I remember the days when I thought O'Dowd was a bumbling fool
but he’s made some excellent moves and given us a young, studly core. Keep it up buddy.
So you're telling me there's a chance. Yeah!

he kind of was for a few years
He panicked and made quick moves far too often in his early tenure. Criticism was warranted. But he might have done the best job of any gm in the last twelve months

I can honestly say....
I’ve always been a fan of the guy. The worst deal he ever made (Figgins for Bartee) was bad, but not horrible, and the 2nd worst move (Gerut/Bard for Cruz) hasn’t really come back to bite us as Gerut and Bard are really just journeymen types.
OTOH, the list of great deals he’s made — often with financial limitations and the imperative to move contracts — could fill up a long post.
He’s also been able to lock down guys like Tulo to affordable long term deals and has hung on to our best young talent.
If he was given unlimited NY Yankee resources, one could only imagine the juggernaut he’d have created. In the meantime, what’s he’s done here is pretty damn amazing.
Agreed
I think his best quality is that he is a quick learner. He tried some things early on that didn’t work, so he tried something else.

Awesome.
make some good off season moves Dan, and let’s get back to October.

I just have to say
that I REALLY miss game threads on the Row… I mean this stuff is good and all, but has the stink of offseason :( Anyway, good move, and thanks for giving me a reason to keep checking PR.
I feel the same way :(
I hope we have game threads during the world series. Can someone tell us what happens to PR during the winter and when does spring training start? thanks
we will still be posting at least one, hopefully two, articles per day
Covering hot stove, general news, features etc. I don’t have the schedule in front of me, but pitchers and catcrea generally report mid February with the first games a coupor weeks later

I'm guessing 2/13 for pitchers and catchers
and 3/2 for first game

Good news
A well deserved extension. Let’s hope he can continue the string of good deals this offseason.
Dan (the man) O'Dowd!
Good. He added almost 30 million bucks of value to the rotation this year, and only gave up a prospect and a crappy reliever. The guy has been golden lately.
For a second there I was thinking
prospect + crappy reliever = Holliday and Fuentes. Then I stopped being insane :)
oh Patrick
I know Jason smith played for us three years ago and that o’dowd went on a Jason binge, but Jason smith wasn’t the lhp we got from Oakland in the holliday deal

i remember when Jason Smith played for us
he hit like 4 dingers in a week or something like that…or maybe it was 2 in one game…I don’t remember.
Hope got in my eyes

it was two in a game at petco
I remember reading it at the community computer in my bucharest hostel. Unreal

I posted the same thing on his online article.
Then I freaked out when I realized it made me what I hate, a Denver Post commenter.
I had kind of forgotten the DOD role in the Hurdle/Tracy decision
You always kind of assume the owners are driving those calls, but to the extent that DOD made the decision, it certainly had as much impact as the player moves in 2009. You could make a case for DOD as MVP this year – close to perfect on decisionmaking, particularly on the pitching side.

Well done, props to the Monforts for getting it right
And to DOD for assembling a really strong ballclub with endless possibilities going forward. Now, it’s time to get back to work. We’ve got a division championship to win.
