Game #110: De la Rosa vs Sanchez
Colorado Rockies @ Florida Marlins
Sanchez was desired by the Rockies if the Marlins were to trade for Brian Fuentes, now it's time to make the Fish have immediate second thoughts for rejecting that deal. No facing Manny Ramirez in this series, either, although in that case it's just putting off the inevitable.
Go Rockies!

No deadline trades
Would anybody agree with me if I said that the Rockies didn’t need to make a move, that all they need is Francis/Hirsh/Morales to get healthy & effective?

I agree…nothing needed to be done, but it would have been nice to get a good 5th starter and give up some of our heavy farm system.

I would agree
Though we really need to get Francis AND either Hirsh or Morales (Hirsh slightly more likely at this point) to get going.
There were no starters out there worth what was being asked. However, I think we can easily pick Fogg off waivers in a few days, and give him a start or two. I wouldn’t get my hopes up, but there’s no reason to think he’d be worse than the unholy Redman/Wells/Rusch trinity, and a bit of reason to think he’d be better.
I retract a bit of what I’ve said on Rusch, but he’s really no better than Fogg.

I’ll even go as far as to say any one of the three. I do hope they make the best of the two draft picks they should get for Fuentes (assuming he’s not resigned) though. Sounds like those two picks are probably worth more than what anybody was offering in trade, plus we get Brian’s services for a couple more months. So no complaints from me today, aside from the minor annoyance of losing Arias to waivers.

I agree...
The Rockies dont need Josh Fogg. Once Francis is back the rotation, you’ll see Jimenez, De La Rosa, Cook, Francis and Rusch as the rotation, though not in that order. Morales you wont see until he improves his current situation and someone in the bullpen goes down to injury. The rest of the schedule is in our favor and if the Rockies are 3-4 games behind at the end of August, September is going to be exciting with 15 of the first 18 games at Coors Field.

No
the Rockies took him off the 40 man roster when they called up Cory Sulivan and added him to the 40 man roster. When they take a guy off the 40 man the player has to clear waivers. Jason Nix cleared waivers twice this year.
I guess we can give players away at least. Arias was no star, but I thought he was an ok BP arm.

Is it a bit early...
....for Hurdle to pencil Tulo in at #2 in the lineup?
I know he’s been hot and swinging the bat well, but part of that could be because he’s been in a lower pressure spot.

Has been catching JDLR. I remember last time JDLR pitched, Jeff and Jack were saying that while Clint doesn’t really like to get in situations where a pitcher has a personal catcher, the two have been working really well together (it didn’t sound like only a language thing).
So while I generally agree with you, I think it has more to do with the pitcher in this case.

Random question
As a rockies fan would you trade our history for the Marlins? Are two World Champions worth the total fire sales and ridiculously low budgets…And here’s an amazing stat to help you ponder:
Rockies 1993-2008 1164-1313 0.470
Marlins (1993-2008) 1169-1302 0.473
Five win difference in 15 years!
Second half run?
by moomacher on Jul 31, 2008 5:21 PM MDT 0 recs
I wouldn't trade it for anything
World Series titles aside, the history of the Marlins as a franchise, is shameful. Threats to move year after year, the worst budgets and payrolls, no real fan base to speak of. Sure they rented a few players for their 1997 run as nothing but a calculated gamble to get a boondoggle domed stadium.
No, they may have a better record in terms of progress once in the playoffs, but don’t forget, both clubs have made the postseason the same number of times. If we’d have somehow won it last fall, we wouldn’t really even have this conversation.

That's the key, though
“if we’d have somehow won it last fall”. We didn’t, and Florida did (twice). We didn’t even manage to win a game. They have two rings. The Cubs don’t have any for a century, the Dodgers have exactly one playoff game win since the Marlins were created. Sure it would suck to be jerked around so much, but the glory of those titles would make it all fall away. And its not like our history is littered with close calls and awesome Septembers…

Yup, we have no rings, but...
The Marlins have no history, no continuity, no sense of attachment. 11 years removed from their 1st World Series, and most people (Purple Row readers notwithstanding, of course), probably can’t name one player from that 1997 Marlins club.
I mean, would you rather have the franchise history of the Marlins, or of either the Cubs or Dodgers.

The Marlins have fans?
Rhetorical, sure, but given their average attendance through the years, certainly not many, never mind how much more populous the Miami-Dade County area is than here.

What difference does it make?
Are we less fans of the Rockies than Dodger fans? Yankees? Hell, I suspect the Rockies would easily fall within the bottom 5 of overall fanbases in the league. I don’t feel like less of a fan for that. Do you?

Maybe I'm not making my point clearly enough
There are very few fans of the Marlins…very few. So while those very few may remember a couple players from the 1997 team, it almost doesn’t matter. That franchise’s history has driven so many people away from fandom that having won two rings hasn’t mattered.

That is an interesting question
but I don’t think it took me more than 5 seconds to decide for the Fish. The WS last year was unreal, and we got crushed. I can’t imagine how it would feel to win one of those things, let alone winning two. And the fire sales certainly are lame, but not too far different from just never really signing anyone expensive for 5 years and not being competitive.

I'm personally of two minds
obviously the rockies are in a better place from a long term franchise perspective. Consider attendance so far this year. We are averaging double the attendance they are. But the Marlins seem much better at getting rid of veterans and reloading than we do. Less sentimental.

Are you kidding?
I would trade my right arm for a local team that won two championships in its first 11 years of existence, as the Marlins have done. They’ve also had far better homegrown talent come up over the years, from Josh Beckett to Miguel Cabrera. What a great franchise the Rockies would be here in Denver, in our venue, with our fans, if we had been 2-time champions. We would still be selling out half the games.

I'll just say
That I wouldn’t trade last Sept. and Rocktober for love nor money. Yeah, we got our butts kicked in the Series. So?
We lived history last fall. Not with a bunch of rentals, but with our home-growns largely. It was the most exciting period in sports that I’ve ever lived through. The Fish can have their rings. We’ll get ours someday. But I’ll never ever forget the fall of 2007.
Put me out of my misery. Please!
