It would have to be in consistent smaller doses

a few twenty HR, solid OBP guys to make up for the loss of a big bat.
The problem with this approach is that there can’t be more than one non-pitcher drag on the lineup or it starts to break apart in practical application. It would be absolutely critical that we have an upgrade at second or center and solid, somewhat consistent power threats off the bench. I just can’t see it all happening with internal fills, particularly at second but also keeping frowing pains with Fowler in mind, so if we do trade Matt, we’ll need to address this shortfall via free agency if we don’t get ready made solutions back in exchange.

Well since all the talk seems to be

trade Matty for pitching (which I completely understand and reluctantly support), it seems unlikely to me that we’d get a power bat in the deal as well. Humidor or no humidor, a consistent power bat in the line-up at Coors seems like a must to me. If we look to FA for the solution, who’s available? Maybe I’m missing something, however. You know I’m not the best baseball mind on the Row.

It's actually fairly decent.

If you figure that Teixeira and Manny get the big $$, there will be some pretty good next tier hitters like Dunn and Burrell that might have to settle for a bit less than they would in other years where they were at the top of the market.

I actually

was a USC fan too (and I still have a soft spot for ’em) from back when Carson Palmer was QB — especially because I almost went there undergrad over Georgetown.

I’ve become much more of a UA fan in recent years, though.

Chad Qualls is our best reliever right now, (and probably over the course of the whole season) but he is AWFUL when he comes in with inherited runners.

Hopefully you’ll love him when he plays an important role as a Rockie or hate him as someone who destroys your pitching. But never deny him the respect of his hard work . He’s looking much more comfortable at the plate now than he was in July, obviously he was our only offense on Wednesday. I just wish Hurdle would give him more AB’s these last few games.
