Tuesday Morning Rockpile:
How ugly was last night's third inning? Was it as ugly as a velvet Elvis painting, as Patrick Saunders believes?
Actually, isn't it possible that Cook saw a velvet Elvis painting in the stands, causing him to commit the error in the third inning?
At least Cook's taking responsibility: "I knew I was going to have to try to battle through it and try to get the ball down," Cook said. "I just didn't execute." There were far too many line drives off Cook last night, and look at the results.
If you want to know what the Rockies were handed last night, don't ask Clint Hurdle:
"We got handed something (Monday night)," Hurdle said. "We need to get a good night's sleep in our own beds and come back out (tonight) and bounce back."
Handed a loss? A wake up call? A win? Certainly one of those three, maybe a second one, but not all three.
Todd Helton had an MRI yesterday, but there's still no timetable for his return.
At least the guys aren't going at each other like Prince Fielder did with Manny Parra last night (unless that's what you want):

Troy Renck?
Actually, Patrick Saunders wrote the article. Anyway, Renck deserves to be mistaken for someone else after mixing up Jorge and Valerio.

Parra deserved it.
He shouldn’t have been pissed and glaring at Fielder. That was clearly the pitchers mess, and while Fielder doesn’t have a ton of range, it doesn’t get better or worse for any other pitcher, so he has to deal with that.

Enough is enough
I have been suckered in a few times through this rollercoaster year to thinking…”wow this is the time the rockies are going to turn it around….this is ittt”....well enough is enough i think the rollercoaster ride is over after yesterday’s ridiculous performance and we have hit ROCK BOTTOM now. I’m not going to get suckered in again this year unless we are actually IN the playoffs or within like 1 or 2 games. Thanks for all the false hope rockies.
this team is utter rubbish...

Well, he will arrive.
Livan Hernandez = a Colorado Rockie.
Well, its not official, but it’s as close as it can be…

Great!
We’ll get to see if he can be the first pitcher in modern baseball history to give up 300 hits in a single season! Whee!
This is nothing but a bad idea.

One other thing:
You guys do realize who’s going to catch every game this fat piece of crap throws for us, right? Consider that Livan is close friends with one of our two backstops… and it ain’t the white kid from Providence.
So every five days everyone here will get to bitch about Yorvit being in the starting lineup – a favorite past time of the game threaders. No wonder everyone wanted Livan so badly.

Who are you fighting so vociferously with?
I’m pretty sure most of us on this blog are, at most, indifferent to this idea.
I’m just saying, this general hostility toward “everyone here” really brings down the mood. No need to be so crabby.

I don't think this is a "good" idea
but so long as we’re not spending any money on him or trading anything for him, its hardly a bad idea either. Its more of a “I’d be furious if we were really in contention, but we aren’t so big whoop” kind of move.
That said, since I do not believe that we are really in contention, I would certainly rather see JDLR be the guy to round out the rotation now that Rusch seems to have earned himself the #4 spot for the foreseeable future…but I also realize that JDLR appears to be a gas can of epic proportions, and watching him burn down a few times a month isn’t much fun. If the front office sees a future for JDLR on this team, he should be given the chance here. It does not seem like that is the case, except maybe as a reliever (which might not be a bad idea).
Whatever. All this really does is cement the fact that this front office needs to learn from two straight years’ worth of desperation August SP maneuvers and actually try to put together a legitimate MLB staff for next season.

They

Only one option
The only option left appears to be to forfeit every start that he makes.
Thanks for educating us on his future here so that no one had to waste time on actually playing the games.

I think
(emphasis on think) I’m happy about this. Even after Francis returns, we still need someone to chew up some innings in the #4 spot, while still keeping us in the game. Maybe Livan is that guy. I doubt he could be much worse than what we’ve been trotting out to the hill the last couple of months. (emphasis on doubt).
Put me out of my misery. Please!

We need another good RH pinch hitter....
with Spillborghs still on the shelf, and Livan comes here with that extra benefit. The guy could hit .300 at Coors Field.
I’m not so concerned by the high hit totals. He has a bad BABIP (.364), which should moderate somewhat. It’s .313 over the pat three seasons. He’s not too old to rebound a bit, and is certainly better than the dregs of #5 starters we’ve sent out there this season to-date.

Worth a shot
In terms of making a statement to fans or players, this is a cheap (in a good way) example.
They get the best guy available (even if he is bad) and they give up very little to do it, unlike the pre-deadline deals for bottom of the rotation starters that came with a much higher price tag.
Even if he totally tanks they are wasting a fraction of the money that they wasted on Wells and they are going to get a lot more PR value out of this signing.
Seems like a low risk scenario.
