After fighting tooth and nail for 161 games for a playoff berth and then for playoff eligibility, the Rockies will play their first and only meaningless game of the 2009 regular season today against the Dodgers. Both teams are locked into their seeds and playoff opponents, meaning that we are likely to see two get-away day line-ups as both teams just look to avoid injuries going into the playoffs.
To use a football analogy, it's like the Colts resting Peyton Manning and many of their starters in the last week of the season pretty much every year because they have nothing to play for. It's nice for both teams to have the luxury of this kind of game, but there's no denying that this game would have been chock full of drama had Colorado found a way to win last night.
Nonetheless, it's Rockies baseball and it's game 162, with the chance to avoid 70 losses for the first time ever, improving on what has already been the best regular season in franchise history.
Jason Marquis could be pitching for his spot in the playoff roster, while the Dodgers will throw out Vicente Padilla, acquired off of waivers in August from the Rangers.

I admit fully that with very little on the line for this game, it will serve as a sideshow for the Broncos game.

Man, I wish I could watch the Broncos on tv.
I know I’ve said this before, but being in a 2-NFL team town where I don’t care about either team really sucks.
That said, I’ll be following the Broncos online and watching the Rockies on mute for the first 2 hours while I listen to a church broadcast.

What stinks even more about the NFL situation here is that when the Broncos actually did play one the local teams (in Oakland), the game was blacked out so I still didn’t get to watch them.

Not clear what his role will be. If Jorge isn’t able to pitch in the NLDS, he’ll obviously be a starter, but he or Hammel will be moved to long relief otherwise.

but you covered mostly everything I was getting at anyway. As another note, do you think this could be a blessing in disguise as JDLR doesn’t exactly match up well against the Phillies?

I've been watching some of his archived games..
and the difference between the good ones and bad ones was his breaking pitches and the umpires squeezing the strike zone. His FB has remained consistent at 91 with good downward movement.

if Tulo was in there instead of Q, this is a better line-up than what we had last night. By a long shot.

Marquis’s streak of ten straight playoff appearances (okay, so he’s only actually pitched in the playoffs in four of those years), has not been broken.

not in the first round at least. If they keep him as the 4th starter he won’t be scheduled to pitch until Sunday. At which point he could be healthy. Or Ubaldo could pitch on 3 days rest.

Any thought that maybe this start isn't necessarily the
start Tracy used for evaluating Marquis for the rotation in the postseason? Perhaps his last start was a better indicator? He doesn’t have the same defense behind him that he normally would. I realize that the pitches have been up. Marquis had the same problem last outing, but turned it around and had an effective outing afterword.

since there are only two games that day, probably close to 7pm MT, with LAD @ STL first. As for Game 4 Sunday, with games that day at MIN/DET, BOS and STL, don’t be surprised if it’s a late night game, close to 10pm ET/8pm MT. An earlier start could happen if the LAD/STL series ends on Saturday.
The Coors field light went out in 07 because..
they were set to shutoff when the season ended and no one had ever updated the timer.

If the start times are similar to what TBS did in 2007...
I’m leaning toward 3:00pm ET/1:00pm MT for both Wednesday and Thursday. With NYY, LAD, and LAA hosting games on Wednesday and Thursday, the Yankees game 1 will be in primetime around 6:30pm ET/4:30pm MT, and then the LAD game probably around 10pm ET/8pm MT. On the day where both LAA and LAD host, they can coin flip which one would be in the primetime slot and which one would follow.
