Game #96: Redman vs. Pelfrey

Colorado Rockies at New York Mets, Jul 13, 2008 6:05 PM MDT

ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball, Mark Redman, and Mike Pelfrey. Not exactly the pitching matchup ESPN would have liked.

Runs. And a bunch of them. Scored by the Rockies. Do it.

Go Rockies!

Got a shot

Maybe Redman will have one of his solid outings. Pelfrey is hardly automatic.

Isn’t there anybody better than Redman that we can call up?

by Tuloo on Jul 13, 2008 6:26 PM MDT reply actions

Went to the game yesterday

best seats I’ve sat in for a MLB game, second row behind first base. Was fun watching Mets fans act befuddled by Ubaldo. But holy cow our offense stinks right now. I think Pedro was topping out at 85 on his fastball. Only contentious point of the game was when Baker missed that play at first base in the sixth. Baker chants were ringing down from the stands, and it got quite annoying. I would be quite amenable to exploring any trades we need to make to improve our ‘09 club, because our road form is wooooeful this year…

And right on cue Redman gives up a gopherball.

wow

I go play fetch with the dog and we are losing 3-nil. 3-4 road trip would be acceptable, 2-5 would not. Can we call up Morales yet?

that depends

can Morales retire batters yet? last I checked, his ERA w/ the Sox was a shade under 7.

Didn't take long...

...for this game to get out of reach. That’s three times as many runs as the Rox are capable of scoring right now.

So..

Koshansky either hits a homer or strikes out….like….literally.

Next time

we find ourselves on national TV (which probably won’t be again this season, of course) it would be nice if we showed up with more than 3 major league players to put in the starting lineup. I mean, we have no chance with this squad.

by Teekalong on Jul 13, 2008 8:31 PM MDT reply actions

The Rocks have some pretty good hitters in this lineup...

It’s suprising they are being shutout with a lineup that includes:
Torrealba .247
Pods .217
Koshansky .133
Nix .115

If they would let Pods go

after Taveras and Spillborghs get back, he could come on as a pinch hit specialist. But, if it’s as an audition, he shouldn’t come up over Stewart.

by David OhNo on Jul 13, 2008 8:46 PM MDT up reply actions

Stewart hasn't succeeded at the major league level...

Why should Colonel be left behind? I haven’t seen him play, just looking at the numbers this year. Good fielding percentage.

by Charlie77 on Jul 13, 2008 8:47 PM MDT up reply actions

Huge difference

Colonel has been about two to three years older than his comp the last two years, and he lacks power and a position.

by PioneerSkies on Jul 13, 2008 8:46 PM MDT up reply actions

Bit ambitious

He is awfully young.

Fowler and Weathers are at AA and ready to make the leap.

by MADness on Jul 13, 2008 8:48 PM MDT up reply actions

BUT

what about moving Chacin to AA. That’s a big step in a pitchers progression. I’d like to see him learn there for 1/2 a year.. He’s still young, and thus fragile, so I wouldn’t want to push him toooooo far, but he’s dominated Low A, and now High A.

Thought Clint Hurdle should be fired before it was cool.

Holliday or Atkins...

One of them needs to be traded while there is still value, and there are plenty of prospects on the farm to fill the gap (Stewart, Sullivan, Fowler, Colonel, etc)

The Rocks

need to unload the garbage. Yorvit, Pods, Taveras come to mind. Be careful to make deals as a salary dump (a Monfort favorite). Try to make deals to make the team better. Unloading for prospects with ML talent may be tempting but not the solution.

I say bring up Fowler and let him play everyday. If you can get some ML pitching for Holliday make the deal. Otherwise forget it. The central issue is dumping the garbage and gettinmg some starting pitching arms. This Redmon, JDLR, Rusch, Wells, Towers, Harrikila, Dessens crap does not cut it.

by PinchHitLancePainter on Jul 13, 2008 8:54 PM MDT reply actions

I agree, pitching is a need....

but so is hitting, especially if we trade Holliday away. We have a team batting average of .258 right now, by far the worst offense in Rockies history, worse than even the 1993 inaugural Rockies. And the sad truth is that, other than Fowler, we don’t have any meaningful pospect help in the minors.

by GoRoxGo on Jul 13, 2008 8:56 PM MDT up reply actions

The current team is a sub 500 team

take away the streak and they have been this formula for years. Good at home, horrible on the road. Road games is where the pitching issues come to life. You cannot fall behind by 4 runs on the road and win. The big issue here is outside of Cook and the occasional good start by Jimenez we have nothing. The other three stiffs record on the road is horrendous. You do not content by being over 20 games under 500 on the road.

Face it, this is a bad team. I said it here after game 10 they were in trouble and it has been downhill ever since.

by PinchHitLancePainter on Jul 13, 2008 9:01 PM MDT reply actions

Home vs Road splits

I really wish some one could address WHY this team has has such terrible, and dramatic home and road splits over the life of this franchise. What we are seeing this year, is not unique, it’s been the norm. Now, no team does as well on the road as they do at home, but the Rockies splits are just amazing.

I don’t think this team is as good as it looks at home, nor as bad as it looks on the road. But this issue, is huge for this organization to figure out if it ever want to succeed

Thought Clint Hurdle should be fired before it was cool.

by Redhawk on Jul 13, 2008 9:14 PM MDT up reply actions

I have to agree

The “Coors Field Factor” was blamed for many years, and maybe rightfully so. But all these years later, the humidor, etc., that excuse doesn’t cut it. Don’t know what it will take to figure it out, but some sort of enlightenment needs to happen sooner than later.

Put me out of my misery. Please!

by Russ Oates on Jul 13, 2008 9:36 PM MDT reply actions

I just hope...

the Rockies aren’t on national TV any more. It’s really humiliating to have the entire nation watch what they’ve become.

by BroJB on Jul 13, 2008 9:42 PM MDT up reply actions

The good news.....

is that the Rockies are in the NL West. IF we can somehow strengthen the rotation, bullpen, and offense (i.e. the entire team), then it is not too difficult to become the top team in the division. The problem with our model is that it’s too dependent on homegrown talent, and ownership will not pay for IMPACT talent on the free agent market. So, if we don’t have help on the farm, we have to make do with a bunch of rejects from other teams, or fringe major leaguers from our own organization.

I just want the Rockies to win the NL West one time before I’m too old to enjoy it. After this season, they will be 0 for 16 in that quest.
