As excited I am to see how we do this postseason, and I think we are very much in contention for another World Series appearance, I have been wondering recently, how Rockies roster is going to look next year. I think we will be in an even better position to succeed...who will stay...who will go. Here are a few of my thoughts...what do you think?
Jorge De La Rosa
Todd Helton 1B
Ian Stewart 3B
Seth Smith RF
Clint Barmes 2B
I have 2 spots open...do Hawpe and Atkins stay? Keep one of them and add another reliver? I think one of them goes via trade...I think we get more for Atkins right now. Does Giambi stay? I think the Rox buy out Torrealba's contract. I think Marquis is gone...he wants to go to NY anyway and Francis is a better pitcher anyway.
Overall, I really like our probable starting rotation and think we will be tough to beat consistently with those guys. I would like to see us go after a big bat...I think not having Holliday in our lineup has hurt us somewhat. We don't really have anyone that is feared. Tulo is great, but I don't think he strikes fear in the hearts of opposing pitchers...same with Helton (now a doubles and singles hitter). Stewart and Iannetta are promising but not consistent (low batting avg). Cargo and Fowler are great to set the table. Barmes is good and bad but provides HR power while maintaining a pedestrian BA. So, I can only see a big bat going to 2nd base (which is rare unless you are Chase Utley) or RF. That means that Seth and Hawpe would be out of luck for a starting nod or good trade bait.
I also don't think Giambi will be on our roster...we just need more out of that roster spot than just pinch hitting every now and then and spelling Helton every 7 or 8 games.
