Game #108: Rusch vs. Herrera

Colorado Rockies at Pittsburgh Pirates, Jul 29, 2008 5:05 PM MDT

Yoslan Herrera failed to make it out of the second inning in his July 19 start against the Rockies, allowing seven runs. Making his third career start a few days later, he tamed the Padres by yielding no runs over six innings.

A day earlier, Rusch picked up his third win by allowing two runs over 5 2/3 innings. A few days later, he picked up his fourth victory (and third in a row) in a close 5-3 game. More of the same from Rusch tonight, right? And more of July 19 for Herrera.

Go Rockies!

Taveras starts with a single.

What’s the over/under on Herrera innings pitched?

Two innings and he faces

two batters in the third without recording an out.

You may be right

That was a tidy 29 pitch inning by Herrera. Okay, maybe he makes it through three innings. Maybe.

How quickly you forget that

Snell had 25 through the first yesterday and look what happened there!

Very true

Our BABIP was so high on him early, though. Snell couldn’t miss a bat for two innings, but Herrera can’t find a strike.

Unfortunately

that’s the way we started out last night too.

On the other hand, I think Herrera hates us. Which is not a bad thing, considering he probably hates us for kicking his ass.

Which is why

We win 9-7, after Rusch goes 5.1 and 5 earned; Kipper gives up three hits, and we stagger to the 7th when the Corpas/Buchholz/Fuentes holy trinity shuts it down.

Sigh

The players blew the inning but giving away an out to start the inning didn’t set a very good tone (or leave a lot of margin for error).

Repeat performance

Giving away outs (and innings) on the basepaths, poor defense and a bullpen implosion.

I had to turn the game off last night – hopefully they do something in this half inning to calm me down a bit and let me keep the game on.

by MADness on Jul 29, 2008 6:58 PM MDT reply actions

This is looking better all of a sudden.

Baker, Holliday, Hawpe due up, needing 2 runs. This should be fun.

by JBauer6430 on Jul 29, 2008 6:58 PM MDT reply actions

Did anyone see this in Renck's game notes today?

“While reluctant to talk publicly, several players said privately they would be upset if Fuentes were dealt.”

Ummmmm…....You guys are 11 games under five hundred 2/3 of the way though the season. I would say management is justified if they want to make a move, considering how badly the team has played for most of the season.

Second half run?

by moomacher on Jul 29, 2008 6:58 PM MDT reply actions

Who cares?

They haven’t exactly earned the right to complain about a shake up.

If the Rockies were leading the division and management moved useful players from the big league roster then the complaints would be valid.

Wow….these last 2 games really show how far down we really are, and how any run is so far away. Drop 2 road games against the Pirates….and all looks lost again.

And it also shows me how bad I wanted to see a pennant race, cause I’m bummed.

Thought Clint Hurdle should be fired before it was cool.

by Redhawk on Jul 29, 2008 8:03 PM MDT reply actions

With all due respect

are people actually surprised/upset that we lost two road games started by VDLS and Rusch? I mean, its a miracle that the games were competitive. (and I know they didn’t take the loss, each game lost by the pen in the middle innings).

This pitching staff is a joke, and has been since Game 1. And the “moves” to rectify the situation have been nothing more than pure desperation. Until the front office finds a way to put a respectable staff together, this team is not a contender, no matter how close we are to the top of the division.
