No regrets
about staying home from tonight’s fireworks on a whim (thanks to rain that never really materialized). Watching those last couple innings was a spectacular substitute.

What a night...
Also just talked to Silverblood, who has assured me that she is alive and well…tired and with no voice, but ok. She is in her element…collecting tons of sunflower seed shells and blades of outfield grass…And yes, the fireworks are nice, but THESE Rockies are even better!!!

Fangraph
The win expectancy graph for this game just makes me giggle. You can see it here. The Rockies were not once better than an even-money bet to win that game until Atkins singled to tie it up in the ninth.
I’m going to the game tomorrow night – but 20 years from now I’ll be lying to my kids and telling them I was at this one.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.

That graph...
was amazing and did produce even more squeals of giggle and glee from me about this win!

What. A. Game.
I’m serious. What. A. Game. Being at that one almost makes up for missing the Rocktober goodness last year. I was at last year’s 17-7 blowout of the Mets on the Fourth, and wasn’t thinking that this one was going to beat it. Squeaky and I had gotten tickets for the sections that were allowed to go on the field for the fireworks (we had to sneak down last year) but since they were already sold out, we ended up with two single tickets—one in 151 and one in 153. We were having none of this sitting apart crap, so we just sat down in 151 together and began moving each time someone came back to claim their seats. We must have moved at least five times in the LF bleachers trying to find somewhere we could sit together.
The game started. Reynolds sucked. We foresaw a very long night but weren’t going anywhere since the fireworks were going to be the good part. But the weirdest thing happened around the fifth, and our fourth or fifth seat change. The lady behind me tapped me on the shoulder and said, “Do you go to school in New York?” I said, “Yes!” She said, “Do you remember sitting next to me at the Mets game?” I said, ”.... Oh my God, I do!”
Weirdly enough, it was the one other Rockies fan in Shea Stadium that I met in April, on April 14 I think. I mentioned then that I found one other Rockies fan in the whole place and we happened to sit next to each other in the upper deck at Shea Stadium. But believe it or not, there she was three months and 1600 miles later. Small world.
And I know it sounds crazy, but when it was 7-1 and things were already looking bleak, I just kind of had a feeling. I thought to myself, “It’s someone else’s turn to fail for a change. We’re gonna win.” I seriously doubted this when Bowers and The Viz did their best to just take up space on the planet and the deficit went to 13-4, but when Spilly hit his second HR of the game to push us to 13-10, I definitely revisited that feeling. When Atkins went yard to bring us within 1, I believed. When it went to 17-12 in the top of the seventh, I dunno. I just…. kinda felt it.
The bottom of the seventh was just insane. When Holliday came up with the bases loaded, the place was absolutely just screaming, including Squeaky and I. We were, in fact, REALLY screaming by now, just yelling our lungs out, and the whole crowd was behind him. I said to Squeaky, “This place wants an excuse to go nuts.” The Marlins had just put a four-spot on the board in the top of the seventh, of course. But when Matt was up… you kinda felt it coming. Moonshot. Delirium. I think I lost my voice shrieking and dancing around in the bleachers, high-fiving, roaring, just believing. It was an amazing, amazing feeling.
The only inning in which the Rockies didn’t score was the bottom of the eighth, and then Bucky, who is a stinking machine, came in and naturally recovered from his lone hiccup last night. Then… the bottom of the ninth.
Barmes hit a grounder with eyes. Holliday hit a flare that fell. Atkins laced one into center to officially tie it up, and Coors really was at the breaking point of madness. Squeaky and I were standing on the LF concourse not far from where Iannetta and Spilly launched those two MONSTROUS shots (we were an average of 10 rows up, and those balls hit the Toyota sign at the back of the concourse). Then Bake hit a weak grounder that should have been two, but Ramirez dropped the throw, everyone was safe, and…. you know what happened next. CDI came up, the ball went into center, and Coors went apeshit.
And even that still wasn’t done yet. Squeaky and I, after screaming, hopping up and down, high-fiving everyone in sight, and screaming some more, joined the line heading (slowly) down to the field. The game took four hours and by the time we were finally down on the field, it was 10:40 or so. But we took off our sandals, walked barefoot on the warning track dirt, and eventually settled on the cool grass of LF not far from Matt’s little pile of sunflower seed shells. We danced barefoot on the outfield and took pictures, then lay down and counted with everyone else as the stadium lights went out, the countdown began, and fireworks exploded brilliant against the heavens.
It was a great show. Maybe 15 minutes or so. But I never wanted it to end. I was lying there, arms outstretched on the grass next to my sister, who is also my best friend and partner in Rockies obsession. The fireworks were gorgeous. I had just personally witnessed the biggest comeback in my team’s history. I wiggled my toes into the damp grass—I collected a few blades and some of Matt’s sunflower seed shells. I listened to the music. I was in my element.
Squeaky and I didn’t get home until midnight, after blasting our Rockies music all the way home. I have no voice and I am exhausted since I worked 38 hours this week prior to going to the game tonight. I have been leaping up and down and screaming all night. I was there. It was amazing. And yeah, I know you’re jealous. Mwahahahahaha.
We are all dead.

Wow.
Wow. Wow. Wow. WOW.
This game was the craziest game I’ve ever been to.
Call us crazy, but Silverblood and I were feeling “comeback” from the very beginning. Sure, it was ugly, and we weren’t quite sure we were right. We were busy amusing ourselves by betting dimes on the outcomes of various things (I owed her a dime after Matt swung on the first pitch, for example), and trying to find two seats together. I got two single tickets, one in 151 and one in 153, so we were constantly bopping around looking for two seats together. We’d sit an inning in one place and then have to move when the people came back. Oh well…it was fun.
In the first or second inning, there was this little bird hanging out in front of Matt, eating his sunflower seeds. Matt kept throwing seeds at him, which was really quite adorable. The bird left after awhile, but not before everyone in the bleachers took notice!
We were also amusing ourselves with the fact that Scott Olsen was still pitching. We thought they were in the Marlins dugout going “They’re not gonna score 13, leave him out there!!!” while in the bullpen they were like “WHERE’S THE PANIC BUTTON??!!?” Later on, of course, when the Rox were down 17-12, we thought they were still going “They’re not gonna score five runs,” and of course the bullpen had much more reason to be terrified and search for the panic button.
And Spilly’s homerun, the first one, went FAR over our heads. The Rox were down 13-4 by then, so we weren’t too excited, but I remember just watching the ball sail over my head and thinking “That’s interesting.” CDI’s HR was pretty amazing too, it hit the bottom of the Toyota sign thing over there.
And of course, fireworks. I love fireworks, and watching them on my back in the outfield grass in a dark Coors Field is just amazing. Too short!! But I never get tired of fireworks.
It took us forever to get out, but it doesn’t matter…we had an amazing time. I have rehearsal all day tomorrow, but there you have it. I wouldn’t have missed this one for the world.

This game was so amazing
that the late edition of Baseball Tonight included part of CLINT HURDLE’S POST-GAME PRESS CONFERENCE. Now that’s a rarity.
There is a bright side to the '08 season.
Barry Bonds & Roger Clemens are out of baseball.

That is amazing
I’m surprised they even noticed, since this weekend is
YANKEES
vs
RED SOX
so, of course, nothing else matters.

My favorite part
When it was 17-12 and the FSN broadcast crew said that they felt comfortable that the team would come back.
