guys work through slumps at the big league level.
Tulo will be back, the heart of his struggles is a .180 BABIP so he’s getting zero breaks, and he’s putting more balls in play than he did last year. He’ll need to improve the quality of his contact, but that will come, and the cheapies will help the most in geting confidence back. His RZR is still extremely high, so defensive concerns are grossly overstated and likely come from those focusing too much on offense and deflecting it on defense (reverse Gold Glove effect).
Helton… I’ve made my thoughts known for the last two years… They haven’t changed.
