I know you’re the kind of guy that won’t be intimidated by the pressure and who will dig deep and find another month of quality pitches in the waning years of your career. Invent them as you go if you have to. Just win tonight and solidify the bottom of our rotation….. Amen.

i can't believe it either. And this is with SF's notorious 2-3mph speed boost

I don’t know how SF keeps missing those straight 81 mph whatever-the-f-it-is pitches. I guess we’re lucky they threw out the AAAA team for tonight’s game.

by Ghoulowitzki on Aug 27, 2008 8:48 PM MDT up reply actions

Stew consistently shows

one minor, correctable flaw, he has poor pitch recognition on the inner half. I think this is just something that will come with experience and dilligent cage work in the off-season. Too often he takes inside fastballs from right handers that end up riding back over the middle of the plate. Part of this, I believe, comes from some infamiliarities in his stance adjustment. He’s only started hitting from a straight on (not open) stance this year, so he hasn’t had as much experience with these fastballs from this viewpoint.

The good thing is that it isn’t a bat speed issue, where he can’t handle inside pitches, because he’s proven the opposite against lefties. He just needs to pick up the inside fastball a little better out of the hand.

I know there’s worry about Stew falling off a bit next year, and some things will have to dip, like BABIP. However, I think a corresponding drop in K rate will help counterbalance the BABIP dip. You can categorize Stew’s K’s in to three areas: A true swing and miss strike out, a caught looking on the inner half, and most recently, rookie strikezone punchouts. The first one is unavoidable. The second will be tempered by continual improvement in pitch recognition, and the thrid seems to dissipate as Stewart gains notoriety around the league (leveling his reputation against that of the pitchers). I would expect the K rate to settle in around 22-25% next season, still high, but not extreme, and still loaded with walks.

by David OhNo on Aug 27, 2008 8:45 PM MDT reply actions

And this looks out of game flow

because I started typing it after Ian’s strike two…

by David OhNo on Aug 27, 2008 8:45 PM MDT up reply actions

Wasn't this an issue with Andres Gallaraga?

His stance was too open, he couldn’t recognize enough inside pitches, once he closed it up a little he became a hitting monster?

I want one of these unis. I don't care what you say, it looks awesome.

by The Lodo Magic Man on Aug 27, 2008 8:48 PM MDT up reply actions

I think the reverse, yes

I think Ian’s struggling with inside pitches because he has closed it, but I think it’s primarily because he’s still getting acclimated with it. I think a lot of times with open stances you see trouble with outside pitches, sometimes open hitters don’t get back to the plate quick enough on those. Similar theory though.

by David OhNo on Aug 27, 2008 8:51 PM MDT up reply actions

now that I think of it..

I think you’re right. I think Gallaraga opened his stance more.

I know pitching has been the hot button

but I will make the case this off-season that a bonafide leadoff hitter should be top priority. We have a poorly designed lineup that leaks in too many valuable areas. The Rockies squander more with an ineffective lineup/personnel than they do with their pitchers, only because the offense should be capable of more than it produces.

by David OhNo on Aug 27, 2008 8:53 PM MDT up reply actions

Fowler and...

Ryan Spillborghs. Not the prototypical, but doesn’t he see a lot of pitches and make enough contact?

Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave

He'd be a fine leadoff hitter

his career .375 OBP (.420 this year) would be very welcome at the top of this lineup

by Ghoulowitzki on Aug 27, 2008 8:57 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm a big Fowler fan

having watched him almost every othe rweek here in Tulsa, but I don’t like the idea of putting that kind of pressure on him just yet. Fowler needs to be the ‘09 everyday centerfielder, but I don’t want him to be the everyday leadoff hitter until he’s acclimated with the league.

Spilborghs could work, but I think even he runs into contact troubles when forced to play every day.

The Rockies need to go outside and they should target second base. Not so surprisingly, that makes Brian Roberts the obvious candidate. My offer: Barmes, A. Rodriguez, a pick from another B list starter (Lindsay, Rogers, Graham, Reynolds, etc.) Might throw in one of Baker or Smith too.

but I feel Todd must prove he’s completely healthy before regaining a full time starting role at first base. I love his defense there and he still has a great eye, I’m just worried about his brittleness at this point.

by jimmyski on Aug 27, 2008 9:10 PM MDT up reply actions

You and I both know

that Helton will be resuming duty BEFORE he is completely healthy. As soon as doctors clear him, he will make a start or two down at AAA then be back in the line up, and Stewie will ride pine. Hurdle and the FO have huge man-crushes on Helton

Remembering Dustin Mohr's glory years!

by MohrPlease on Aug 27, 2008 9:17 PM MDT up reply actions

And I understand why to an extent

There has never been another player that has meant so much to this organization and been through as much as Helton has. However, there will soon be a time that what’s best for Todd and what’s best for the organization won’t be the same thing. It’s unfortunate but in reality, “That’s life”, as us common folk would refer to it.

by jimmyski on Aug 27, 2008 9:22 PM MDT up reply actions

Yep, and unfortunately what is best for Todd is to collect the 60 million that the team still owes him

If the FO was smart (which they aren’t) they’d negotiate some sort of buyout or renegotiated contract, which we all know isn’t ever going to happen. Our best bet is Todd having some sort of epiphany about life being more important than baseball or money and retiring.

left Livan in way too long

left Vizcaino in way too long. This one’s on Hurdle. Probably the 15th game we’ve lost cause of him by my count.

by Ghoulowitzki on Aug 27, 2008 10:27 PM MDT reply actions

Where do you get "left Livan in way too long"

He’d thrown 78 pitches in 6 innings, hadn’t walked a batter, hadn’t given up a hard hit ball in at least three innings, and the first three batters for the 7th were 0-6 against him.

I know you’ve got a hatchet out for Hurdle, but there’s not many managers who pull a starter throwing a 3 hit shutout with no walks and a low pitch count at that point.

Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave

by Mondogarage on Aug 27, 2008 10:29 PM MDT up reply actions

Because Livan is not a good pitcher.

Enjoy the 6 good innings, but realize that he had been throwing up 81 mph meatballs all game long. Add that too the fact that he batted in the top of the inning with a runner on and two outs, and it was a pretty clear PH situation. And they had the heart of their order coming up. Absolutely no reason to leave him out there.

If Hurdle had any sense he would have...

pinch hit for Livan during the 7th with CDI on base. We needed more than 1 run to win the game and he would have put in viz in the 7th, bucky in the 8th, corpas in the 9th. BS call on the run scoring on the DP! But what the hell else is new?

I admit todd would have done that...

I’m not saying that atkins wasn’t at fault there or that he made the right play. I am saying that Livan was the underdog here and they should have done what they could to get him a win when he pitched so well. Atkins was bad all around tonight, but he was not the only one not hitting. Stewart also looked bad tonight and doesn’t get nearly the critcism the other guys do. Not that I dislike Stewie, but I think the guys should be held equally responsible for their mistakes.

Considering what Stew has done

for this team over the past month in comparison, I’m not sure what you’re talking about here. Everyone’s allowed their bad nights, and Atkins’ was only magnified by his throwing error in a tight game. Bottom line, it was still a routine throw that went into the right field bullpen.

Atkins wasn’t the reason we lost, and no one is saying as much. In truth, we were simply bested by a superior pitcher in Lincecum.

by David OhNo on Aug 27, 2008 10:46 PM MDT up reply actions

I guess that came out somewhat wrong...

Lincecum is one of the best, if not the best pitcher in the league. He was great tonight and showed that with his high pitch count and longevity. We were beaten by a superior pitcher and tonight would have been tough even if it had been Cook instead of Livan. Bad defense really hurts teams and both Stewart and Atkins had rough nights on both sides. Especially Atkins. I do realize it’s just one night. I like Stewart and I appreciate what he has done for the Rockies, especially in the last month. I think he is incredibly talented and has made great improvements, but I also worry because the Rockies media and fans have put him up so high that when he does have rough times (like every player does) it will seem worse. I am truly happy for the sucess both guys have had in their own ways, tonight doesn’t take away from that. I am sure they will both do better in Friday’s game.
