Monday Rockpile: Projecting pitchers, Bill James-style
Not much news on the Rockies out there. If you're an Indians fan, you can discuss hiring Manny Acta as manager. Or if you're a Cardinals fan, there's a rumor going around that Mark McGwire will be the new hitting coach for the team. Seems it isn't a rumor anymore. That's ripe for discussion. But still no news on the Rockies. Instead, I give you the Bill James' 2010 projections for Colorado Rockies pitchers from 2009:

If you want to compare these projections to 2009's, go here. These ones are always fun to look at because after the season you can go back and laugh at how conservative they are.
Again, thank ACTA Sports for the sneak preview at these projections. If you want the entire set of projections and much more you can purchase the book here.

Are the Bill James projections always so rough, or do they just expect a regression something ugly for the starters?

A lot of these projection systems
don’t provide very sexy numbers.
They also never project breakout seasons (which makes a ton of sense).

James is usually fairly optimistic for hitters but rough on pitchers
Projection systems never project anything great as far as W/L, and given dlr, ubaldo and hammel had career years, they are projected to regress

Iwamura
Let me just put out there what we’re all thinking: the Rockies should, if he is bought out, sign Akinori Iwamura. Or, if the Rays pick up his option, they should trade Chris Nelson for Iwamura. Barmes gave some nice defense and some power at second, but Iwamura is a good defender, can play multiple positions, and has a career OBP 53 points higher than Barmes’.
Lone goal of the off-season: acquire Iwamura.
I could be for or against this
though I still think EY2 should really be given the opportunity.
However, one of the bigger problems with Iwamura is that he’s left handed, which means 3/5 of the infield and 2/3 of the OF will be left handed.
"These are thin mints. I put them in the freezer. My favorites. So good."
--Reds outfielder Adam Dunn, on the girl scout cookies he keeps in his locker
Good Point
And I guess trading Hawpe doesn’t change that since Seth Smith would probably get more ABs. Iwamura just seems like a good fit based on batting profile, salary and that – if he likes Tampa – he’d probably love Denver. In rebuttal, it worked for the Phillies?
except only one of those lh bats struggled against lhp
Two are switch hitters, and iirc, utley and ibanez were every bit as good if not better against lhp.

Iwamura is an average defender at best and his bat really isn't that impressive
What he adds in OBP he detracts in defensive range.
If we’re not going to go for gusto, we might as well let the in-house options get the best chance.

WAR would disagreee
In their lone full seasons at 2B, Iwamura (2008) put up 2.6 WAR to Barmes’ (2009) 1.6. But, yeah, it’s not an upgrade that jumps out. It would be nice to have another guy get on base regularly at the top of the lineup in front. Imagine Gonzo/Dexter, (mystery 2nd Base), and Helton with OBPs of .350 to .400 in front of Tulo, Hawpe, Ianetta. It’d be nice.
What’s the gusto for the second base market this off-season?
there really isn't one, unless we make a play like Brian Roberts or Aaron Hill
Aki’s OBP isn’t terrible, I’m not denying that, but the rest of his game is pretty meh. We already have a .350+ OBP guy to dump in the 2 hole, actually 2 of them, one a LHB and the other a switch

Hopefully the new management in Toronto wouldn’t be any better at getting prospects back for solid players than the last.
at one point I suggested looking at Felipe Lopez

That's not bad...
Probably the same price as Iwamura, and not much more than Barmes would get in arb. But there’d prob have to be a 2-3 year commitment. Another switch hit would give a ton of flex in the lineup.
Plus he always ends up on my fantasy team.
What happens to Barmes if another 2B is acquired? Seems like the Twins love his type, and Barmes does like deer meat.
do you not suggest that anymore?
lopez has been someone who i have wanted them to go after. i just dont know what the price will be

I've rethought Brian Roberts and am against it, here's why...
…in a nutshell, he’s signed through his age 37 year. He’s 32 now. In the post-steroids era, to expect he’s not going to regress fairly significantly over the life of that contract is highly unrealistic. Sure, he’s give us a boost in ‘10 and ’11, but he’ll be untradeable after that, with $30m remaining on his deal, just as we should be clear of the relative albatross that is Helton’s contract.

which Felipe Lopez we’d be getting. He’s definitely a big sell-high guy right now…

I'm not sure it's worth trying to get someone else to play second
To me there are really only five guys who I would consider elite second basemen (Chase Utley, Ben Zobrist, Dustin Pedroia, Ian Kinsler, and Robinson Cano) and none of them are going anywhere. While there are about a dozen more guys you could probably say are better than Barmes, I don’t see anyone else as a HUGE improvement over him. Instead of giving up prospects or adding to the payroll we should probably keep what we have for now.
I'm still hoping to wake up from that nightmare I had about the 9th inning of Game 4.

I think you are being too generous
Brian Roberts has only hit .300 once, has career OPS of .776, and is mediocre defensivly. I think he’s really good but he is not on the Utley, Zobrist, Pedroia, Kinsler, and Cano level.

I wouldn't lump Zobrist in there based on one excellent season
and Utley is in his own level above Pedroia, Kinsler, and Robbie.
But I more or less agree with this. Roberts would be a good fit for our club IMO, which is why I’m always pushing for him. But he’s not a top flight guy, he has toolsets our organization values.

but until Nelson or Gomez is ready to really take the reins, we can squeeze the rest of his skillset out

by Andrew Martin on Oct 26, 2009 1:09 PM MDT up reply actions
No choice, he's already signed for the next 4 years
- 4 years/$40M (2010-13)
* signed extension with Baltimore 2/20/09
* 10:$10M, 11:$10M, 12:$10M, 13:$10M
* limited no-trade protection: Roberts may block deals to 8 clubs in 2010, 12 clubs in 2011
* full no-trade protection in 2012
* award bonuses
So I amend my previous comment above, but he’s signed through his age 36 season. That’s a lot of money for a less than absolutely elite 2B who should regress significantly over the life of the deal.

Not that it’s relevant, but you’re making me go here…
Postseason trips:
Brian Roberts 0
Clint Barmes 2
Jason Marquis 54
Barmes 1
he wasn’t on the 2007 roster.
Hope got in my eyes
by Andrew Martin on Oct 26, 2009 7:28 PM MDT up reply actions
Right you are
I could swear he was the the 2007 version of Q, but I guess that would have been Jamey Carrol.
Really though.
My argument against Roberts is that he is not worth what it will cost in talent to pry him loose from Baltimore, who values him very highly. Especially for a guy who is going to cost as much as he will at his age. His best days are likely behind him. I think he’s still got some good days in him. But the upgrade over Barmes is not worth the price in talent, dollars, and long term commitment.
Look at me defending Clint Barmes.
As you said yourself the other day, in the Barmes vs. EY2 discussion, this franchise values the defense up the middle pretty highly, especially with the ground ballers on the starting staff. Barmes D was worth nearly 16 runs more than Roberts this year, and to be honest Roberts range has not been improving the last few years.
no, these are all good points.
It’s just kind of a pipe dream from 2-3 years ago that I won’t let go of.
In his defense, he did just hit 56 doubles. Can you imagine that kind of SLG, plus a decent OBP?
stupid not being able to acquire brian roberts…

It's not that
I don’t like Brian Roberts, I do. Those doubles are great. He is great at the plate. He is just not a Colorado style 2B, especially with is rising costs and declining D.
I don’t see them going after Felipe Lopez either. Not with Barmes and EY2 on the roster anyway. The team seems pretty committed to Barmes, at least that’s the impression I’ve been getting from Renck and Ringolsby. Hoping for the team to go after a new 2B seems like kind of a pipe dream as well. I think we need to all accept that Barmes will be the man going into spring training and move on. But that’s just me.

by Andrew Martin on Oct 26, 2009 7:43 PM MDT up reply actions
If you want a realistic possibility think Kelly Johnson. Looking like ATL will likely non-tender him and go with Prado. I like him as a buy low. Could create a real competition.
whose roster spot would you give him?
He’d be our new Jeff Baker, minus the gargantuan power potential.
I had an OOTP sim where Jeff Baker hit 80 dingers in AAA.
Hope got in my eyes
by Andrew Martin on Oct 26, 2009 7:49 PM MDT up reply actions
I wouldn’t give him a spot over EY, unless EY went back to AAA to work on his D. I was just trying to throw a realistic option for another 2B out there for you.
I’m actually genuinely curious to see who/what DOD has in mind this offseason. I don’t see him standing pat.
Apparently we're looking for
Starting Pitching and a RHB.
After Johnson’s big ‘07 and ’08, I’d be surprised if we could just swoop in and sign him without fighting for him, you know?
Hope got in my eyes
by Andrew Martin on Oct 26, 2009 7:58 PM MDT up reply actions
RHB off the bench I think was the quote. Matt Murton?
Starting Pitching. Jeff Francis? Esmil Rogers? Samuel Deduno? Greg Smith? Greg Reynolds?
I think Johnson will have some competition out there – ODog, Lopez etc…I would bet he goes to the place he has the best shot at starting. St. Louis maybe? They wanted him last year. If he gets released.
St. Louis already had Mark DeRosa, they don't need another one
ODawg had such a cold finish, I don’t think I’d want to give him another look.

by Andrew Martin on Oct 26, 2009 8:04 PM MDT up reply actions
I’m just saying there’s going to be competition in the 2B market this winter for a guy like him. Other guys that’ll probably be looking at 1 year deals.
Also, DeRosa played primarily 3B for STL, and is also a free agent.
I’m not sure what we are arguing about?
Here's another guy to look at: Placido Polanco
His defense, batting average and WAR are all pretty good and he’s a free agent that might not be too expensive. I don’t think he’s the answer but I’m just throwing him out there.
Here’s his stats.

Of course, Roberts in 2006 would have cost us something like Tulo + U-Ball in talent.
Lopez may be worth a looksee.
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
I completely agree on Utley. He is the best second baseman in the game by a lot.
As far as Zobrist goes, I think it’s fair to question what he will do in the future since he never did anything before this season; but those numers he put up this year are so insane that even a big dropoff next year would leave him in good company. (Even if his OPS drops .125 points next year he will still be at .823 which would have been good for third best among all second basemen this year.)
He may have only done it one year but let me ask you this, all contracts being equal is there any other second baseman you would rather have for the next three or four years. (Other than the other four listed above)

I want to discuss how the two star pitchers that organization found are now starting against each other in the World Series. I would be furious if I were an Indians fan and had to watch not one, but two pitchers that came up through my organiztion pitch in Game 1 of the World Series for another team. Especially since one of those teams is the Yankees.
I wonder what Indian fans did to deserve this?

Troy Tulowitzki - THE best SS in the game..nuff said
Yorvit Torrealba - En Fuego!! (when hitting 6th or 7th)
Brad Hawpe- Big Bad Brad, I hope I get to see you in a Rockies uniform again!
Dexter Fowler - prowling CF, WC in his talons, leaping Utley's in a single bound!
