Hawpe accepts Team USA invite.
Not sure how I feel about it as I have mixed feelings towards the WBC.

Didn't Holliday
take a nasty fall in one of the games two years ago?

ehh
kinda hope there’s as little amount of players in this WBC as possible….anyone know if Francis is definitely pitching for Canada…i assume he is
Jiri Hudler...our underrated MVP
He's not, but Jimenez will be for the D.R.
and Corpas for Panama. I don’t mind the position players that much, but the pitchers sort of worry me.
yea i agree with ya 100% there

I really hope
that Jimenez doesn’t completely succumb to a delayed Verducci effect. I’m so excited to watch him pitch this year.
But at the same time, pitch counts are very limited in the WBC, and if DR goes out after the first pool, Jimenez will really have pitched basically a few games of long relief.

Francis is Canadian?
Really? Did I already know that?

What's with
you Rockies and your Canadians? First Larry Walker, now Jeff Francis?
Does Denver remind them of home, or something? Some kinda Rocky Mountain solidarity?

Yeah.
But then again, you have to root for the Dodgers…..
"Of course, it’s downright frightening to imagine how two Adam Dunns would turn the double play." - Joe Posnanski
Well
we don’t know if it affects players’ preseason preparation at all since there’s been only 1. Theoretically, baseball is baseball and one can say it shouldn’t. But who knows. The plot is thickened by the fact that Brad Hawpe seems to display mid season changes in performance (a slow start this past season, a solid start and then a dropoff after the ASB the previous two).
ESPN's Baseball Today podcast begs to differ
According to them, an interview with Albert Pujols revealed that after it was over, he was simply exhausted. That level of competition so early in the spring can seriously take it out of a player.

And yet that's not stopping him from playing again this year...
So maybe it’s not quite as bad as he made it out to be.
Let's remember who this is.
It’s Albert Pujols. He’s God with a baseball bat. I’m mentioning HIM because I imagine other players were similarly tired.
Chipper Jones (lol) only played 110 games.
ARod had one of his “worst” seasons since back in Seattle.
Derrek Lee played 50 games.
Despite his durable season, 2006 was the beginning of the end for Dontrelle Willis.
I’m just bringing up conjecture, really.

I for one
would be okay with Brad Hawpe, or anybody on the Rockies really, turning into God with a baseball bat. I agree that overuse is a concern, but maybe Team USA will get bounced early again and Hawpe can just get a few extra swings in. Same goes for CDI, of course, but (please Jeebus) he’ll have to get used to starting 130+ games.
Blast and botheration.
I second that,
only for the Dodgers. Or myself actually. :)
by Brendan Scolari on Jan 13, 2009 1:37 AM MST up reply actions
Didn't Derrek Lee get his wrist broke
on one of those plays where the 1B-man reaches out for the ball and the runner collides with his arm? Because if so, that was obviously not effected by the WBC. And pointing out 3-4 guys having a disappointing season out of 25-30 (however many are on the roster) doesn’t exactly prove your point, obviously not everyone’s going to do great.

I’m just saying I doubt it’ll have much of an effect.

Of course some people have bad years
but if you just picked 25 players randomly you would find a few guys who had off years too. You have to prove that there is a more than average chance that that you have a bad year if you play in the WBC or there’s not much validity to it.

I don’t like it because I won’t see nearly as much talent in Tucson when I’m there during spring training. They would be better off moving it up a month.

Hey, I’d rather watch Jimenez take batting practice at the fields outside Hi Corbett than have him pitch in the WBC. But that’s just mu opinion.
eww...
Having to watch Jimenez taking batting practice anywhere is right up there with watching the Manatees tryouts in Florida for things I wish to do with my time.
Yeah, I suppose... in that Mystery Science Theater sort of way..
And I’m speaking about U-ball’s batting practice here, not the Manatees.

I'm surprised nobdoy's commented on this yet:
Hawpe figures to have more eyes on him this year. He, third baseman Garrett Atkins and first baseman Todd Helton (provided he regains form after missing much of last season with chronic back issues) form the nucleus of a Rockies lineup that must make up for the absence of Matt Holliday, who was traded to the Athletics during the offseason.
What’s actually going to be our saving grace is that the Rockies lineup in 2009 really won’t have a nucleus anymore but be solid average from top to bottom. These three will provide veteraniness, if that’s a quality, so I guess there’s that.
Veteraniness
it’s kind of like “Leadoffitude”
