Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Ok, You're Dan O'Dowd, what do you do?

Do you keep Fuentes or move him for a Double A starter?  Do you unload Jason Hircsh and Franklin Morlaes for a proven major league starter?  Do you stand pat?  If it were your job, what would you do in the next four days?  I would try and trade Jason Hirsch and Seth Smith to the Reds for Bronson Arroyo, assuming they are willing to eat nine million of the contract over the next two seasons.  Arroyo is a major upgrade over Wells and De Los Santos, and Cincy plays in a Philadelphiaesque joke of a ballpark.  He would help us in the next two seasons.

Eat. Drink. Be Merry. But the above FanPost does not necessarily reflect the attitudes, opinions, or views of Purple Row's staff (unless, of course, it's written by the staff [and even then, it still might not]).

If I was Dealin' Dan,

I would stay far away from Bronson Arroyo. Why trade Hirsh for an older, more expensive and less effective pitcher? Throwing Seth Smith into such a deal makes even less sense. Arroyo may be an upgrade over Wells or De Los Santos, but he is not an upgrade over a healthy Jason Hirsh.

Next, I make sure that Matt Holliday stays on the team, at least for the rest of the season. This makes trading for Justin Duchscherer or Roy Halladay difficult if not impossible. Acquiring Halladay might just be wishful thinking anyway. Still, keeping Holliday in the lineup gives the Rockies the best chance at making a run for the division title.

I don’t trade Atkins either. He is our starting 1B, whether Helton is healthy or not.

Lastly, I’ll trade Brian Fuentes, but only if the price is right. Keeping Fuentes doesn’t hurt the team or its chances. But if I can land an Ian Kennedy or Anibal Sanchez-level SP, I’ll do the deal. The other team might not part with a B-level prospect in addition to such a SP, but I won’t trade Fuentes for anything less.

Arroyo

Arroyo is 31, not ancient for a pitcher. Baseball Prospectus last week listed him as a guy to buy low on, as he has fared worse than his stats would show. He strikes out nearly 8 per 9 innings, walking just over 3 per 9, so has a very good ratio. (Better than 2 to 1 in K’s to BB’s is the dividing line for a decent arm.) Besides a couple of real disaster starts, he will usually give you 6 or 7 innings. His (xERA) expected ERA, based on his peripheral indicators is 4.56, more than a run under his actual ERA. I think getting a quality #3 starting pitcher in Arroyo is way better than Jason Hirsh (not HIRSCH!), in my opinion. Hirsh hasn’t really had time to establish himself in Colorado. Half a year last season, then injured. This year, toiling at the Springs, but doing poorly. Arroyo, if we can get him, along with Francis coming back, Cook doing so well, U-Ball improving by leaps and bounds, would give us 4 really good SP to solidify the Rockies rotation.

Arroyo may not be old

But he is on the wrong side of 30, doesn’t have the best home run control, and would probably be too expensive.

Alright

then send Morales and keep Hirsch and there is your rotation next season. I do not see it with Hirsch. He will be a four or five guy his whole career. You have to send prospects to get established ML players. Pick your poison, but the only way this team stays in this race is by adding another starter from outside the organization.

I Would

Have made more of an impact at the deadline! Trade Fuentes, get a second bagger, or let Stewart start earlier on. Maybe give Baker more playing time. I would keep Holliday and shop G-At, even though he is cool. Maybe get a few more specs, and strike next year. But, the trading deadline has passed. Lets hope they can pick it up. But, they are still in the race!!! Go Rockies!!! And hi Rockiesfan, I did not know you posted here
