Rockies decline option on Betancourt
According to Ed Price of AOL FanHouse (thru Twitter/MLB Trade Rumors), the Rox have declined Rafael Betancourt's $5.4 million option.
The club is apparently still trying to work out a deal. We'll be keeping an eye on this up until December, when the Rockies will decide whether or not to offer arbitration.

They have a decent shot at it.
But I think it would be a mistake to decline and offer arbitration. I bet he accepts and hopes the economy improves.
I see this move as a lateral move
in terms of retaining him. For all we know, they’ve been working on a deal with him for two weeks

I think that makes sense
and I hope you’re right. What would his arb figure be if he just decides to take that?
My guess would be about an 80% raise...
coming out to about $6 million. Salary arbitrators are stupid.

We have a better chance
We have a distinct advantage in negotiating with him, since another team would have to pay a competitive salary PLUS draft pick(s).
Of course that is assuming we offer arbitration.
Good going Rockies Organization...
he is now free to sigh with the god dam Yankees. Why can’t the ownership, for once just open you dam wallet! This guy is the deal and its not like its a 10 year deal its just 1 stinking year for 5 Million.
Let him do that, then...
That’s just another first round draft pick for the Rockies.
I see this as a win-win situation, especially considering how well the Rox have drafted as of late.
Just an average guy with exceptional hair. Nothing more, nothing less.

Yeah! That dusty old thing never gets opened!
In fact, last time it was opened, I think we traded for Jose Contreras and Joe Beimel and Rafael Betan…oh
Hope got in my eyes
