Updated Quick & Dirty Cut List!
The people we cut....
Omar Q...because Barmes is better with a glove and bat. (Young needs seasoning)
Garrett Atkins... Stewart offense and D is good enough right now and we got a good back-up in McCoy
Hawpe or Giambi... we need to cut only one, I prefer cutting Giambi because Hawpe is younger and can play 1B
Alan Embree ....it's obvious
Matt Herges.... think about retirement please
The people we resign...
Yorvit Torreabla..... 2009 is reason enough to exercise a cheap $4mil option
Jason Marquis....I think Coors works great for him but if he doesn't want to stay fine. Hello Rockies Rookie Jholy Chacin (Christian Fredrich)!
Huston Street...I think he's out of our price range (secretly, I hope we don't sign him so I win the bet with RMN)
Bottom line: I think there is a legitimate case to be made that the Rockies have the most talented and balance, pitching rotation and line-up in the majors come 2010 if not in the whole NL West. All for under $80 mil :)

I would think Street would be more in the price range than Marquis

And I don't want to over pay Marquis for the first half of this year
I guess that carries to Torrealba. $4 million may be cheap for September 09 Yorvit, it’s a heckuva lot for 2008 Yorvit.

Happy to overpay Marquis for the first half
As long as we can then pay him league minimum for the second half, when he turns into a replacement player anyway :)

Well, I have numerous problems with this list, but the one I'll focus on now...
is the fact that the Rockies will be paying at the least $10 million extra just to keep the players they already have on the roster that are arbitration eligible. In other words, with your suggestions there’s no way we’re keeping the payroll under $85-90 million.
Next week in my comprehensive offseason outlook I’ll touch on all of these points but I’ll just say that you are a little off base with your salary estimates and your other lists.

How are you coming up with $85-90 from the above?
I read him as saying: keep Hawpe, resign Torrealba, let Marquis go (even though he likes him), and let Street go (which is what I think he’s suggesting). If that’s the case, they can come in at $75M again if they really scrimp on other parts of the roster.
Actually, since he hasn’t mentioned Betancourt, I think they can do the above and keep Street (if Street gets an expected $7.5-8M via arb or extension for 2010). There won’t really be much left to fill out the pen, sign some starting pitcher insurance, or look for corner INF depth, but it could be done.
Are your numbers coming out differently? What are coming up with for arb? Most of these guys are 1st year; De La Rosa seems most difficult to handicap.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

Average arbitration raise from 2008-2009: 172%
Rockies arbitration cases: 13 (10 of which will actually happen)—meaning an extra $10 or so million to 2010’s payroll at least up from this year (especially if Street is resigned at a high number and if Betancourt is kept).
I read that he was recommending resigning Marquis (at least, he’s under the “re-sign” list), so this pushes the projected salary even higher than that.

Jabberwocky
I’m looking forward towards your analysis next week. I’ll put together my crash course ideal roster for 2010 by Friday night with the financial considerations. But I got two questions…
1.How do you feel about the Rockies 1B situation outside of Todd?
2.Is it just me or is there no depth in our farm system when it comes to good catchers? (that’s why I say keep Yorvit)
by lizardlad01 on Oct 22, 2009 12:43 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Okay:
1. Ideally, this is a position that could be filled by Hawpe as backup 1B/fourth outfielder—but I’m not sure how realistic this is for Hawpe to make the transition back to first base.
2. Catchers the Rockies have in the minor leagues that are considered “good” prospects: Willin Rosario (High A last year) and Michael McKenry—the latter of which would probably be the backup sometime next year if Torrealba is not back. That’s two more good catching prospects than many systems have.
The likely fall-back solution in this case (at least until McKenry is ready) would be Paul Phillips, who isn’t terrible as a 1-2 starts a week guy. Torrealba is a better player than Phillips, but not THAT much better to give him $4 million.

Torrealba is a better player than Phillips, but not THAT much better to give him $4 million.
which has pretty much been the word from the insiders, Ringolsby, etc

ok, Yorvit out, Philips in
than the payroll is at $68.375 + coaches’ salaries = ~$71.

oh looking at the game by game log
I think Ianetta is a better game calling catcher than Torreabla. Maybe we should sign Ianetta to a multi-year deal. My hypothesis on why Ianetta a better catcher is because he relies on walks to get on base rather than hits. If a catcher know the batter zone that well than he obviously know how to call a good game.

Just to clarify
I’ll pay you $20 if Street signs a multi-year deal or a one year deal with a club option before April 1, 2010.
The odds are looking wickedly in your favor :(

Yorvit's Salary is out
so the payroll is about ~$70.
What do you think about this hypothesis for the best game calling catcher…
OBP-AVG=X/ AVG.
The higher X is the better the catcher is at calling games, the lower X is the worst he is at calling games. Where would you get the data for that…any ideas? You would also have to isolate variables such as age, injuries, weather, etc to get a good idea.
Long story short…Ianetta is the best catcher by this metric.
by lizardlad01 on Oct 23, 2009 12:27 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
ehhhhhhhhhh
trying to put metrics on game calling isn’t a really good idea
if I have a pitcher who can’t hit water if he fell out of a boat, it’s not gonna do much to have a good or bad game calling catcher.
Hope got in my eyes

I AM NOT STARTING THE CATCHER ARGUMENT YET AGAIN
Ringolsby suggested that the $4M option will just be too much for the team.
Q is an obvious cut. McCoy can be just as effective, he’s just as tall, and is right handed.
Garrett is a definite Cut option. He’s just terrible out loud.
Embree and Herges, we’re under no obligation toward. They’ll both file for FA.
I think we’re all on the same page on Marquis.
I’m interested that you consider Hawpe and Giambi as being the same, in the sense of “one or the other” simply because their situations are far different.

The Hawpe & Giambi
being the same, I mean in the since of back-up first base man. I don’t know how easy it is to get a good 1b but the Rockies don’t have any MLB-ready ones right now.
Personally, I rather trade Hawpe for prospects and have Giambi be the back-up 1b man.

I don't see the Rockies actually using Hawpe as a backup 1B.
I don’t know why, I just don’t.

I agree with this. I just don't know if Giambi will comeback for a full season pinch hitter/occasional starter role.
And I think the market for Hawpe will be better than some expect.

I must say
That “cut” is the wrong term to use here. This isn’t the NFL, where any player can be cut at any time and disappear. For guys like Atkins and Q, they will not be tenured a contract. And why would you cut Hawpe? He already has a contract. We would be paying 7 million bucks for him to play else where.
Also, I would suggest using Cots to calculate salaries. They actually describe buyouts, option, and bonuses. http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2005/01/colorado-rockies.html

Your projected salary numbers for 2010 are pretty inaccurate on the low side...
which allows your projected payroll to be pretty low. Check out my FP post for my projections.
