Fastball, curveball guy
who had an undistinguished career for BC.

just checked out his stats, looks like a high k guy, but not a whole lot going on there
do we know the velocity on his fastball?

BA says 91-94
was generating some late buzz. Probably a good pick.

Still, Yacko had a huge Northwoods League season last year
Not allowing an earned run and holding opponents to .126 AVG. I really like this pick a lot. He could be a very good reliever.
Yacko
nice name

Round 11
Brandon Walker, LHP, Texas.

Goes by Kyle.
Not exactly a sterling season in 2008.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
He was highly touted coming out of high school, though
if I recall correctly. I’ll have to look it up.
The scouting video
shows some good things. I liked what I saw. A hard throwing lefty, seemed to lack some control, but I saw some good things.
"Dodson! We've got Dodson here!"
What, nobody else jumping on the Wayne Knight in Jurassic Park quotes? How do I even know that? Sorry.
The guy's name
was Lewis Dodgson.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe

Realistically
how can I be expected to know the spelling of the character? I read the book in, what, 1992? I’ve seen the movie of course many times since then…but I admit to not looking at the spelling of character names…OK, so I’m just making excuses now. Hanging my head in shame…
looks like we are going after a LOT of pitchers

It's actually a good sign that we're going to go hard after Dominguez
Which would make me very happy.
Ummm
so I guess the front office doesn’t think we need position players?

Round 12
Ryan Peisel, 3B, Georgia
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
College
Number of high schoolder picked by the Rockies in the first 12 rounds: 0
Number of pitchers taken: 8 (5 right, 3 lefty)
Round 13
Erik Wtezel, 2B, Fresno State.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Couple UGA kids
I’ll link a story when I get into the office, assuming it’s on the budget.
I like the picks
Dodson has one of the better two seamers in the draft, though no secondary pitches, and Peisel seems like a decent minor league depth pick with some utility upside.
Round 14
Joseph Massey, 1B, The Baylor Schools.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
The Baylor Schools?
What is that? I guess I went to the Colorado Northwest Community College-Hayden Schools…
I found
a Baylor School in Tennessee, which is where Massey’s from. I believe he has a commitment to UVa.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Looking through the archives of the season
He’s a heck of a player, and nearly led them to the state title as both pitcher and slugger. I hope we can lure him away from the commitment with the Monforts free spending ways.
Round 15
Juan Rodriguez, RHP, Universidad del Turabo. There’s our guy from Puerto Rico.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Round 16
Chad Rose, RHP, Broward CC.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Round 17
Alan Deratt, RHP, UNC Asheville.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Big South Pitcher of the Year.
1.74 ERA, .210 BAA.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
I've read about him a couple of times this Spring
In the Citizen-Times while looking up Tourists stuff. He seems a decent pitcher.
18th Round
Chad Jacobson, 1B, USC-Aiken – and before that, Dakota Ridge High School. I believe he was D-II Player of the Year this year.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
Confirmation
Yes, he was the D-II Player of the Year this year. This could be a nice steal.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
I'm liking some of these sleepers on Day 2
Particularly Tyler Massey if we can sign him, but Yacko, Dodson, and Jacobson have some legitimate impact potential as starters or frontline relievers.
To catch up on Colorado connections
In the 12th round, former Boulder HS pitcher Ari Ronick (Portland) went to San Francisco, and former Heritage HS shortstop Jake Opitz (Nebraska) went to the Cubbies. I played against both – and in fact remember my team knocking Ronick out of a start in the first inning when we played Boulder at our place.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
Big kid
6’5”, 215, hit 17 doubles and 17 homers this past season, also stole 20 bases.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
I'm betting he's going to be a new DFE
Massey might, too, Massey’s scheduled to play in the Cal Ripken League and Lape in the Cape Cod league this sumer. I wonder if we wait to get serious about offers to them until after seeing what they do against advanced competition with wood bats.
Interesting pick
Trice only made 18 appearances this past season out of a loaded UNC bullpen. But he held batters to a .197 OAVG and fanned 20 in 16.1 innings. Sort of reminds me of the Will Harris pick, actually, as I remember Harris not having had much mound time the season in which the Rox took him.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
Harris had some serious stuff, though
And was LSU’s closer at the end. Trice is a middle reliever that gets lost in the shuffle of more talented guys ahead of him. Although I like this from his bio:
Lists Naval Weapons and Amphibious Warfare as his favorite class at UNC.
Another Colorado connection
Colt Sedbrook (Arizona) to the Cardinals in the 22nd. Former Broomfield HS standout.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
Schnaitmann
He’s already wearing the right logo.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
Elam
Must have gotten hurt this year, because he only threw one inning for the Irish. When healthy, he’s unhittable (.155 OAVG his junior year) but command is a huge issue. If he can get healthy and somebody can teach the kid how to throw strikes, this could be a dynamite lefty reliever.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
From BA:
Elam’s control is even more iffy than Graffy’s, and it went away in 2008. In his lone inning of work, Elam walked four and threw four wild pitches. His only other appearance came in an exhibition against low Class A South Bend, during which he beaned a batter.
He’s a lot like our Kyle Walker pick, a power lefty who lacks any sort of command that could turn out to be big finds if we can teach it to them. From our experience with Morales, I don’t know how much confidence I have in that happening right now.
Walker & Elam
Let’s just get them both restraining orders against Bob Apodaca for the time being. That should help.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
25th Round
Andy Burns, SS, Rocky Mountain High School. He’s already told everyone he wouldn’t sign unless he was a first round pick, so… this is kind of a waste, actually.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
I kind of like it as a play here
We’ll have as good a shot of convincing him otherwise as anybody, and after round 20 or so, the quality of players usually makes the picks the equivalent of lotto tickets anyway.
Agree
I like the pick, too. Not a whole lot lost if they don’t sign him. And if he changes his mind – as teenagers are apt to do – then we get a steal. Low risk/high reward.
Dexter Fowler was going to go to college, too …
Hopefully the fact that we’re the local team will help.
28
Michael Zuanich, OF, UCSB – the same school that brought us Ryan Spilborghs.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
31 Rod Scurry Jr
He’s got a big league pedigree and a big league frame, not big league stuff, though
Previously
drafted by the Rockies in 2005, 39th round.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
32 William Scott, Kell HS
His teammate, Zeke Spruill is a more well known player and was drafted by the Braves in the second round, I wonder if Rockies scouts saw something they liked in Scott while checking our Spruill.
33 Aaron Gates, Orange Lutheran HS
Second round in a row where we take an HS kid with a higher profile teammate. In this case, Gerrit Cole, Yankees first rounder.
T.R. Keating
Former Lakewood Lion and UNC Bear to Baltimore in the 34th.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
35
Maikol Gonzalez, IF, Tusculum. Like Jacobson in the 18th, this is a guy who put up huge numbers at the D-II level.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
Rockies' 42nd round pick in 2005.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
I was trying to figure out why the name seemed so familiar
And it was because I saw him on Div-II All American teams with Jacobson.
Cubs drafted
Bob Brenly’s son, Michael.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
36
Patrick Rose, OF, UC Santa Barbara.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
37
Delta Cleary, CF, LSU-Eunice.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Slugged .670, stole 31 of 38 bases.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Cleary
Named Gatorade Player of the Year for Arkansas in 07.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
I like this
Cleary would seem to be very toolsy, and if the Rox can bring him in I think he’d have a little upside.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
From Today's Jonesboro Sun:
Burgi said Cleary has pro-level talent.
"I think no doubt he does," Burgi said. "He can run and he’s going to get a lot stronger and hit for some power. ... He’s already filled out a lot (since high school). ... To me he’s a pro prospect.
"I’ve had players not as good as him get into pro ball."
Another Coloradan
Delta’s Chris Wilson (Trinidad St.) to San Fran in the 38th.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
38
Tyler Pill, RHP, Covina Hs.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Would have been funnier
If it had been the Giants taking him.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
Probably not
Covered Ottoson. Has a nasty curveball, but my guy tells me he’ll probably go to South Mountain (where Shane Dyer went before being drafted by the Rays in the 6th round).
Two kids from Eaton in the same year….. Rare for a town that small.
Oh I know....
And Drew Smith was No. 3. He threw in the mid-80s as well. That’s 3 bonafide 3A aces in one rotation. No wonder teams like Highland and Brush haven’t beaten that school in like 283 years.
That's also the year
That Cody Schlagel, who’s headed to Southern Miss after 2 JuCo years, was a senior for Roosevelt.
Actually, the last time Highland beat Eaton was 1978. Eaton’s 60-0 against them since. But Highland sucks.
Every day is a Holliday!
Schlagel anecdote
Dude came in to our office a few years ago for the athlete of the year photo shoot.
Shooter takes him in the studio, takes a bunch of wonderful shots, Schlagel leaves, says his goodbyes… Whatever.
15 minutes later, the shooter comes up to our desk laughing. Apparently Schlagel smelled like tequila. It wasn’t quite dark outside yet.
Schlagel could be pretty solid at Southern Miss.
Schlagel played up in Greeley last summer
He looked really good. Put up solid numbers at Daytona Beach CC, too.
His smelling like tequila doesn’t surprise me a bit.
Every day is a Holliday!
You can't really wast
a 39th round pick since 39th round picks are 39th round picks.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
It's hardly a waste
Either way it’s a win-win for the Rockies. They get some nice goodwill publicity for drafting the local talent whether he signs or not. The picks in this range are typically nepotism drafts anyway. From watching these drafts for years I know the club has zero expectations from about pick #35 on and anything they get on the field, even in the minor league ranks, is just a bonus. That’s why you’ll see the nepotism picks right around here
And, to prove your point
See the 40th round pick.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
a point I apparently had to make twice
Sorry for being repetitive in that paragraph. I should have previewed. it before posting.
40
Kemer Quick, OF, Rockhurst HS.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
that's Kemer Quirk
And yep, that’s Jamie’s son.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
41
Richard Espy, SS, Red Mountain HS. Duane’s son?
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
You sure?
His son’s full name is Richard Dean Espy.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Then you might be right
The media guide just says he has a son named Dean, so I suppose that could very well be him.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
42
Taylor Hightower, C, Cartersville HS.
"Nuts!" - Gen. Anthony McAuliffe
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
He was the country's #1 catcher going into the season
According PGcrosschecker. Firm commitment to Ole Miss.
prep catcher, I should add
I’m sure Castro was ranked ahead and obviously if they were to rank them postseason Skipworth and others would be in front. It’s another 12 million to one type deal that we actually sign him
One of our reporters watched him play last week
He’s good. Too bad he’ll go to college.
From the horse's mouth
“He hits the ball hard. He hit it far, but the pitchers South Effingham used in that game (expletive) blow. They were (expleteive) awful, but he hit the ball (expletive) hard. Too bad Colorado (expletive) sucks (expletive) balls”
Just the sports guys
Obviously a good deal of my friends are made up of journalists. It’s always awkward when the news folks hang out with the sports folks, especially if booze is involved (and since we’re journalists, it always is). The fact that I only use the F bomb once a week or less on this board is a testament to my ability to hold back. My default setting involves the f-word.
My theory
If you’re around a locker room setting long enough, you can’t help it. That’s my excuse, anyway.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
Coloradan
Derek Riley (Chandler-Gilbert) from Conifer to the Cubs.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
And another
Dexter Price of Air Academy goes to the Brewers.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
So we got both Gordon Beckham's lesser infield mate
And Pedro Alvarez’s. Add that to the two HS picks at 32 and 33 and you get the sense that we think greatness rubs off on teammates somehow.
next three
44 Matthew Swagerty, RHP, Prestonwood Christian Academy – his draft video shows him as a catcher and second baseman my guess is his arm’s his best tool at those position. Skinny kid, he’ll need a lot of development
45 Bradley McAtee, RHP, UC Davis.
46 James Cesario, 2B, Houston
No
You’re in blogging because someone has to hold down the couch in your mom’s basement.
And it pisses the shit out of me.
You're good people
Glad you picked that up. Solid.
Next two
47 Mark Lincoln, RHP, American River College – Had a 1.46 ERA as the Beavers closer brother of Cardinals pitcher Mike Lincoln.
48 Austin Nola, SS, Catholic High School, Louisiana. Fitting last name for where he’s from. Anyway, here’s more about him.
Last two
49 Roy “Carl” Uhl, CF, UC Riverside. Speed is his only attribute, he was a pest in a game against USC I listened to early this year. Okay, I take that first part back as he does have that whole tough to strike out thing going and a pretty good feel for the strike-zone.
50 Josh Hungerman, LHP, Cleveland St. – Probably Irrelevant.
Also
he happens to have a nickname that has nothing to do with his first name. I love that.
I'm guessing it's his middle name, I don't know for sure
His dad’s first name is also Roy, so I’m assuming they called him Carl to differentiate the two.
Feed my amusement
And just let me know it’s for no good reason other than he decided to be called Carl one day. Or that he’s nicknamed after Carl Weathers.
Older Players
Casper might be more competitive this year than in years past since they drafted more college players.
