Game #60: Cook vs Kershaw
Colorado Rockies at Los Angeles Dodgers, Jun 4, 2008 1:10 PM MDT
You know what I'd really like to see today? I want to see Kershaw walk something like twelve Rockies, leave a few meatballs up in the zone and have Dodger fans scratching their heads after today and wondering who ultimately gets held accountable for the failure to draw the performance that matches the talent out of their pitching prospects. I want them to feel some of my pain, in other words. I can tell you what I don't want to see today, too. I don't want to see our free swinging club make the wild child look like Christy Mathewson, I don't want to hear whiny voices saying "no more excuses" after the game like it's another excuse that gives them a free pass until tomorrow and I absolutely, positively don't want to see something like what happened the last time Aaron Cook started. Fair enough?
Go Rockies.

I've seen this a lot around here...
Everyone keeps talking about this “win”, and I’m just wondering what that’s all about. See, I didn’t think that was permissible. But, you know, we’re a no excuses ballclub, so we’ll just get back out there and do what we can.
www.notthisday.com ....coming September 26th and 27th at the Pinnacle Event Center, Denver.
Allright...a favorable pitching matchup for once

Pitching Matchup
I think a lot of Aaron Cook and really admire his pitching…..............but don’t sell this Kershaw kid short. He may have had some jitters in New York, but in his debut in LA he was beyond impressive. Two years ago this time he was getting drafted out of high school….........................the Dodgers didn’t hesitate to move their prospect along quickly and he has always answered the promotion call. All the talk in LA is that he is the real deal…...............now.
Not saying he's not going to be the real deal
but its his third major league start. We used to have the kind of lineup that would give a rookie pitcher trouble.

Just got back from McDonalds...
I promised my daughter we would eat there today, hopefully tomorrow we can eat at Taco Bell.

My ideal lineup when everyone is healthy...
Spilly – CF
Smith – RF
Helton – 1B
Holliday – LF
Tulo – SS
Stewart – 3B (after an Atkins trade)
Iannetta – C
Barmes – 2B

Through 2..
Kershaw – 53 pitches, 4 K’s
Cook – 30 pitches and 1 twin killing
Somebody stole my Rocktober!!
Rockies On Base leaders:
Helton .421
Spilly .414
Holliday .407
Barmes .376
Hawpe .349
Iannetta .347
Stewart .343
Atkins .332
Pods .326
WillyT .303
Is it bad when the starting leadoff hitter is tenth on the team in OnBase% ?
Somebody stole my Rocktober!!
Maybe Spilly should lead off
he might be the best on the team at working counts
The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season
Spilly should be starting once everyone is healthy..
He’s 2nd in OBP, 3rd in Avg, 4th in Slg

I've thought this
pretty much since September last year.
If you go by RZR the top defensive outfielders this year are...
Holliday at LF – .944
Spilly at CF – 1.000
Smith at RF – .941

Wow! No soup for Juan Pierre today.
Chris Iannetta can play defense? Where did that gun come from?
Somebody stole my Rocktober!!
I'm glad he's not starting
that arm is dangerous

Iannetta's laser
Just saw the highlight of Iannetta nailing Juan Pierre trying to steal second base in the bottom of the third…what a perfect peg! Even drew a “wow” from Vin Scully on the TV call.
Well, at least we came pretty close to doing what I asked
Against Kershaw, I probably should have been more specific about all the runs I was wanting us to score, but the team has been much more patient at the plate than normal today and at least Baker got the one meatball pitch.
His K:BB ratio is up a little this year
1.65 k’s to bb’s, compared to 1.22 for his career before 2008.

Nice turn by herrera!!
I gotta give Atkins props, he’s good at starting a double play.
Somebody stole my Rocktober!!
is he still on that same
$200 million deal or whatever it was?

1st Dodger shorstop to get a hit since 5/24?
They were 0-36 before that? That’s Tulo territory.

I guess Jon Weisman was off a little
In that lnk to Dodger Thoughts this morning, he said they hadn’t had a hit since the Coolidge administration.
I feel like this game has been going
and yet we are only up by one run. Offense?

This is destined to be
another frustrating loss.
Is Cook going to hit in this inning?

Yorvit vs Iannetta when catching Uball
I still don’t understand why Iannetta is sitting while Yorvit starts most of the games. I looked at the stats when both players catch for Uball this year, and Iannetta’s numbers show that Uball is much better when Chris is catching.
Here’s a breakdown of their defensive stats on average:
Catcher…..Games…....PassBalls/Wild Pitches…..Runs scored
Torrealba …8 …....................1.13….............................4.25
Iannetta…....4….....................0.50….............................2.25

Herrara
is definitely not ready for the bigs
The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season
yes unfortunately
Hurdle is so benching his ass…3 walks? 0-1?
The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season
So
we didn’t run on Pierre’s arm, eh? I know it was Cook and all, but that seems insane to me.
No knock on Spilly
But timid baseball is not the way to turn this around. And without question, relying on a hit with RISP is a fool’s plan.
Cook vs Martin?
I just don’t think the Pitcher is who you want to take on the Catcher for an extra run, when a good hitter is waiting on deck.
Somebody stole my Rocktober!!
losing our one good starter on a baserunning injury
Isn’t the way to turn it around, either. If it was anybody besides Cook, I’d agree with you though.
I wish
it mattered more. Instead, it just demonstrates that this is by far the weakest division in baseball. One sort of good team, one decent team, and three doormats.
I think we have a run in us at some point
but the hole is way to deep to seriously contemplate challenging for the division.

A run to respectability
is really all I’m hoping for.
Dbacks have also played about 10 more home games than we have

While we were shopping
for washed up pitchers, why didn’t we think about Chan Ho here?
i don't think so
our teams in first place he goes no where
it's just wrong

Your team was trying to give him away last year
Franklin Morales looks like a good trade at this point

could use another Iannetta bomb here

Suprised to see Cook in with 110 pitches thrown
Herges is warming up, I think.

Its not like the setup closer combo
has been overworked of late

Bottom of the Dodgers lineup is pretty terrible
The strategy worked until the PH, there. Hurdle doesn’t have a lot of confidence in the pen right now.
Our next three hitters don't look that tough either..
Sullivan .182
Quintanilla .236
PH

I'm hoping
for some counterintuition. Maybe a 1-run lead will prove easier to hold than an 8-run lead? Yeah.
First series win
in far far too long. Nice to see the pitching win us some games. Now comes the “between Cook starts” adventure.
Woot!
We actually took a series at Dodger Stadium. That makes me feel a little better about the otherwise miserable road trip.
Yea!
I’ve been lurking while stuck here at work. Boss left just in time for me to follow the last inning on Yahoo. Huzzahs for winning a series! Finally.
Blame the Red Sox!
Baker's last 5 games
I’ve been as down on Jeff Baker in recent weeks as Rox Girl, but over his last 5 games during this road trip…5 for 11 (.455) 4 runs,,3 RBI…HR today won the game for the Rockies, and his 4 doubles should have won the game in Chicago. Just an aberration or will Baker ever be able to hit consistently with some decent power in the the big leagues?
I hope so...
I really don’t want to be down on anybody, but if they’re hurting the team as much as Baker was before this week, somebody’s got to say something, because the papers or the manager won’t. At any rate, if Baker is finally showing something of what his bat’s capable of, then I’ll happily jump on board. At the very least this past week is putting to rest his strange and awful split against left-handers this year, and showing he could be a useful counterpunch to LOOGY’s once again.
