Draft Day Open Thread #1
Odorizzi? Perry? Melville? Hewitt?
The anticipation builds as the first round is set to get under way. Odorizzi's getting some late buzz, he might not be available to the Rockies after all.

Each team has five minutes to pick, correct?
So the Rockies should be making their pick at 2:05 MT at the latest?
I wish
this was held in New York City. I’d be there in a minute.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Absolutely,
I’ll believe it when I see it, but if we pass on him and he’s available, it better be for somebody really special.
I think the two high schoolers
Odorizzi and Hewitt, would be the only guys you could justify (assuming somebody doesn’t just plummet alongside Melville).
I doubt we go over slot
Spending $3 million on Luis Vizcaino might be the money that keeps us from being able to sign Melville. Real smart, O’Dud.
Rays
fan feeling a bit confident with that “1st pick this year, 30th pick next year” sign.

Nothing
like a little winning to do that.

Gammons
just said this draft is different: “Some teams will have a guy rated in the first round, while others will have him in the third round.” That’s just not true. You read those comments every year.

I didn't come close to finishing my draft preview
but “unheralded” college guys I like, regardless of whether the Rockies draft them or not:
Conor Gillaspie- Will hit anywhere, would win a batting title at Coors
Zach Putnam- love big sinkers
Cody Satterwhite- IF it clicks, he reminds me of Matt Clement
Aaron Shafer- Another sinker guy (watched him dominate over the weekend)
James Darnell- Pretty good power for a post first-rounder
Brandon Crawford- not really “unheralded”
Jacob Thompson- Love the curve out of the 6’6 frame, will be underdrafted
Kyle Russell- When the buzz died down, he got white hot over last two weeks, power-wise
Russell would be an interesting bargain pick if he's available in the third round
Maybe even our second round selection. I like Crawford as that type of player, too, even if he went to the wrong school.
Coverage starts at 1, not the draft.
Pick is almost in.

Or noon or 2 depending
on where you are.

To no surprise,
the Rays select SS Tim Beckham with the first overall pick.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
It's crazy
looking to Beckham’s birth date and seeing “1990”—two years younger than me and the same year as my sister.
We are all dead.
No kidding
I’m in the same boat. He’s two years younger than me and just 5 months older than my brother.
Every day is a Holliday!
You guys are kidding, right?
He’s six years younger than me. This may be the first time that every player in the draft is younger than me, assuming last year wasn’t.
Only difference is, your sister's not signing
a multi-million dollar contract with Columbia in the near future.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Nope
But since I’m just getting to the point where I’m older than the kids in the draft, it’s weird (and makes me wonder what I’m doing with my life, heh).
We are all dead.
Pirates
take 3B Pedro Alvarez.Good pick.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
I saw him up close
at a ballgame a few weeks ago, and I have to say… 6’2” may actually be an inch or two off. He looked more like 6’3” or 6’4” to me.
Pretty much.
But it goes against the usual practice of overstating a player’s size. Look at the NBA Draft combine results and see how some of the players there measured up against what they were listed at in college. Michael Beasley was listed at 6’10” in college, but he measured 6’7” without shoes at the draft combine.
Jim Callis
already looks like he needs some sleep.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
He probably does, they're up really late at BA draft eve
Making their morning of mock pretty accurate.
Royals
select 1B Eric Hosmer. Interesting to see how much he gets from the Royals.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Ah, Baltimore.
Our pal who didn’t take Chris Nelson in 2004. Make your pick.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Maybe you remember.
If the Orioles took Nelson, I believe the Rockies had it down to Diamond and Townsend. I think Diamond would have been the choice, but I can’t remember.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Baltimore
drafts LHP Brian Matusz. Yeah, I can see him dominate the Yankees in the near future.
San Francisco, please waste your pick.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
If it's Posey
I’m trying to figure out if his given name is actually, in fact, Buster. If it’s not, and the Giants pick him, I petition we immediately start referring to him as that.
I actually paid
a whole lot more attention to the NFL draft (read scouting reports, combine news, watched college games) than I did to the MLB draft, which is odd. In any case, I’m sort of flying by the seat of my pants here since I’ve never actually HEARD of these guys (which I probably should have). In short, I just want us to get somebody good. (Big surprise).
We are all dead.
We'll let you know if we're successful.
I’d start crying if they announce Andrew Cashner, TCU, though.
Could have
had him a few drafts ago.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Giants
take Gerald Posey, or Buster as he is commonly known as.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Does it make sense to draft
catchers who will probably never be stars at 5?
The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season
On the other hand...
It makes as much sense as drafting a starting pitcher who will probably never be an ace at 2. Or a college closer at 8.
Gerald....
Let’s hope he’s an overly expensive, overhyped bust, which there’s a chance of. There’s also a chance of him being the AJ pierzynski they’ve always wanted.
In big club news
Yorvit got 3 games, Kemp got 4. Nice that Kemp got hit harder for losing the fight…
Marlins
opt for high school C Kyle Skipworth.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
This is why I say Castro's long gone by our pick
There’s only one good catcher left on the board and he’s it.
Cincy's on the clock.
Will we see Gordon Beckham here?
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Reds
take Miami 1B Yonder Alonso.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Keith Law
says this is a huge surprise, since there was no connection between the two. Alonso’s asking for quite a bit to sign.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
I don't think it's that big a surprise,
The Lawrie rumors showed how much they were valuing power this season, and Alonso’s got as much of that as anybody.
The White Sox
go with SS Gordon Beckham. A favorite of mine.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
And Crow to the 'Stros after that.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Nope, Crow to the Nats
There’s definitely been a wrench or two thrown into a lot of team’s plans. I think some of it comes down to Florida taking Skipworth so early.
Nats
take Aaron Crow.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Drafted once,
why not draft him again?
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
I had forgotten that.
Some teams actually don’t like going back to draft picks that turned them down once already. Maybe Smoak does fall past Oakland.
No ESPN
Thanks for the coverage. After watching the draft on tape last year I wanted to take off this year and watch, but alas in the office and this will have to do. Forgot to even tape it this year.
Alfonso sounds like the surprise so far, but they like those big Adam Dunn type bats there.
I think we see lots of pitchers going in this area starting with Nats who pick arms, and leaving very few left for the bottom of the draft.
Also at the office
Of course, watching drafts on TV is kinda pointless. All I really need to know is who went where, not watch a bunch of guys break down the pick.
Astros
choose Stanford C Jason Castro. And there he goes.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Schlereth?
Anyone know anything about Mark Schlereth’s son? (I don’t know his name.) They’ve talked to Mark a few times on the radio shows I listen to at work, and he was just mentioned as a potential first rounder. But I don’t follow the draft, really, other than what I read here, so I’m curious about him.
Probably late,
He’s one of those guys where there’s a lot of divergence. Anywhere from around pick #18 to the sandwich round.
And his name is Daniel.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Thanks
I find it interesting that the dad was a professional athlete in one sport and his son could be a professional athlete in a different sport. That doesn’t happen very often. And I’ve always liked Mark, so I hope Daniel eventually ends up in the majors.
Schlereth
Danny Schlereth pitched against my Legion team a few years back – I had a pretty good front row seat to see him shut us out on two hits. He was at 91-93 with the fastball at that point with a big slider. I know he committed to UNLV, had TJ surgery, and is now topping out at 97 as the closer for Arizona.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
I think the catchers going fast probably surprised some people.
Now it’s a matter if pitchers or first basemen drop.
Buster
I think the Giants were real happy about having Posey fall to them and were hoping he would after some talk about him going #1 overall, but they’ve set themselves up now for a comparison with those two top catchers going back-to-back. If Skipworth outperforms him (as he easily could with arguably better tools and more power) they are going to look bad there with the better catcher going just after their pick. It’s set up for a comparison there for Giants fans anyway and some second-guessing. Castro gone now too so there goes the catchers. And only 2 first basemen gone with lots of good ones available, so one sliding does seem on track.
So far we're both right
Melville and Odorizzi still on the board, no raw toolsy high schoolers like Hicks or Lawrie have been taken, either.
The Rangers take
1B Justin Smoak. Oakland doesn’t get him.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
I wonder
Smoak dropped below a bunch of guys with better tools, but he might end up being the best hitter in this draft. I wonder if that’s going to come back to bite anyone in the ass.
A's
go with Rickie’s brother, Miami 2B Jemile Weeks.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
I've made it clear in other places that I don't think he's as good as a lot of scouts seem to think.
At #12, I definitely think the A’s might regret this decision.
Reaches
Instead of picking the top available arm when a player you wanted wasn’t there as I would expect with Houston and Oakland who could use them, they both seemed to reach for something else. Arguably both good players but ones who could just as easily have gone in the lower part of the first round normally. Texas often also goes for arms, but the big powerful 1B is a nice fit to eventually fill the spot from the last highly rated 1B that they traded away. With those developments, odds going up for a pitcher to last possibly unless there is a run on them soon—which there could be with the teams coming up.
St. Louis
selects Ariz. St. 3B Brett Wallace.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Wallace
Brett Wallace to the Cards – do they anticipate having a hole at first base sometime soon? Becuase this kid ain’t no third baseman.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
Like the Reds, they're planning on radical realignment
And that they’ll be switching to the AL where they’ll need a DH.
They seemed to have no problem
with using Chris Duncan as an outfielder when they didn’t have a hole at first base.
The problem
with using Chris Duncan as an outfielder is that Chris Duncan is a horrendous outfielder.
I would think it would be a much larger issue to contend with if your third baseman is a horrendous third baseman. See: Braun, Ryan. And at least he was a good enough athlete to move to the OF.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
The Twins
decide on OF Aaron Hicks. Only guy in attendance today.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Melville and Martin
Are currently the two top talents on my board. HS pitchers haven’t been a commodity so far.
The Dodgers
opt for 3B Ethan Martin.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Selig
announced him as a 3B.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
One of several two way players
Like Hicks, he’s got 1st round talent either way. Odorizzi’s a 1st round pitcher, 3-6th round infielder.
Now they can have a Martin
that pitches AND plays third base as well. Martin overload!
We are all dead.
As well as the one that catches and plays third base (sometimes)
They just need one to close and play 3B, and one who makes sure fans show up on time and plays 3b.
Don't forget
the Martin marshal that makes sure fans stay past the seventh…. and plays third base. And yeah, Russ Martin managed to make himself irritating when he was playing third and taking away hits.
We are all dead.
Russ Martin's just plain awful
for being named Russell.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Despite the fact that he's a Dodger
I have to admit I really like Russ(ell) Martin.
We are all dead.
Brew Crew
takes C Brett Lawrie, a Canadian.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
From British Columbia.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
I had this wild fantasy that a lot of people suddenly soured on him
So he fell to us. It wasn’t to be, though. Brewers will have five more picks between our next two, this is shaping up to be a really good draft for them already.
How did the brewers get so many picks?
I dont remember them losing a ton of marquee free agents
The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season
Geoff Jenkins?
Wow.
The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season
Yeah, go figure, huh?
I might be mistaken though. I wouldn’t think he’d be pick worthy if we couldn’t even get one for Kaz.
Guess it's too much
to ask for Christian Friedrich to fall to 25?
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Our friends to the north
grab 1B David Cooper. Time to see what the Mets do with their 1st pick in the first round.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Ike Davis is the last of the college 1B's left, right?
He’d still be a decent option if he slides to us.
Mets
take Ike Davis. Cubbies give it a go.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
So much for
the thought that a 1B with a middle of the order power bat was likely to fall…
I can’t believe so many teams are staying away from pitching this year with so few good ones available, but maybe that creates a red flag. Either the arms who haven’t been picked aren’t too good if teams are going elsewhere who could use pitching, or those teams are making mistakes.
I'm hoping the latter...
It’s shaping up that we’ll have a really nice choice at the moment among high upside RHP’s.
Why
Did the Chicago White Sox draft Mark Wahlberg from “Boogie Nights”?
Someone misinterpreted the scouting report that read, “carries big stick”.
Must not be watching ESPN
Gordon Beckham’s ridiculous hairdo and boyish looks call to mind Brock Landers himself
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
Cubs
draft RHP Andrew Cashner. Reliever goes.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Mariners
select RHP Joshua Fields. There’s another reliever.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Wow,,, people complain about our Reynolds selection,
Perhaps rightfully, but what does this selection say about the M’s Morrow selection that same year. At least we got the pitcher from the right side of the Bay, even if we didn’t get the best one in the Pac-10.
Hey, Reynolds is at least in the bigs
The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season
Wow...
he’s been pretty untouchable in relief this year
The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season
So they need another one?
Huh. Oh well, the day I understand the mind of Bavasi is the day my kids have me institutionalized, hopefully.
Senior.
Drafted in the 2nd round last year, but the Braves didn’t sign him.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Still
Doing the math, somebody born in 1985 should have been a senior in college last year, and August isn’t that late of a birthday that he would have been held back a year in school.
I know some people
born in 1985 (same year as me) who started school a year later than I did.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Well yeah
Holding kids (especially boys) back in school seems to be a common practice these days. I’m just surprised to see a guy who will be 23 in August being drafted this year.
Our pick
We’re going to get a real good pitcher, it looks like. Any shot at Friedrich or Shooter Hunt?
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
If the Padres
and Phillies pass on Friedrich . . . I think I’ll wind up being disappointed with the Rockies’ pick.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
You have an unnatural affinity for southpaws, you should have it checked out.
That could hurt your job prospects if your potential employers found out.
Lefties are special.
And we’re way cooler than you righties.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Was that towards me?
Because if it is… hey, guilty. I’m a lefty too. Guess there’s a ‘kindred spirits’ kind of thing.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
Tigers
select RHP Ryan Perry. Another reliever.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Mets
goes for SS Reese Havens with their second selection. Former Rockies draftee.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Steve Phillips
How is he considered an expert? I’d rather hear Lindsey Lohan’s thoughts on the draft than his.
Good Ol' Boys Rule
You used to be a GM, therefore you are an expert. Never mind that you were not a good GM.
Lindsey Lohan’s thoughts on the draft would at least be interesting, particularly if she were high.
Melville, Friedrich, Hunt, Odorizzi, Cole
All of these pitchers are sliders with a lot of talent. We’re going to be pretty happy it looks like.
Two different things
Biggest impact would mean who will be the best player. Quickest impact would mean who will make it to the major leagues fastest. I’d much rather have the former.
Padres
take 1B Allan Dykstra.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Wow, that's sort of a reach...
He’s a decent player, though, and the next best college 1B on the board after that earlier run.
Casey Kelly?
How about this Casey Kelly kid – would he be a fit for us?
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
I'd rather spend on Cole
While Kelly’s a fine athlete, I’d be surprised out of my mind if we took him.
Cole
I’m not a fan of the reports that Cole’s apparently a huge douchebag who may not actually like the game all that much. Those kinds of things bother me.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
College prospects
Does anybody know if there’s somewhere I can find a list of draft prospects by school?
MLB.com has all of them in a database
That you can sort by school. I’ll try and get you the link after our pick.
But since the draft
has already begun, I think they only list those drafted now.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
to make this season even better
we will run out of time on the clock and lose our pick… wouldnt that be fantastic?
Scott Podsenik for center field 08
Phillies
select SS Anthony Hewitt.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Wow
Anthony Hewitt…. A SS in Connecticut…. I would have just assumed he would be white.
It's actually an interesting story
He’s from NYC but a coach there saw him and helped him get into this elite Connecticut prep academy.
Interesting
Must have been weird being the only black guy in the state, now that the UConn basketball season is over.
Vinny
It’s a tie between Gordon Beckham and El Matador as far as who used the most hair gel this morning.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
No way.
Beckham just got the wig from the Boogie Nights set and tossed it on.
He had
‘special’ hair gel, from the set of Something About Mary.
who we gonna take?
Scott Podsenik for center field 08
With the 25th pick
the Colorado Rockies select LHP Christian Friedrich! Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
is selig drunk?
looks like he had too much jack
Scott Podsenik for center field 08
Ugh
Anytime you can get a guy with an incredibly low upside… well, you gotta go for that.
yep
It’s worked out so well with Reynolds so far
how old is this kid?
Scott Podsenik for center field 08
A medium throwing Lefty?
And is he a reliever or a starter?
Colorado Rockies: Continuing a long tradition of playing meaningless games in June!
Kieth Law:
Friedrich is the best pick relative to draft spot so far. He has a chance for four average or better pitches. His curveball is already among the best among college starters in the draft. He’s added a cutter that is very effective against right-handed hitters. I’m a little concerned about his command and control, so he probably won’t move as quickly as some other college arms in the first round.
The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season
Command and control
sounds like a few of our other pitchers, huh? I hope this kid can work it all out.
I don't know.
But who in Asheville’s rotation would be moved to make room? Maybe Chacin gets a promotion to Modesto?
The Snakes
pick LHP Daniel Schlereth.

...there goes Cole to the Bronx
Yankees
take RHP Gerrit Cole. Not surprising at all given the way things have fallen today.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Signability
Have these guys fallen because they are projected to be tough signs due to wanting to go to college?
TGFPR!!
More surprised by Hunt
Melville and Kelly turned a few clubs off with their well publicized bonus demands, including the teams they were hoping to fall to.
Just
another example of the rich getting richer (teams at the back getting great players).
Great?
Top comp for Gerrit Cole – Kyle Farnsworth.
Get this guy a plaque in Cooperstown already.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
Does he have the glasses?

Tyler Sample
Could the top-ranked Colorado HS player be an option at 72?
Baseball America ranked him as 42nd best player in the draft.
It’s probably more likely that they’ll take a position player in the second round though.
That would be a great pick if he's still available at that point
I see him getting taken sooner than that.
Because the Marlins

Is that like the male version of Destiny? Or a variation on Dustin? I’ve never seen that before.
I was thinking
of the beach resort in Florida. I’ve never been there, but it’s really popular with people around here. Destin is close to Mobile, which is where that guy’s from.
A's take
Tyson Ross out of Cal. Earlier in the year, he looked like a first rounder.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe

Doh...

BA says he could be one of the biggest sleepers in the draft
But I suspect they didn’t think he’d be taken this early. He went to college as a pitcher, but has emerged as a five tool outfielder. He’s sort of the Casey Weathers of outfielders in that regard.
MLB goes

Blackmon
Just watched his scouting video over at MLB.com – lefty with a decent swing and great speed. My gut reaction based upon those traits is to compare him to Cory Sullivan, but that’s not totally fair based upon 2:30 of footage.
Either way – you can’t teach speed, so I don’t mind drafting guys with that tool.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
More power than Sullivan
But he’s also less refined. It’s going to be an interesting progression for him. He’ll be old for his leagues because he’s so raw, but with talent you can’t really ignore.
Following a trend
Lots of guys in this draft whose race doesn’t match the name (Hicks and Hewitt come immediately to mind) – I was floored to see a white guy when I pulled up Blackmon’s scouting video.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
Sample to the Royals.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
