luis vizcaino: bargain or bust?
Im from Denver, and after Luis Vizcaino suffered the worst season of his career i have trouble believing he can bounce back to have a seasons like he did in 2007.
In 2008 Vizcaino played 34 games less than he did in 2007. He only won 1 game compared to winning 8 games in 2007. When Luis is pitching there is a 1 in 5 chance he will give up a home run just in one inning. His ERA was a disapointing 5.28.
On the flip side stats show he is capable of coming back from a bad season. In 2003
Vizcaino had a 6.39 ERA. In 2004 he bounced back with a 3.75 ERA.
If Luis Vizcaino stays healthy there is a good chance he will have a steller season. Vizcaino is an average middle innings relief pitcher. He has an over powering fast ball and will strike out lots of batters. He will get the job done late ( if he is healthy).
Luis Vizcaino is not consistent and will have a good year or a horrible year.

Here's the thing about Luis...
We traded him, plus somewhere in the neighborhood of $4-5M (I know it was around $8.75M total, but luckily, you have to subtract the Viz’s contract from the books) for a borderline 5th starter that will likely struggle at Coors Field.
With all of that taken into account, plus his stats (9.59 K/9 = good; 1.46 WHIP = mediocre; 10 HR in only 46 IP = downright miserable) point toward bust. That said, at least Marquis isn’t Livan Hernandez (let’s hope not, anyway).

Bust or bounce back for the Viz?
I’ve been saying bounce back. Vizciano isn’t that old (34?), and I have theory on relievers that goes something like this: Over worked, they tired and hurt so not worked much, then bounce back doe to rest. I think Vizciano is the perfect candidate for this as Torre just destroyed the Viz in New York, using him more then any other reliever in 07….leading to a hurt and down 08….where he wasn’t used much. Matt Herges is a Rockies example of this.
Now we trade Viz (5 mil) for Marquis (9mil) and a million cash. I think we need rotation depth as I’m VERY worried about Francis at the moment, but over all, if you have to bring in a player like Marquis and his contract just to get rid of Vizciano….some one some where thinks they messed up.
Thought Clint Hurdle should be fired before it was cool.
I agree that we should expect a bounce back year
from Vizcaino. History does tell us relievers will break down after a heavy year of work and bounce back. That’s why I wasn’t as down on Viz, who has a very solid track record, as most people. He should help the Cubs this season. Yet still Marquis is worth more to the team than Vizcaino at this point for sure, and we’re paying $5mil for the difference.

marquis
lets hope marquis is good at pitching at coors. IT seems like all of the pitchers the rockies have picked up are horrible at coors. Does anyone know about houston Street?
Actually most were Horrible pitchers....period
home or away. Kip Wells, Josh Tower, Mark Redman, were done
But lets not forget, Darren Oliver, or Shawn Estes, both scrap heap guys that did well, or Rodrigo Lopez who was great…before his arm detached. Or Josh the Dragonslayer Fogg and his glory year.
Thought Clint Hurdle should be fired before it was cool.
Bleh
Fogg was never even a 100 ERA+ pitcher. “Beating” the other teams’ aces…yeah…credit the whole team, not Fogg.
Actually my buddy and I called it Josh Fogg Run Support Mode.

One Game
against Seattle comes to mind where he did not have much run support, although you might make the claim that Jamie Moyer had ZERO run support for him as it was a good defense helping Fogg. That, however, is the only instance that I can remember him pitching very well.

The trade
was still a net benefit, come on. Marquis is worth more as a starter than Vizcaino is as a reliever. We don’t have the deepest pen, but now our starting ranks go farther.
