Game #91: Redman vs. Sabathia
Colorado Rockies at Milwaukee Brewers, Jul 8, 2008 6:05 PM MDT
What better way is there to welcome Sabathia to the National League then to wallop him? Yeah, I know, many of you have your doubts about that. It could happen.
Go Rockies!
Have to whip up my own stat table for Sabathia since our stat provider doesn't have his Cleveland numbers available.

Anyone else surprised by this Harden/Gaudin trade?
Cubs basically traded spare parts in the other direction. Like the equivalent of Spilly/Barmes/McKenry/Morales?
The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season
I wouldn't call those players spare parts
In fact Oakland did quite well getting value from a guy that CANNOT stay healthy and has watched his velocity decline in recent weeks. Harden has ZERO reliability and very little in game durability. He basically can throw effectively for 90 pitches, and his start Sunday was merely so-so.
Gallagher- Number three type with good curve and innings eating body. Not the better single game competitor that Harden is, but over the course of a season, I’m not so sure Gallagher’s value wouldn’t be higher.
Murton- Not a huge fan, as he’s a borderline starter/fourth outfield type. Could add some punch to punchless A’s. If you got Murton for Gaudin, that’s a pretty equal trade.
Patterson- Highly underrated second base prospect that was good enough defensively at second and should have been left there by Chicago. Won’t be an all star, but could be pre Cleveland Josh Barfield with more speed.
Donaldson- Not having the best year, but may be my favorite piece for Beane here. Good bat speed and overall hitting profile for a catcher. Raw at the position and will need more work developing his defense, but should be a plus athletically. Could be Michael Barrett with better defense.
Surprised
that Beane didnt press for a little better offer somewhere else. Seems very favorable for the Cubs to me
Unless, of course
Harden breaks down again

possibly
since Sabathia is in the midst of a change of league/team….spotlight on him etc…..but unless redman finds jesus christ….we better score a lot of runs tonight

Where is Jeff?
Why is Jeff Baker not in the line up?
Gah
First time in a long time that not only am I free to join the game thread, but also watch the game, and my roommates are using the TV. Curses, foiled again!

Gameday has Redman's fastball at
84 mph, and his slider at 84 mph…
What he have here is what we call in my neighborhood the “gravity ball.” Where the ball doesn’t sink by break, but by the fact that it’s not going to reach home before the earth pulls it down.
I believe the pitch is also known as the “meatball” in some parts of the Milwaukee dugout.
Sometimes useful
for the fact that MLB hitters can’t adjust to 8th grade level stuff and actually don’t get hits (see, for instance, the last 3 hitters) but mostly noted for padding statistics.

I protest this call-up
because it lacks insight. With Helton down for an extended period, the Rockies have their best chance to take a look at an infield including BOTH Stewart and Atkins, which should provide both a short term and long term advantage.
Instead, it looks like we are using the “take turns” strategy.
This is the Rockies we are talking about.
So stuff you’d think make sense….yeah. It’s just kind of an alternate strategy.

OT: Rich Harden trade
I’ve been a big fan of Rich ever since he came up in 2001, and I am extremely happy to see that he’s healthy this year…so far. However, I am NOT happy to see him go to the Cubs. I like him in Oakland. We don’t need to face him. At first glance it looks like the Cubs really won on this deal…Harden and Gaudin are two very good young pitchers.
I agree
Slowly but surely, all the pitching talent we had our eyes on is being shipped to other teams. Garland, Haren, Harden…once someone snaps up Blanton, we’ll have missed the boat completely – in favor of the likes of Towers.
Blanton
is pretty gawdawful this year, so I don’t feel too bad about missing on him. Our pitching coach can’t fix our own pitchers, much less someone else’s.
Free Casey Weathers!!!!
Beane
No idea what he was thinking with this one. Harden signed through 2009, and this is all he can get?
Seriously
If Harden was available for that package, WE could have done it. Hell, he’s a terrible injury risk, but jeez, with the state our rotation is in, we need ANYTHING.

Hello
random thoughts:
1. Nice to see the Monfort cheapfest is in full swing. Other teams are sucking up the pitching talent while the pitching thin Rocks continue with their Green recycling program. I see Wells in the DO and Redmon, JDLR, etc. Josh Towers just a call away. When are they ever going to invest to give us some interest.
2. Welcome back Nix to a place you don’t belong. Career fill guy. I know the feeling as I have been there.
3. How many fill guys are we going to take a look at this next week. Joe Koshanky, Nix, Stewart. I fill a Cory Sullivan move just around the corner.
by PinchHitLancePainter on Jul 8, 2008 7:34 PM MDT reply actions
he couldn't possibly be a worse leadoff hitter than taveras...
well….. nevermind. Spilly should be hitting leadoff anyways.
I mentioned that earlier
about the Monforts needing to open up the pocketbooks and start increasing how much money we spend on players. Instead of snapping up the talent, we go looking for cheap deals, and now we’re realizing how poorly that ends for us. We go grab the Jason Grilli’s and Jorge De La Rosa’s of the world rather than the Dan Haren’s. We’re going to lose Holliday this upcoming year because we’d rather look for cheap players than pony up and lock up talent.
I don’t understand why the Monforts and the rest of the FO can’t just get over the Hampton/Neagle thing and start spending again.
This season
is not going to encourage that kind of behavior…they tried locking up some talent and look where we are.
Oh they spend alright
they spend good money on washed up never-has-beens like Vizcaino and unproven relievers like Corpas. Are you telling me you want them to spend money the right way? Psssshhh
Wow
It’s only 4-1, and you are ready to pack it in? I’m not the optimistic one, but this one isn’t over yet.
The Rockies’ ownership isn’t as rich as other owners. Pretty simple.
We're gonna win!
We’re gonna make a comeback…..
Ugh, this lineup. I’m sorry, I just can’t feel it tonight.
Free Casey Weathers!!!!
Man, I hope someone hits one of the racers.
"Keep your head down, and inch toward daylight." - Blade of Tyshalle
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
They can be
if they shuffled where their priorities are. They managed to get a revenue boost from postseason ticket sales last year, and bumped up ticket prices this year, and yet we still can’t seem to find the money to pay our players. The Rockies still rank near the bottom of percentage of team budget spent on player payroll. If the Monforts changed their business MO, they might be able to shift a good deal of money to player pay.
And if they turn out to be not that rich, then they need to sell to an owner that can be. We’re not going to get 2007 lucky every year.
But
do we really want them to sign Holliday/Atkins longterm? Those players will be well overpaid by the end of their contracts. See: Helton, Todd.
If we dont give the money to them
then who are we going to give it to?
they *are*
giving them money. They’re paying Atkins and Holliday a ton, considering our payroll. You trade them at the end of their contract and rebuild. It’s what you have to do in this market.
I guess that
it comes down to when we stop looking at the future and start concentrating on the now. We won’t lock up Holliday because we can fill his hole in the outfield. We won’t lock up Atkins because we can fill his hole at 3rd. This club always seems to rely on its farm system and looking for cheap talent (see: Redman, Mark and Nix, Jayson). Eventually, someone in the FO needs to realize that the farm system isn’t always the best answer.
That's
what you’re supposed to do. Holliday isn’t worth the money. Atkins is overrated. If you can’t afford a huge payroll, you have to be smart about your signings. It’s smart not to sign these guys.
I can see
where that method of thought comes from. For the record, though, I was mostly talking about getting new players, not whether or not resigning current ones is a good or bad thing. I’m pretty on the fence about Atkins, and I’d like to see what kind of package we can get for Holliday.
I suppose I’m just hoping for a day when the Rockies don’t have to deal with the tiny payroll, and they will go after some big names like Haren instead of scraping the bargain bin for Towers.
Let's see
we are well south of .500. Our pitching is a patchwork job. We continue to play and pitch Yorvit $3M and Vizcaino $3M with obvious better prooducts. Every pitcher we have started this year (sans Cook) has been a disaster. Thank god for the sorry NL west where a losing record lands you in first place and makes all the others feel “in the game” and sparks illusions of grandeur.

Lots of bitterness in here tonight...
Personally, my expectations were as low as possible for tonight, even before I knew about the presence of Nix, so anything better than a 400-0 loss is actually not so bad.
wow, what an inning.
lose our only chance to tie the game because our 3rd best hitter gets injured, followed up by the rare DP without a force at any base. jesus christ.
Nix's fail
is hitting pretty unimaginable levels right now. And aghhh….. noooo… why Spilly, why?

Wow...
Only the Rockies could turn a runners on 2nd and 3rd, nobody out situation into not scoring a run.
I would’ve taken the strikeout I thought you were going to have there Nix over that pitiful DP.
Keep the Cycnicism Coming
If we have no expectations, anything remotely good will feel great. If we think we’re gonna win, we’ll just be disappointed.
considering
they have had tons of chances tonight and CC hasn’t had very good stuff, yea, it’s totally reasonable to think we could win this game, if not for horrible luck/lack of timely hitting
Pinch hit Cook!
Hawpe will fish all day for that slider!
Just wanted to add to this
He did a good job at this after that 3 run bomb by Braun he allowed. Only 1 run the next 4 innings, which should’ve been 0.

Who didn't see that coming?
A strikeout by Hawpe.
Seriously, he has been awful against good lefties his entire career except for the couple times he got a hanging slider.
and the sad thing is that he's not even good against righties anymore
good thing we signed him to an extension, instead of the much more reasonable course of action of letting him walk and playing spilly in RF

I think he’s a career AAA player, unless he suddenly turns it around somehow. I don’t like what I’ve seen from him.

So long to all of that.
Hello to Rusch vs. Sheets.
"Keep your head down, and inch toward daylight." - Blade of Tyshalle
Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Glad i missed this debacle
1)Nix needs to be DFA’ed tomorrow. If Baker goes on the DL we have to bring up Stewart.
2)If Spilly goes on the DL I’d like to see Fowler up here. Instead we will get the highest paid CF in AAA.
3)At this point I’d like to see Hirsh…he was doing decently before he got hurt last year
The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season
Hirsh is a walk AND flyball machine
and those don’t come with strikeouts. That combination has no margin for error, and I don’t think Hirsh does us any good whatsoever, and I don’t see how it would do him good developmentally.
Can anyone teach around here?
Hirsh was a perfectly decent young starting pitcher for us last year before he got hurt. If he’s healthy now, and simply can’t locate or whatever, it must be some sort of mechanical flaw. Can’t our pitching coach at AAA, or even Apodaca, figure it out and straighten him out in short order? We really need the 2007 Hirsh back here in a hurry.
For that matter, we also need the 2007 Morales here too. I’m really starting to question the quality of our pitching instructors. They also weren’t helpful to Francis or Corpas early on. Maybe this traces to the loss of Bob McClure to KC (look how well their pitchers have done since he got there).
Of my list of concerns, this is my #1
teaching, (um…coaching?) especially our pitchers is a big issue. The regression of Francis, and Corpas, as well as Hirsh, Morales makes me wonder about our pitching coach. Throw in Reynolds not looking ready, and Weathers stuck in AA (though he has done ok, and this maybe a side issue) I wonder about our development of our pitchers to put in nicely. In fact I’m really concerned at the waste, and not only lack of development, but the regression of this talent.
Wonder what happened from last year to this year? That’s 3/5ths of the starting rotation and our closer that’s regressed, and in the case of the starters, not even major league level now!
I miss baseball. Can we fire Clint Hurdle and Dan O'Dowd now?
