Game #104: Cook vs Volquez
Colorado Rockies at Cincinnati Reds, Jul 25, 2008 5:10 PM MDT
The Reds have to hold onto a team of the future tag for one more season at least, as they've fallen to a double digit deficit in the Central this season. It's the cruel luck of baseball that the Rockies, who are five games behind Cincinnati, are in a better position to try for the playoffs this year. Not that our hope is any more realistic, we just have the fortune of playing in a division where it seems as though anything's possible.
Of course, once again, to make dreams of another playoff run practical, the Rox need to take advantage of an opportunity to make up ground on the road (they really are on the road this time, I checked) something that they've proven incapable of thus far.
I'm hoping my own presence at the GABP brings a little luck tonight.
Go Rockies!

Um, the lineup
widget has a problem tonight. Torrealba is not starting at SS, Tulo is.

I was about to have an aneurysm
Thank you for clearing that up. I mean, it was the furthest thing from sense, but then again, that IS Hurdle’s trademark.

When I first saw it
I figured that Clint’s love for/desire to get Yorvie in the lineup had finally gotten the better of him and he’d gone completely insane.
Free Casey Weathers!!!!
So, you wouldn't
have given Clint an “A” for creativity if Torrealba really was starting at SS?

Yes, it's my plan to sabotage the Rockies.

Don't ask why.
It’s much too long of a story, but my latest project is reworking the song “Little Girls” from Annie the musical so it works for this team. See: sig.
Not too hard, though, don’t hold your breath.
How I hate GIDP, RISP, and each little grounder. I'd have cracked years ago if it weren't for my sense of humor! (With apologies to Annie, the musical)
2-1 on a broken bat.

I can't believe
someone else still remembers his REAL name when he’s doing well.

You aren't supposed to let GO, Chris
Chris looked so worried as his bat went flying into the stands. :)

Diving catch
threw the runner out a first from a sitting position. Awesome play.

Hah!

Stupid cable box
My cable box is acting up again. Getting a blank screen. :(
Hopefully it is working again later so that I can catch the catch on the post-game wrap-up or SportsCenter.
Yankees trade?
SI.com has a banner saying that there is a reported trade of Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte to the Yankees for 4 prospects including Jose Tabata and Ross Ohlendorf.
Well, Nady and Marte did get traded
I saw that on MLB. I didn’t know that the team they had gone to was revealed, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if it were the Yanks, who get their OF and LHP in one fell swoop.
Free Casey Weathers!!!!
Package deal
Makes it hard to figure out what kind of value the Pirates got but atleast they finally got someone (and held onto Bay) and also it takes Nady and, more importantly, Marte off of the market.
I want to say it's a weak trade
but that would also suggest that I think Nady is having something other than a fluke year (no it’s BABIP flukey).
Tabata has only one “skill” and that’s age, eventually it too will cease to impress.
Ohlendorf is actually a solid pickup by Pittsburgh, but I’m not sure about Coke or Kontos.
Bottom line, it has name power in the top prospects, but as a player, I’m not sure Tabata is worth it.
Let me instead put it this way:
Ryan Spilborghs is a superior player to Xavier Nady…
... of course you could also say this:
Ryan Spilborghs is the most underrated outfielder in baseball.
Obliques are bad injuries
as far as having an affect on offensive performance, so it’s probably best to give him all the time he needs to keep the injury from lingering.
Looks like
Brian Fuentes will not be traded to the Yankees…

That's probably okay
other than the idea of reuniting high school teammates, I’m not sure Ian Kennedy is in the same league as our other “targets.”
Matt went chasing and failed.

And so does Brad.
That was irritating. Thanks for reminding me we’re on the road, guys, we were doing so well at forgetting.

I think we've found the only manager in baseball
who loves the sac bunt more than Hurdle: Dusty Baker.
I lol’ed at the bunt attempt by Dunn.

Hey, remember
that Baker doesn’t like to clog the bases.

But this IS the guy
who on multiple occasions has called for the bunt…. only to have the execution fail and the guy doing it to settle for a homer instead.
Free Casey Weathers!!!!
Could be worse
Hurdle doesn’t tear up young arms like Dusty.
We could always have it worse.
I'm pretty sure that if we get Arroyo
we won’t get the dependable workhorse, but rather the one that Dusty has ridden to hell and back. I kinda feel bad for his arm, and especially coming over to our organization, which of course has SO much success with pitchers.
Free Casey Weathers!!!!
Still nice to have his glove
but it would be nice if he would de-Yorvit himself.

Way to go the opposite way.

Aaron Cook
seriously does it all. He bakes, cleans, cooks, washes, plays the harpsichord, viola, and hammer dulcimer, while triple-majoring in biochemistry, neuroscience, and nanotechnology, is a whiz at interior design, reinvented the wheel, made cars more gas efficient, reduces carbon emissions, is a ginger god elsewhere (if you know what I mean) knows pi to 1,200 digits, and can do a one-handed cartwheel.
Also, he’s pretty good at pitching.

a nice diving catch to end the inning.

Willy T
His offensive struggles overshadow just how good he is becoming defensively.
Last year he seemed like a slightly raw defender who relied on blazing speed. This year you are seeing some great jumps and some spectacular catches.
Simply put – Spilly doesn’t reach a lot of the balls that Willy routinely gets to – let alone the ones that he has to dive for like that.
Hell of a throw out.

How good
is our 1-2 punch looking now? If Franchise can get back his 2006-07 form, we have a surprisingly good rotation.

Also
a belated congrats to Cookie not only for his 13th win, but on the birth of his third child and second son, Colton Jeremiah Cook, on Thursday.

Stewart just got...
Baseball Tonight’s #1 WebGem of the night….actually for both plays but especially the second gem throwing from his butt.
Amazing play
Watch the concentration to even track the ball coming in and get his glove on it.
Then the throw was obviously spectacular.
Morales had a good outing
as well tonight. He went 6 2/3 and didn’t give up a run, he did have 4 BB’s, but 5 K’s. I hope that article about him hitting bottom is right on. I would love to see him get back to his old form.
Hey Rox Girl
You were our good luck charm tonight! Hope you had a great time. Give us a report tomorrow.
