Yorvit Torrealba blasts Rockies into NLDS tie, Rockies beat Phillies 5-4
Colorado scored a first inning run from Carlos Gonzalez, later got a two run home run from Yorvit Torrealba and an effective pitching performance from Aaron Cook and several relievers to defeat the Phillies 5-4 on Thursday and even their NLDS series at one game apiece as the teams now head to Denver and Coors Field for games three and four.
Cook pitched brilliantly before running into trouble in the sixth inning, when the Phillies wound up scoring three of their four runs. Jose Contreras was called on to get out of the inning, eventually inducing an inning double play from Carlos Ruiz to put a stop to the rally. Matt Belisle pitched a scoreless seventh, but Rockies killer Jayson Werth hit a solo home run off of Rafael Betancourt with two outs in the eighth to pull the Phillies back within one run. Franklin Morales finished the inning before giving way to Huston Street who required a little drama, walking Matt Stairs and allowing a two out single to Jimmy Rollins before recording the save.
Dexter Fowler drove in two runs, both with sacrifice flies including the eventual game winner in the top of the seventh inning after the Rockies loaded the bases with none out.
WOOT!!! HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE NOW, MONKEYS!!!

Clearly, Manual made the choice to use Pedro before today, and that’s why he used happ. My point: he shouldn’t have used Happ today at all. That he got injured just makes it worse.

It might sound crazy but I agree with the decision to play happ today. This really was a must win for philly and they had to do everything to get the win. Not to say the Rockies have it in the bag or even close, but things are difficult for philly now

Don't be surprised if the Rockies are in the late time slot again on Sunday.
With games in Boston, Minneapolis, possibly St. Louis, and Denver on Sunday, I wouldn’t be surprised if it is a 7:37pm or 8:07pm start. It’s almost a certainty that the ALDS games would get the better time slots, that would leave 11am or 8pm. And since the Rockies are already at 7:37pm Saturday, I would not expect MLB and TBS to force the Rockies and Phillies make a quick turnaround to 11am the next morning. My best bet is likely 7:37pm or 8:07pm. They’ll probably announce it if STL wins game 2 today.

In years past, they would stack the 4-game order at 11am, 2pm, 5pm, and 8pm, especially when ESPN TV did the postseason.
But since TBS took over, they were trying to stick closer to the 3 1/2 hour grid. If I remember the last couple of years, they stuck a 11am MT game on TNT, then three TBS games at 1pm, 4:30pm, and 8pm MT. The Yankees will be in the 4:30pm game, then they will likely split up LAA/BOS and LAD/STL into the early time slots, with the “late game” in Denver. Let’s see what happens.

National TV audience pecking order, from what I've noticed
1) NYY
2) LAD
3) BOS
4) LAA
That’s probably why STL/LAD is on now in primetime, followed by BOS/LAA Game 1 at 7:37pm MT.

Then again, the Red Sox/Angels game are in the 7:37pm time slot in Anaheim Friday night, but could be in the 11am (or 1pm) time slot in Boston.

I'm sure this was mentioned in the game thread, but my TV and computer are on different floors.
My gems from the announcers:
Surprise that Barmes swung at two bad pitches. (We keep him for the 27th out.)
Belisle- part of the revamped bullpen under Tracy. (At the end maybe, but originally he was part of the problem.)
And I think I strained my calf muscle jumping for joy on the final out.

I think the problem kind of starts with....
TV broadcasting is modeled on radio broadcasting, so they have to talk all the time. It has never dawned on them that with the picture, they don’t have to talk constantly. Go to a game with your friend, and describe the action at all times. See how long before he pops you in the mouth.
With the constant talk, you up your chances of saying something dumb. Everyone here would do it. So it’s a difficult job made more difficult by the fact that no one has ever said “eh, they can see what’s going on.”

This year, Bon Jovi is the official band of playoff baseball. who the hell is in charge of this crap? They need to be fired.
The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.

A representative can shamelessly pursue client's self-interest
In a way that the person themselves would never do. The agent justifies the ethics by saying they are just doing their job. But a person would behave differently if they were acting on their own behalf. It is a social construction that enables selfishness to be ethically justified. It is outrageous and an insult to civil society.

Scott Boras attempts to get his players the maximum of their value
Just because his clients don’t need the extra money doesn’t mean they should be vilified for seeking it. He also represents amateurs getting ready for the draft, who take a huge risk by agreeing to drop everything (college, other job prospects) to play a sport where the chances of injury are high and the chances of not making the majors are higher. Even a signing bonus of 6 figures isn’t a whole lot if the career goes nowhere and you have to work a cash register for the rest of your life. I guess what I’m trying to say is, while Boras might lack decorum, it is good that he has brought more leverage to the players than to the owners, who historically have made out far better than the people who actually play the game

It is not even him that I am against
It is the concept of removing oneself from the social interactions to which one is a party. It completely removes ethics as a matter of course. Boras just takes it to the logical extreme.

I'm not sure what that means
Are you referring to the A-rod thing, or how he generally does business? If you’re talking about Holliday, I think the fact he was represented by Boras is way overhyped. He wanted market value in free agency, which will net him 5+ years and 8 figures per year. Boras didn’t set his value, his play did. Either the Rox could pony up the dough or trade him. When you think about it, everyone ended up better off; we got Cargo, Street, A’s got Brett Wallace, and the Cards got the big bat they needed in the stretch run. I just find it hard to accept that an agent attracts so much hatred for doing a necessary job

I am talking about agents
I think people should represent themselves (with aid if needed). At least be present and involved in the negotiations.
Boras as deal maker is different than Boras as agent. My wish is a bit fantastical in this climate, but ethics disappear from social relationships when the principals are not involved.

This seems rather silly.
Baseball player’s jobs are to play baseball. They don’t have any idea how to negotiate deals to full value. That is why they hire agents; to do the legwork, find precedents, and come to mutual agreements with clubs about the player’s value. Players still okay their deals; it isn’t like they are puppets in Boras’s agenda. Should baseball players really be concerned about “social relationships” anyway?

I know, it is silly
I don’t like corporations for the same reason. Ethics disappear as they are couched in other sets of ethics. Being a good citizen becomes less important than maximizing value for your firm, or client.

I think you look at these things the wrong way
Corporations aren’t in the business of being good citizens, they are in the business of making money. And lest we forget, they do this by providing a service that is in demand by consumers. They should not be reviled for trying to squeeze the last penny out of their dealings; they should be admired for contributing to the economy, which provides jobs, produces wealth, and leads to greater tax revenue, all while offering their particular service. Anyway…
GO ROCKIES!!!

by Rock Oax on Oct 8, 2009 8:59 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
What on earth are you talking about ethics for?
What are ethics, anyway? The negotiation process is absolutely a two-way process, and the clubs are using every tactic THEY can to get the best deal for them. Just as in baseball a player may pretend to have made a catch that hit the ground, or may steal signs, or a purpler dinosaur may dance in front of the opposing closer, there are marginal methods used by both sides to gain a preferential result. But ethics don’t come into it.
I am an agent. My job is to use my experience, relationships and negotiating skills – none of which my clients would be expected to have – to get the best deal available for them. The fact that the client doesn’t have to interact directly with the potential employer is a huge plus for both parties, as it means their relationship can remain open, honest and free of all the niggly battles that us agents undertake on their behalves.
It’s pretty much impossible to come up with a good argument why a baseball player should compromise himself when it comes to negotiating his terms of employment. He will, invariably, have thoughts on where he’d like to play, who he’d like to play for, and any loyalty he may feel towards a club or its fans. But we can’t expect the latter to be a primary driving force, just as Joe Roxfan shouldn’t be expected to show loyalty to ColMeatCo when Greeley Cow Inc. makes him a better offer.
The success of agents is purely and simply a function of the supply and demand of baseball players. Unless a salary cap, or similarly restrictive device, were imposed on baseball wages, agents will continue to DO THEIR JOB and get their clients the best deals possible.
I charge my clients 10% of their earnings, and my clients obviously agree that I deliver more than 10% value in terms of the deals I make for them. There is no “loser” – the employer chooses to make the deal if it’s satisfactory to them. If it’s not, they walk away.
If a small club like the Rockies loses its best players because they can’t afford to keep them, that’s not the agent’s fault. That’s the fault of unfettered, capitalist markets. That’s the fault of the United States of America.

Jabs, RMN and the playoff crapshoot crowd have a friend in Theo Epstein
"If you played the postseason 100 times, 50 times you might get bounced in the first round, and 25 times you get bounced in the next round, 12 times you might lose in the World Series, 13 times you might win the World Series.* You’re not sure what you’re going to get. You root your players on, hoping that they show their best at the most important time, believing that they will, because we believe in their character."
May the Rockies bring me to paydirt!

more from Epstein
"In our mission statement, part of it is we want to operate with a long-term view to put ourselves in a position to win 95 games and get in the playoffs as often as we possibly. Now we’ve done it six out of seven years. Part of the thinking is that if you make the postseason multiple times, you improve your chances of making the World Series. Theoretically, if you’re in eight times, you’ll win one World Series. Well, we’ve been in five times. This is our sixth time in. The first five times in, we won two World Series. I’m not going to [complain] about that.

Epstein on the infamous Beane comment
"I think there’s a lot of truth to it," Epstein said. "I know Billy took a lot of [grief] for that comment. But the reality is, the smaller the sample, the more randomness there is. That said, it’s not a complete crapshoot. There are certain types of teams that tend to do a little bit better. There are certain elements of the game that are emphasized. It’s not determined by luck. It’s determined by how you play. So we try to do everything we can to put ourselves in a position to play well. You try to get every edge you can, including advanced scouting, which I feel for the postseason we’ve done as well or better than anyone else in the game – that’s something that we really emphasize and take pride in. Our players, time after time, have come up big in the postseason. They deserve a lot of credit for it. I feel like if you call it all luck, you take away from how hard it is for them to perform under those circumstances. I’m not saying Billy is wrong, because he’s not. But there is a performance element, too."
May the Rockies bring me to paydirt!

Why are you defending him so much cat?
He just dropped a fly ball, perhaps costing his team the game. Deal with it, that’s the truth.

I'm saying that
they still had chances to get 1 more out after that and the pitcher walks 2 batters…that’s not the only reason the Cards lost that game…

but the worst thing you can do for a struggling pitcher
