thoughts

with a day off tomarrow, we get Iannetta, starting a day game after a night game….Rare for a catcher, and rare for Hurdle to play Iannetta

Lefties must really hit Suppan…cause this is a very heavy lefty line up! man look at those lefties!

Guess the Brewers gave up on the line up of having the pitcher bat 8th ala Larusa with the Cardinals. I was really hoping to see that line up again.

Pods hits Suppan at a .364 clip

which is likely why he’s in there, Spilly probably needs a rest after being the full-time LFer, and be still my heart WHAT? CDI actually got a second straight start? Shocking, shocking. He and Atkins are the only righties in there.

We are all dead.

And actually they don't

Lefties hit .255 off Suppan this year.

only 2 right handed bats

7 out of 9 are left handed hitters (counting Francis, and I do). So Know Your Lefty Reliever:

51 Shouse, Brian RP L L 5-11 196 9/26/68 Effingham, IL 15

the Brewers have used him as just a LOOGY but also have extended him some, as he’s pitched 2 full innings, 2 of his last 3 appearances

I’m concerned.

Silver, how was the energy at last night's game?

Was the crowd into the game? Was the Rockies to Brewers ratio of fans acceptable?

Somebody stole my Rocktober!!

by Charlie77 on Jun 8, 2008 1:39 PM MDT reply actions

Yeah

The energy was really good, especially after Hawpe jacked it out and Iannetta followed suit. There was some annoying lady in front of me on her cell phone, standing up and waving (!!!) so I barked at her to sit down, which was fun, since I’m not usually a loud person. But I get fired up about sports. I was into the game the whole time of course, cheering for every batter and Reynolds, and very happy to be back. If you ask me, there were a few too many Brewers fans, especially a pair of ditzes waving Brewers logos at Braun from farther down in my section. (We were in 148, LF). Although it was fun when after Braun robbed Atkins of a hit, a few guys stood up and started doing the “Over-rated” chant at him.

We are all dead.

by Silverblood on Jun 8, 2008 1:42 PM MDT up reply actions

Good energy

but it died down towards the end/middle innings.

Way too many Brewer fans. In fact at the bars after the game, I was amazed at how many people game out to Denver, for the game and the weekend.

I think

we are all fairly aware of this by now.

by Silverblood on Jun 8, 2008 2:13 PM MDT up reply actions

Then why

are some of you surprised when a bad team plays badly?

by rosenthal on Jun 8, 2008 2:14 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm not surprised

for one. But I don’t think it’s unfair to have a glimmering of hope, then to be irritated when it returns to status quo.

We are all dead.

by Silverblood on Jun 8, 2008 2:15 PM MDT up reply actions

So....

When a team plays up to its logical expectations, that should be frustrating?

I think, realistically, this was a .500 team heading into the season. One big injury (Tulo) and a lot of underachieving (Ubaldo, Morales, Tulo before injury, Francis, Corpas) makes it an awful team.

Combine that with the fact that Hurdle is retarded and, well, you have a pretty * bad team.

by rosenthal on Jun 8, 2008 2:20 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't entirely get

why you are trying to call some of us out for hoping for better things. Being a sports fan doesn’t involve a lot of logic.

We are all dead.

by Silverblood on Jun 8, 2008 2:21 PM MDT up reply actions

That's my biggest problem with sports fans

The lack of logic.

Perhaps it’s because I’ve spend five nights a week hating athletes and sports. Perhaps it’s because I’m a super genius. (That’s a joke).

Either way, I think this team is fixable. I just happen to think it involves trading Atkins, Holliday, Hawpe, Helton, Fuentes and Francis. Also, I think we should all chip in and hire a hit on Hurdle. That would be help, too.

by rosenthal on Jun 8, 2008 2:27 PM MDT up reply actions

Well then

if you know we’re illogical, and you hate that, why do you bother?

We are all dead.

by Silverblood on Jun 8, 2008 2:29 PM MDT up reply actions

Because

I think there are more logical here than illogical. And I have no other outlet to discuss the Rockies.

I think most people on this site whine and complain because, well, that’s just what you DO when your team is absolutely effing atrocious, as ours is. You whine and you complain and you act like you care a lot more than you really do, when in reality you’re probably like me: you assumed we weren’t making the playoffs in about early-May, and now you hope they can figure something out for the future.

This is your moment. Do something.

Oh Todd

That was awful.

Atkins…....?

Nope

No use getting excited. It’s 2008, folks.

Excessively.

That's how you have 23 rbi's...

in 225 at-bats, while batting third or fourth all season. I know this is not an offensive juggernaut at the top of the order, but that RBI total is embarrassing for a player of his quality.

In other news....

UC Irvine is playing baseball very well right now. If you ‘d like to see some good baseball, I’d suggest flipping to ESPN to watch the Anteaters.

I'm gonna be pissed

Ummm

Was that a leadoff bunt-single attempt?

Did we switch managers today?

Two outs, then two walks for the Viz

Because that’s just how he rolls.

We are all dead.

by Silverblood on Jun 8, 2008 3:38 PM MDT reply actions

Don't you

love when we completely waste money on worthless free agents? Wouldn’t that money just be better earmarked for the draft, so we can afford to draft a Melville in the third round?

by rosenthal on Jun 8, 2008 3:40 PM MDT up reply actions

That would presuppose

some kind of competent FO on our part.

We are all dead.

by Silverblood on Jun 8, 2008 3:41 PM MDT up reply actions

O'Dowd

is wildly incompetent. A horrible GM. The only difference between him and Dave Littlefield is that (I think) Matt Holliday used an insane amount of PEDs to get the numbers he’s produced the past two years.

Fill Me In

When did baseball switch to two outs an inning?

Or did the Rockies just unilaterally start following the rule, and the umps didn’t get the memo? They might want to check on that.

by Yokel on Jun 8, 2008 3:38 PM MDT reply actions

Shock and awe

The Viz does not allow a run. The big shock will be if we score another one.

Great AB by Spilly

but it’s Q followed by one of a not-so-appetizing combo.

We are all dead.

by Silverblood on Jun 8, 2008 3:53 PM MDT reply actions

Too much split playing here

I think Hurdle went one batter early with Spilborghs. You have a weak LOOGY on the mound against Stewart, a good lefty hitter, and Q, a poor hitter in general. By using spilborghs a batter too early, you leave yourself with weak hitters to follow. The question wasn’t if Spilly could do it or not, but which lefty do you want to put your trust in, Stewart or Q?

by David OhNo on Jun 8, 2008 3:56 PM MDT reply actions

That's what I'm thinking

Stewie hits lefties well, and using Spilly there left us with… you know.

We are all dead.

by Silverblood on Jun 8, 2008 3:57 PM MDT up reply actions

Of course Stewart has more K potential there

so you run the risk of getting an out without advancing the baserunner. However, I still think the odds are greater with Stew then Spillborghs.

Series over streaks..

Just remember the team needs to win series, there’s no way they’re winning out this season. But they won their last two series and if that continues they’ll be in good shape.

Somebody stole my Rocktober!!

by Charlie77 on Jun 8, 2008 4:20 PM MDT reply actions

Good shape for not finishing last

but missing the playoffs is close to a foregone conclusion.

At that point, is it good to be respectably bad, or the eventual owners of Stephen Strasburg?

by David OhNo on Jun 8, 2008 4:50 PM MDT up reply actions

Depends

How much money will Strasburg want? If he’s out of our price range, well… Then let’s pick up some w’s.

What’s this about tacos?

by rosenthal on Jun 8, 2008 5:06 PM MDT up reply actions

No good answer on Strasburg

I’m only half joking on tanking it. Players and coaches should always play each game with meaning, and the desire to improve should be upheld on the field…

However, the FO should not treat any small hot streak as a sign of life, and should instead look at the percentages. If we are just looking at winning series, and we’re saying by that to just take two of three, then we’ll need to win the next fifteen series just to get back to .500 (not contention). That’s .660 ball for 45 games, carrying us close to the end of July, and still five games shy of the Diamondbacks current pace, 11 games shy of the wild card Cardinals pace!

I’m not saying this to you specifically, as I know you agree with me, but O’Dowd’s goal this season should be to re-tool as best he can with Holliday and Fuentes at least, and possibly Atkins if the right deal comes along. Bottom line, none of the three will be back when their contracts end, since the Rockies won’t go above market, and these guys are already seeking “fair” market. Such is the business of baseball, but if you’re good at it, you can turn things around quickly (see Oakland).

It’s not rebuilding, it’s re-tooling, and it will only take a few months.

by David OhNo on Jun 8, 2008 6:33 PM MDT up reply actions

Ah, but the operative phrase there

is “if you’re good at it.”

Your ideas make perfect sense to me. Unfortunately, I’m not convinced that O’Dowd is “good at it”.

Blame the Red Sox!

by rockhead on Jun 8, 2008 7:32 PM MDT up reply actions

Exactly

It’s also realizing that we’re not the Dodgers. We’re not the Cubs. We can’t afford to sign players like Holliday as they approach free agency, and that’s fine. We can afford to keep guys like Spilborghs up until their big contract, though, to replace Holliday’s production.
