Monday Rockpile: Season-ticket prices hold steady

Rockies tell season-ticket holders that price will remain the same | All Things Rockies
But will we see an uptick in the number of season ticket plans sold?

Health key to Gomez's development | ColoradoRockies.com: News
We'll have another Fall League Pebble Report soon, but for now here's a piece on Hector Gomez.

Looking over the 2010 Bill James Handbook, here are some results to ponder:

  • According to the votes for the Fielding Bible Awards, no Rockie player won. Troy Tulowitzki came in a point behind Jack Wilson, the winner. Seth Smith came in tied for seventh with our ol' buddy Juan Pierre. Peter Gammons gave his first-place vote at second base to Clint Barmes.
  • The Rockies are good at manufacturing runs . . . and bad at allowing manufactured runs. In the National League, the Rockies tied for third in manufacturing runs with the Dodgers at 173. The Rockies tied for fourth in allowing manufactured runs with the Pirates at 168.
  • Dexter Fowler and Troy Tulowitzki made the top 10 for Manufactured Runs Contribution with 29 and 27, respectively. Tulo tied with Matt Kemp and Hanley Ramirez. On the Rockies, Seth Smith and Ian Stewart tied for third with 15 manufactured runs contributed.

So, my noobishness is shining through again.

Can a shortstop not be easily and adequately converted to a second baseman, which seems to be a similar role but requiring slightly less skill? If in 2011 we had Tulo at short and Gomez at second (or even vice versa if that made sense), would that not sort our 2B problem?

I am guessing not because otherwise it’d be too easy :)

Anyone

remember a line of discussion on this in a Rockpile some time over the last two weeks? I believe the general conclusion was that it can be done, but being a shortstop doesn’t necessarily translate to being good at second.

this is a good way to look at it

The general middle-infield defensive skills translate, but the shortstop does so much more than the 2B does in terms of fielding – the SS is active on nearly every possible play, cutting off OF throws, backing up throws, covering bases, everything. Not that the 2B is just chilling, but the infield really revolves around the SS.

by Andrew Martin on Nov 2, 2009 9:05 AM MST up reply actions

I like these points

For me if an infielder is going to switch positions the one that could probably do it the best would be the short stop for the reasons listed above. There’s less to do at second and you don’t need as strong of an arm. I guess it’s better to have a hole a second than at short because a short stop can be turned into a second baseman (usually) while you really can’t go the other way

I'm still hoping to wake up from that nightmare I had about the 9th inning of Game 4.

by RhodeIslandRoxfan on Nov 2, 2009 9:55 AM MST up reply actions

The skills are very similar which is why many SS can play 2nd.

The biggest difference is the 2ndbasman, has far shorter throws he has to make. the other big difference it the double play turn at 2nd. The SS is always going forward, and his throw to 1st is in front of him. The play is always in front of him. The 2nd baseman, has to turn to throw to 1st, with the baserunner coming into him at his side a lot. The 2ndbaseman, should be agile, and have good feet and hands because of the “turn”.

Season Ticket holders..

I am looking into possibly buying a ticket pkg., but have absolutely no idea what are the best (economical) pkgs etc. Could you all give me some guidance into this scarey area..thanks

by butterfly on Nov 2, 2009 7:59 AM MST reply actions

It depends on lots of factors

mostly on your end. Money, where you like to seat.

The two best bang for your buck is “the Guys Night Out Package” and the “Ladies Night Out”. (and you don’t have to be either to buy the tickets. They are for every Tuesday night game (guys) or Wednesday (Ladies). They come with free beer coupons. If you are a lady at a Wednesday night game, you get a voucher for a ticket to use at future Rockies games, so it becomes a two-fer special if you are female. The downside to both of these packages, is they have no post-season priorities, and no opening day tickets.

The next cheapest was the “Silver Slugger package”, which has one game per month, different days. Also no post-season Priorities nor opening day tickets.

The next step up are Mini plans. You can get 16 or 20 game packages, most anywhere in the stadium. Last year there was 4 different packages of different games. All have opening day, and all have post season priorities.

Next level is a full 81 game season ticket. These can be split, and if you go online, you can see people posting to share. Some of these will have parking (extra fee of course). The good part is a season ticket group gets a few more post season tickets then their seats (though I’m not sure how many). The key to sharing is the person who’s name is on the tickets, has to be organized, and responsive, and active.

by Redhawk on Nov 2, 2009 10:15 AM MST up reply actions

Other advantages to full season tickets

1) The ability to exchange and sell them. You can do past exchanges, where you swap unused tickets to past games for selected future games (e.g., I want to swap 4 tickets from game 20 that I missed for 4 additional tickets to game 75). You can do future exchanges were you swap unwanted future games for other future games (e.g., I want to swap 4 tickets for game 50 and 4 tickets for game 51 for 8 tickets together at game 51). And you can sell any unwanted ticket via StubHub, which is a Rockies partner now, without having to mail tickets, etc.
2) Cheapest price per seat
3) If sharing with someone else, the ability to basically create your own custom MiniPlan

I’ve done both MiniPlans and full season tickets in the past. I probably prefer the full tickets because of the ability to exchange tickets.

You can also vote for other Rockies

Tulo for his defense.
Tulo again for his cycle to be performance of the year.
DOD for exec
Ubaldo for unsung star

I honestly believe that everything except for Tulo’s cycle being performance of the year is a fair vote.

I love Tulo for those things

but I picked Zimmerman and Kinsler over him in those cases. I didn’t see the fire that Tulo had in 2007 earlier this season. Was it injury, or just despair (or Hurdle or whatever)? I don’t know, but Zimmerman plays for a bottom-3 franchise in the majors, and IS their franchise player, and challenges Beltre and Feliz for “Best 3B glove”

And I love, love, love, love Ubaldo, and I’m going to write an article about him soon here, but Ben Zobrist is the winner of that one.

Hope got in my eyes

by Andrew Martin on Nov 2, 2009 9:34 AM MST up reply actions

see here's the dilemma

define “unsung hero”. Is this the MVP of people who weren’t in the MVP discussion? What qualifies “unsung hero”? Zobrist was just disgustingly valuable this season, as a near elite bat somehow playing as a full time uber utility guy. Mark Reynolds belted 44 dingers and stole 24 bags. Ubaldo Jimenez pitched 2 million innings, threw 100mph, got no love in the run support dept, and even drove the team bus sometimes, all the way to the postseason.

I don’t know what to do. I feel dirty right now.

Reynolds was a TSN All-Star. Is that unsung?

Ubaldo will get some Cy Young votes. Is that unsung?

I don't think this has ever happened before. The Redskins suck, yet the (Arizona) Cardinals and (University of Arizona) Wildcats don't.

So the Yankees are gonna use Burnett on short rest tonight

This is stupid if you ask me. Burnett’s ERA on the road this year is 4.59 and you’re gonna start him on short rest? Plus now if there is a game 6 you have to use 37 year old Andy Pettite who threw over 100 pitches in game 3 on short rest as well. Can you say Yankees middle relief? Oh and if there is a game 7 and CC isn’t his best on double short rest you now can’t use of your other starters. (Remember how much Mike Mussina helped the Yankees win game 7 of the 03 ALCS after Clemens was not good.)

The Yankees are playing with house money tonight. If they lose it’s really not a huge deal for them because they are facing Lee and they still have two chances to win it at home. Wouldn’t they be better off with Burnett on an extra day’s rest in game 6 and with Pettite on full rest in reserve if CC runs into trouble in game 7?

As a Yankee hater I love this. I’m upping Philly’s chances of coming back in this series from the 10% last night to 25% now.

I'm still hoping to wake up from that nightmare I had about the 9th inning of Game 4.

They have a radio station here for the students though and I do a sports talk show with another student every Monday from 2-4 in the afternoon (Eastern time). I'm still hoping to wake up from that nightmare I had about the 9th inning of Game 4.

by RhodeIslandRoxfan on Nov 2, 2009 2:54 PM MST up reply actions

Here's my explanation for Gaudin

The Yankees only need to win one more game. It does not matter which one they win as long as they win one. By pitching Burnett tonight you severely compromise your chances of winning game 6 if it goes that far. Petttite had a 104 pitch outing in game 3 in which he had to work quite a bit. Now you have to start him on short rest against Pedro on an extra day’s rest. Burnett’s ERA is much better at home so why wouldn’t you let him start there on an extra day’s rest after he was so good in game 2. Additionally you could mess up game 7 if it gets that far because now you can’t use Pettite in relief if Sabathia gets in trouble. (Remember he will be going on double short rest and he has not been unhittable against the Phils.)

I don’t think you improve you chances of winning tonight’s game by starting Burnett over Gaudin for three reasons. 1) Burnett is on the road where his ERA is ever a run higher this season. 2) He is on short rest 3) He is facing Cliff Lee and the Phils are going to win most games when he pitches anyway regardless of who is starting.

The way I see it is the Yankees have to win one game and they hurt their chances of doing that. (They are still huge but they hurt their chances a little) I think they helped their chances of winning game 5 a little, NOT A LOT. I think they totally screwed up game 6 and I think they hurt their chances of winning game 7 a little if it gets that far. I think the move overall is a net loss for the Yankees.

It probably won’t matter because the Yankees are in control of the series, but if the Phils come back Girardi needs to take a huge piece of the blame.

I'm still hoping to wake up from that nightmare I had about the 9th inning of Game 4.
