Draft Day Open Thread #1

Odorizzi? Perry? Melville? Hewitt?

The anticipation builds as the first round is set to get under way. Odorizzi's getting some late buzz, he might not be available to the Rockies after all.

Each team has five minutes to pick, correct?

So the Rockies should be making their pick at 2:05 MT at the latest?

I wish

this was held in New York City. I’d be there in a minute.

Absolutely,

I’ll believe it when I see it, but if we pass on him and he’s available, it better be for somebody really special.

by Rox Girl on Jun 5, 2008 12:04 PM MDT up reply actions

I think the two high schoolers

Odorizzi and Hewitt, would be the only guys you could justify (assuming somebody doesn’t just plummet alongside Melville).

by David OhNo on Jun 5, 2008 12:05 PM MDT up reply actions

I doubt we go over slot

Spending $3 million on Luis Vizcaino might be the money that keeps us from being able to sign Melville. Real smart, O’Dud.

Gammons

just said this draft is different: “Some teams will have a guy rated in the first round, while others will have him in the third round.” That’s just not true. You read those comments every year.

I didn't come close to finishing my draft preview

but “unheralded” college guys I like, regardless of whether the Rockies draft them or not:

Conor Gillaspie- Will hit anywhere, would win a batting title at Coors

Zach Putnam- love big sinkers

Cody Satterwhite- IF it clicks, he reminds me of Matt Clement

Aaron Shafer- Another sinker guy (watched him dominate over the weekend)

James Darnell- Pretty good power for a post first-rounder

Brandon Crawford- not really “unheralded”

Jacob Thompson- Love the curve out of the 6’6 frame, will be underdrafted

Kyle Russell- When the buzz died down, he got white hot over last two weeks, power-wise

by David OhNo on Jun 5, 2008 12:12 PM MDT reply actions

Russell would be an interesting bargain pick if he's available in the third round

Maybe even our second round selection. I like Crawford as that type of player, too, even if he went to the wrong school.

Pretty much.

But it goes against the usual practice of overstating a player’s size. Look at the NBA Draft combine results and see how some of the players there measured up against what they were listed at in college. Michael Beasley was listed at 6’10” in college, but he measured 6’7” without shoes at the draft combine.

If it's Posey

I’m trying to figure out if his given name is actually, in fact, Buster. If it’s not, and the Giants pick him, I petition we immediately start referring to him as that.

by Tom (RFTN) on Jun 5, 2008 12:38 PM MDT up reply actions

I actually paid

a whole lot more attention to the NFL draft (read scouting reports, combine news, watched college games) than I did to the MLB draft, which is odd. In any case, I’m sort of flying by the seat of my pants here since I’ve never actually HEARD of these guys (which I probably should have). In short, I just want us to get somebody good. (Big surprise).

I had forgotten that.

Some teams actually don’t like going back to draft picks that turned them down once already. Maybe Smoak does fall past Oakland.

by Rox Girl on Jun 5, 2008 1:06 PM MDT up reply actions

No ESPN

Thanks for the coverage. After watching the draft on tape last year I wanted to take off this year and watch, but alas in the office and this will have to do. Forgot to even tape it this year.

Alfonso sounds like the surprise so far, but they like those big Adam Dunn type bats there.

I think we see lots of pitchers going in this area starting with Nats who pick arms, and leaving very few left for the bottom of the draft.

by HiAspire on Jun 5, 2008 1:01 PM MDT reply actions

Also at the office

Of course, watching drafts on TV is kinda pointless. All I really need to know is who went where, not watch a bunch of guys break down the pick.

Schlereth?

Anyone know anything about Mark Schlereth’s son? (I don’t know his name.) They’ve talked to Mark a few times on the radio shows I listen to at work, and he was just mentioned as a potential first rounder. But I don’t follow the draft, really, other than what I read here, so I’m curious about him.

by holly96 on Jun 5, 2008 1:06 PM MDT reply actions

Probably late,

He’s one of those guys where there’s a lot of divergence. Anywhere from around pick #18 to the sandwich round.

Thanks

I find it interesting that the dad was a professional athlete in one sport and his son could be a professional athlete in a different sport. That doesn’t happen very often. And I’ve always liked Mark, so I hope Daniel eventually ends up in the majors.

by holly96 on Jun 5, 2008 1:18 PM MDT up reply actions

Schlereth

Danny Schlereth pitched against my Legion team a few years back – I had a pretty good front row seat to see him shut us out on two hits. He was at 91-93 with the fastball at that point with a big slider. I know he committed to UNLV, had TJ surgery, and is now topping out at 97 as the closer for Arizona.

Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.

Surgery

Hopefully Danny doesn’t take after his dad when it comes to surgeries.

by holly96 on Jun 5, 2008 1:18 PM MDT up reply actions

Buster

I think the Giants were real happy about having Posey fall to them and were hoping he would after some talk about him going #1 overall, but they’ve set themselves up now for a comparison with those two top catchers going back-to-back. If Skipworth outperforms him (as he easily could with arguably better tools and more power) they are going to look bad there with the better catcher going just after their pick. It’s set up for a comparison there for Giants fans anyway and some second-guessing. Castro gone now too so there goes the catchers. And only 2 first basemen gone with lots of good ones available, so one sliding does seem on track.

by HiAspire on Jun 5, 2008 1:09 PM MDT reply actions

So far we're both right

Reaches

Instead of picking the top available arm when a player you wanted wasn’t there as I would expect with Houston and Oakland who could use them, they both seemed to reach for something else. Arguably both good players but ones who could just as easily have gone in the lower part of the first round normally. Texas often also goes for arms, but the big powerful 1B is a nice fit to eventually fill the spot from the last highly rated 1B that they traded away. With those developments, odds going up for a pitcher to last possibly unless there is a run on them soon—which there could be with the teams coming up.

by Franchise26 on Jun 5, 2008 1:22 PM MDT reply actions

Like the Reds, they're planning on radical realignment

And that they’ll be switching to the AL where they’ll need a DH.

by Rox Girl on Jun 5, 2008 1:24 PM MDT up reply actions

They seemed to have no problem

by Tom (RFTN) on Jun 5, 2008 1:25 PM MDT up reply actions

The problem

with using Chris Duncan as an outfielder is that Chris Duncan is a horrendous outfielder.

I would think it would be a much larger issue to contend with if your third baseman is a horrendous third baseman. See: Braun, Ryan. And at least he was a good enough athlete to move to the OF.

So much for

the thought that a 1B with a middle of the order power bat was likely to fall…

I can’t believe so many teams are staying away from pitching this year with so few good ones available, but maybe that creates a red flag. Either the arms who haven’t been picked aren’t too good if teams are going elsewhere who could use pitching, or those teams are making mistakes.

by HiAspire on Jun 5, 2008 1:53 PM MDT reply actions

Friedrich is the best pick relative to draft spot so far. He has a chance for four average or better pitches. His curveball is already among the best among college starters in the draft. He’s added a cutter that is very effective against right-handed hitters. I’m a little concerned about his command and control, so he probably won’t move as quickly as some other college arms in the first round.

Lots of guys in this draft whose race doesn’t match the name (Hicks and Hewitt come immediately to mind) – I was floored to see a white guy when I pulled up Blackmon’s scouting video.

Needs a haircut

He doesn’t want to be mistaken for Eric Byrnes…..

And Sample goes

to the Royals, where I’m sure he’ll be tormenting us in a few years during the annual Interleague-from-Hell series against KC.

The only good thing about that series is the picnic

That accompanies it. The Rockies might get whooped on the diamond, but they kick butt in the sack potato race. Oh wait, I’m imagining the picnic part to hide the torment. Never mind.

Sample

I’m starting to feel old – this draft already has featured a player I played against (Schlereth) and a player my kid brother has played against (Sample).

Paramore

Maybe it’s just my ASU fandom, but I really wanted to see the Rox get Paramore.

Preston Paramore?

With a name like that, he can have a career as a porn star once he retires.
