Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

Game Thread: West Virginia at (12) Georgetown

Tonight's matchup between the Mountaineers of West Virginia (13-4) vs. the 12th ranked Hoyas of Georgetown (12-4) is a conference matchup from one of the most talented conferences in men's college basketball.

The Big East has eight teams in the top 25 and are continuing to look good in non-conference games.  Georgetown, who at the beginning of the season looked like a contender for the national title, has struggled a little bit as of late, but remains a power packed team.  Five of the last six games for the Hoyas have been against teams ranked 13th or higher, a brutal schedule for anyone.  The last game in that streched was a hard fought game on the road against no. 3 Duke.  Georgetown dropped that game 76-67.

West Virginia is another team that was ranked early in the season, but has sinced dropped off after losing to Marquette and UConn.  The Mountaineers barely survived a scare this past Saturday courtesy of South Florida as they blew a 17 point first half lead.  They held on to win 62-59.

The key for the West Virginia is their shooting.  They have shot an abysmal 34.3% from the field in their last three conference games and have only averaged 56.7 points per game.

Georgetown has won 12 of the last 15 meetings between these two teams going into the game tonight.

Anyone a College Basketball fan?

Anyone watching this game? I know it’s a little early (5 pm for us in the mountain time zone)

by Sandlotkid8 on Jan 22, 2009 4:24 PM MST reply actions

I was watching the 2007 WS on MLB Network...

But I think I know how it ends. So I’ll switch over in a few minutes. G-town is one of my favorite college teams.

The Big East...

is good, but it’s nowhere near as good as the media makes it out to be. The ACC is similarly tough, and has the team that will win it all (UNC).

Not that I really care, because I’m a MWC person. The MWC, by the way, is looking really strong and deep this year, with even my CSU Rams mixing it up in the fight for conference supremacy.

Lot of freshmen on WVU

Are they considered an up and comer?

Keepin' warm by the hot stove season.

by Charlie77 on Jan 22, 2009 5:09 PM MST reply actions

I think they have three freshman who play regularly...

and with Bob Huggins as coach, I am sure they will be good. Its tough to be an “up and comer” in the Big East

by Sandlotkid8 on Jan 22, 2009 5:13 PM MST up reply actions

I agree with UNC

I think UNC is the best college team out there, but it’s hard to argue the Big East…its a pretty good conference.

by Sandlotkid8 on Jan 22, 2009 5:10 PM MST reply actions

5 minutes in....

and you can tell who the more talented team is…
only 6-2 Georgetown, but the only times they haven’t scored were because they made mistakes…WV isn’t taking anything away.

Gtown is winning the hustle game too

More bodies on the floor, seems like more boards too. Although I don’t have the game stats up to verify.

WVU has evened the game at 9-9..

Showing more hustle now too, maybe they had early national televised game jitters.

Good plan

With a 6-11 center, its probably smart to make them shoot from the outside.

about the new three point line in CBB…will one foot really make that big of a difference? I guess we will find out.

by Sandlotkid8 on Jan 22, 2009 5:26 PM MST reply actions

I think so..

The old line was just too close, besides I think it opens up the game and creates better shooters for the NBA.

by Sandlotkid8 on Jan 22, 2009 6:03 PM MST reply actions

He has 3 years of arb left...

The contract only eliminates two years…I don’t like Prince…he seems selfish.

by Sandlotkid8 on Jan 22, 2009 6:05 PM MST reply actions

He's a lot like his dad that way...

The contract was pretty large for that amount of service time. Ryan Howard’s win last year in arbitration obviously influenced the Brewers here.

by Rox Girl on Jan 22, 2009 6:11 PM MST up reply actions

Exactly...

I think they were scared to death that next year they would have to give him something like 13 mil.

by Sandlotkid8 on Jan 22, 2009 6:12 PM MST up reply actions

I think Prince's temper tantrum influenced the Brewers...

Now he’s making Matt Holliday money, at a much younger age. How much longer can Prince play NL quality baseball anyways?
