Fuentes and Taveras Placed on Waivers

The Rockies have placed Brian Fuentes and Willy Taveras on waivers.  Ken Rosenthal has the story here.  According to him:

If either or both are claimed, the Rockies will have 48 hours to work out a trade with the claiming team or teams. If either or both clear waivers — which is unlikely — they can be traded to any club.

The Dodgers, who own the worst record of any National League contender, will get the first crack at claiming Fuentes.

He goes on to say that Tito makes sense for Dodgers because Takashi Saito is hurt.  He also speculates that the Mets and/or Phillies might be interested in Taveras.

Eat. Drink. Be Merry. But the above FanPost does not necessarily reflect the attitudes, opinions, or views of Purple Row's staff (unless, of course, it's written by the staff [and even then, it still might not]).

In the footnotes

of this article by Troy Renck, he surmises that Taveras might clear waivers, since Boston has other options and since Washington doesn’t want to add payroll. If he clears waivers, the Rockies can trade him to any team.

Renck also states that the Cardinals, Rays, and Dodgers are likely to make claims on Fuentes. Since the Dodgers have the worst record of that bunch, they would win the claim. According to Renck, any team acquiring Fuentes would have to give up a “premium young starting pitcher.”

I believe the Mets would also put a claim on Fuentes, but they might not win because of their record. Their bullpen has been terrible lately, especially last night when they turned a 7-0 lead into a 8-7 extra innings loss. If the Mets somehow win the claim, they would have to offer more than just Aaron Heilman. Perhaps John Maine would be sufficient…

No trade interest in Taveras makes things difficult

With Fowler almost guaranteed a Sept call-up when rosters expand, I have to think the Rox are hoping to be able to swap him into Willy’s spot on the 40-man. If they can’t trade Taveras, then what?

8 outfielders on the 40-man would be pretty crowded adding him to:

Holliday, Hawpe, Podsednik, Smith, Spillborghs, Taveras and Sullivan

One thing to also consider

IF the rockies can make a run at this, and they now have the chance to get to five games, you may want Fowler eligible for the post-season, meaning he needs to get on the 25 man before the first of September. IF the Rockies can’t deal Taveras and IF they are within 5 games this weekend, I’d DFA Scott Podsednik.

Or they can use a DL exemption?

This is how Seth Smith was eligible last season. With several players on the DL right now, it would be easy and probably beneficial to sub Fowler for a pitcher and carry an extra position player for the postseason.

I apologize for being all over the place on this.

But I think this is my last one for a while. From this article, here’s how I understand it. Please correct me if you read it differently.

The more people on the DL as of Sunday (8/31), allows for more eligible people on the active/25-man roster (e.g. Register and Speier). So Rockies have 3 (Spillborghs, Herges and Helton), then they have their 25 men, so that they have 28 eligible post-season bodies. Unless going into the post-season they still have someone on DL or DL someone else, then they can replace that person (or persons) with anyone within the organization, assuming they add him to the 40-man first.

So it would seem that if Fowler wasn’t on the 25-man come Sunday, they would need to DL or have someone still on the DL (e.g. Helton) to be able to add him to post season roster.

Smith was eligible last year b/c Taveras was on DL at start of Division Series.

And don't forget Spillborghs

They’ve got some interesting roster decisions to make this weekend. They also have to activate Ryan by Sunday to get him on the active roster, right? So who gets bumped?

Rox Girl is right, I think, about the DL exemption. I believe it applies only to a 60-day DL person, so if Helton is still on 60-Day, come Sunday, they should have a freeby to include in playoff rosters.

Apparently not about the 60-Day

You obviously can’t believe everything you read on the internet.

This morning RMN, seems to indicate that any DL position provides the flexibility.

Definitely a confusing subject

Here’s an article that accurately describes it all, and yet it’s still hard to understand.

With Fuentes

on bereavement leave, it effectively ends any chance at a waiver deal. It’s like he’s gone on the DL for wiavers purposes. At the earliest, the Rockies could place Fuentes on waivers again on Friday. If that happens, he wouldn’t clear waivers until after Sunday, which is the September 1 deadline for playoff roster eligibility.

any news on this...

when do we find out if anyone made a claim on either of them?

by DenverBears on Aug 29, 2008 11:12 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

On Sunday

Troy E. Renck wrote:

Center fielder Willy Taveras knew he had been claimed on waivers Friday after checking his phone messages. He speculated that the Yankees or Nationals might have claimed him. While the team is unknown, his preference is.
“I want to stay here. We are playing really well at the right time,” Taveras said.
It’s highly unlikely the Rockies would trade the center fielder. They can just pull him back off waivers, using the knowledge of the teams that claimed him to pursue a deal in the offseason.
