Game Thread: West Virginia at (12) Georgetown
Tonight's matchup between the Mountaineers of West Virginia (13-4) vs. the 12th ranked Hoyas of Georgetown (12-4) is a conference matchup from one of the most talented conferences in men's college basketball.
The Big East has eight teams in the top 25 and are continuing to look good in non-conference games. Georgetown, who at the beginning of the season looked like a contender for the national title, has struggled a little bit as of late, but remains a power packed team. Five of the last six games for the Hoyas have been against teams ranked 13th or higher, a brutal schedule for anyone. The last game in that streched was a hard fought game on the road against no. 3 Duke. Georgetown dropped that game 76-67.
West Virginia is another team that was ranked early in the season, but has sinced dropped off after losing to Marquette and UConn. The Mountaineers barely survived a scare this past Saturday courtesy of South Florida as they blew a 17 point first half lead. They held on to win 62-59.
The key for the West Virginia is their shooting. They have shot an abysmal 34.3% from the field in their last three conference games and have only averaged 56.7 points per game.
Georgetown has won 12 of the last 15 meetings between these two teams going into the game tonight.

Anyone a College Basketball fan?
Anyone watching this game? I know it’s a little early (5 pm for us in the mountain time zone)
I was watching the 2007 WS on MLB Network...
But I think I know how it ends. So I’ll switch over in a few minutes. G-town is one of my favorite college teams.
Keepin' warm by the hot stove season.
I think we should always remember our first time...
Even if it was a travesty, and only lasted four minutes…I mean games!

+1
I hear ya, bro.
Errr…. I mean, HAHA, LOSER!!! ::glances around nervously::

Hoya Saxa!!
I’m a lazy writer ok, I have already admitted to that. Which is why I don’t qualify for the PR writing job. That and they only except East Coast writers, east of the continental divide.

What Rocks!

The Big East...
is good, but it’s nowhere near as good as the media makes it out to be. The ACC is similarly tough, and has the team that will win it all (UNC).
Not that I really care, because I’m a MWC person. The MWC, by the way, is looking really strong and deep this year, with even my CSU Rams mixing it up in the fight for conference supremacy.
Eschew Obfuscation!
Mountain West, eh?
How ’bout ’dem Cougars against my Wildcats? ;-)
Sorry. Couldn’t resist.

What about...
The New Mexico Lobos?

Touche!
Although that came much earlier in the season.

I think they have three freshman who play regularly...
and with Bob Huggins as coach, I am sure they will be good. Its tough to be an “up and comer” in the Big East
I agree with UNC
I think UNC is the best college team out there, but it’s hard to argue the Big East…its a pretty good conference.
5 minutes in....
and you can tell who the more talented team is…
only 6-2 Georgetown, but the only times they haven’t scored were because they made mistakes…WV isn’t taking anything away.
Gtown is winning the hustle game too
More bodies on the floor, seems like more boards too. Although I don’t have the game stats up to verify.
Keepin' warm by the hot stove season.
WVU has evened the game at 9-9..
Showing more hustle now too, maybe they had early national televised game jitters.
Keepin' warm by the hot stove season.
WVU is playing the passing lanes..
Keeping the ball away from Gtowns big man.

Georgetown's known for its centers...
Ewing, Mutombo, Mourning, Iverson (actually he just played big)
Keepin' warm by the hot stove season.
Momentum in WV favor
West Virgina takes their first lead after a Butler 3…G-Town is playing really out of control.
Just under 12 minutes in the first half....
and WV is showing their weakness…4-13 from the field…just over 30%.
Interesting report about Hoya Saxa..
Maybe we should chant Rockies Saxa during our Rocks PR gamethreads?
Keepin' warm by the hot stove season.
Not sure what I think....
about the new three point line in CBB…will one foot really make that big of a difference? I guess we will find out.
I think so..
The old line was just too close, besides I think it opens up the game and creates better shooters for the NBA.
Keepin' warm by the hot stove season.
I agree...
that the line was too short, but one foot…I think they should just adopt the NBA line and go from there.
I just read..
that WVU has the top ranked defense in the Big East.
Keepin' warm by the hot stove season.
Good defense and aggressive offense..
Leads to a sloppy looking game with turnovers.

Maybe they're following your thread?
Because everyone knows the Rockies PurpleRow is the pinnacle of big east basketball information.
Keepin' warm by the hot stove season.
Georgetown needs a second cutter...
On that backdoor cut. And they need to D up the 3.
Keepin' warm by the hot stove season.
West Virginia...
could be a bracket buster, depending how they finish….good defense who may not get a high seed because of how they finish in the Big East with all the other talent.
Just looking at the standings, though, the Big East seems really deep this year...
With 11 teams with 12 wins or more and a month plus to go. Maybe the Mountaineers should be ranked.
They started the season in the top 25, but lost to Marquette...
and are something like 1-4 against ranked teams, but tonight they look really good. Maybe they are starting to reach their potential.
Prince Fielder signed 2yrs $18mill
Wow, that’s a big contract for a young player! How many arbitration years did he have left?
Keepin' warm by the hot stove season.
I'm interested...
to see what kind of adjustments Georgetown is making at halftime…they need to find a way to get inside and use their big man more.
He has 3 years of arb left...
The contract only eliminates two years…I don’t like Prince…he seems selfish.
He's a lot like his dad that way...
The contract was pretty large for that amount of service time. Ryan Howard’s win last year in arbitration obviously influenced the Brewers here.
Exactly...
I think they were scared to death that next year they would have to give him something like 13 mil.
I think Prince's temper tantrum influenced the Brewers...
Now he’s making Matt Holliday money, at a much younger age. How much longer can Prince play NL quality baseball anyways?
Keepin' warm by the hot stove season.
Holliday money for Prince...
That is a big mistake for the Brewers…they should have traded him for Matt Cain.
Not denting the score thus far, though, but still a lot of game left to play.
We’ll see if they can get a comeback started.
The thing I hate about basketball..
Usually the game doesn’t matter until the last two minutes.
Keepin' warm by the hot stove season.
You're right :(
UCLA was a poor choice, not much going on there academically.
Keepin' warm by the hot stove season.
Well
it’s not exactly USC….
"Of course, it’s downright frightening to imagine how two Adam Dunns would turn the double play." - Joe Posnanski
They are attacking a little more on offense...
drawing some fouls and that could spell trouble for W. Virginia.
No inside game..
I’m suprised Gtown hasn’t tried going inside more with their lack of 3pt shooting. 2 for 12 at this point.
Keepin' warm by the hot stove season.
Not right now...
They’ve had too many cold stretches this game where they go minutes at a time without scoring.
Alright, gotta go..
Time to pickup my wife from school and take the son to cub scouts. Thanks for the thread sandlot, I’m sufferring from PR rockies game thread withdrawal syndrome. It’s a difficult time for me right now that I am attempting to mitigate through self medication.
Keepin' warm by the hot stove season.
West Virginia may be a team to follow...
in years to come…very young, but very good defense, and competitive. They will only get better.
I'm always surprised...
at how bad basketball players are at free throws…seriously…if you can’t make 70% of your free throws, what are you doing???
West Virginia is milking...
the clock…a team that averages in the mid 50’s for points…in on the verge of 70. Bad D on Georgetown’s part
Georgetown....
can’t be happy with this performance…West Virginia is a middle of the road Big East team…maybe they are better than people think.
West Virginia wins it.
Final Score 75-58. This game wasn’t even that close…West Virginia was in complete control the whole time.
You're welcome, sorry it was so quiet in here...
You did a great job of keeping up with the thread, though. Thanks a lot.
UGH.......
Somehow, Purple Row always seems to post something that draws my attention…..
That was nasty. My Hoyas got trounced — and I even went out tonight wearing my 2007 Final Four shirt.
UGH….

Dude..
Grabbing some hot girl off the street and forcing her to take a picture with you does not make her your girlfriend. Unless you pay her, then she’s your girlfriend for the length of the contract, per se. Ha, I knew that business law class would come in handy.

Actually,
she’s my sister’s roommate.

Congratulations on breaking the 100 post barrier!!
By my calculation this hasn’t happened since Russ’ mancrush article about Larry Walker on Jan 12. Hopefully PR chooses the writer based on volume of work!!
Keepin' warm by the hot stove season.
I wouldn't label
that piece of work as a “mancrush article.”

You compared Larry Walker to Joe Dimaggio...
And bragged to everyone that he never played for the Pirates.
Keepin' warm by the hot stove season.
A) Baseball-Reference's Player Comparisons do.
B) Only because the comment I responded to mentioned that the Rockies were the worst team in baseball during Walker’s time in the majors, which clearly they weren’t.
If anything, I have a mancrush on Chris Iannetta (since before he was drafted by the Rockies). He’s oh so dreamy.

+1
for the dreaminess of Iannetta, there is nothing sexier than a catcher who can hit for an OPS of 1.021 with RISP!
