Draft Day Open Thread #2
Christian Friedrich and Charlie Blackmon so far, picks in rounds three through five still to come tonight.
Blackmon's an interesting tools pick to me. He's got to learn to hit in a hurry, but he has all the ability to be pretty decent player and could be a solid starting corner if all goes according to plan.
These next few picks are usually where Rockies scouts have done their best work. Let's look for this year's sleepers.

Another Chris Carpenter gets taken
This one for the Cubs. I hope he doesn’t win any Cy Youngs like his namesake, mainly because I hate the Cubs.
We are all dead.
Maybe they just picked him for confusion's sake
They’re planning to switch Carp bodies with the Cardinals down the road.
Cubs take
Chris Carpenter. Carpenter’s an interesting guy even with his injury history.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Logan Schafer
That makes Schafer, Havens and Cashner as players the Rockies have previously drafted.
We really need to get more money to the draft department.
At least give our scouts some raises for finding these guys in the first place. Havens was on everybody’s map at the time, but we saw more than most with the rest.
Mets take Kirk Nieuwenhuis
Who really needs a nickname if he doesn’t want to join “Eyechart” Mientkiewicz.
We are all dead.
Nieuwenhuis
Played summer ball in Fort Collins in 2006. I didn’t think he was that special. Must’ve gotten a lot better in a couple years.
Every day is a Holliday!
Does anyone have an idea where Friedrich is going to start at?
Asheville or Modesto?
The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season
My guess is Asheville
Geographic proximity to his home, but it’s possible he could skip or at least just have a brief stay in Modesto next season.
Hopefully there will be open spots in the Asheville rotation in the next month or so

The Rockies
take Aaron Weatherford.

A guy in the SEC
with numbers like that. I’d take him any day.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
You know that old saying?
The one that goes – if you don’t like the weather in Denver, wait five minutes?
I suppose in a best case scenario, if opponents don’t like the Weather(ford) in Denver, they’re really not going to like the change in Weather(s) sure to come soon after.
Wow, that’s such a lame stretch – it sounded a lot better in my head.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
Royals
draft Tim Melville.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Melville
They don’t have a shot in hell at signing him, but it’s a nice thought.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
The Giants
had to take Brandon Crawford. There goes my hope for him.

Another Coloradan
Anthony Capra off the board in the fourth to the A’s. Capra was a lefty stud at Arvada West – he knocked my team out of the district playoffs my senior year, and I will forever root against him for that reason.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
More Colorado connections
As Sean Ratliff goes to the Mets. Believe I played against his Niwot team in Legion ball.
And Jason Kipnis to San Diego – a good friend of mine from college played high school ball with him.
Hey, I don’t claim to be an expert – I have to trumpet personal connections at this point because it’s all I’ve got.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
The Rockies
select Philip Hollingsworth.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Our last two picks don't have much projection
Our second rounder does, but he’s also near his physical peak. The Rockies have really shied away from unfinished bodies so far.
Hollingsworth
From a quick look at the videotape – I like him mechanically but I’m not blown away by his stuff. 88-90 with the fastball, 76-78 with the change and some late tail, 83 on a sweeping slider. Fastball has a little run when he gets it down, and he’s not afraid to go inside with it. This strikes me as a Keith Weiser type of pick – a guy who knows how to pitch but is going to constantly be walking a fine line.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
I'm not enthralled
Unless he has better GB capabilities than I’m seeing, he just seems like a guy who will eat up minor league innings until he reaches the point where good hitters feast on him. Alan Johnson’s close to that point right now, Brandon Hynick’s getting there too. This stuff will play up in the lower minors, but it’s not going to help the big league club.
Sean Ratliff
Went to the Mets. I might get to see his career come full circle, from a 17-year-old prodigy to the beginning of his pro career.
That would be an interesting story,
Be sure to leave a link when he heads to Savannah and/if you write it.
I won't write it
But I’ll sure as hell design the page it goes on.
Well that's almost as good...
I’m sure they’ll have a canon of page designs that everybody studies fifty years from now.
We can dream
Perhaps I should have stayed the ‘sportswriter’ course…. Alas.
Nick Romero of SDSU just got drafted by the Twins
My friend, who is the managing editor at the San Diego State Daily Aztec, says that Romero is absolutely as dumb as a post, but a great hitter.
We are all dead.
I know some posts
that would find that insulting.

Brewers pick
another Porn Name All-Star – Maverick Lasker.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
Fantastic
Maverick Lasker? Does his signing bonus include a fluffer?
I can see The Colonel giggling now.
“Those are great names!”
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
This draft has to have the most in recent memory
The children of the Top Gun generation are obviously coming of age.
Side note
I know I completely ruined the movie for my dad last week when I was back home, but I’m going to do it for you all as well:
Can you think of a more homoerotic movie in mainstream cinema than the volleyball scene in Top Gun?
I go to
Quentin Tarentino on this. See video (salty language).

select Louisville 3B Chris Dominguez.

Chris Dominguez
3b, Louisville. There’s your upside selection.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
Chris Dominguez
Another 3B. Scouting report mentions great potential, but inconsistent application. Doesn’t sound like anyone we know, right?
We are all dead.
Yes
What an awful thing to have taken a potential impact third baseman in the fifth round. Horrible, just horrible.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
That's unfair to both
Dominguez has considerably more contact issues, he isn’t a true third baseman and if he has a future in Denver it will be at first as Todd’s successor. He’s just a big guy that if we can somehow solve the pitch selection/contact issues will pay off in a big way, but he’s not another Ian Stewart.
I don't think you're being fair to Dominguez now
He can play third, with a plus plus arm and decent athleticism for him massive frame. I would think he’s a better comparison to Troy Glaus if anything.
He may be a tough sign as a college sophomore, but I really want this guy in house. His hit for power tool is better than any player we currently have playing in the minors.
I really don't know.
I see it more as outfielder’s arm without an outfielder’s range. I could see him working in right field for most teams, but not the Rockies. I haven’t been impressed with his footwork at third and he doesn’t react well off the bat from what I’ve seen. He is a better defender than Atkins, maybe better than Holcomb, but I’m not sure if he’s more than average at the position. If I’m wrong and he is a Glaus-type, that would be a huge boon, but from what I’ve seen, I think he’ll be more like Ty Wigginton.
ugh... that's a bad comp...
I needed more coffee, sorry. I see him as a Wigginton type of defender at third, but with a stronger arm and much more power. I think maybe a better comp would actually be Jeff Francoeur, a right fielder with power, some contact issues and an absolute gun for an arm, and the two have similar body types. It actually seems to me like we finally have legit heir to Hawpe in right if he can extend his range a little bit.
Oh and don't get me wrong,
I really want us to sign him too, and the power that he and Roling represent is something the system sorely lacks right now, I just don’t see him as a plus defender at third.
I wouldn'tsayplus defender either
but I’d be in no hurry to movehim off the position. He’s still relatively young and raw in all facetsof the game. I’d like to see where he is after a few instructional leagues before moving him, asI think the footwork issues can be corrected.
Another round, or until 9 ET.

Another Colorado kid
Shane Dyer from Eaton goes to the Rays. I have nothing else to say about him that would be acceptable on here.
Every day is a Holliday!
More on Dominguez
Kevin Goldstein at BP says Dominguez could be a tough sign because he’s a draft eligible sophomore with better talent than his draft slot suggests.
After watching the video – I see a 6’5”, 235-lb potential beast with legit power. If everything breaks right… hmm, let’s say best-case scenario has him as another Matt Holliday?
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
In case you couldn't tell
I’m kinda high on this pick.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
I'm high on it too,
It’s my second favorite pick of the draft besides Friedrich, but I reserve the right to stick Blackmon ahead once I see him in person.
Another CO connection
Shane Dyer. Former Rockies draft pick, played at Eaton. Covered several of his games through the years. Throws hard as hell, has that great Eaton knuckle-curve, and has a deceptive delivery.
He’ll be going to the Rays and I suspect he’s got a future in the bullpen.
My brother's first High School at-bat was against Dyer
It was the summer before his freshman year and before Dyer’s senior year in legion ball. Needless to say, he struck out.
Every day is a Holliday!
Wouldn't worry too much
I saw a lot of people strike out against him.
Story about Dyer, though:
His senior year, they play in the state title game against Roosevelt. He throws perhaps the best game of his season, striking out double digits, pretty sure he didn’t allow an earned run, just played his ass off. Sometime late in the game, 6th inning or so, a player makes an error. And then that same player follows that up with two errors on one play. Game essentially over right there, despite the fact that Dyer was the top pitcher in the state that season.
I’m interviewing him after the game. He’s surprisingly calm, I had been told he was going to be drafted right before I interviewed him, he knew it, and we focused on his future. At the end of the interview, he points to the player who made the errors and says, “It’s HIS fault. HE dropped the ball. Fucking print it.”
Needless to say, I didn’t print that quote. But I think that was a telling story about Dyer.
I don't think the anecdote was meant to make fans for him
It sounds like he’d be a great golfer, though. Maybe a bowler. Something that doesn’t involve teammates, anyway.
So
You had to go against Ottoson, eh? Stud pitcher. Better than Dyer, I think. He’ll probably be drafted tomorrow, I’m guessing.
He's been on a rival team
Every year since my brother was in 7th grade. I can’t talk about him anymore without using the F word.
Every day is a Holliday!
I like Ottoson
He’s actually a year younger than everyone else in his class. He was 14-years-old, mowing down a 5A team when I first covered him. He was 17 when he just finished off whoever the hell they beat in the title game.
I've got a story about him
But it might get ol’ Danley in trouble with CHSAA.
Every day is a Holliday!
You peaked my interest
Although I always found Danley to be incredibly nice.
Does Ottoson live outside Eaton?
All I know
Is that Ottoson played on a very good team out of Greeley in middle school, and the next summer most of that team showed up in Eaton Reds uniforms.
And I’ve always found Danley to be a whining jackass who complains about every call that goes against him.
Every day is a Holliday!
I assumed all along he was recruiting
But Danley is a funny dude when you talk to him.
Whites Sox
draft Kenneth Williams a year after the Rockies did.

How many rounds today?
I thought it was 5… Is it 10?
Another Buchholz
Alexander Buchholz went to the Reds at #179. Is he related to either Clay or Taylor? If not, what the heck is going on with all these Buchholzes.
No, but
Alex has a brother, Matt, playing of UMBC.

Hey, LeCroy played in the NL...
and sure, it was an unmitigated disaster and he made Frank Robinson cry, but… hey, maybe in the future we’ll carry three catchers – Ianetta as the starter, McKenry as the defensive backup, and Rolling as the PH-emergency catcher.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
And let's not overlook
The local angle – Roling went to GJ Central.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
I knew that name sounded familiar
That’s my high school! Of course I’m the old man around here, having graduated in 1994.
1996 for me (though not from GJ Central, of course--Pomona for me)
You’re only two years older than me. But it does seem like there are lots of 20-somethings around here.
The Rockies take
Ariz. St. C Kiel Roling

The Angels picked up a good JUCO player at 105
That’s too bad Ryan Chaffee wasn’t drafted by a National League team, he only went 3 for 3 in the World Series with a HR. To get his team into the tournament he threw a complete game shutout with 18k’s.
Somebody stole my Rocktober!!
Chipola Alum..
BTW The Dodgers catcher Russell Martin is from the same school as Chaffee.
