Game #116: Francis vs Bergmann
Washington Nationals at Colorado Rockies, Aug 7, 2008 1:05 PM MDT
I'm not exactly sure why the Nationals feel better off with a Francis/Bergmann, Perez/Jimenez card today than the way things were originally scheduled, but that's the way it appears. At any rate, the Rockies need to start showing they're up to a chase in earnest, and a home doubleheader sweep would be a strong play in that regard.
Go Rockies!

No TV is bugging me
The 1p.m. game wasn’t scheduled for TV in the first place, but you would think FSN could pick up the second game for TV. What if that second game of the Dodger DH on Sept. 18 last year hadn’t been televised? Fans at home watching live would have missed one of the great moments in Rockies history—the Helton 2-out, 2-strike walkoff homer for victory.
At least MASN
is televising both games. MLB.TV users rejoice!

Awesome lucksackery
Just got handed two free tickets in section 137, and about to play hooky from work. And wearing a CR purple golf shirt, to boot. Have fun on the Purple Row, and let’s take two.
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
Boooooooooooo
I’m jealous. And 1,600 miles away. But still jealous.
Second half run?

Stewart at 3rd
even though it’s because of “playing the numbers”, it’s good to see. Let’s hope he gets to start tonight as well. His D behind U-Ball will help a lot.

...And that DP meets with our approval.
Francis'
first inning went well. Are the bats going to be awake for this one?

Bah
this un-clutchiness has the faint whiff of April
Second half run?
I say
in honor of the Olympics, rather than extra innings today, any tie game after 9 is decided by a 100 yard dash between Taveras and Bonifacio.
Hmmm
I’m gonna go with Bonifacio on that one….younger legs
Second half run?
that guy can burn for sure.
but I wouldn’t bet against willy either. Would be fun. Maybe a timed home-to-home sprint?

Milledge does the little fake bunt thing with a 3-0 count, I used to do that in little league.

Well
I think its fair to say that Francis’ return was hardly triumphant. Pretty terrible, actually, after a solid start. If Milledge is squaring him up like this, imagine what ManRam is going to do.
Perhaps
the team will actually show up for Game 2.
I don't get it
How did the downfall of Francis occur?
Everyone figured him out
Slow fastball, slow curveball.
You can sit on the curve and still react to the fastball. With littl movement on the pitch it is very hittable.

Very true
plus, many of the breaking balls just drop right into the wheelhouse of righties if Francis isn’t hitting his spots, and he hasn’t been hitting his spots at all this year.
Also, as today demonstrates, when he’s working away from righties and getting strike calls, he can get people to chase. But once the umps take away that outside strike, he has to pitch into the zone, where the lack of speed and sharp movement are devastating.
I'm looking forward
to 10 more starts of that
Second half run?
I'm looking forward
to 2 more years of that
Cmon guys, do we really believe that last year was a fluke?
He is going to be a really solid pitcher, it has been a rough year for him. Give him support instead of tearing him down
Remembering Dustin Mohr's glory years!
Agreed, and...
...not to chastise cynicism, but we were all eagerly awaiting his return to the rotation.
of course
he was the anchor last year, and we NEED great pitching right now
Remembering Dustin Mohr's glory years!
erm...Livan Hernandez??
Just kidding. Not really. Sort of.
Curveballs don’t work at altitude. Francis wont work at altitude over a 3-5 year time frame. One season does not a career make.
by cocainelips99 on Aug 7, 2008 2:43 PM MDT up reply actions
I think the truth is
he wasn’t as great as last year, and he’s not as bad as this year. He’s probably a true #3 starter in the NL (probably #4 for the AL at best) that has been unrealistically pitched as a #1 guy.
The fact is, soft tossing lefties absolutely MUST have pinpoint control, and Francis has lost that this year.
unless yorvy
can get a clutch hit…
this team is utter rubbish...

The next time
Yorvit whines about lack of PT, whoever he’s talking to should bring up that swing he just offered and say STOP DOING THAT AND YOU MIGHT PLAY MORE.
the sad thing is
that his petulant whining about playing time is likely the reason that Hurdle keeps giving him 40% of the starts, instead of 20% like a backup catcher should have. Real team guy.
ever notice how lackadaisical he is behind the plate
He always looks like he has somewhere he would rather be. I really dislike everything about him. He is supposed to be great with the pitchers because he tells them to keep their shoulder closed when they throw a ball high? Seriously? This isn’t Little League.
by cocainelips99 on Aug 7, 2008 2:54 PM MDT up reply actions
Exactly
I have no problem with a guy wanting to play…in fact, obviously, I want that attitude. But when you are not producing, and the guy replacing you IS producing, that is the time to be quiet and try to make the most of the opportunities you do get. And as you note, he’s getting a lot more of a chance here than he’d get anywhere else (and certainly, the Rockies gave him his first real chance to be a starter). So the upshot is…play better, and then force the team to play you more based on merit. But Hurdle has never been too concerned about merit…
Hey, we should
see CDI in the nightcap! No, that doesn’t ease my mind after seeing Torrealba fail just moments ago.

Trying to stay positive
so let’s get in the mode of ruining the season’s of contending teams, we might still be able to do that.
Also on a positive note, we are very likely going to see Fowler this year, so its not all bad.
Did you see
that low angle of Atkins’ attempting to field Grilli’s low throw? Dear lord. If we really expect him to be a 1b down the line, he MUST dramatically improve this area of his game. His glove was about 7 inches from the ball.
If every team JUST played the Rockies
there would be a lot of no name Cy Young winners
Remembering Dustin Mohr's glory years!
that's what happens when
you have a terrible hitting coach and an ex-terrible hitting coach as manager
yea, i guess I wouldn't put anything past Hurdle
including starting Yorvit again tonight because he got a hit this game
Kip
not DFA’ed yet unfortunately
Second half run?
there WILL be repercussions from that inning
Hurdle: Huh, the Kipper just threw a scoreless inning, Bob…pencil him in as our #3 starter, bump U-Ball tonight and throw in the Kipper
Remembering Dustin Mohr's glory years!
no! don't do that

Matty
stop with the meaningless home runs!
Second half run?
Hey....
...give our boys a break. It’s not like they’re facing the worst team in the league and a pitcher who’s 1-8 or anything.
Oh, wait…...
To be fair...
The guy may have a bad record, but his ERA wasn’t horrendous. He probably pitched decently in at least some of those losses.
Well....
if you’re serious about making a pennant run, getting utterly shut down by a guy about whom the best you can say is that his ERA “isn’t horrendous” is still a pretty sad thing.
I'm not disagreeing
I’m just saying, it’s not as if this is a guy who’s not capable of ever pitching well.
Exactly, see my comment above about Bergmann's run support
He’s been pitching very well for most of the season, it’s just that his team had been scoring less than two runs a game for him before popping out sixteen these last two outings.
Matty has become the NL A-Rod

torreabla homered?
seriously
why are you against girls, what do i have to do to get someone to fucking understand me and i'm so happy that i amuse you.
Actually, Torrealba doing well might be a good thing for the Rockies
Because of his contract and generally poor stats heading into August, he’s likely to have cleared waivers meaning he’d probably be one of the few players available to teams this month. Him hitting well just in time for the stretch drive plus his intangible playoff experience from last season could mean he becomes more tradeable now than he was in July. Looking at the Phillies and Marlins in particular, it seems to make sense for one of them to try and get him.
Sully comes through . . .
Smith is up.

Kind of a pathetic game.
Good thing I was hardly even watching
Getting a split at home with the worst team in baseball, with our 3 "best" pitchers starting is completely unacceptable.
And that’s IF we win this game.
