Hawpe

in the 4 spot isn’t exactly starting off as a rousing success.

by 4thturn on Jul 1, 2008 8:47 PM MDT reply actions

It's more Hurdlelogic...

he seems to think you have to go L-R-L-R in the middle of the order instead of just putting them where they belong…with Helton, Holliday, Atkins, Hawpe at 2-5…that’s just my opinion

by jimmyski on Jul 1, 2008 8:48 PM MDT up reply actions

Maybe

Hurdle is trying to depress Hawpe’s trade value.

by Tom (RFTN) on Jul 1, 2008 8:50 PM MDT up reply actions

by Tom (RFTN) on Jul 1, 2008 8:51 PM MDT up reply actions

by 4thturn on Jul 1, 2008 8:53 PM MDT up reply actions

Hurdlelogic

If Tulo gets on, Cook is due up. Cook has thrown 69 pitches. Question: Do you pinch-hit for Cook? Normal logic says no. Hurdlelogic says YES, he’s a pitcher, we pinch hit for him and let somebody blow it in the 9th!

WY

I’m really excited to be there. No, there’s not a whole lot going on in comparison to Denver, but there seems to be a lot of small-town charm there – good, honest, hard-working people without a hint of pretense. I can get behind that. And the station I’ll be working for is a Rockies Radio Network affiliate, so I’ll never be far from the Rox.

Awesome job by Cookie

He did it against the Pads on 74 pitches last year, he does it again this year on 79. Both times with Iannetta behind the plate, I must add. And this is the first time I’ve paid attention to the Rockies in a week because the pain and agony of another fricking 8-game slide has been too much to endure. I have tickets to the July 4th fireworks game (mainly for the fireworks, as I fully expect the Rockies to fail). Hopefully Cookie recovers from his mini-slide, as he seriously has 1/3 of the WHOLE TEAM’s wins. Why can’t we make him the pitching coach and FIRE APODACA? Seriously.

Whoof. Getting heated there. Anyway, I need to go off and talk to my sister since I have to get up at 6 am again. Argh. Try to fail less, Rockies, and maybe I’ll be around more.

We are all dead.

by Silverblood on Jul 1, 2008 9:10 PM MDT reply actions

Whoa.

Look at what Wells did in Colorado Springs tonight.

Player IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
Wells 2.1 11 12 5 3 2 1 8.59

Maybe it’s because I’m not baseball-smart, but I can’t imagine how that R/ER difference is possible. I’m sure it can be explained, but I don’t know how.

by dogs on Jul 1, 2008 9:15 PM MDT reply actions

Easy to explain

Here was Wells’s second inning: single, wild pitch, strikeout (out #1), single, single (run scores), error (should be out #2, run scores), fielder’s choice (should be out #3.) Six more runs scored before Wells actually recorded the third out. Because minus the error there are already three outs (and the second run doesn’t score, never mind runs 3-8), the last seven runs are unearned.

A pleasure to watch you pitch, Mr. Cook. Thanks for reminding us why we keep tuning in night after night.

A side note – anybody with knowledge of the apartment rental market in northern Wyoming is advised to contact yours truly. I have taken a job as the sports radio broadcaster in Worland, WY so I’m gonna need a place to lay my head in the most sparsely populated state in the union.

by Franchise26 on Jul 1, 2008 9:15 PM MDT reply actions

That's pretty country up there...unfortunately it takes forever to get anywhere.

If Worland doesn’t have anything…Thermopolis might…it’s a decent size town about 30 or so miles down the road.

I just made the drive from Ft. Collins to Powell, Wyo a few weeks ago for a livestock show…there is definitely not much to see between Casper and Shoshoni though.

by jimmyski on Jul 1, 2008 9:19 PM MDT up reply actions

You're tellin me

I just got back from there, and that drive to Casper to Shoshoni really felt like it took me 9 hours by itself. Yeesh, is that an ugly drive. But Shoshoni to Thermop – with the state park and canyon – now that drive makes up for the previous 90 miles and then some.

by Tom (RFTN) on Jul 1, 2008 9:27 PM MDT up reply actions

Ugly as in

Barren, dry, windy. There is literally NOTHING. The mountains are too far away to adequately enjoy on either side and there’s not enough cattle hanging around to be interesting.

Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.

by Franchise26 on Jul 1, 2008 9:33 PM MDT up reply actions

If you ever get a chance you should make the drive over the pass from

Sheridan to Greybull or Powell. It’s absolutely amazing. The roads a little steep though, 10% grade, so I wouldn’t recomend pulling anything over it, but as far as scenery goes its amazing.

My favorite drive, although not for most people, would be through the Sandhills of Nebraska, especially from Thedford to Valentine.

by jimmyski on Jul 1, 2008 9:38 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm sure I'll see that drive

I’m broadcasting high school sports as part of my job, so I’ll probably be heading to places like Sheridan and Greybull fairly frequently.

Powell

Travelled up from Casper to Powell (through Shoshone) many times as a child to visit my grandparents.

Scenery alternates from desolate to gorgeous, depending upon the stretch of road.

Getting up into the edge of Montana and seeing some wild horses was always fun (wonder if any are still left…been maybe 15-20 years since I last went to see them).

by MADness on Jul 1, 2008 10:42 PM MDT up reply actions

I-70 through Kansas

As boring a drive as I can fathom – there’s just nothing there. But it’s not ugly – at least not entirely.

Driving from Crawfordsville, IN to West Lafayette gets pretty ugly too.

Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.

by Franchise26 on Jul 1, 2008 9:48 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't even notice that drive anymore...

I actually teach in Colby, KS at the Community College and coach a Livestock Judging team….so we run up and down I-70 so much that I don’t even pay attention anymore…

I will agree with Tom that quite possibly the worst drive ever is either from Guymon to Boise City or the drive from Guymon to San Angelo besides Amarillo and Lubbock there is absolutely nothing and the wind never stops blowing!!!

by jimmyski on Jul 1, 2008 10:03 PM MDT up reply actions

Chacin is making his 1st Cal League start and has given up only 2 hits in 6 innings, 1 of those being a bunt single in the 2nd. He has not given up a hit since the 2nd and has retired 14 in a row w/ 6 k’s. Not too bad.

This is big time

not that “being on the map” is important in the long run, but getting your prospects noticed is a good way to get positive press on your club, positive press generates interest, and… you get the cycle.

Nothing gets prospect mavens going like a youngster jumping a level and still dominating. Chacin is one of the few bright spots in an otherwise gloomy season. He’s at least someting to be proud of.

He just finished the 7th

and added 2 more K’s. No runs yet. I was listening and didn’t hear much in the way of a fastball in the 90’s, but his curveball was unreal. He was also pitching inside a lot, which I like. He is doing this against one of the best hitting teams in the Cal League in a small ballpark.

That's how I see it

Our (Rockies) nation turns its lonely eyes to… Jhoulys Chacin!

Hey smokin, where you at listening on radio? I’m in CO following the online box but its slow.

There's still a lot to like

down on the farm:

-Ian Stewart: Sure he may have lost luster to some after his call-up, but it’s easy to forget that he just turned 23 years old. Finally two years removed from wrist troubles, Stewart’s power has come alive in AAA, and is very real. His slugging is over .600 both at home and on the road, his away OPS is above .950, and if you need visual proof, replay the homer he hit at Coors that hit the third deck. The lesson now is that Stewart needs time to adjust from level to level, so once he’s acclimated to the pro game, he’ll be fine.

-Dexter Fowler: Flipped a switch around June first and went from good to great. New mold leadoff type with solid power potential but plenty of gap power and patience to be a threat at the plate. Speed is still there, but it’s hard to steal bags when you don’t stop at first (15 of 38 hits since June first have been XBH). Plenty of speed for center, and an improving arm. Excellent personality too.

-Aneury Rodriguez: Young for his level but has made big strides in keeping the hit rate down while maintaining a good command/power blend. Good road numbers shows he hasn’t let the hitter’s havens in Cali get the best of him. Real riser.

-Christian Friedrich: Hasn’t thrown yet, but landing the second best draft lefty at 25 is already enough to be excited about. Doesn’t have no. 1 velocity, but he’s a bigtime K potential pitcher that has a no. 2 ceiling. 93 mph is plenty when you have a yellow hammer. Should breeze through low minors even without top command.

I could name others, but this is a good base to get excited about.

How's Casey Weathers doing?

I’ve heard good, but not much detail.

Sorry I went to bed shortly after my post

or at least turned off my computer, but I went to a link on Modesto’s website to listen to the game. Most of his K’s came on the breaking ball, but it was fun to listen to him. Only 20 in the Cal League, he’s pretty exciting. And I agree w/ David OhNo there are many other players to be excited about especially pitching. The guys on the Modesto boradcast were talking about a manager in the Cal League saying we had the best overall pitching in the league. I like Asheville’s pitching w/ Riordan and Graham, and some of the bullpen guys down there, and some guys at Tulsa w/ Roe, Hynick, Weathers, and Strop.

Just had to state the obvious...

Aaron Cook for President! The man is amazing! He just rocks…that is all.

Willy?

Did anyone ever hear what happened to Willy? There was a note on Gameday that he had left with a leg injury.
