Monday Rockpile: Contract Watch for Dan O'Dowd and Jim Tracy

Saunders: Rockies' offseason has numerous numbers challenges - The Denver Post
Patrick Saunders believes Dan O'Dowd and Jim Tracy will receive new contracts this week, and then he provides them three numbers to work on: RISP, # of K's, and team ERA. One needs to go up, one needs to go down, and the last one can hopefully stay in the same ballpark.

Sheeeeeeeesh...

Herrera is downright offensive offensively.

How about McKenry though? Do you think, especially with the possible departure of Torrealba, that he sees time at the big league level in 2010?

Just an average guy with exceptional hair. Nothing more, nothing less.

I have one of those intangible "good feelings" about McKenry

Considering our apparently low expectations of catchers he sounds like he’s very much in the frame to play 2nd fiddle to CDI. Can anyone explain why this might not be the case?

by biondino on Oct 19, 2009 8:48 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

He definitely projects to be an MLB backup at least

but if he started on the 25-man in April, he would probably be overmatched offensively (same thing I thought about Dex). It wouldn’t really hurt the team being the backup, plus he’s very good defensively. But if we want him to do well with the bat at the MLB level, he probably needs more time in the minors.

I'm curious about Dex

Does he still project to be good enough from the left side of the plate to continue switch hitting? Your overmatched comment got me thinking a little. His line against RHP (which I assume all came from that side of the plate) in 360 PA – .240/.357/.372 – not exactly stellar. I wonder if this is really better than if he would just stay on the other side. Clearly he has a lot of room to grow. Thoughts?

by Hizilla on Oct 19, 2009 10:37 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's not really something one can project from stats

He’s seen so few PA’s vs. lefties even in his minor league career. It’s up to the coaching staff and the org’s development people to judge how he’s coming along. The counterfactual is hard to figure for real life—if they’d left him alone from age 18, would have done better against RHP than the line you quoted? Probably. Would he do better if he stopped switch-hitting next year? Much harder to say. There’d be an adjustment period.

He actually showed more power from the left side until Tulsa.

So there’s definitely still time for him to come around from the left side. .357/.372 isn’t horrible for a guy making the jump from AA. OTOH, it wouldn’t be the first time someone has screwed up a player by trying to teach them to switch hit in the minors (see the Dodgers’ 1st base coach).

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

Yea - maybe I should have made that clear

Do the people who know more than I do about hitting approach and swing mechanics think that he can still be a successful switch hitter down the road? Even hitting righty he’s a pretty nice compliment to CarGo/Seth/Brad

by Hizilla on Oct 19, 2009 10:52 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

i dont know a lot about hitting mechanics

Though he did appear to me to have a more fundamentally sound and consistent rh swing than lh. He has improved all things considered each year from the left side, and he was a solid mlb contributor overall despite the jump from AA and relative newness to switch hitting

What I’m saying is, I’m inclined to believe it will be worth it to keep working on his switch hitting. I think he will improve enough to make it an asset.

It's kind of an interesting topic

There are those in the “Trade Brad and get some value while we can because he is replaceable” camp (i.e. Me); and then those in the “Brad’s still a good hitter and we like him, we should keep him for one more year” camp (i.e. You).
I definitely see value in both, and keeping him would not be the worst thing in the world. The only thing I would really take issue with is if he is truly off the table and they wouldn’t even listen to offers, as the Cowboy kind of makes it kind of sounds like – although I would imagine that alot of that is posturing, as there are a number of teams out there that i’m sure would love to have Brad on a 1yr/$7.5M deal.

My issue with trading Hawpe

is that I think its somewhat premature. I would like to see how he does early on in the season. He certainly ought to be able to compete for a starting job, given his veteran status. He seems very steady and might be a great leader that just goes about it quietly. I say we should keep him at least until the July trade deadline, and then depending on what happens, re-evaluate. I do like Tracy’s idea that he could be kept to play 1st base, assuming they don’t tender Atty.

If one wanted to really parse DOD’s words, he said they no “desire” to trade him, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t depending on the offer.

I probably read too much into that. I don’t really see them getting a Righthanded Carlos Gonzalez (what Tracy says they would need to trade him) – but my opinion isn’t really worth much.
I guess the reason I advocate trading him now stems to how I felt like they waited too long for Garrett, and how he’ll most likely be non-tendered. In all honesty, you’re right Hawpe’s value probably won’t decline in 4 months next year – I just feel like the return would be guaranteed to be smaller.
And in retrospect on Atkins, at the time they could have gotten value for him, I do understand that they weren’t ready to hand the keys to Stewart.

I'm torn on this

my basic inclination is similar to the Hizilla argument, that we should trade him now while we can get something (anything) for him; and also of course because I’d like to see if Seth Smith is as good as we think he might be. But of course, that runs the big risk of being wrong on Smith (and there are plenty of warning signs), because burning a guy capable of all-star performance isn’t a mistake you easily recover from, especially one who is on a reasonable deal. And particularly because our window is open right now.

I also think the “we’re not trading him” is all posturing. Part, to keep the “fire sale” flag from going up, and also part to protect the ego of a guy that was an all-star and then got benched. PR move, no big deal.

I think/hope DOD learned his lesson with respect to sitting on his hands after a playoff run, and will be proactive this offseason. Not saying that a ton of changes should/need to be made, but everything should be explored. We have a great core, but championships are found in the fine tuning.

As much as I like Seth Smith

I do have the same concern, that maybe he’s not a full-time guy.
I think that Murton and Smith could potentially platoon LF and really not lose much.

Another point to keeping an overly crowded outfield

is injury protection. If any of these players go down to injury, another one can fill the spot, without having to bring up someone from AAA, especially, if God forbid, the injury happens before September callups.

I've been driving the "trade Hawpe" bandwagon since early May (when he was mashing)...

and I said that his value would never be higher.

Do the Rockies make the postseason if they trade Hawpe around the same time as Tracy takes over? In my opinion, yes, but that’s just me.

In any case, Hawpe is going to lose value every day the season goes on next year. He is the team’s fourth best outfielder when both offense and defense are considered…and I really hope that O’Dowd can see that—Hawpe should very much be on the trading block and if O’Dowd gets a nice proposal (set-up man plus a B prospect) he should take it.

It will be hard for him to do

If he isn’t playing everyday. Oh well, if Carlos had mashed within the first week or two of being called up, instead of a month later, we would have traded him.

by mkorpal on Oct 19, 2009 4:10 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's the thing though...

I’m pretty sure that O’Dowd wouldn’t have traded him. The front office seems to be very attached to Gen R guys and I doubt that a hot streak by CarGo would have changed his mind.

by Jeff Aberle on Oct 19, 2009 4:12 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well

I would think the whole purpose of bringing up Carlos was to get the stud prospect going and work on trading the expensive vet (considering we were in a sell mode at the time). The problem is, the stud prospect started out as the dud prospect, and the team got too hot to trade a vet away.

Besides, there isn’t much of Gen R left anyway.

There is something to be said

for having veteran presence in the clubhouse. Maybe there’s more of that involved than meets the eye. Smith was with the team during the 07 run, but maybe he’s just not ready to be a full time starter.

If you are refereing to the report

That they will not trade Hawpe, I think it is mostly due to the difficulty in trading him. I would imagine that the front office would not want to say anything that would strain relations (any further, depending on how well Hawpe took the benching in the postseason). You have to say these things even if they plan on shopping him. Keep in mind Dan said almost the exact same thing about Holliday last year, a month before he aggressively shopped him around.

I was just commenting that Smith might be in some hot water for his comments. Hawpe and Marquis both never said anything publicly that was less than professional, about their respective benchings.

And who’s to say, if had faced Pedro in Game 3, Hawpe might very well have started…

The question is

Can they get anything for him at all. The financial climate is quite a bit different now than it was last year. There are top end outfielders available in Bay and Holliday for the big rich clubs to play with, and a ton of guys like Hawpe for the smaller market teams to go after. The question is, who will be willing to give up both prospects and pay they guy when they can get equal value from the FA market.

The people who post there

are sabr heads.
Lots of sabr heads make the same arguments over and over, and they’re all based on numbers. If you don’t want to use obscure variables to have what they feel is an “educated” discussion, they will try to discredit the other persons opinion.
With Renck, they have to stoop to picking on his spelling or lack of editing in his columns.

If your opinion varies from what I believe, I would only ask you to look at some of the stats you guys throw out for others.
wOBA? Who cares.
BABIP? Same thing. Who cares.
9 runs equals an expected “win”?
VORP? When a value is made-up so we can determine how much better than that value a “replacement player” is, its BS IMO.

They’re all made up stats that allow others to define what some know just by their observations. The real key is to take both stats and observations into account, but some can’t do the observations part and project how a player will develop. How many times do people throw out SSS? Its because they don’t have enough stats to define the ability of a player. A scout, or even a fan, has to determine a players upside, without benefit of years of stats, but to others that isn’t good enough. When it suits them to use a variable they have determined is viable, then YOU are wrong if you don’t subscribe to the same theory.

Just my $.02 and no, I’m not attacking the numbers crowd.

The oxen are slow, but the earth is patient.

i dont want a war (no pun intended)

But I’m compelled to ask – do you feel that it is at all possible for statistical evaluation to improve in accuracy over the course of decades, or do you think the original stats are the most accurate (batting average for example). Or are you fully in the scout’s corner far from stats? I’m unfamilar with your stance. I certainly understand your thoughts on vorp or other seemingly mystical stats with vague definitions, but I’m curious about your hesitancy to accept woba or babip, which are really just different ways of using stats that have existed for decades

As it is, I’m happy we have a community of both stat heads and those that refuse to buy in. Having a diverse community is more fun and rewarding

I wasn’t going to post here anymore, but this one got me. Um…no you don’t. This blog has become all about the stat head/Sabr people, and any other view is pretty unwelcomed any more.

Even questioning of those people or any of their stats is unwelcomed now. There is little to no give an take. Granted, mine are specifically INTENDED to be stat-guy articles, but I feel I try to give the analysis in terms of both the old-school numbers and the new-school numbers. PF does an excellent job of writing his NLWR and KYF articles to include the traditional numbers, but also include the advanced as well.

It seems that the mere inclusion of wOBA or WAR or FIP is threatening enough to some to be viewed as an attack. It’s not.

Now, being the stathead on this site who’s gotten into this the most with you in the past, I think I’ve done a damn fine job of lightening my tone and trying to cater to both schools of thought. If you don’t agree with this, you’re welcome to say as such, but to accuse myself and the writers on this website of trying to make it into a SABR haven is just wrong. Flat out wrong. I regularly read and comment on websites where the non-SABR crowd is flat out mocked. This isn’t it, I promise you that. We are not having e-meetings where we try and turn everything into SABR and nothing else. Just because a few of our more vocal posters (including myself) are SABR-inclined does NOT mean that this site is SABR only.

So there are a few people on this site that need to knock off this martyr crap, because these people are being JUST as condescending to the SABR people as they are to the Non. And likewise goes to the SABR crowd – knock off the crap.

This site is awesome. We’re making massive strides in general. Part of making these strides is having coverage that involves advanced metrics, and parts of the strides are being able to look back and cater to the more traditional crowd. I feel the articles, for the most part, do a good job of this. Let’s just try to enjoy it rather than play blame games and cry out that one viewpoint isn’t being respected.

Please.

I'm surprised at the tone

from Redhawk and Teekalong, which seems to imply that they’re abused around here. I haven’t been around so much the last month (in part because there were so many posts it became very difficult to keep up with), did something change?

Arguments around here get heated, but more in the sense of getting animated than being abusive, to me. There seems to me to be less rudeness here than just about any other internet forum. Granted, the internet in general sets a pretty low bar, but considering how quickly we dash off comments, it seems like we’re doing a pretty good job at PR.

There are numbers guys and there are numbers guys, too. It’s not as if people don’t disagree all the time about how to interpret the numbers.

I think I somewhat understand what Redhawk and Teekalong are

feeling. When one is not a stathead, to the degree that some here are, it makes the debate about players awfully difficult to have. It’s a feeling of, look its new “MATH” therefore infallible.

Also, from some reason, Rockies fans, seem to really LIKE all the players. You don’t hear about most of them being jerks or “cancers” in the clubhouse. So the idea of getting rid of or relegating a player to a lesser role based on “math” seems unfair. And because its “math” you can’t argue against it.

“Math” isn’t all there is to baseball. Its almost as though “math” is replacing the eyes and ears, and potentially eliminates a player from consideration because his ‘math" in one area isn’t as strong as in another.

And then some of us, just like watching the players play and the managers manage.

I know that was a bit rambling, but that’s how I see it.

this post actually explains partly why im a stats person

I like these players. I am emotionally attached to the team and its players. Stats give me a chance to remove emotion that could cloud my judgement in analyzing things. Emotions, first impressions and perspective can cloud reality, IMO. I do take a black and white approach too much though.

this is precisely why I’m starting to embrace the numbers somewhat. Objectivity isn’t a bad thing at all, and the stats are helpful in keeping that in mind.

it was actually relief pitchers that pushed me over the edge

Though as engineer, I was likely destined to arrive eventually. Relief pitchers might debut with several bad outings, sealing fans’ opinions on them. Even twelve straight scoreless innings can’t shake it. For example, morales had 12 scoreless outings in June, allowing three hits. No one remembered that this month. Then I joined PR and I took off.

I don't know if I feel outnumbered or anything

And I certainly don’t feel abused. Its all good. I do think a majority of the regular writers/posters are definitely on the stats side of the debate, but so be it. Sometimes the rhetoric gets ratcheted up over topics where the stats/traditional view can be disputed on both sides, and that’s the way it should be. And sometimes its just fun to argue. I wouldn’t be here if all I read was what I already thought.

Here's a question...

When a player does not perform according to the statistics, positively or negatively, what kind of judgment is made about the player, from a “stathead” perspective?

Frequently

the judgment is that the player is not playing to his normal standards (set by the statistics) and thus he will either improve or fall back. The question becomes when will such change happen and here is where things get hairy. No one can truly predict when something will happen but they can suggest that it will based on “evidence” they have.

Right...

and I did point out that it’s not a black and white issue. Statheads watch ballgames and make subjective observations, non-statheads refer to stats and make objective observations.

In the end though, we each have out official fallback positions, which tend to be in line with our objective vs. subjective inclinations.

by BroJB on Oct 19, 2009 4:14 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I sacrificed clarity for brevity, so I'll restate:

Statheads do sometimes watch ballgames and make subjective observations, non-statheads do sometimes refer to stats and make objective observations.

That should be clearer. Thanks for the heads up.

Not to join a fight that I'm not a part of...

but at some point when there are several different people who feel that they are attacked if they disagree with the “stat heads” then there has to be some legitimacy to it. Maybe people are sensitive to it, or maybe they are overreacting to a sense of a tone, but the leaders of this page have to realize that as the people who run this page, there can be a sense of elitism that you aren’t meaning there to be…
I don’t know if that makes sense, but my main point is that sometimes, intentional or unintentional, there seems to be a “we are right because we know more about baseball than you do” attitude from some of the people who run this site. I am sure it is unintentional, but I think you should be aware.

One thought

as someone who has bought in to much of the value of stat analysis (though not completely) I still don’t get the love for BABIP. Leaving aside how incredibly imperfect the raw numbers that drive the stat are (no difference between texas leaguer or rope off the wall), isn’t this really only a tool for long-term projection or historical analysis? I mean, we always hear that someone’s BABIP is “unsustainable” but it never seems to work itself out in a short term. I.e., its fair to say that Player X with BABIP of .400 is probably not going to maintain that stat for his career…but he might for an extended period of time, like say for an entire playoff push in September. And, therefore, trying to make short-term decisions based on the stat seems to me to be pretty reckless.

I don’t know if my critique here makes sense. I think the stat is somewhat useful from a 30,000 feet prospective. Just curious why some folks are so devoted to it. Legitimately interested in reasonable debate on this, not trying to flame.

its more of a small piece of analysis

That shouldn’t stand alone. It may supplement thoughts you see with your eyes or supplement other stats. But it doesn’t say a whole lot valuable, especially if you don’t look at the line drive rates etc associated with it

about BA

BA is one stat. Only one, that tells how a player is playing. During the argument between Redhawk and others (I side with Redhawk BTW), the discussion turned to "BA doesn’t account for the difference in hits, only that hits were made. Admittedly, that is a paraphrase of the actual post, but I’m too lazy to look up the correct quote. On the surface, the statement is correct, but by looking at SLG% a more accurate representation of the production of the batter is attained.
OBP? A BB is never as good as a hit, yet OBP treats them both the same, and also devalues extrabase hits, but most overlook that fact. OPS gets it right IMO.

To define how I look at stats, I will point this out. I like reading DavidOhno’s posts. They tend to mix observations in with stats in a way that makes sense. To correlate the two philosphies is the key to understanding baseball. Sabr people lose that fact IMO.

BTW, David hasn’t approved this message, but I did stay at a HolidayInn last night… :)

“ops gets it right, IMO”
“a walk is never as good as a hit”
I hear you put here. That’s why I don’t understand your statement
“woba? Who cares?

Simplistically, woba is the same concept as ops, except it values a hit less than a single, which as you noted, is incorrectly forgotten in obp, and by consequence, ops. From your fundamental base of understanding, I think you ought to reconsider woba. It is essentially ops, only improved some

typo

It values a walk (not hit) as less than a single. It also changes weights with slugging, as a double is not quite twice as valuable as a single

I charted OPS vs wOBA for the season at one point

there is really almost no difference, provided you understand the scaling. You can use OPS and wOBA interchangeably, wOBA is just slightly more accurate.

Linear weights are awesome.

it wont really make much difference in most cases

But it sure will if you’re comparing guys with the same ops, yet one with a high obp/low slg vs one with a low obp/high slg

compare two .800 OPS guys

I was disappointed that they didn’t have more different wOBA’s

If I recall correctly, the differences really show up once you get beyond .900-.950 OPS, into the elite OPS levels.

Well,

Observation is good and all if you see every pitch in every game played. But, if you can’t, then you need the stats to asses a players value. Without looking at a single stat, tell me if Brian Roberts is a better option than Clint Barmes, and who was better at earning their salary. Or tell me if Chacin is the better prospect, or is it Friedrich.

And it’s not like they have pulled the stats out of their ass. WwOBA gives every plate appearance by a player a specific value depending on the outcome. It’s not quite made up (well, maybe the weight of the outcome, but it’s generally accepted that a homerun is more valuable than a strikeout)

by mkorpal on Oct 19, 2009 12:09 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tell me about what the stats say

about a clubhouse cancer like Milton Bradley?

Based on stats only, most here want to get rid of Hawpe. Then the club, via the sportswriters, lets fans know that they value Hawpe’s clubhouse leadership, which cannot be quantified.

See the problem now? There are a lot of things about baseball that stats don’t cover, but statheads want to make their teams up using stats alone…
Its one variable, but its not the only variable.

The oxen are slow, but the earth is patient.

by rockieprogress on Oct 19, 2009 12:47 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

and most GMs recognize that

yeah, stats guys are going to build their teams based on production and numbers. Dusty Baker is going to build his team based on scrap and hustle and speed and stick-to-it-iveness.

GMs balance the viewpoints and take it all into consideration.

The issue is that even though Stats aren’t the only variable, they are still a very important one, and to dismiss them is just as foolish as to claim them as the end-all and such.

Another thought on stats

how much of the models were built on the steroid-era game, and how does that affect things going forward?

I think of this particularly in terms of OPS, where the big hits are maximum rewards and the PHLP-style “speed game” is marginalized. Also, of course, pure BA is marginalized. I wonder if regression from so many dudes crushing so many bombs will impact the view on OPS, with additional value being placed on “manufacturing” runs?

Again, just thinking out loud.

by Teekalong on Oct 19, 2009 1:03 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

As usual, it depends

Let’s be straight here—there are huge differences between individuals when it comes to use of stats. Some of the biggest abusers of stats are traditional sportswriters. (Never mind that a lot of the most active SABR members are very much NOT stat guys, and are more historians and biographers.)

So, how does the influence of the so-called steroid era influence things? It depends on the person. Just because someone is in to stats doesn’t mean they’re good at accounting for context.

Likewise, just because someone was playing/following baseball when the Cardinals were said to be running their way to pennants doesn’t mean they’re a good judge of context, and have a good grasp on the relative merits of the running game or bunts/hit and run plays.

FWIW, a lot of the usual bits of “stathead orthodoxy” came from guys like Pete Palmer and Bill James, who were doing their work before the steroids era. James was a huge Whitey Herzog fan, in fact, so he’s well aware of those 80’s Cardinals teams.

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

by FooMan on Oct 19, 2009 1:35 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Clarification

So, to be clear…the models were NOT built on the stats of the steroid era, they were built of data from a lot of eras (the work was largely done in the 70’s and 80’s. If they’re decent models, they work (or fail to work, depending on your point of view) in multiple eras. Good models can account for changing contexts (“run environments,” in the lingo).

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

As recently as 1995, the Yankees were pulling in only 23,360 per game. But as soon as they started winning, the Yankee fans started crawling out from under rocks. Those aren’t “fans” – those are the baseball equivalent of Jonas Brothers groupies.

absolutely yes

I love Todd Helton, you know I love Todd Helton, but I would take Teixeira every day and twice on Sunday. His overall game is better than Helton’s, and a lot of that is because Helton is 36.

In their primes? That’s a much tougher conversation to have.

I can't remember every problem I had with it but I never bought into the National Pride thing.

When the D.R. lost people said the country was devistated. If it mttered so much how come Albert the best player in baseball Pujols was not on the team.

Plus if it’s National Pride, how come ARod can decide on a whim which team he was going to play for. (D.R. or U.S.)

There was also some rule about how if it got to the 12th the innings would start with runners on first and second. Can you imagine if today’s game in the 12th started with runners on first and sencond.

That does not even get into injuries and how players are used.

I'm still hoping to wake up from that nightmare I had about the 9th inning of Game 4.

no, it's fine, you're allowed to not like it

I wish everyone had more national pride, or there was a way to do it so that the players weren’t being all used up by the end of the season.

and/or Davey Johnson wasn’t managing team USA

yeah, this is huge

I understand injury, etc. But I do think USA tossed out a pretty decent team, even if they were played totally wrong.

My USA alignment was:

C: McCann/Iannetta, the platoon was fine and fair.
1B: Youkilis
2B: Brian Roberts (although I didn’t expect Pedroia to suck as much as he did, I was ok with him from the getgo)
SS: Jeter
3B: Wright
LF: Braun
CF: Grandy/Victorino, again, no problems with either here
RF: DeRosa/Victorino
DH: Dunn

When injury struck, I wanted

C: Same
1B: Jeter – suck it up, big guy, we need someone who can field
2B: Roberts
SS: Rollins
3B: Same
LF: Same
CF: Same
RF: Same
DH: Dunn

DHing Rollins was simply unacceptable.
