2009 SBN Baseball Awards: Rookies of the Year

I won SBN's AL Rookie of the Year. Who am I and what do I receive along with the title? (Sadly, the answer is that SBN awards don't come with anything.)

I won SBN's AL Rookie of the Year. Who am I and what do I receive along with the title? (Sadly, the answer is that SBN awards don't come with anything.)

In the next installment for SBN Baseball's end of the year awards, I present to you the AL and NL ballots. First, let me recap who Purple Row chose for its award winners. In the AL, our voting gave first place to two Oakland A's pitchers, Brett Anderson and Andrew Bailey. Gordon Beckham finished third. In the NL, Marlins OF Chris Coghlan took first place in a close competition with Andrew McCutchen. Tommy Hanson finished third.

SBN Baseball voting did not follow suit. The AL winner appeared on only one ballot, and the NL appeared above but was not PR's winner. Join me after the jump.

Star-divide

The AL results:

RkPlayerTeam1st2nd3rdPts
1 Elvis Andrus Texas Rangers 6 9 6 63
2 Andrew Bailey Oakland Athletics 11 1 3 61
3 Jeff Niemann Tampa Bay Rays 3 5 3 33
4 Rick Porcello Detroit Tigers 2 7 2 33
5 Brett Anderson Oakland Athletics 5 1 3 31
6 Gordon Beckham Chicago White Sox 1 2 8 19
7 Nolan Reimold Baltimore Orioles 1 - 1 6
8 Matt Wieters Baltimore Orioles - 1 3 6
9 Brad Bergesen Baltimore Orioles - 1 - 3
10 Ricky Romero Toronto Blue Jays - 1 - 3
11 Travis Snider Toronto Blue Jays - 1 - 3

Elvis Andrus appeared on Jabberwocky's ballot, and 21 SBN AL bloggers put him on their ballots. It was a close vote, as Andrew Bailey received as many first place votes as the first-, third-, and fourth-place finishers did combined. Brett Anderson had one less first-place vote than Andrus did, and he finished in fifth place!

Here are the NL results:

RkPlayerTeam1st2nd3rdPts
1 Tommy Hanson Atlanta Braves 9 9 6 78
2 J.A. Happ Philadelphia Phillies 6 9 7 64
3 Andrew McCutchen Pittsburgh Pirates 8 3 5 54
4 Chris Coghlan Florida Marlins 7 5 4 54
5 Dexter Fowler Colorado Rockies - 3 1 10
6 Randy Wells Chicago Cubs - - 6 6
7 Garrett Jones Pittsburgh Pirates 1 - - 5
8 Casey McGehee Milwaukee Brewers - 1 2 5
9 Seth Smith Colorado Rockies - 1 - 3

Purple Row's NL Rookie of the Year tied for third with Purple Row's second-place rookie in the SBN NL voting. Yet it was Purple Row's third-place winner who took home the SBN NL Rookie of the Year hardware (we don't actually have hardware to give away--yet).

I account for that Fowler third-place vote as I submitted the same ballot during SBN voting. Did one of the Pirates' bloggers give his first-place vote to Garrett Jones? I'm still trying to find out what a Casey McGehee is, and who gave that vote to Mr. Late Night?

I'm pretty sure I account for one of Dex's second place votes,

I think I gave first place to Hanson, and I can’t remember if I gave McCutchen or Coghlan third.

How the hell does Andrew Bailey get 11 first place votes and not finish first?

Points and whaddamadunk, but seriously.

only 15 votes as compared to Andrus' 21

Andrus is the wrong answer.

Yep.

Those who didn’t vote for Bailey should be fired.

So it's just gonna be you and Silver then?

Heh.

Bailey might have been seventh on my ballot. Maybe.

It seems like those who voted Bailey first voted Andrus second

while most of the people who voted Andrus first didn’t even have Bailey in the top three.

It amazes me that 21 out of 30 sites voted Bailey in the top three and only one out of the six writers here did.

(Even that was a third place vote so I don’t have much of a problem with it)

Really though, how does a guy with .702 OPS win this award. Nobody’s glove is that good.

Andrus' glove is pretty darn good. Like Vizquel good.

Which is why I voted him third.

I don't have a problem ranking him third

I wouldn’t have voted that way but I think you can make a case for him. It’s him winning the whole thing that boggles my mind. I mean lets face it, if defense mattered that much Tulo would have been ROTY in 2007.

Did he win the SBN award 2007?

Not quite.

NL voted for the NL awards, AL voted for the AL awards. The four non-team-specific blogs received four ballots, two for each league, while each blog received two ballots. So as long as everyone voted, the maximum number of ballots a player could appear in is 36.
