Minor league fill-ins!

nice to see Bellorian back, he’s a MLB back up, that’s nice to have.

Oh…and she golfs too!:

Beslisle

If Belisle’s never asked to start, that’s a good signing. FIP indicates he was much better than his 7+ ERA. The defense in Cinci is ugly, so that would make sense. Plus, he’s a got a solid 2.18 GB/FB ratio.

Huh, it’s odd that a baseball player’s wife would know how to dress for golf better than a golfer’s wife.

Why is Amy Mickelson dressed like the Pope?

Does anyone actually anticipate Podsednik being on the MLB roster?

I figure the way he’ll have a spot is if we do indeed determine that Gonzalez needs more time in AAA.

The way I see it, we have Podednik, Sullivan, and Gonzalez competing for bench spots.

Scotty Po

Hello everyone, I am new to Purple Row and this is my first post. I am hoping to find some intellegent Rockies discussions…. So there is my intro here is my point on Scott P.

I like bringing him back. With the Mets looking at Corey Sullivan and Willy T. gone that leaves the Rockies with Spilly, Hawpe, Seth Smith and Ian Stewart (more on that later). Scotty Po will bring speed and defense and allow Dexter Fowler to develop in the minor leagues. If Fowler comes in and blows everyone away in spring training and Podsednick doesn’t make the tean then it is not a big financial hit because it was a minor league deal. The Rockies have got some depth on the infield and pitching (did I really just type that??? sounds odd but it is true) Outfield is where they needed a little depth and this moves helps that situation.

I think that Ian Stewart in left would be a good move because of his history of defensive problems at third. Yes he has made some nice plays but he lead both the Rockies and the AAA Sky Sox in errors last year. His minor league stats show that he has a bit of an error issue in the past also. He has a big arm and he is athletic, why not move him to left where his defense will be an asset. Leave Atkins at 3rd and give him some of the money that Holliday turned down to keep him for 5 years. Then if Helton’s health is still a problem Joe Koshanski really has nothing more to prove at the AAA level. Get him some big league AB’s and see what he has got.

What if the hokey pokey is what it is all about after all????

Welcome to the Row

Pods is a good depth add, and like you point out it’s a minor league contract.

on a random note...

you know a trade that would make so much sense but probably wouldn’t happen….why wouldn’t we trade Helton for Michael Young…young is overvalued and makin 12 mil this year and Helton is makin what 16 mil…it would be an even trade for both sides…we could slot him in at 2nd move Atkins to 1st have Stewie at 3rd and we have a ton of OF’s. If you look at Michael Young’s splits hes so overvalued it’s unreal butttt would be a solid 2B for us…plays everyday gets close to 200 hits a yr very reliable….

Doesn't really

make any sense for Texas.

i was thinking that...

but hey they want to unload Young…if Helton could still produce more than he did last year and stay more healthy it wouldn’t be too bad. Young has been declining also in recent years. I agree that texas wouldn’t do it though….if we added like a minor league pitcher they probably would though….but then again who knows since they overvalue him so much.

also...

OPS is the ultimate stat to find out how good a hitter is….Helton in his worst year possible last year(i know he only played half the year) had a higher OPS than Young did, and is only 3 years older. So it would make sense for Texas side…also Chris Davis there 1B right now can move to 3rd where he played some last year and Blaylock is DH’n.

uhhhh

I’d hesitate to call OPS the ultimate stat to find out how good a hitter is, it doesn’t weight OBP nearly as much as it should.

As it stands there really isn’t a single supreme stat to account for everything. eQA is pretty good, VORP is alright, wOBA is pretty easy to calculate as well. OPS is more of a quick and dirty way to see more than just what AVG tells you.

For his pricetag,

How much would you think he’d really be worth in terms of runs/wins added? It’d be a major addition to our payroll, because we’d probably have to pay Young everything and then half of Helton as well. We gain roughly nothing defensively at 2B, only like .020 points of wOBA offensively, we lose what defense Helton adds when he’s healthy, and the fan fallout would be downright apocalyptic.

i agree with a lot of your points

He is very overvalued and overrated SS wise…but moving to 2nd he would be a better than avg 2B esp. on the offensive side…his range is lousy but moving to 2nd would help him.

I believe Young is making $12 this year and Helton is making like what $16.6. I don’t think Texas would have us pay half or more of Helton’s salary.

All in all it’s not gonna happen obviously….just throwing it out there….made some sense to me…

Young has a comparable bat to Barmes and comparable defense to Baker. I fail to see the point of combining the bad qualities of our 2B options into one player and paying him 10 times as much as those options.

Interestingly enough

Michael Young compares to these guys (by age):

Carlos Baerga (937)
Thurman Munson (936)
Barry Larkin (929)
Jose Vidro (923)
Red Kress (921)
Craig Biggio (920)
Julio Franco (910)
Tony Cuccinello (910)
Ray Durham (908)

but seriously him n young are not that close batting wise. Young has hit consistently for about 5-7 years now. Barmes had a few good stretches

Again, I have to disagree with you.

Young had one AWESOME year and around that year he’s been more or less slightly-above-average.

Year OPS+
2001 80
2002 78
2003 97
2004 109
2005 131
2006 108
2007 107
2008 96

Iunno, doesn’t seem terribly consistent to me.

sigh...i cant win with you eh lol

from 2003-2008(6 yrs)…he’s consistently .750-.800 ops, near .300 avg, about 200 hits a year, around 100 runs a year, drives in around 100 a year

how does barmes have a comparable bat is beyond me….Barmes has so many holes in his swing which is a big reason why he’s not an everyday player and defensively i know his range is getting lousy but a move to 2nd would do him good and hasn’t he won a gold glove as well anyway? lol

but yet again all this is just for fun n is a moot point because he’s not coming here lol

Well

I won’t flog this horse any longer. I agree on the Barmes SS range fading, but his 2B range was good. I think he came in gearing to play 2B and not SS so that might have thrown off his reads of balls off bats when he was playing SS. Or something, I don’t know.

I kinda

like the Young for Helton thing in theory. Probably wouldn’t like it if it happened. Michael Young is too lame to give up Helton for. I just like the idea of Stewart getting regular time. Also, if Young is crappy defensively, and Atkins is crappy at 1b defensively, and Stewart is better than Atkins, but unproven and stuff, where does this all leave our infield D?

The biggest detractor from this trade is Helton’s crappy contract runs through 2011 with an option for 2012 (which probably won’t be picked up), while Young’s crappy contract runs through 2013. If people are complaining about too much money being sunk into 1 player, this is really going to piss them off. Also, I feel like Young will decline faster and harder than Helton (unless Helton comes back and totally sucks this season). So this trade would be cool for this season and maybe the next but then would look pretty crappy I think.

Times “crappy” said in this post: 5. New record!

Deals

These are yawner moves for depth purposes. Podesedink might have a few ab’s, but unless a team loses a leadoff hitter and offfers a minor deal, I would expect him in the Springs the whole year. Rusch is a versatile arm that you use while you need it, but it is likely that he or someone like him will be removed from a scrapheap later on in the year.

Enjoyed the Helton/Young discussion. Three years is a significant gap in age. Young had moved to 2nd with the Rangers because he was behind A-rod; I can see why he doesn’t want to step aside for an unproven player. He wants the respect he showed when he came up (btw he used to talk about how he hated 2nd base). Young is a fiery player and highly thought of for his intensity; in Texas minds, that makes him an elite infielder. They would not trade him for an aging player with health concerns nor would they move him for anything less than a top tier prospect. In the ned they will work something out down there to make everyone happy.

Podsednik: AAA player

So if remains in the springs all year, who else do you put in the OF for depth? Do you sacrifice Gonazalez’ or Fowler’s development for the sake of not bringing Pods up? He knows he isn’t starting.

What is killing me

Is reader the comment after articles like this in the Rocky or the Post websites

Dan O’Clown posted:
Here is my replacement for Matt Holliday, Scott Podsednik! And I shall now trade Ubaldo Jimenez for Carlos Silva!”

And I just want to beat my head against a wall out of the sheer stupidity of comments like that.

Makes me appreciate a site like this that much more.

Even the morons here (and I tend to be one of them sometime ;-) ) aren’t just yelling OH MAN THIS TEAM IS GARBAGE FIRE EVERYONE AND SIGN MANNY AND SHEETS AND TRADE FOR SABATHIA, it tends to be good commentary and good discussion, rather than expressing their bitterness on a newspaper website.

What I've never said

I know there are people on both sides of the ownership and management side of the Rockies, and I know its always easier for us who don’t have to run teams and stadiums to interject with our issues, but here’s my take.

O’Dowd came in with a plan in place and that was heavy on fre agents and intent on spending money ie the Helton contract. A couple of years into it they deemed it a failure publically and vowed to revamp and not let distractions keep them from a plan of developing and stockpiling talent. There were the first organization I remember admitting they needed a better plan and put a timetable to it.

While there have been some scouting mistakes as every team in baseball can claim guilt to, the team has remained very true to their plan, and the ownership has increased payroll even though we as fans would like it increased more.

We are not the Royals or Pirates who have been awful franchises forever. We have a team that might struggle to win the division but is awfully competitive and boast of a well-stocked arsenal. The Padres mortgaged their future and they will be some time rebuilding. The Diamondbacks have a heck of a starting duo, but it cost them a big portion of their future bats and where do they need help…bats.

It is fair to question baseball decisions and the quality of them, but to trash the organization for looking for ways to always rebuild your minor league system while building at the major league level is the only way for a mid market team to compete. Minnesota has done it better than anyone and the Rox are certainly on that path.

At least until we trade Webb, which is (unfortunately) looking more and more likely to happen.
