Umm

Cook, if you blow this, it will be our second missed shot at a four-game sweep with you pitching the finale. That is not what we expect from our ace. Cut it out.

rockies-phillies discussed holliday and fuentes trade

according to ken rosenthal the two teams were working on a trade before the philies got joe blanton. he thinks it would have been something like

“For Holliday and Fuentes, the Phillies probably would need to part with a package of Shane Victorino, left-hander J.A. Happ, Class AA right-hander Carlos Carrasco and Class AA catcher Lou Marson. Another of their better prospects, Class AA lefty Antonio Bastardo, has a slight tear in his labrum.”
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8356892/Aging-Manny-may-be-expendable-for-Red-Sox

anyone know anything about those prospects? sounds like the talks have died down but would that have been a good trade? i love matt holliday and really want the rockies to sign him long term but i just dont see that happening so if they do trade him it better be for a great package of players that are either MLB ready or very close

by purplesocks on Jul 20, 2008 1:29 PM MDT reply actions

Right then.

Maybe they don’t want to play for a long time, and have decided to make things as quick as possible by getting no hit.

Are people more afraid of the Dodgers or the Dbacks for the division?

I keep thinking the Dodgers will put it together, and Arizona’s bullpen continues to get ravaged by injuries…But we could gain some games on LA this week.

Second half run?

by moomacher on Jul 20, 2008 2:44 PM MDT reply actions

Afraid of contending

I am afraid that both teams will continue to suck enough that the Rockies will convince themselves that they can win the division this year and they will make foolish long-term decisions based upon that mistaken belief.

by MADness on Jul 20, 2008 2:51 PM MDT up reply actions

well

maybe a slight bout of false contention will make other teams a little more willing to pay the price for Fuentes

but…....what happens when Helton gets healthy….umm…..Healthier?

Thought Clint Hurdle should be fired before it was cool.

by Redhawk on Jul 20, 2008 2:51 PM MDT reply actions

Guilty conscience

I keep hoping that he isn’t seriously injured but that it lingers and he misses some more time. :(

by MADness on Jul 20, 2008 2:52 PM MDT up reply actions

Best Case for the Rockies

sadly, is if he’s really hurt, and can’t play anymore. I’d assume the contract has an insurance policy on it. Helton gets paid, and it frees up a ton of money for the Rockies to go to guys that can still hit, like Atkins or Holliday

Thought Clint Hurdle should be fired before it was cool.

by Redhawk on Jul 20, 2008 2:54 PM MDT up reply actions

According to Hurdle

both Helton and Spilly =( are a long way from coming back, so I guess we cross that bridge when we come to it, likely in mid-to-late August.

Free Casey Weathers!!!!

by Silverblood on Jul 20, 2008 2:53 PM MDT up reply actions

I dont know

but something tells me that Helton may have juiced, I mean….besides Andruw Jones who has been THAT dramatic of power reduction? He is a great hitter, still almost always leads the league in OBP, and walks…but there is always that wondering about him. I know he has been accused a few times, and nobody really buys it…just my thoughts. I have become paranoid about players juicing….

Remembering Dustin Mohr's glory years!

by MohrPlease on Jul 20, 2008 2:55 PM MDT up reply actions

It also has to do with

the humidor installation and getting older. Players, including Helton, decline as this happens, and he had the benefit of playing in Coors Canaveral for quite a while.

Free Casey Weathers!!!!

by Silverblood on Jul 20, 2008 2:56 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah but...

that year he hit 47 homers, quite a few of them were away from Coors. Yes, that obviously has played a role for sure. Age too. But look at Griffey Jr, he is much older than Helton and can light up the baseball occasionally, and I would say that Griffey and Helton having two of the better swings in baseball…but Girffey is always swinging for the fences…and helton is not, like I said…I dont know

Remembering Dustin Mohr's glory years!

by MohrPlease on Jul 20, 2008 2:59 PM MDT up reply actions

I think Helton Juiced

but I think every player juiced during that era. I figure I’m right FAR more than I’m wrong painting with that brush

by Russ Oates on Jul 20, 2008 3:29 PM MDT reply actions

We need to sweep the Dodgers, too

Seriously, the Rockies must dig themselves out of this 10-15 games below .500 hole if they are ever to contend in the West. A couple of times they’ve got it down to 11 games below .500, then there’s been a lousy road trip and they’re right back to 15 games below or more. We need to win 7, 8…10 games in a row. Sweep the Dodgers..

P.S. -Just saw where L.A. had a 5-run 9th late this afternoon and beat the Snakes 6-5. Rockies 6 games back.

by DeepPurple on Jul 20, 2008 5:21 PM MDT up reply actions

Really a nice job

done by our bullpen throughout the series….only 2 hits and a walk allowed by the relief corps. Pretty impressive!!

by jimmyski on Jul 20, 2008 3:29 PM MDT reply actions

Bullpen

The bullpen is great when they only need to pitch 3 innings max.

Gives the manager a lot of flexibility as well as allowing him to ‘hide’ the weaker pitchers in the bullpen by not using them in anything remotely resembling a high leverage situation.
