Game #117: Jimenez vs Perez

Washington Nationals at Colorado Rockies, Aug 7, 2008 4:15 PM MDT

Barring a big comeback in the last two innings of game one this afternoon, it looks like we'll need some better mojo for game number two. So let this GameThread be the bearer of better mojo and let's take down this pesky Nationals team, please.

Go Rockies!

I think I've resigned myself to the fact

that the Rockies aren’t contending this year. For some reason I keep getting ideas. But there you have it…right now, I’m just hoping for respectable.

by Squeaky on Aug 7, 2008 3:45 PM MDT reply actions

yeah, see, that's the problem with this season

In the NL West if the team was respectable it would be contending. Unfortunately you can’t have one without the other this season.

by Rox Girl on Aug 7, 2008 3:48 PM MDT up reply actions

Actually.....

Since I don’t think I have any other options….. I believe my new stance is that it’s a very good thing that the Rockies don’t look like they have a prayer of wiining the NL West. I mean, do we really want to go down in history as what may be the worst team to ever make the play-offs? Because that’s kind of what it’s looking like for whatever team wins this mess of a division. The rest of the division will be mostly forgotten by history, but the poor saps that win it will never be able to live it down. Yep, that’s how I now choose see it through my purple color glasses.

by IowaRockie on Aug 7, 2008 3:58 PM MDT up reply actions

Me too.

I’ll keep watching every day, and I acknowledge that there’s still a chance that our team will become amazing oh about right… now, and come back to take the division. But I don’t have much hope at this point. Sure, we’ve had a lot of bad pitching, but even if that improves, the offensive problems don’t seem to be going away except in short bursts. I hope to be proved wrong.

IMO

this team will be a 72-76 win team.

I kind of like this double header thing

Especially when the second game starts right after the first. :)

Yes, even though the Rockies are so pathetic. If it gets really bad, I can always go read the Iliad like I’m supposed to (yes, I’m procrastinating).

You're supposed to have read the first 3 books

That is, I THINK it’s the first 3…yes, I’m going to an Ivy League. I’m really smart.

I've

either lost my copy of the Iliad or gave it to a friend who needed it for a class. I’m thinking the latter is more likely.

I got back from Coors Field

sat through 18 innings of baseball.

Misserable, lifeless baseball.

Here are some things I saw (baseball wise)
1)Willie is a great defender. That out he made in the first game in Right/Center at the wall I don’t think any one else in baseball could have gotten too. He makes the pitchers nervous when get gets on bases. Too bad he rarely gets on base. A good batting coach might help him learn how to take walks, or to foul stuff off, to coax a walk
2) Tulo has a new stance…yet again. This kid had some hits, but the fact that he doesn’t have a comfortable, stance that is “His” bothers me. By this stage in his career he shouldn’t be on his 4th stance in his 2nd big league career. A good batting coach would stop this and get him a stance, and keep him to it.
3) Atkins will never be a major league first baseman, he’s flat scared to death over there. He’s right handed, which means his range is limited from 1st to begin with. and since he’s no great shakes as a 3rd basemen, I’d start to trade this kid this off season. Also he’s dropping his hands when he hits, and that’s making him late on everything. His average has dived since moving to first. It’s in his head big time. A good batting coach could fix the hands thing.
4) Stewart really needs to learn the strike zone, and control it. and WHY is he not playing more? He looks like a super star in the wings. A Good batting coach could really help him prepare for various pitches a pitcher my throw.
5) Hawpe’s stance is gotten weird. His legs are together until his knees then his legs pigeon toe out. When he swings….everything is moving, form his feet to his head. He may have the worst mechanics of any batting swing I’ve seen in a while. A good batting coach, and he could be a solid hitter.
6) Francis: Had some good pop to his fast ball, and was 89-91mph until the 5th, when his velocity dropped to the mid 80’s. He was tired and he got killed. BUT what does Hurdle do? let him bat, with runners on in scoring position, so he can go back out to the mound with nothing in his arm…..made no sense. Hurdle cost the teams several runs (at least the 2 Francis gave up, and maybe one or two from the pinch hitter). Also Francis really scares me. If his fastball stays in the mid 80s, he doesn’t have enough secondary pitches to pitch in the major leagues. In fact….he has until the end of the year, to either be hurt and have an excuse, or to regain his velocity, or I’d move on from him.

Lastly: We have no pitching coach, no batting coach, and Hurdle can’t handle a pitching staff. Why these bums have a job beats me. Many teams send a message, that half-assed mediocrity is not acceptable and get rid of bums, that post losing season, after losing season.

OH, non baseball related: I love cinnamon Tornadoughs!

Thought Clint Hurdle should be fired before it was cool.

by Redhawk on Aug 7, 2008 8:50 PM MDT reply actions

Agree with much of what you said

1) Willie definately has some assets…. And some flaws. Gets way too much crap sometimes, but he does need to increase his OBP or he will very shortly become a defensive replacement/pinch runner type.
2) Tulo…. Good observation, but I’m not too worried yet as I sort of anticipated a softmore slump. The early season struggles scared me, but his ability to get his average back up to where it is has eased my mind greatly.
3) Atkins….. Really makes you appreciate Helton doesn’t it? I’m not saying Todd’s worth the salary anymore, but his defense, ability to work a count, and history in Colorado make him more valueable to the Rockies than any other team. I hope he retires a Rockie.
4) Stewie….. Not too worried about the strikeouts YET. Playing time is bugging me at this point in the season. Perhaps Winter ball is an option?
5) Hawpe….. A more streaky hitter does not reside on the Rockies roster. I get a kick out of how The Row loves him one month and hates him the next. In the end of the season he’s a major league average right-fielder, plus he’s homegrown so that’s enough for me to not worry about his position.
6) Francis….. First game back. Yeah, they should have been more careful with him. Don’t know how much injuries have slowed him this year, but I do believe he’s a better pitcher than he’s shown. I don’t however believe he’s the ace he was billed as last year. He’s a fine #3/4 in my mind.
Etc) I think you have some valid points on Hurdle and the coaching staff, but I’m a little less upset with them than most as I believe they didn’t get enough credit for helping to develop much of this team in 2006 and 2007. That said, even I have entertained the thought that the team has moved past the point where Hurdle is the man for the job. And finally, living in Iowa I’ve never had a cinnamon Tornadough, but with a name like that I can’t imagine it being bad.
