Game #101: Stults vs. Wells

Los Angeles Dodgers at Colorado Rockies, Jul 21, 2008 7:05 PM MDT

Kip Wells makes his return to the majors tonight, his first start since the second Opening Day and his first appearance since April 28. It goes without saying, but a good start in Wells' return would be huge. The Dodgers are 2-1 at Coors Field this season and 6-3 overall against the Rockies. It would be nice to see that at 6-6 after Wednesday's afternoon game (but I'm getting ahead of myself).

Let's see the Rockies get the better of Eric Stults tonight!

Go Rockies!

Starting

for the Dodgers tomorrow will be Clayton Kershaw, who will be recalled from Double-A to do so. Jason Johnson had been scheduled to start.

Kip "What the hell?" Wells

I live out of market but hear from many sources outside of the Rockies community about how stocked the farm system is. Is there no one who can deliver a performance equal to that of Wells such as Baker?

Another question..why would Hurdle leave Wells in that long?

What’s with the fail theme. Is that an inside joke?

InToddwetrust

by InToddwetrust on Jul 21, 2008 7:57 PM MDT reply actions

Can't answer the first question

But as to the other two…

Hurdle apparently operates on a different plane than the rest of the world. You’ve no doubt seen the term HurdleLogic here on the Row. It’s all we can figure.

As for the Fail theme…well, it’s not really an inside joke, just the general theme of this lost season. Much failure all around.

Of the NL teams and especially our West rivals

I hate the Dodgers the most….even more than the Padres and Giants.

Nope

I can mildly tolerate the Dodgers, but hate the Pads and Giants with black loathing. The Dbacks I am very ambivalent about, generally tending toward dislike.

by dogs on Jul 21, 2008 9:13 PM MDT reply actions

I'm OK with....

....mediocre 4th and 5th starters. I mean, guys like Brian Bohannon or Josh Fogg never shut anyone down, but they at least kept you in games. The problem with Wells, DLR and Redman is that they get blown up and suddenly you find yourself down by 7 or 8 runs.

Is major league pitching so thin that we can’t find anybody who can give you six innings, allowing 4 runs? Really? Nobody out there?

by BroJB on Jul 21, 2008 9:14 PM MDT reply actions

Oh....

...and the answer to my question is not “Josh Towers”. Although I expect we’ll be seeing him soon enough.

by BroJB on Jul 21, 2008 9:15 PM MDT up reply actions

Yes to the thin part

every team except the Red Sox want a #5 starter. But what the Rockies refuse to do…is pay for it if we can’t develop it. Throw in Francis, Morales and Hirsch just going to hell…...and you end up with the rotating door of cast offs….which is why they were cast offs.

DLR has great stuff…just not consistent….does anyone think the Brewers and Royals didn’t see the great stuff? But the Rockies think…..no WE can change him.

Something to keep you occupied....

while you wait for this nonsense to end:

Have a gander at this, and relive some glorious memories from Rockies’ past.

Mac Suzuki! Ron Gant! Zach Day! Jacob Cruz! Benny Agbayani! Jorge Brito! and all the others who have brought us so much joy over the years.

Plus jar your memory with such “That guy played for the Rockies?” stars as Brian McRae and Matt Nokes.

And, as a special treat, try to find a worse pitcher in Rockies history than Kip Wells.

From this list....

I have compiled my all-time “Guys who didn’t suck even though the team sucked, and deserve to be remembered fondly but probably aren’t remembered at all” list. Enjoy this trip down memory lane.

John Vander Wal
Jeffrey Hammonds
Darren Holmes
Chris Jones
Mike Kingery
Nelson Liriano
Quinton McCracken
Steve Reed
Jason Bates
Roger Bailey
Armando Reynoso
Terry Shumpert
Danny Sheaffer
Mark Thompson

We obviously aren't going to win every game to finish the season...

But I do get the feeling the management is going to start weeding out the fools, Redman, Wells, De La Rosa and others.

If we are gonna lose with a bad starting rotation., might as well give as many try-outs as possible.
