Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

From Renck at the Denver Post...

I don't know, but this just seems a little ridiculous to me. Is there anyone who will really give up a player for Atkins given that he will cost at minimum $5.6 million next year should he be traded for.

I can understand interest in Atkins from other teams, but not at that price. For that reason Atkins is a waste of a 40 man roster spot that could be used to protect another prospect from the Rule 5 draft.

More on this decision when I post my free agency preview sometime soon.

What are we going to trade him for?

His value is so low, it’s ludicrous to expect much.

i said we have a few more wks to trade him

i highly doubt we would get him traded because they will be waiting for him to be non tendered i was just saying we still have a 1% hope of trading him lol

Yea I'm not totally against this move either.

Depends on how the Rule V protection goes. Still no way they offer him a contract

Where there's smoke, there's usually fire

At least that’s what I’m hoping. I can’t imagine anyone being that stupid though

I wonder if Bud Selig will give the Yankees a receipt with their World Series purchase

Also
Barmes enjoyed a career season last year.

I demand to know what he means. He had some career highs and some career lows…

I concur

2008 was more of a “career year”

Hope got in my eyes

yea

if that was a career season, i’m not looking forward to the next couple years when he starts to regress even more at the plate (if that is even possible) and lose his range

I hope this is because there's a potential trade in the works.

I agree that this is lame

because no one will ever trade for Atkins, but what does it really hurt?

If the 3B FAs get snatched up right away, maybe someone will think that Outkins at 6M is worth it… doubtful…

The only downfall I see would be if we had to DFA someone to keep Atkins on the 40-man, but that’s not the case, right?

At this point

it will only affect who is protected from the Rule V draft. WolfMarauder had a list of guys he expected to be protected a few days back but I can’t find it. I expect we’ll know tomorrow when they set 40 man rosters who was protected and who wasn’t.

by Hizilla on Nov 19, 2009 5:17 PM MST up reply actions

Exactly. We have seven spots, more than enough.

Atkins will be non-tendered in December as expected.

by Greg Stanwood on Nov 19, 2009 5:36 PM MST up reply actions

I don't understand why this is a surprise.

The plan all along was to simply non-tender him at the tender deadline. Same thing we did with Taveras before.

Re: Jabberwock post on the DP article

I think a $5.6 million contract is the ceiling for the most Atkins could get assuming a ‘bidding war’ happened somehow. For that amount, Atkin is an over glorified PH-1b-3b. Dan O’Dowd is making Atkins suitors think hard about doing a trade with the Rockies before he is released. It’s a smart hardball move, assuming we don’t lose any really worthwhile prospects through the Rule V draft. I wonder if I should be surprise if O’Dowd somehow gets a very very very very very very very low low low low low level rookie prospect without ever offering arbitration to Atkins and just trading him to the Rangers.

My initial reaction was

“goddamn small market teams, sentimentality just gets in the way…”

but then I read the rest of the commentary and realized we had 40-man room, and decided to post something else.

….
