SG at Replacement Level Yankees Weblog has used the Hardball TImes projections for 2009 to simulate the season 100 times and comes out with the Rockies on top of the NL West. Marcel projects us to win, too.

Hmm.

I think the phrase “Folie à deux” is applicable here.

Blast and botheration.

Or is that

folie à trois?

Blast and botheration.

how many simulations predicted that the Soviets would penetrate the Fulda Gap?

Did SG to Cold War sims too?

I didn’t realize Diamond Mind Baseball had so many useful applications.

Wow

Hey, I’m as dangerously afflicted with ‘true believer-ism’ as anybody, maybe even more so, but even my most feverish offseason dreams haven’t included an 89-win season. (See, I’m thinking 86 is all we’ll need.)

This is probably the first time ever that the projections are more bullish than we are around here, although as badly as we (the royal we, you know, the editorial) got burnt with expectations for 2008, I’m not surprised if most people scoff at these numbers.

87 or 88 wins playing in the NL West....

is not the same thing as 88 wins playing in the AL East. We are not as good as Tampa Bay, for example. Not even close.

The unbalanced schedule results in nearly half our games against SF, LA, SD, and AZ. Such an easy schedule should allow the division’s first place team to accumulate 85 to 90 wins. And that team won’t be as good as its record.

That's what SG's been saying in the comments,

It’s not that the Rockies pitching staff is so good, it’s just that the rest of the division’s offenses are that bad, and our own offense is just mediocre enough to take advantage of it.

by Rox Girl on Jan 10, 2009 8:59 PM MST up reply actions

Well look at it this way....

….we’ll take our little victories wherever we can find them…..our midling pitching vs. their poor offense. Whatever it takes.

Keep in mind too that these are before Manny signs

He’ll add at least three wins to the projections for the Dodgers, and they ought to get a couple more wins out of pitcher signings as well.

Colorado: minus Holiday, Tavaras, and Fuentes, plus Street, Gonzalez, Smith, and Marquis, equals fourteen more wins?

Why did we get Sabathia instead of Greg Smith?

Ha that’s hilarious! New Yorkers and your wasted money on shiny new things. Out west we use a term called R-E-C-Y-C-L-I-N-G !!

So.....

you would advocate melting down Greg Smiths? Or refurbishing them, perhaps? Because I think you’d have to melt down about four Greg Smiths to get enough scrap metal just to build one Captain Cheeseburger.

At least Colorado..

Shored up the back end of its rotation by picking up Smith and Marquis. It’s not like they let a 300 game winner go, to sign with a divisional rival! Geesh

Also

don’t forget Matt Belisle. He’s a nice little project pitcher as well.
