Lineup

Man, these last few games I look at our lineup and I think, surely there must be better options. But then I realize, with injuries, not so much. At least Iannetta is in there today. Too bad Spilly got hurt yesterday and Baker is still (I assume) day-to-day.

Actually

I don’t mind this lineup in this injury purgatory we’re living in nowadays, but I don’t know if I can bring myself to watch a game in which my team sends Glendon “What’s the” Rusch to the mound against Ben “I’m going to strike out 20 Rockies tonight” Sheets.

by denver_sc on Jul 9, 2008 6:06 PM MDT up reply actions

I dont know

I dont think the lineup is terribly bad, I have seen worse. Anything with Choo, and Mohr was definitely worse. Besides, Venison could do something good. Also, at least we have Atkins, Hawpe, and Holliday (even if Hawpe is a poor mans Adam Dunn)

by MohrPlease on Jul 9, 2008 6:06 PM MDT reply actions

at least

there’s only 5 automatic outs in the lineup tonight, as opposed to the 6 last night

yeah, so

have you guys/gals heard that Barmes name has come up in trade rumors with both the Pads and the Dodgers? I’d be inclined to trade him if we can get a decent return…after all he was a pumpkin for a long time.

The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season

by moomacher on Jul 9, 2008 6:45 PM MDT reply actions

I'm not surprised by his name in rumors.

But I would be surprised to see him get traded. He’s a cheap guy, won’t be a big resign, and he can play anywhere.

As for the return, I don’t see it being too high. The upside would probably be to keep him, as he’s a sure .275 hitter who can play anywhere. You may lose that in a trade.

by roxintober on Jul 9, 2008 6:47 PM MDT up reply actions

At this point I'm open to whatever improves the team for next year

and if throwing Barmes in with Atkins or Holliday gets us a legit starter, then we should go for it. Because my read of the tea leaves is that our ‘09 rotation strategy is going to be the same as this year’s: “hope the young guys figure it out.” And that has worked out really well.

And this, describing a potential CC to LA trade...

Rosenthal describes the Dodgers as a “near-impossible trading partner.”

The Dodgers could’ve gotten CC Sabathia, Casey Blake, and Jamey Carroll without giving up Matt Kemp. Owner Frank McCourt may have killed the deal, though he denies it. Rosenthal describes the Dodgers as a “near-impossible trading partner.”

The 2008 Rockies: All loses, all season

by moomacher on Jul 9, 2008 7:48 PM MDT reply actions

He needed a good sacrificial lamb

so he can as much of his bench as possible just in case something happens later on. Might as well have our pitcher go with Hurdle’s small ball philosophy as opposed to letting a PH do the same thing. I swear, it makes sense.

by A.J. Haefele on Jul 9, 2008 7:50 PM MDT up reply actions

We do have a short and not very good bench today. I assume Baker’s not available.

by holly96 on Jul 9, 2008 7:52 PM MDT up reply actions

nah

you play to win the game. Saving pinch hitters when you’re up 4-1 is not playing to win the game. Pulling your pitcher with runners on base in order to score more runs is playing to win the game.

by Ghoulowitzki on Jul 9, 2008 7:54 PM MDT up reply actions

I didn't say I advocated his philosophy

just offering a possible logical reasoning as to why he does it. To me, it’s baffling, but delving into Hurdle’s mind is always a memorable experience, so I like to take a stab at it every so often.

by A.J. Haefele on Jul 9, 2008 7:55 PM MDT up reply actions

Just because his logic

doesn’t necessarily fit within the apparently closed box of “normal” logic, doesn’t mean it isn’t logic. Maybe I should have called it “Hurdlelogic” and appease the masses.

by A.J. Haefele on Jul 9, 2008 7:59 PM MDT up reply actions

Giving up

all those outs really kills a possible big inning.

by DieHardRox on Jul 9, 2008 7:48 PM MDT reply actions

Hurdle is the worst manager in MLB. Except maaaaybe Dusty Baker, but it’s close.

Personally,

I’ve been of the idea that Stewart needs not see the big club for the rest of the year. I realize I’m most likely alone in that opinion, but I would like to see him next year at the earliest and let him continue his development down there for the remainder of this year.

by A.J. Haefele on Jul 9, 2008 8:07 PM MDT up reply actions

Those were the first runs he’s given up in over 3 weeks. Even if it had been his fault, we can’t blame a reliever for giving up only two runs in 3 weeks.

by dogs on Jul 9, 2008 8:02 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm not blaming Manny for anything.

I happen to be quite a fan of Corpas, and have remained supportive of him throughout this trying season. I still think he’s going to form a potentially dominant back of the bullpen with Weathers in the near future. Was just mearly stating that it’s unfortunate when a pitcher is pitching well and still gives up runs because of the defense behind him.

by A.J. Haefele on Jul 9, 2008 8:06 PM MDT up reply actions

I know:

I was just reading Corpas’s recent stats and was looking for an opportunity to insert that little nugget about 3+ scoreless weeks (10 appearances). I understood your sentiment about the suckiness of his plight tonight. .

That

is something I have taken the responsibility of understanding better than anyone else. I’ve ranted many a time about it, so I’ll pass tonight.

It's official:

No more petulance directed at Koshansky for at least a few more appearances.

Well, an occasional HR

doesn’t exempt him from the fail he tends to display on a daily basis.

An insurance homerun

is enough to make up for poor defensive play and 2 more strikeouts? Really?

by A.J. Haefele on Jul 9, 2008 8:14 PM MDT up reply actions

OK:

In light of recent petulance, I retract my anti-petulant remarks.

by TuLoRocks2008 on Jul 9, 2008 8:13 PM MDT reply actions

Wow, Koshansky = Cust?

Guy who can’t be a fielder, sucks for the most part at the plate but when he connects, its GONE.

Nope

Koshansky = Branyan in my book

by IowaRockie on Jul 9, 2008 8:14 PM MDT up reply actions

Which is to say....

Poor defense. Low batting average. Outrageous strikeout numbers. And the absolutely gawdy power when the pitcher makes a mistake. Fun to watch, but really makes me appreciate Helton’s glove.

OK Taylor

by A.J. Haefele on Jul 9, 2008 8:25 PM MDT up reply actions

The Met, the Museum of Natural History,

the Museum of Sex. Um, haven’t been to the last one yet. There’s a whole lot more to do that just those places, though.

I don't like it when Hurdle....

brings in his closer with a 5 run lead. What if we need him tomorrow in a 1-run game?

by GoRoxGo on Jul 9, 2008 8:31 PM MDT reply actions

He's the same shaky closer

with a 5 run lead or a 1 run lead. It doesn’t matter. I’d prefer we traded him in the top of the 9th so he didn’t have a chance to put him in. I’d really like to win.

by A.J. Haefele on Jul 9, 2008 8:32 PM MDT up reply actions

I don’t know, would you rather have Herges?

by Squeaky on Jul 9, 2008 8:32 PM MDT up reply actions

Kinda reminds me

of that Fogg vs. Schilling matchup last year that we all figured was a lost cause, but ended up being a 12-2 win. Then again, Fogg has/had a reputation as a Dragon Slayer. Rusch, um… does not.
